The Longines Avigation BigEye is my favorite of all these watches mentioned. Simply stunning. Tissot and Hamilton have attractive offering too, but the Longines to me definitely looks like a step above.
I am often the last person to support Chinese-made products, particularly in light of their reputation for IP theft. However, we should endorse Chinese products made through legitimate means, such as the Seagull 1963. In this case, they purchased the rights, tooling and documentation to allow manufacture of the old Venus caliber, then applied the Chinese work ethic in order to manage costs. Consequently, the Seagull 1963 project should be applauded and supported as an example of Chinese manufacturing done the 'right way'. Oh and it's a wonderful little watch. One of my favourites and spends more time on my wrist than my Certinas, Tissots and Midos.

Great content and style as always Teddy. As an owner of the ST1901 column wheel movement, I'm always wondering......If any European country had purchased the Venus movement blueprint and machinery and produced exactly the same product in the 60's and continued to do so today, then we'd be undoubtedly looking at a price, even conservatively speaking, of 5 times the amount. The value of watches like the Sugess that house this movement really is off the scale. This is why I'd struggle to let go of more serious funds to go Swiss....
Hi Teddy, thank for the quality content. Would love to see some Russian chronographs in this mix as well. For example Poljot Strela. A great watch with a lot of history (first watch in outer space). Also extremely affordable (400-700 eu). Also, recently I stumbled accross the brand Raketa. Check them out whenever you get the chance, they seem to be doing some very interesting stuff. Cheers
Poljot is a great watch but stolen from Glashutte. After WWII in the Soviet occupation zone, in Glashütte, two companies "Uhren Rohwerkefabrik AG Glashütte" and "Uhren Fabrik AG Glashütte", which were involved in the war production of the Tutima pilot chronograph for the German Wehrmacht - caliber 59 - from 1941 to 1945, were completely dismantled and brought to Moscow. In addition, in 1946/47 in Glashütte, all drawings and the technological documents of the “Wempe” in Hamburg and “A. Lange & Söhne Glashütte ”was translated into the Russian language and handed over as a reparation payment. Furthermore, specialists for the later production in Moscow were trained by “A. Lange & Söhne Glashütte ” personal. From 1949 to 1951, an improved version of the aviator's chronograph caliber 59 was manufactured with this machine park and initially also with movement parts from Glashütte.

Sugess panda eye chronograph using a seagull movement with gooseneck regulator £140. Beautiful watch let's just hope it lasts 5 years before servicing. Or as you mentioned will it be a case of simply buying a new watch?
Idk what the heck bulova was thinking the lunar pilot in 40-41mm with a 48mm lug to lug and 20mm strap would sell like wildfire. Currently it’s an absolute behemoth of a piece.
I have the automatic version of the Hamilton panda chrono and love it. It's thick, but like Teddy says it kind of sits in the flat part of your wrist and therefore wears more nicely than you would expect. Excellent daily piece, goes with almost any outfit.
For those with smaller wrists on a budget: I own the Seiko SNDC33 which is perfect for my 6in wrist and it's like $100. Super smart after I swapped out the strap for a Collareb leather one. Strong contender for best budget quartz chronograph imo
One of the best videos explaining the differences and price points of chronograph movements Teddy. Also good to hear your views on the pros and cons of each type. The whizzing sound of the Valjoux 775X movement if I recall correctly is the rotor free wheeling in the direction that it is not winding the movement as it winds in one direction only (apologies Teddy I'm sure you know all this already). It's also interesting to hear your view on the Seagull for service given the cost to purchase and the cost to service. Personally I hate to see things thrown away but I guess that includes money. Modular systems are fine and have been used my many luxury makers including TAG who up until a few years ago used it inside the Monaco termed the Caliber 12 (and 11 unless I'm mistaken) with a ETA or Sellita base matched with a Dubois Depraz chrono module. Rumour has it as you state that the chrono module (not being the primary time keeping part) is sometimes replaced instead of serviced separately as special tools are also required to service the module.
I just picked up the new Seiko Speedtimer SSC813, the panda dial version. Great solar quartz watch option. Great size over the Bulova Lunar Pilot 50+ lug to lug. I have a 6.25-6.5 inch wrists, and the Speedtimer sits flush on my wrist. Prices are creeping up, over retail though.
I know people won’t like this comment, but if you’re looking for function there’s nothing wrong with a digital watch. I think it's a bit strange to focus solely on swiss chronographs. Why not mention Seiko with their 8R46 and 8R48 movements. They are a good competitor to the longines, in the same price range. Column wheel, vertical clutch; the last one being another thing not mentioned in this video, despite it giving multiple distinct horological advantages; not unimportant to watch afficionado's
In the low price range you could also consider some mecha quartz movement like the Dan Henry 1964 with the Seiko VK63. For 250$ it's a great affordable chrono.
