There's a big problem with the productivity industry. Too many systems are designed to make you look busy rather than actually get work done and aren't designed for the adhd brain. It's even worse for people with ADHD. These systems were designed for neurotypical brains. They simply don't work. Learn strategies designed for the adhd brain and learn how to motivate your interest-based mind, rather than simply "trying harder" at strategies not designed with you in mind.
    About:
In this video Nik goes over how to beat procrastination, executive paralysis, low motivation and focus, and what he learned after 26 years of having adhd. He hopes this video was able to boost your dopamine.
Disclaimer: All my content is based on my own experience and/or research/observations from licensed professionals. Just because you do these things, doesn’t necessarily mean you have ADHD. If you think you might have it, please look to get officially diagnosed by a professional.

I got my diagnos at 8 and i remember they put sensors on my head and i guess did some tests on how my brain acted. If your parents aren't qualified to diagnos you with adhd, their opinion is irrelevant. If you really want to convince them, sit them down and show them facts.

    ✨ Summary:
    - People with ADHD struggle with consistency in motivation rather than lacking motivation itself
    - Traditional productivity advice doesn't work well for ADHD brains which crave dopamine and novelty
    - Starting work first thing in the morning when dopamine levels are highest can help with focus
    - Breaking big tasks into just the first 3 steps and setting time-based rather than outcome goals makes starting easier
    - Building momentum by starting with easy tasks provides motivation to tackle harder ones
    - Tracking streaks and progress visually taps into the ADHD brain's love of games and challenges
    - Regularly introducing novelty through changes in environment, routine, or combining tasks boosts motivation
    - Finding ways to make tasks stimulating and challenging allows the ADHD brain to hyperfocus

This is a great strategy. Sometimes, I change up the environment by playing music, changing up the LED smart lightbulb or set the cleaning tasks for the morning, afternoon or AM/PM on the weekends. That way, it is less overwhelming by Sunday and Monday. Mon less things to do. I've noticed that preparing different colored teas or cold drinks will boost my dopamine in the morning. I'm always experimenting with teas, coffees, and mineral spring water. I can do lists as long as it remains visible, such as a magnetic writing board on the fridge and star magnets. Every time, my roommates or I accomplish a whole week of chores. A star goes next to the person's name. Then reset, and you get to challenge yourself and your roommates once again. WOW!!! You've just described my situation to a tee! 😱 I was 53 when I was diagnosed! I gradually watched my life go from somewhat orderly to chaotic! Really frustrating! It's different for women. My ADHD became heightened because of the hormone issues after the menopause which is what led to my diagnosis. My apartment is now ordered chaos as a result! I'm in the UK and the support we need just isn't there. Sometimes I get so angry because we're being made to feel as though it's our fault or that we don't matter because we have the disorder when we're in no way to blame! I managed to get a degree back in the early 90's before the menopause set in. But little did I know I would only have a few years before the craziness would return with a vengeance! 😭 These videos have been a breath of fresh air not to mention very enlightening!

One thing I that gives me a nice dopamine hit is before and afters. I take pictures if it is a visual difference, I make charts, to-do lists, and such, if it is a data difference. I do have to be careful with charts and to-do lists as these can cause me to hyper-focus on them and not get the actual thing done :S
I also had to change how I looked at success. I would idealize what the end product should look like and sometimes this alone would cripple me from starting - too difficult, too many steps. So now I just take success as making progress.
I also find that if I try to do something when I am not properly motivated it's kind of a waste of time and does not get done properly. If I wait until I have that motivation, it is soooo easy!

My brain looks for interest not importance. Nice - new interesting, challenging emergency.
    1. Start first thing in the morning. Only do things that increase dopamine in the morning. Cold shower, exercise, get some sun
Routines are difficult to maintain. Break your routines some days so you don't get bored.
    2. Break tasks into the first 3 steps. Commit to short spurts. Outcome based goals vs time based goals
    Do something. Not everything
    3. Build momentum. Start with the easiest thing first. Quick dopamine hit. Video games always start easy. Focus on easy tasks esp after a long break eg mornings or after long breaks
    5. Build streaks. A streak - number of days you do something. Eg Duolingo
ADHDers struggle with consistency not motivation
It's okay to have off days. Work at your own pace. Don't be too hard on yourself. compare yourself with you
    Don't complicate it.
    5. Regularly introduce novelty
Eg switch where you work, with whom or how or the time. Eg finish before x
Leverage competition. Alternate tasks combine tasks. Tweak environment

2nd viewing, taking notes, “rewinding” when I lost focus. The dopamine connection I’ve only learned about recently. It makes sense now why if I don’t get started in the morning with what I need to do, I don’t get started. I have noticed that when I just do a few steps of something, I do come back to it more easily instead of trying to get it all done at once. Also, setting a time deadline for something like taking the much-needed walk helps. I set a goal of 20 minutes but often stay out longer. I look forward to exploring this further. I’m tired of not getting sh*t done. Thank you.

