Watch The ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Cast’s Extended Interview With Harry Smith | TODAY
as an english person, I don't think these guys get anywhere near enough credit for just how perfect their english accents are in the film
It's easy not to notice because the whole film is so great. I'm used to all american actors doing bad english accents, and there's are just perfect
I always wondered about that! Thanks for sharing that tidbit of info! 🤩
True. usually American's are dreadful at accents. They let it slip every now and again by saying things like "Erbal" instead of "Herbal" tea and a few other small americanisms but for the most part they are really making a great fist of it.
I'm a Brit and I genuinely thought they were English when I first saw the movie. I was taken aback when I discovered they were American a few years later. The accents are so authentic and they don't go for the predictably cheesy 'posh' sounding English accent, but more of a working class London area accent.
Despite being born and raised in New York, Christopher Guest, aka Nigel Tufnel, had a British father, and is a US/UK dual citizen and hereditary peer, the 5th Baron Haden-Guest.
@@gotham61 talk about paying too much tax...I say pick a country and be done with it.
The DVD has them commenting on the movie in character. It's basically a whole other movie and just as hilarious!
"Oh, poor viv..."
Brother Bear has a similar commentary. It's Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas in their moose characters.
I’m proud of Chuck for recovering and able to be out around all those electronics
turns out he was in a band before becoming a lawyer, what a sick joke!
We'll see how recovering is working when they turn it up to 11... he might relapse
You have the tenses reversed.
His performance was fastidiously superb! What an amazing actor.
I dont get it
I have used the "have to go down to the lobby and wait for the limo" line numerous times in my life, and it always kills. Its so adaptable to any situation.
"the act before us was terrible..they were still booing him when we were on..."..that line tickled me...great movie.. :)
Great line, lol
Duke Fame, such a wanker.
One of my favourite lines.
we had to apologize with our set..
I really like this one too. Think it gets easily missed.
I've been a musician all my adult life. When I saw this film I almost died laughing. I actually had to fight for breath. It is one of the funniest things I've ever seen....and it is a continuous comedy assault. There isn't one dead second. Pure genius!
Same same. My muso friends and I went to watch the movie and one of them (the asthmatic) fell out of his cinema seat while gasping for breath because we couldn't stop laughing. We thought we were going to lose him but we couldn't help because we were laughing so hard. It hit the mark for every muso I've ever known. BTW: my mate survived.
@@chukrock - Oh man! And what just caps the whole thing is Rob Reiner's character taking this whole thing so seriously. He's got that super sincere face going the whole time these idiots are doing their thing. I almost died everytime the camera would pan to Rob and that face nodding appreciation for the "great art" he was experiencing! It captures the self indulgence of that era and genre perfectly. My first attempt at starting a band out of high school had a couple of Nigels in it....complete with spandex and make-up.......even though we were practicing in an old barn with a dirt floor! Hilarious!
@@chukrock I laughed the same way During Some Kind of Monster. I don't think Metallica knew it was about them...
Same here. One band I was in, we played this dive bar in Detroit in the 80s and the back edge of the stage was unstable.
At one point, I hear the drums go bonkers off time and turn and look to see our drummer fall backwards and both his feet go up.
His drum stool had fallen off the edge while he was playing. He quickly jumped up and tried to keep playing while someone retrieved his seat.
It was hilarious and embarrassing simultaneously. It was a true Spinal Tap moment in real life. I swear I am not making this up.
Unfortunately, that drummer whom was a good friend of mine, passed away last October. I will always remember.
i dont believe you
Every one of them is American and every one of them did a flawless English accent in the film. I say that as a Brit as well.
C. Guest's pa was a member of the House of Lords!
Syklone I thought Guest was a Brit.
Christopher Guest's accent slipped once in the 'no bones' scene. He pronounced 'tuna' in an American accent ... 'toona' instead of 'choona'. You're right, though - for years I thought they were all British!
Also once said “sem-i” instead of “sem-ee”.
But, very very good, very convincing overall.
Syklone His dad was British and his mom was American. He has dual citizenship and has a title which I can’t remember at the moment. That whole “peerage” thing confounds me. He can’t serve in the House of Lords or whatever it is cause they changed the rules. Dual citizenship need not apply anymore. Another example of The Man tryin’ to keep a brother down. 🇬🇧
"This one goes to 11" has to be the biggest cultural legacy of this monumental film. Hands down
Maybe, D Minor being the saddest key, I have seen experts quote that!
