I've just bought this laptop encouraged by your review and added a RAM stick, it's great bang for buck! It's true the trackpad is lacking, but i do prefer to use a small wireless mouse anyways!

I bought few months ago a different HP model with 5500U ( HP 15s-eq2008 ) but the situation was the same - a single 8GB stick and a free slot. I added another one and the performance now is much much better.
I bought a similarly spec'ed Asus Vivobook you reviewed a few years ago. I did get the Realtek adapter in it to work on Linux but updates or different distros would break it and I'd have to start all over. Last year I picked up an Intel card on Amazon for $17. Problem solved! So maybe order that 8gb of ram and throw in a BT/WiFi card in your cart as well if you want to run Linux.
At least its has 2 RAM slots. Many laptops have partial or fully baked in RAM. This HP can take 32GB easily, the soldered down one with one free slot don't get this much RAM. Still not a fan of most of the ports being on the right hand side of the machine like most HP laptops are, so I went Lenovo this time around.
@Clarissa 1986 why isn't the ram built in such a way so that only having one slot still acts as dual channel? I don't see any reason why they couldn't redesign the slots to do that.

I just tested Spiderman Remastered runs flawlessly, and looks great even on low settings. My specs, 16GB 3200mhz ram, 1TB nvme Evo 980 plus, Dell laptop.

I got the 14s-fq1000na recently and it had some sort of static crackling coming from the back of the laptop. It's not the fan but it doesn't sound like coil whine or anything either. I'm in the process of trying to exchange it for another one and hopefully it doesn't do it. I haven't seen any other complaints about this on any of the 14s laptops, so hopefully I just got unlucky and got a slightly defective one and the one that replaces it doesn't have any issues. For the less than 24 hours total I've used it for it seems to be very good
I have the ASUS VIVO 5500U laptop with this chip and 3200Mhz 16 gigs to and I love the thing.. It is amazing how far we have come on the thin and light laptops. I did notice that even with power off battery maxed out, there was still a huge difference in performance when plugged in, it almost doubled when plugged in. So I don't know what up with that, But gaming is way better plugged in No matter what I do to the windows power settings and Or AMD settings..
A 2x4 config certainly would have been better for 8GB, but an argument could be made that the upgradability of 1x8 is reasonable. I've got 2x16 on the way to max out its RAM capacity, and a new NVMe SSD on the way. It's not high end at all, but if you just need a backup system or an occasional away from home, you can't argue too much with the price.
Once I tried to add a stick of ram to a laptop getting lost into a compatibility jungle Is nowadays somekind different ? Changing both the stick could help?

Someone on Amazon wrote a confusing review. It was said that the system wouldn't proceed with 32GB of Ram even though the 5500U is more than capable of taking it, then in the next sentence that person said "So I'll have to stick with 32GB of Ram". I am pretty sure the second sentence was a typo and it can only handle 16GB. As many people are saying though 16GB should be plenty. I don't see any games requiring more than 8GB of Ram none-the-less 12GB of ram in the near future.
Unfortunately, Task Manager with laptops is inaccurate. Task manager will frequently display "1 of 2 slots" occupied. So one might think they have an extra dimm slot for ram. However when you open the laptop up you'll find that there is only 1 slot of ram or that the ram is soldered.
@@bland9876 I'll give an example, so that it makes more sense. There are currently 3 laptops being repaired at my office. One laptop is a thin and light notebook all the ram is soldered. The 2nd laptop is a gaming laptop with 2 sodimm slots, only one is occupied. The third is a regular size laptop, with only 1 sodimm slot which is occupied. All three laptops say "1 of 2 slots" occupied in task manager. It's only accurate with the gaming laptop, 1 out 3 laptops. All 3 have the latest Windows 10 (21h1) at the time of writing this. I think you feel that I'm attacking you, or you think I'm trying to make you look dumb. That is not my intention at all. I commented because I don't want people checking task manager and thinking they have an extra sodimm slot and then they go out and buy ram and then open up their laptop and realize they don't have an extra sodimm slot. The most accurate way is open the laptop or look at a dismantling RUclips video of the exact same laptop model. I'm trying to save people time and a headache.

I have this laptop. I think if you are new to computers you could see tutorials of how to install ram on laptop on RUclips(If you think you can't open the bottom of the laptop go to a laptop repair shop if possible, you might end up breaking the laptop if you aren't careful!!Remember ram location is different in each laptop unless they are same model/series). Also this laptop supports 3200 hz ram (2 ram sticks are supported,1 stick is already inside the laptop when you buy it) ,if you are planning on buying ram stick you should search for "laptop ddr4 ram 3200hz", I am personally using the Samsung brand ram but Crucial ram is also great. However if you find 3200 hz ddr4 to be expensive,slightly lower than 3200 hz will also work fine!

@@chandrait2004 I've managed to minimize the heating by disabling turbo boost and changed the minimum process state to 5% while charging (it had 80% if I remember correctly).
@@PoloSV some of these cheap laptops usually run hot when charging if you aren't gaming or stuff like that switch to power saving mode it reduced the heating for me by alot

I had the exact same HP 14 laptop, it had power button issue, won't turn on without a charger. Replaced and took Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 with same CPU

disable turbo boost and reduce min cpu load to 5% so it can underclock
I wonder if you’d see even more improvement with 32 GB of RAM. On some laptops, that will allow you to set aside 4 GB for the graphics.
iGPU can take more than 2GB if needed (at least when you have more than 8GB of RAM).
With 2 8gb sticks you are more than good

According to what I've read, this one should support 32GB ram. How much that will improve things over 16 depends on what you're doing.