I've found that a good first easy step to getting moving on my work is cleaning up my workspace. It also helps me with transitions. When my space is a wreck, I will subconsciously avoid my office just so I don't have to look at it. But if i trick myself into going into my office to neaten it up, maybe rearrange my artwork and pen cups, move my monitor, etc... It will give me a renewed desire to be in my office enjoying the neat space.
A good task to give myself when I've just finished something that fried my brain is to dump out a drawer on the floor, throw stuff out, wipe out the drawer, and put everything back more organized.
While I dont think this would work for everyone with ADHD because a lot of people with ADHD seem to thrive in chaos, I've learned that disorganization makes my ADHD worse, and the best way to get moving on projects is to keep them contained (sometimes literally in boxes) and organized so that i know i have everything i need at hand and i wont have to go searching all over the house for a pair of scissors.

I came across something similar by accident for housework... 10min kitchen clean, 10min bathrooms clean, 10min washing clothes/ fold clothes or ironing, 10 min dust/ vacuum house, 10 min mop etc... if you don't find the task in 10, you must move to the next task even if by that stage you want to keep on doing it, great dopamine hits and majority gets done in an hour. Before this system I used to spin my wheels and not do any of it.

I love the "do something" principle and think that was the unlock switch for me.
Ironically (maybe not?), I'm watching this video because I have massive projects looming over me with deadlines that make me want to spiral, run away in the forest and never come back, or go back to bed. Even after 6 espressos.
But even though I might not be able to write all 7000 words of an article (and write two additional articles, write 3 newsletters, and do 3 hours of SEO work) in one day, I can at least DO SOMETHING to move all these projects forward.
Perfectionism is definitely the thing holding me back (and also the sheer quantity of work to do).
I started with the simplest task (uploading a consultation on RUclips to give the replay to my client, which is how I found the video -- waiting for the replay to upload/render).
Also, as a feral Trekkie, I love that you included Sir Patrick Stewart! I have a "First Contact" film poster behind me and a Captain Picard action figure next to me on my desk.
Strangely, it helps thinking these are orders from my captain, and I can't let down Picard 🤣
This video is SO dense, and I'm excited to come back to watch it fully.
I'm curious because I'm addicted to working and winning, but my therapist told me this is categorically a bad thing because I'm using work and chasing productivity/wins to avoid other areas of my life. I'll sometimes forget to go outside or talk to another person for 3+ days because I'm so wrapped up with work because I feel the NEED to work to feel worthy of being alive.
Where's the healthy line between taking consistent action vs falling into extended hyperfocus sessions?

Fellow ADHD Haver here. This video bothered me since it's release and it took me a few days to put it into words, but I finally figured it out.
This video is trying to solve the wrong problem. People with ADHD will simply never have "God Mode Productivity". And that's the issue with this video. It's trying to fit the square peg into a round hole. The 'square peg' being people with ADHD(who will have varying degrees of productivity), and the 'round hole' being expectations of productivity. And I use this example for a reason. ADHD people are sick of trying to cut parts of themselves away to fit into the mold of something else. Especially because WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO. The world's expectations of productivity are for neurotypical people, not us. We will NEVER be that.
The true problem is getting neurotypical people to understand what daily life is like for ADHD people, and to re-work their expectations of it. Not make ADHD people live up to their standards. We have our own ADHD standards, and they have their own neurotypical standards. We need to reinforce and appreciate those differences.

    • @gregoryfriston7091
      @gregoryfriston7091 26 дней назад

Do it for you. Not for them. Be the best you can be. For you. Including, not losing the other good things about you for the sake of productivity. Use productivity to get done what matters for you. Use productivity to share the gifts you have, not to throttle them out of total existence. But, if working the system is what you have to do, then use this to help level out a bit the uneven playing field. Best wishes with all that you will do in many amazing ways throughout your ADHDer life.

    The best I've learned yet.
So very, very clear and realistic..!
I just learned about adult ADHD in my early 50's and that I had it.
This opened a floodgate of understanding..why I seemed to be so different from family and friends, and I was also impressed at how well I had learned to cope "dragging this difference around" and impressed with so many of my personally developed strategies to make significant progress in my life and my career.
Retirement close to 70, threw me into a weird confusing conundrum.
At the time, there was little "online" for clarity.
After a year, when I went to take stock..I was literally shocked at the myriad of projects started..and not a single one completed..even though I clearly had a ton of time!! Plus, I seemed to be behind..in so much that clearly needed to be done😮
I thought I had unexpectedly become lazy..I didn't even think about the ADHD aspect of things!
I then spent a whole year tracking my ups and downs trying to get an observational handle on my " stuck" or "resist" or "zoning out" or, or, or..
Seeing my patterns and seeing also the triggers..helped a whole bunch, but didn't actually resolve as much as I hoped..Setting my own deadlines..was a joke, I had more fun setting them, than meeting them..
Without work and family mandatory deadlines..Whoa!

All the things that he talked about I have personally experienced them and they indeed helped keep me consistent and focused but the problem is that I had no idea I was doing them and they were actual strategies, so I kept thinking it would just come back and go as it pleased. I even own a standing desk now and I have realized that changing from sitting to standing activates my brain and helps me re-focus on my current project. It's subtle things that help and you don't even realize it until someone experiences the same thing and says it out loud.