All classics! I will have to watch the film again this weekend, it's been a while. Glad I stumbled upon this interview, gawd bless YooToob, and Spinal Tap.
But did you see Titanic?
But, why not just make 10 louder?
And "None more black"
"I'm just as God made me, sir." Is one of my favorite lines (one of so many) in this amazing mockumentary!
My golf buddy and I say this CONSTANTLY. Such a small moment in a film filled with big, funny, memorable, quotable moments!!
Mr. Bentley from The Jeffersons.
Back in the day I was a sales rep for the record label the put out the soundtrack. We were constantly getting stores wanting to order Spinal Tap's fake back catalogue that was listed on the album cover.
That’s priceless
Would Have loved a copy of Shark (Sh*t) Sandwich!
When I was a kid I thought the albums were real :(
That's brilliant. Like someone should have bought Jenny's phone #
Intravenous De Milo
The best thing is, these guys were extraordinary musicians, besides being so, so hilarious. Thank you, Spinal Tap. Your work continues to cheer me, RIP for the drummers.
Well ... they were good musicians. Very good. But no one will mistake Christopher Guest for Jimmy Page.
@@daveinindy I completely agree. Page is my favorite too!
Extraordinary ?
Anyways - This Film, is a Favorite of Rock Musicians & in the 90s & 2000 - could be found on most Tour Busses !!
I disagree, the best thing is seeing Harry Shearer slowly physically morphing into Montgomery Burns.
Uh...I wouldn't say extraordinary. Competent, yes.
The most amazing thing with all the rapid fire banter going on between them is that they never step on each other...pure chemistry!
That’s a very, very difficult line to walk, and these guys (and interviewer Harry) do it well. I judge podcast hosts and guests by the extent to which they talk or laugh over each other, and it sounds so amateurish.
Chris Guest is a genius for recognising the significance of Titanic being totally improvised. He had no idea the ship would go down.
I'm embarrassed to admit I was one exec who said "no" to *both* This Is Spinal Tap *and* Titanic. I felt the latter was far too long and thought audiences would be more likely to come see it if it was cut down to just the first three letters...
I thought Titanic 2 was far more edgier, but that's just me.
The Stonehenge scene and the argument after was one of the funniest scenes ever
My favorite moment in this movie was the scene at the piano where Christopher is talking about being influenced by Mozart and Bach, and he's playing this gorgeous original piece in D minor. And after all of this heartfelt sentimentality and striving towards intellectualism, he's asked what this piece he's playing is called. "Oh this? This piece is called 'Lick My Love Pump."
My fav scene too! 😂😂😂
Its hard to pick a fav but one of mine is when Bruno Kirby is driving the band in the limo talking about Frank Sinatra's book and they put the divider window up. It killed me.
One of my all time favorites lines is when they're discussing the death of one of their drummers and I believe Nigel says something to the effect of Scotland Yard said it was better left unsolved.
That's one of the best lines ever. I laughed so hard the first time I heard that.
HAHHAHA its su much better than dust for vomit. the unsolved line is probably the funniest line of script of the 80s
I liked the part where he said the problem was the stone henge was in danger of being smashed by a dwarf
@@LARRYCAL mine was the pod scene 😂
"He choked on vomit. It was someone else's vomit."
I saw the Spinal Tap movie with my bandmates when it came out in 1984. We were all laughing hysterically except for our singer, who just looked confused throughout the whole film.
Interestingly, our singer was only one of us who became successful in the music business.
Anybody who doesn’t like it or get it is no friend of mine. I’m a musician too, we’d drop anyone who didn’t dig it.
I saw this in LA in a theater when it came out, with my drummer, and we were cracking up throughout the entire movie and we were the only two people in the theater who seemed to get it.
HiLARious movie!
Again, this is Titanic we're talking about?
"Why would you make a movie about a band nobody's heard of?"
That gave me the biggest laugh!
One of my all time favorites. I love that they played together for real. They toured in character and their folk group opened for spinal tap. Genuinely real music and great performers that always bring the funny.