Interesting video! One point though, there is a big question on Seagull 1963’s authenticity. Baltic Bicompax is better choice in my opinion. Although devoid of historical value, The Bicompax uses the same ST19 movement, comes with an exhibition caseback and gets great support from Baltic’s service support. What are you thoughts on this?
If it’s made in China then it’s only cheap because the company is being funded by the Chinese Communist Party and profits are going back to them as well. They do this to undermine similar production in non-communist countries. This is well know and well documented. China is also the worst polluter on the planet and there’s the not insignificant problem of how badly workers are treated there with many no better than slaves on starvation wages. Oh and I loved “ movement APPROPRIATED from the Swiss”. Just like they “APPROPRIATE” all tech I’m sure. Spend yes but be responsible.
I now own 2 Steinhart Chronographs and both are great watches for the price.I have had my Nav-B 44mm for 9 years and the Ocean One Vintage Chrono for 3 years.
I get the weird feeling the guy doesn't like Zeppelin. The company makes beautiful watches, it's a company with a history, and the guy doesn't say anything about these. Somewhere in one video there is 5 seconds about the watch and that's it. Speaking of chronographs, the Zeppelin 100 Jahre sweeps the look of these watches you show.
"with of course there being some more competitively priced outliers." As I observed before, the modern use of "with" makes for extremely awkward sentences. I don't even know what "with there being" even means. "there being" is happening "with" something?
1:20 I dont like the numbers cut off 2:15 that's not a "true" Sea-Gull , the real one doesn't have a exhibition back, However, I prefer this one, it's the same watch but can actually get it for under$200 most of the time. 9:23 I love the looks of the Hamilton
those sea-gull st19 movements are not a joke, their seconds hand is a bit jumpy as some have said but my watch with this movement comes in at +0-5 a day and usually averages out to 2-3 seconds a day and I don't know if you can get an entry level swiss chronograph that accurate out of the box. Just find a microbrand that offers to service the watch at a reasonable price with a look you like when it's time and you should be golden for an entry level chronograph.
there is nothing wrong with the bulova moon watch except it can measure up till only 59mins 59sec .plus the original B moonwatch is actually mechanical but this is high end quartz technology , it ain't really the same feel and movement unlike the Omega moonwatch and seems like a cheap attempt to trick people to buy. More chronograph should actually have 12 hours chronographs like some seiko meca quartz or quartz models
first one is not original seagull... its also not fake one.... but original doesnt have engraving on crown, and it has 2 lines of text on dial... you also dont see movement at the back side
I’m in the minority, I can’t stand chronographs. It takes away from the timepiece in a overdone cluttered kind of way. No one actually uses that crap unless flying or diving.
Best entry-level chronograph? Any watch with Seiko Mecha-Quartz! These watches are usually cheap and let you have a taste of how it feels to have a chrono on your wrist before pulling a trigger on something more expensive 🤷♂️
I’ve had a Hamilton Intra-matic for less than a year. The screw down crown has broken and the date increment button no longer works. I regret purchasing Hamilton.
Seen a couple of reviews and comments, in which the writer complained about the hands of the seagull watches either fell off or arrived already being fallen off. Safe to say, that changed my intentions to purchase one.
Funny that you posted this video today, I’ve been thinking about chronographs all day and love the Hamilton you featured. Been looking for a budget chrono but you kinda confirmed what I was starting to suspect, that they really don’t exist hahaha. Unless they’re quartz. I guess for me, a $300 Bulova it is then.
The big disappointment with these two Hamiltons is that even though they removed the the automatic rotor, the thickness is the same as the automatic version. The automatic ones are the same size and will run better because of being automatically topped off. And whoever says "watches aren't for telling the time", they don't really like watches, they just like the prestige of wearing a little mechanical marvel on their wrist. Might as well wear a Movado or MVMT.
To be fair, the space they saved with the rotor allowed them to put a really nice domed sapphire crystal to get that vintage plexi look. The point is, it should visually wear thinner as well as getting the aesthetic. The automatic version of the Hamilton has a pretty much dead flat crystal.
Use a dirt cheap digital for this. At the end of the day you want a nice brand on your wrist without the extra 2 holes in your watch for water ingress over time. Almost no one needs this feature.
I bought the Seagull 1963 just for the social credit points! BING CHILLING!

7750 movement is the best. love how that rotary turns like a motor with minimal movement. thats not negative , thats a good thing. have them on xwind and hydroconquest
Great list. The Certina DS Chronograph Automatic at £1600 should also be in this list.
Totally agree. They offer a lot for the price. Certina is often forgotten when it comes to quality offers for the price 🐢✌
I bought the Longines Avigation Big Eye a few months back, it's a beauty. Such and elegant watch which i get a lot of comments on.
In my opinion the Seagull (swiss brand venus) is to prefer. Thanks for moderation Teddy Baldassarre. Greetings from Germany to everybody.
