The best part of this video is the genuine misunderstanding the director has. In an interview, the band has stated the song is actually about dog training. When you read the lyrics, you see they’re right. It’s not the band who doesn’t understand the video, it the director who doesn’t understand the song...hence the perplexed band. The entire song is a pun
Never have I considered "Spinal Tap" a parody. They're the real thing, as real as rock'n'roll can be. Everyone interested in 20th century culture should watch this film. They might not understand it, but they'll sure get the sense of it!

That video got a lot of airplay on MTV back in the late ‘80s. I wonder if MTV failed to get that it was a parody? It looked like your typical sex driven hard rock videos. But the lyrics were clearly about a school for dogs! Heavy Metal has never been so hilarious!

Mark Knopfler on 'Tap. ''The first time I ever heard Spinal Tap, I can remember being being so affected by what I was hearing that I had to take the record, and throw it out the window.''
Fun fact: When the Spinal Tap movie first came out, people initially thought that ST was a real band. Rob, Michael, Harry and Chris sure did makes a great movie don't they?
Whenever I heard people talking about Spinal Tap online I thought it was a real thing. Even when I found out about the movie and watched the Marshall Stack Guitar clip. It was like the world fell apartwhen I found out that they were a parody
Apparently, the Gallagher brothers (Oasis), did actually believe they were a "real band". It seems they went to a ST gig, where the Folksmen (themselves as a folk trio, watch "A mighty wind"). They were all confused and did not understand that it was all a parody... It says a lot about Oasis....😊
I played guitar in a bar cover band and we played this once as a joke. After our first set, the manager came over and said, "Don't play that bitch song here ever again." :)
to me that is one of the funniest things about Spinal Tap they actually are a good rock band musically it is just that their lyrics are so silly and they are ridiculous characters. I find that way funnier than a crap band because if they also had bad music it would be too much like a hat on a hat, but their good music kind of acts like the straight man in a comedy duo which their silly lyrics and jokes can work against.

Nigel's Marshall stack design guitar is so ridiculous. I've seen the original movie many times and I've seen various concert performances and videos, but I've never seen that guitar. It's hilarious. They are so good at capturing the 70s and early 80s Rock and Roll excess. It's hard to believe that some Rock stars didn't think Spinal Tap was funny. I guess the truth hurts sometimes.
I thought it would kill off the heavy metal bands but they kept on being unintentionally ridiculous. Then grunge came along in the 90s and that was the end.
People didn't know that they weren't a real band. I didn't see the movie when it was released because they advertised it seriously as a tour movie for a band nobody had heard of.
@SidneyBroadshead SOME people thought it was a real band. Many of us self-proclaimed, movie, TV, documentary, and comedy buffs recognized very quickly what they were doing with Spinal Tap and how brilliant it was.
The part where they burst through and have no idea why there's a choir with a crucifix silhouette in the background there. That gag's the best. Always kills me! Same with the end where they're in tears but still need it to be explained.
We did this video back in 1992 not 1982 as it says on the copyright.. Mark Rezyka and his newly formed US 95 Production company Directed this he appears as the Director at the beginning and end of the video.. this was a lot of fun to make and it is still awesome!! Spinal Tap are 80s. In their fictional history they were around in the 60s and 70s but their style was different and the name was different. In the film and in the music videos they're about as 80s as you can get.
The Stones weren't defined by the 80s, but Spinal Tap were, because that was when they were conceived as a fictional band, and it was clearly the 80s visual and musical style of rock that they were parodying.
Just saw This is Spinal tap in a train with my best girl friend (my only one, in fact). She had not heard of the movie before. We laughed so hard a few people got a little annoyed. And I almost lost my lungs. Such a great movie to watch with a "newcomer"!
My recollection is that MTV threw a fit and blurred out the women's asses because they couldn't handle the parody. Every metal video was wall-to-wall T&A back then.

But go back a little further, first time seeing Spinal Tap: OMG, that's Lenny, of Lenny and Squiggy, from Laverne and Shirley! (They also performed songs on that as Lenny and the Squigtones.)
I remember the 3 members of Spinal Tap being interviewed when this song came out and being asked if this song was sexist and offensive. They replied: It's just a song about training dogs.
Profoundly moving! Movingly profound. Once again the lads capture the very essence of what '70's and '80's "Hair bands" were all about, and take it a notch higher!
This is not about 80s 'Hair Bands' which's a silly umbrella term for 80s Hard Rock bands. This is a parody of a British Heavy Rock band that started in 1964 and changed its sound over the years. Have you watched the movie?
@@LuchaLibertaria - Oh, yes, numerous times! I love it. The lads in Spinal Tap are heroes of mine, but above all Nigel! Yes, I know it's a parody. And a great one. Many people do use that silly term "Hair Bands" to describe long-haired hard rock bands...and that's why I used it. Because it's funny, that's why.