“You can’t dust for vomit” is the single best line in movie history!
I always liked "none, none more black".
Followed closely by,
"He died in a bizarre gardening accident."
"They decided that the case was 'best left unsolved.'"
This one's called "lick my love pump".
I always loved "dozens of people spontaneously combust each year, its just not widely reported"
ruclips.net/video/TW6W9iOjTKM/видео.html
If Kiss can be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so should Spinal Tap.
especially since these guys are better musicians and have better songs!!! Plus: Stonehenge!
Absofukinglutely!!!!!!!!!
🎯
Man, I wish this interview was 2hrs long. Those guys have such incredible chemistry.
And Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest......lightning in a bottle with 2 legendary films. Both Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride are desert island films for me.
It's interesting to note how strong the chemistry was on The Princess Bride too......chemistry in art is key.
and physics too
Such a treat to see these guys together again.
Marshall actually put out a range of amps that went to 11 due to Spinal Tap!
they never separated.
they've been friends since tap take a look at the great movies waiting for guffman Best in show A mighty wind that's all the tap guys the brainchild of Christopher guest.
"...southeast end of the east end." I could watch these guys for hours...
Blues-Jazz festival... er... Jazz-Blues festival... on the Isle of Lucy
That line was golden.
My older brother showed me this when I joined my first band. I thought it was about the pitfalls of being in a band. Later, we did half of that stuff in the movie. Priceless. Timeless
So, you danced around an 8 inch Stonehenge?
Finding this film, and these guys' unbelievable chemistry and sense of humour, changes your life.
Four comedically brilliant men. The movie hasn't lost anything in nearly forty years. That's exceedingly rare.
The actors also haven’t lost anything. These guys still have a razor wit and play off each other so well.
I attended a Q&A with Harry Shearer in Melbourne (AUS) approx 20 yrs while he was on a comedy tour and 3 audience members were randomly picked to ask him a question and I was selected. I asked him ‘so what makes YOU laugh?’ And he said: that’s a great question. Made my day.
did he answer the question?
@@thewkovacs316 That was the answer.
What these gentlemen did was pure magic...the chemistry, wit, genius, creativity, spontaneity, even musicianship is undeniable. This classic film still brings so much laughter to us. Thank you Spinal Tap & RIP to all of your drummers! 🙏
These guys have such amazing chemistry together even when they are just having an interview, no wonder they were able to make such a funny movie bouncing off each other like that
So many people here in the UK say that's their all time favourite film, yes the jokes on us but the characters cannot be argued, these gentlemen absolutely nailed it.
Watching this interview I see that Christopher Guest is just the master of the rolling joke, I fell apart at "nobody expected that ship to go down"
Thanks guys 👍
But it’s true that no one thought it was possible for her to go down like that. What were the odds of that tragic event with a massive new ship?
The joke is on you?
I disagree. Quite the opposite, as Elizabeth says to Darcy.
_This is Spinal Tap_ is one of my favorite movies. The chemistry, the setting and the plot just meshed in a rare way. The first Ghostbusters is another one of those rare comedic gems.
"It's a Lego lawsuit where they have to build a courthouse." Harry is so quick and hilarious.
One of the funniest movie ever made.
I would go as far as the funniest. Nothing has ever made me laugh out loud like ST
uneedtherapy42
Pop, Look and Listen, baby!
Especially to those people that ever played in a band.
I really was. Let us not forget though a spoof documentary was made and released 6 months before Tap came out called 'Bad News' about a UK metal band. If you haven't seen it please do. Search for 'Bad news comic strip'. It is equally hilarious.
@@CelticSaint Also, The Rutles came out several years earlier. That, is the true original.
These four together still can play off each other so hilariously well.
St. Hubbins, the patron saint of quality footwear.
And one wanted to start a haberdashery.
He sure does look like this guy from Better Call Saul (lol).
@Bob Smith He's not Saul.
There's a technique in improvisation called, "Yes, and..." or Agree and Add. When your partner throws a suggestion at you, you agree with it and add a funny addition to it. It's a bedrock principle of improvisational humor. Believe me when I say, these men do it better than anyone!
