I had both but sold the RE. At one time my garage housed GS 1200, ,KLR 650, RE and the XT and noticed that my everyday ride was the XT. Not planning any more cross country touring so I sold the large bikes. XT is a fun bike and perfect for rural Texas and Mexico.

Going to buy an XT. Love Royal Enfield but the pig like weight of the Himalayan turned me away. A well over 400 pound motorcycle is not an off road motorcycle and everyone would agree with that when you get in a jam on the side of a muddy forested hill and have to lift the bike around to get up and out.

My wife loves coming along, she says it's the most comfortable out of my 4 bikes. It has a tons of character, quite reliable, no complaints from me. Who cares about the compass! It's a novelty item. I watched a RAD a ton of times growing up. It's cool to know your brother was in that movie. I've been eyeing a Himalayan for a good few years. I'm probably going to bite the bullet and get one. I bought a z125 mini moto bike and a Honda Rebel 300 last year. I wish I would have just skipped the Rebel 300 and went straight to the Himalayan. I really like the Honda Trail 125, but good luck trying to find one to buy. As far as Yamahas, my first bike was a Yamaha Enduro 125 two cycle. I really miss those types of bikes and wish they would make a come back. A Yamaha TW200 would be a cool bike too, but touring on these bikes kind of sucks because they lack the higher upper end of power for comfortable highway cruising. If I got the Himalayan I plan on taking all the secondary highways with no traffic and lower speeds. I have two aunts and uncles that moved to Silver City NM a few years ago. It looks like a place I could have a ton of fun doing some off roading.

My fist one was xt250, few months later I added cb500x, then a year later added Super Tenere, then Kymco Spade 150 (which I sold) and added RE Classic 350 which is shit but cool looking bike. XT is perfect learner and trash bike that is indestructable but, it is not as practical and utilitarian like 500x which I think may be most versatile and useful bike of all (I tried over 60). It is tough call to choose only one. It depends on age of rider, financial situation, geography and kind of riding that one do. If I go by mileage, 500x has most 15k followed by year newer Super Tenere with 14k (long rides catching up quickly) while XT sits at around 5.5k. There is something very peactical about Classic for quick runs but, RE is shit. Put 1000 miles on it in a year, using it mostly as a toy.

@@findingneutral Let me just illustrate with one example. I put my 500x on hitch carrier of Silverado 1500 and hauled it from Texas to California where I used it for two weeks. Then on hitch carrier again to Oregon and rode again for two weeks. Then, left wife and kids with in laws for another two weeks while I rode it back to Texas. 2100+ miles in seven days. I can't think of any other bike that I would be comfortable or able to do such trip. They are either too heavy, too underpowered, tubed tires, not comfortable or not able to haul luggage.

I was amazed at how good the fit and finish was on my RE for the price and no problems with anything so far. And the Italian motorcycles were the worst. They cost the most but build the worst. I choose the XT250 for two reasions. One much better off road, So much more dependible, And Three still made in Japan, Quality machine. Himalayan suffer production issues. The quality of parts was not up to the mark and in 2017 some users filed lawsuits to either demand compensation or return the bike for refund. You can not expect quality from a country that still does not know what a work bench is. Made in India, ya that speeks volumes.
