      I seen one that had a hitch on top of the bug that had an attachment point toward the front of the door and a second at the back of the door the guy selling it said it was made to spread the weight out along the rail it didn't bolt through the roof of the car only to the drip rails. I had a 68 bug and he put the hitch on it in about 30mins. I lived in Huntington Beach Calif. At the time. And boy is hind site 2020 i should have bought it. It was feb of 74 i had just gotten out of the military and bought the bug.

    being someone who drives trailers for recreational purposes this is literally the coolest thing ever and something im shocked never caught on. its pretty awesome how you cant jack knife your trailer backing up. even more convenient you can back up the trailer while driving your car forward, so you can clearly see the trailer tires instead of struggling to see where they are through a rear view mirror which would be incredibly handy for tight parking spots like the trailer pad on the side of my house, which was the side of the house on one side and a retaining wall on the other with a steep incline so last winter i busted the tail light on the retaining wall trying to get it into that tight spot looking in my mirrors not really seeing exactly where the trailer is

    I remember these. I was 10 years old when this concept came out and I thought it was genius. I tried to convince my dad that it would be perfect for weekend camping and fishing trips. He said that he would not be caught dead driving a bug! He said if they make one to fit a Crown Victoria he might consider it? I said. What about a Porsche? He just looked at me funny and said. No! Turns out my grandfather's fought in World War 2 and he just didn't like German cars! But I loved the concept of a fuel efficient affordable camper system. And the maneuverability is unmatched by anything else made even today! Awesome find dude. Now just get a bug and take the family and head off to Disneyland!

      @MichaelPaulCastillo 3 года назад +11

      torque plays a greater role in towing than horsepower. This is because of the 'low-end rpm' generated by the higher levels of torque, which allows the engine to easily carry heavy loads.

    I was all of 9 in '74 but my folks were the kinds that liked to go to look at camp trailers and I've seen one of these in the flesh. Of course we didn't have a VW (we had a Corvair) so it wasn't even a consideration but they did indeed get produced. Most likely in very small numbers as everyone considered them a gimmick since VW's were, by and large, pretty gutless and using one to tow a trailer into the mountains to go camping would've been an exercise in futility if not downright dangerous on a road with a big downhill grade. Congrats on your find!

    I don't know how popular the Beetle was in America, but this accesorie must surely be something that's more easily found in Europe is my thought. Scandinavians, germans, dutch, and so on love caravans/trailers and was more popular back in the days in Europe than RV's/campervans was in America.

Just gutless. You love the features, but you get tired of being the slowest vehicle, and people get tired of being stuck behind you.

      Bugs lacked the necessary power, and all vehicles now that have the capability to tow something just have a hitch on the frame, for a More standardized and more effective attachment

    My mother had a Volkswagen Beetle in the early 1970’s in off white color. I did remembered the car when I was little kid. My mother used to drive a manual transmission in cars. Her last one was a 1980 Ford Escort in a brown station wagon.

      urgentcareguy3 Sorry but it wouldn't fit the VW pan without major surgery. A better fit would be a type IV engine and tranny. The type IV powered the 914 Porsche and later VW Air cooled busses.