Sometimes they even do it the other way round and dispute or contradict what the others saying, and that's really skilled because if you do it the wrong way it can derail the whole flow of a bit, not to mention annoying the others...so it's also a mark of their trust in each other
Spinal Tap is THE musicians movie..... There isn't a musician alive that's spent any time touring that hasn't lived almost every scene of that movie. THAT is why it's so loved among musicians, and has become the cult classic that it is.
I consider it equal with Bad News Tour.
@@skipintroux4444 I consider Still Crazy the best of all :-)
And its even more than that so not musicians loves it too
It makes me sad to see these guys getting a little long in the tooth, but they’re all immortal thanks to This Is Spinal Tap, an evergreen work of pure genius if ever there was one! Rob Reiner is one of the coolest people currently inhabiting the world. Long may he and his crazy cohorts prosper!
I think this interview would have been better in Dobly...
Nah, Dublin or Dolby.
I think it would be better at 11
Dubly, not dobly.
In the movie she says “dobly” because the real word is Dolby with an ‘o’ not a ‘u’. But then Nigel says it more like “dubly” when he makes the joke. Does that clear it up for everybody lol
axeman14>> No, she clearly says "dubly," not "dobly." Then Nigel says, "what, Dublin?" Of course meaning the city in Ireland. See for yourself:
ruclips.net/video/7sz5OrACPn8/видео.html
Does that clear it up for you?
"He choked on someone else´s vomit." BRILLIANT.
The concept is so great too: Take a bunch of people who are great at improvisation and have them create an actual history for their character, learn it extremely well and then improvise around them with that knowledge being used as their memory. Brilliant! They kept from laughing so well (kudos to them for that), but I can only imagine how many takes were ruined that we'll probably never see.
These guys are pure genius ... They are even hilarious out of character ... So much talent!
When they try to harmonize over Elvis's grave with one of Elvis's own songs is pure gold.
Christopher Guest has the driest sense of humor when he’s not in character
Like he's angry at everyone... til he lathers up
It's the British in him.
He always seems like he hates doing interviews, and hates discussing things he's done in the past...
He's brilliant
He's freaking amazing.
Regarding the new album cover for "Smell The Glove" : "The question is how much blacker could it be? The answer is none. None more black."
My favourite line!
Which in turn spawned Metallicas Black Album, and the metal band None More Black
Smalls: You can see... both sides 😳
You should see what the band wanted the album to look like... It wasn't always a glove.
None more black 🤣 love it
Everyone is laughing but Guest. He really holds true to his form. "It's not who I am, it's what I do."
bit of a stuffed shirt here. he must of thought he was sitting in the house of lords rather than at an interview about an inane movie. lighten up, chris.
I got his autograph during A Mighty Wind. Yes, he is that dry.
Guest has enough talent that I’m happy to tolerate “dry”.
@@ultrakool It’s called being “dry”
@@ultrakool He's hilarious, spending half the time pretending he's more interested in critiquing Titanic!
The chemistry between these guys is amazing and a testament to why this movie works.
Not in the movie, but one of the greatest things ever written was in a mock review: "Spinal Tap fills a much-needed void in the spectrum of rock and roll."
Yes
"Have a good time...all the time. That's my philosophy, Marty." (Viv Savage)
My favourite line in the film - and let's face it, just about every line of the film is quotable!
I saw these guys play live at the Seattle coliseum (early 80's). Just for fun we chased their limo to seatac airport. Met them all..nice guys..and then Jamie Lee Curtis stepped out and handed me a beer! Fun night!
@Time Traveller gee..I didn't have my disposable 1980's camera on me..but it happened. Unforgettable.
@Time Traveller believe me..if I had pics I would gladly post them...I WISH I'd had a camera!!! Oooof.
@Time Traveller I didn't say there weren't cameras..or whatever...I'm just saying I didn't happen to have one. It was a fun little time I thought I would I post it. Done stamp.
Jamie Lee stepping out and handing me a beer is my new dream. And she'd do it looking like she did in that scene in Trading Places where she explains to Aykroyd what isn't free in her apartment. Any dude with a VCR and a pause button in the 80's knows what I'm talking about.
@Time Traveller - Jamie Lee Curtis is Christopher Guest's wife, so it makes sense that she'd have been in the limo with them.
‘Lick my Love pump’ is the saddest tune ever written in the key of Dm.