My broken Sugess Panda Chronograph Watch - Day 20 - Shenzhen CXH Trading Store - 1963 Panda Eyes
About to purchase a Seagull 1963 40mm with sapphire crystal for €325 (About $500 AUD for me, including free worldwide shipping direct from Seagull)
Love the Big Eye. I can’t wait for the non-automatic to be released, that one will definitely go on my wrist.
Towson watch makes the nicest chronograph watch in my opinion. My M250-2B from them blows everything you showed away and only cost 2,500 usd.
I'm confused, is the servicebility issue is only for the seagull's movement or for all mechanical chronograph?
Lunar Pilot would have been perfect if it weren’t 45mm. Ridiculously oversized!
"with of course there being some more competitively priced outliers." As I observed before, the modern use of "with" makes for extremely awkward sentences. I don't even know what "with there being" even means. "there being" is happening "with" something?
1:20 I dont like the numbers cut off
2:15 that's not a "true" Sea-Gull , the real one doesn't have a exhibition back, However, I prefer this one, it's the same watch but can actually get it for under$200 most of the time.
9:23 I love the looks of the Hamilton
Sorry I’m still new to the world of wrist watches. By mechanical do you mean you have to wind them up and they aren’t battery operated?
those sea-gull st19 movements are not a joke, their seconds hand is a bit jumpy as some have said but my watch with this movement comes in at +0-5 a day and usually averages out to 2-3 seconds a day and I don't know if you can get an entry level swiss chronograph that accurate out of the box.
I've been having a hard time deciding on a st19. How do you feel about the hemel air wing?
I'm in the same boat. Been looking at getting a Hemel Air all year.
how about Seagull Double Skeleton M182SK Blue / Black Hand Automatic Watch ? could you make a review on it
I wish Bulova would make their lunar pilot in smaller size. It’s just way too big for my 6.25 inch wrist
first one is not original seagull... its also not fake one.... but original doesnt have engraving on crown, and it has 2 lines of text on dial... you also dont see movement at the back side
I was planning to buy the Hamilton today and this video just helped me to make that final decision! Thank you
And what did you buy ?
@@Thisfutureman Hamilton reverse panda with brown leather strap
@@USAonAir very good choice !!!
100% Dan Henry 1937 covers my chrono and also dress piece. Definitely scratches the itch!
Bruh. I'd take the Timex expedition supernova or weekender over all of these anytime. Nickle plz
sorry but these watches are bland. Nothing exciting about the dials. I've selected the tissot chrono auto for 1700 as my main watch.
Can reviewers please stop saying crap things eg: complication or Indices - as these words dont exist in the real watch world ok.
i think the best entry level swiss chronograph i would suggest the tissot couturier automatic chronograph....0 regrets on getting it ( 750 usd )
Dude, where did you get that jacket from?! Is it suade or wax leather or something? Can anyone assist? Great vid as always.
I’ve had a Hamilton Intra-matic for less than a year. The screw down crown has broken and the date increment button no longer works. I regret purchasing Hamilton.
I wonder what d oyou think about the Zeppelin brand. Zeppelin 7680 in example.
Seen a couple of reviews and comments, in which the writer complained about the hands of the seagull watches either fell off or arrived already being fallen off. Safe to say, that changed my intentions to purchase one.
I have a Movado Circa gold on alligator strap for about a thousand. I don't use the crono feature but the piece is beautiful.
I have a tissot v8 automatic. Can’t beat it for the price.
No one wants to be the poor guy with a seagull on their wrist. "Nice watch! what's that called?" "It's a shit bird seagull!!! "💩
No reply Ted? I guess you only reply to favorably positive feedback from the people who you lead.
China #1
I REALLY hope that Bulova releases a smaller chronograph!
Hamilton’s are always on point
Fantastic, well researched vid as usual…good job Teddy…
How about Timex Marlin Chronograph with a bracelet?
Anyone else think that Seagull caliber looks like a Caliber 321 knockoff?
Wish that Bulova was smaller and automatic…
No Hamilton started making chronographs in the early 60s, i own a few of them
With Aliexpress selling the 1963 for £130 servicing is pointless.
One of the few channels I watch even when I'm not interested in the watch type being featured.
I know this video is old, but does anybody have thoughts on the Dan Henry Chronograph?
@@stuartcole4845 I had not paid enough attention to notice that. Thank you for mentioning it.
Bulova Lunar Pilot? Predicting before viewing.
Use a dirt cheap digital for this. At the end of the day you want a nice brand on your wrist without the extra 2 holes in your watch for water ingress over time. Almost no one needs this feature.
I'm sick of hearing entry level on a 2 grand watch, how is that entry level?
ETA caliber C01.211 - Tissot V8
Orient Neo 70’s is another great quartz option!!