Little known triva.... influenced by Mozart and Bach. Sort of in between those, its like a Mach piece really.
@@densealloy Even more little known(? lol) is that "Licke my love pump" is part of a song trilogy...
I've seen ST at least 20 times, and almost every time I see some little nuance or piece of business I'd missed. One of the 20 funniest films ever made. Thanks, guys!
I’d say 5. There are not 19 films funnier than this 🤣
For me it ties with the first Blues' Brothers movie, I challenge anyone to name a funnier rewatchable film,in any genre
This and Curb are all I need to make me laugh
Director Marty DiBergi's name is made up of other directors' names:
Martin Scorsese, Brian DePalma, Steven Spielberg and Federico Fellini.

There's a music store in Stockholm that's named "These Go To 11". :)
Christopher Guest looks like an absolute treat to be around.
Big bottom big bottom.
Talk about bum cakes

The fact that they were all playing bass killed me. One of the top 40 songs on the album, for sure.

Christopher Guest, as happy and cooperative as ever.
Yeah haha what’s his deal?
He says that “comedy is his job” so he doesn’t like to be funny in his off-time.
@@blakethomas5637 that's quite funny
Jack Reilly he’s just droll, no deal. He just doesn’t like being “on” all the time. He comes from good aristocratic British stock and they view showbiz and acting as merely a paycheck, a job; not a lifestyle, as in the USA. American celebrities always need to be performing and “on” even when they’re not. He’s keeping it real he does not want to be performing when he’s not on the clock.
He strikes me as being a couple of steps ahead of whoever is interviewing him and he hasn't patience for those that can't keep up. If they keep up, he keeps feeding it, almost always to something hilarious, if they don't keep up he just lets it go by.
Their concert film Spinal Tap Live At Royal Albert Hall is awesome.
It show how well these guys can actually play their instruments.
They need to be inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
I got to see Spinal Tap in Wisconsin, they are excellent musicians. The best prop was the oversized Stonehenge that got stuck in the rafters. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.
I saw them in DC. When they played Stonehenge, somebody bought a FedEx envelope on stage and when they opened it there was a hand sized Stonehenge in it. Great show.
Saw them in Orlando in the early 90s. Third row. It was a blast!!!
Why didn’t this go on for longer, I can watch these for hours, they have great chemistry and respect for each other. A fantastic film that creases me up every time I watch it.
Dang, Rob Reiner looks fantastic. All these guys are legends.
I love how the band can turn on American accents and are able to pose as actors for this interview.
Pure Genius
One of the most ingenious comedies of all time! Between this, "Waiting for Guffman", "Best in SHow", "A Mighty Wind", all of them are true comedy:-).
it's just cool that all the Tap band sans drummer have been friends for so long that they form like a Monty Python comedy troop and gave us all those great movies.
❤❤❤❤❤
One of my favorite jokes, is getting lost backstage, because it has happened to me.
Happened to me and a friend taking the F train to Far Rockaway. We got directions from a black MTA worker on changing trains, got on another one, and got off to meet the same guy!
These guys bring back so many good memories. I was lucky enough to catch their tour back in the day. At the show you were given ear plugs advertising as "the world's loudest band. I still have them. Loved their time on SNL as well.
How could I leave this - behind! I actually saw them in concert in Jacksonville, FL! They were amazing live!!
They're British accents are amazing, absolutely flawless and I also say that as a Brit too
For the few of you among the commenters here who haven't seen them, you need to check out Chris Guest's films (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, Mighty Wind, etc). Michael and Harry in most if not all of them, along with Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, John Michhel Higgins, Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Lynch, etc. Some of the greatest comedies ever made.
The years of comedy these men produced on this premise truly was.. One Louder! Thank you for coming together.
This Is Spinal Tap IS my favorite comedy. I’m a musician, and I can’t tell you how many times “This one goes to 11” has been quoted in rehearsals and gigs.
The Stonehenge miniature props, funniest thing ever! XD
Can be compared with Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath - who in ‘83 used Stonehenge as a stagesetting - who ordered it in real size which made it impossible to use in most music theatres due to size.
It was used in a few open air shows but otherwise it was stored in a truck during the “Born Again” tour.

Just watched it recently and noticed product placement: in one scene Nigel is wearing a Norman’s Rare Guitars t-shirt, and then in the credits we learn that Nigel’s guitar collection was “courtesy of Norman’s Rare Guitars.”
I remember EVH saying everyone he watched it with was howling and he was getting bummed because it was SO spot on to his life.
Iron maiden are spinal tap.
As a mockimentary, Spinal Tap is unsurpassed. Brilliant, hysterical, witty, spot on. So many moments, situations, and dialogue that could never have 22:42 been scripted with the perfection of their impromptu performance.
As a teenager, I saw Spinal Tap on The "TV Show." My best friend's dad was hip and turned us on to things like that and we LOVED the Spinal Tap Rock and Roll Nightmare bit. I was 17 when the Spinal Tap movie came out and sat behind Cher (somehow) at one of the first (premiere?) showings in L.A.
This is just hands down one of my favorite movies of all time and was one of the best ideas that came to fruition
I swear I won't bring this up again...
Christopher guest is some kind of genius.
As a muso in my late 60's I have so many Spinal Tap moments. My best one was arriving with a band (the obligatory Ford Transit ) at a venue in Harrogate, Yorkshire. I was struggling with a 4 X 12 Marshall speaker cab, and just as I was about to lift it up some stairs in to the venue, one of the clubs officials came over to me very seriously, saw the speaker cab and told us very categorically: "Before you start, can you turn it down.......!!"
Something I wish they had touched on is the DVD commentary for the film. It's so good. Very much like having a sequel within the original film 👌
Office Space and Spinal Tap are my two funniest movies ever made. They get funnier each time you watch them
"Scotland Yard was like, best leave it, you know, UNSOLVED."
Normally they would want to know, but that gardening accident was unusual. Even the family didn't want it solved.
Fun Fact: The BBC iPlayer volume control goes up to 11 purely as a homage to Spinal Tap!
Ha, that is interesting.
In a movie full of so many great scenes, the fact that I forgot “Puppet Show Today, Also Spinal Tap” is a travesty. That one shot made the whole movie make sense to me in such a subtle way. Genius.
They had a big dressing room tho
Agreed, my favorite shot in the movie.
I once caused a client to do an honest-to-god spit-take at an after-work party. He had brought with him and was waving around in disbelief a Kinkos-copied flyer for a bar in our little town announcing an upcoming appearance by Status Quo ("Pictures of Matchstick Men"). I asked if they were opening for Puppet Show. (Nobody else got it.)
For me it was the sketches and Nigel's deadpan face "is this some kind of a joke" 😅😅😅😅😅
I was so fortunate to be able to see them live in concert! They were fantastic!
I don't think Nigel crack a smile or laughed during that whole interview and I love it! It's a crime that they apparently weren't compensated fairly for this amazing film.
Christopher Guest making fun of those hands at 16:30 just killed me, hahaha
Just finished spinning "Intravenus de Milo" on my turntable and saw this pop up on the RUclips. What a weird coincidence.

Dude! I was listening to Shark Sandwich when this popped up!
I remember renting Spinal Tap on VHS… my sister kept saying “I thought this was a comedy… this is a documentary about some band…” and I kept pointing out that St. Hubbins was Lenny from Laverne and Shirley..!
Their first drummer Stumpy Pepys (Ed Begley Jr.) died in a bizarre gardening accident😃 Boston isn't a college town🤣

Blue Oyster Cult has an umlaut over the O in Oyster for no apparent reason, but putting it over the N in Spinal was genius.
Also Motley Crue
Motley Crue used the umlaut also making more of a mock rock band than Spinal Tap.
Motörhead did it cos they thought it looked mean, which it does.
When I finally decide on a band name I'm going to put an umlaut over every. single. letter.

I actually had my own "Spinal Tap moment": I was in Buffalo, NY for a wedding and was staying in the same hotel as Def Leppard. The person whose wedding I was attending had rented a limousine for his out-of-town guests. We were going to the mall to get wedding gifts and we all collected at the limo (noticing these rather rock 'n roll guys with English accents hanging about the lobby). There was a funny brief moment where we had the sublime pleasure of rousting the Def Leppard guys out of "our" limo. Priceless!
I hope one of you said: I would like to talk but I have to go to the lobby and wait for the limo. 😁
