How to Love the Voice You Have

  • Hi guys I'm Madeline Harvey. And thank you so much for hanging out with me today. So if you've been with me for a little while you know that I love talking about things that are all a part of the exploration process with your voice and love me some technique. But I love even more the human heart of singing because it's deep it's it's where all the treasure is buried. It's where all the good stuff is and it's why we sing. So today I want to talk about something that is very crucial to the learning process with your voice and that is how to appreciate the voice that you already have and ultimately come to love the voice that you have now. Most people when they start to train their voices there is this really twisted relationship that we kind of all have with ourselves and our voices and that is something that we are completely ashamed of. Our voices are sound is something that we're ashamed of or something that we're embarrassed by or something that maybe even disgusts us. And so when we have that kind of relationship with our voice we carry forth into lessons with this sheer determination to change everything about who we are. And that's no good that's no good. And I'll tell you why your voice is controlled entirely by your nervous system. It's a beautiful thing. That means your thoughts your feelings there. They're the instant manifestation they're instantly manifest in your voice. Now that means if you don't like who you are if you don't like what you have to say you're going to send those impulses through your body that that trap the voice and the locket inside of the body and that makes obviously that makes it harder to sing right. It sets a domino effect a chain reaction of tension and that it can feel like it's so micromanaged and so maneuvered and so manipulated from one note to the next note to the next note and part of that is we said we just said it way too many conditions for the voice. Now a condition is as simple as I want to sound good. Well that's a big condition. That's a big condition. Now I'm not saying that the opposite is sounding bad. It just is that when you really want to sound good you tighten around the voice that limits the spectrum of choices that your voice can make and your voice is designed to be spontaneous. So let's say I want to sound good is a really big condition. The other might be I want to sound like my favorite artist or it needs to be on every pitch. God forbid I sing off of one pitch here or there. It needs to be loud. It needs to be this it needs to be that needs you know I'm so on and so forth. When you have that that much conditional response for the voice it will lock the voice into a place that it can not change from. Now that's that's no good when you're singing because music is literally energy in motion. Emotion is energy in motion. So if you're tight around the voice it can't move and if it can't move then pressure is going to build tension is going to build and ultimately it's going to start shaking it's going to start wobbling and then Will what do we do when that happens will we turn some are how dare it. How dare it wobble. And that creates again a push pull mechanism. So the answer is very simple but it's very sophisticated and I'm going to talk about that with you. The answer is to allow your voice to flow allow your voice to be what it is right now. Now I can feel you getting tight around that maybe because sometimes people think that if I allow my voice to be what it is then that just is like a shorthand way of saying I'm doomed to have this voice for all eternity I'm doomed to sound the way that I do now for all eternity. And that's not true in the least. You are a dynamic being you change from day to day. You change from moment to moment. So your voice is also dynamic. It's an expression of who you are. So what we have to do in lessons or in your practice in your own experimentation is you have to create first an environment where that spontaneity and flow can happen. Now allowing is a wonderful way to do that. So what does that mean. That means that you're not going to react anymore to what your voice does that's so hard. That's so hard but a wonderful way to come into allowing IS to play.

This is my biggest nemesis, for sure. I can't count the number of times my singing teacher has said "you don't need to make it sound pretty" or "you're holding back, just let it fly". Control, control, it's so hard to let go of the control.

This was a big problem for me. I was so fearful of singing in front of people for the majority of my life. I was so concerned about what people would say, or mainly, what I thought they would say. It was more of me criticizing myself, instead of using what God has given me. I am a singer/songwriter and I have learned to be myself and not worry about whether people like me or not. I love to sing and I enjoy putting smiles on people's faces because I am using my gift to be a blessing!

the problem that I constantly run into is that whenever I have to sing and I hear that I sound bad (which happens 99% of the time since I'm a beginner with no proper training) I immediately start to exaggerate my singing, add noises, accents and whatnot. because it's easier for me to make it all sound as a joke, like I'm not actually trying to sound good and it's all comedy. at this point I'm so used to playing with my voice and having fun with it that I can't take myself seriously anymore. I hope this makes sense, it's not easy to explain thoughts in the second language at 5 a.m. lol

Watching and hearing your words...so healing and soothing. Thank you so much for sharing! I have loved singing since I was a little girl. Somewhere along the way ( through pressure, disconnect, fear and sorrow) I lost my voice. And my joy of it and love for it. It actually became a heavy burden. I tried giving singing up, but I can't. Its my soul. I allowed myself to re- discover my voice and learn singing again. This video has inspired me, to allow myself to be silly, to play, to explore, to "let loose"...I feel today might be the first day of something new. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this beautiful message. I have really been tearing myself down internally for a while now, and I've realized that it is happening in regards to my voice as well. Some days I criticize myself to the point where singing is the source of immense anxiety and I contemplate giving it up entirely. I know that this fight goes beyond singing for me, it is a fight about me accepting myself, unapologetically. Learning to play, have fun, not worry about whether my sound or myself is acceptable or not. Thank you. I really needed to hear this

Thank you for making videos like these that are centered around a more positive mindset. Lately, I've been struggling to accept certain parts of my voice because it's a lot raspier and resonates lower than most women's... and I can't hit any note above F5 to save my life. It seems like for months I've been trying to force my voice into being something it's not, and last week my voice finally cracked. I couldn't sing at all. So when I came upon your channel, there was this sense of relief that I hadn't felt in a long time. Anyways, this is a long comment in an attempt to say thank you :)

Thank you from NYC! I joined two choirs (one traditional and one rock) to learn to sing. While the directors are amazing and every single member is supportive, especially of newbies like me, I'm my own worse enemy. I compare my voice (unfairly) to others who have been singing for years. And when I upload my audio or video for the now-virtual concerts, I cringe at the sound of my voice, although it will be beautifully blended in with all the others. And, instead of feeling proud "I did something I never did before!" So, thank you for this most inspiring message - and encouragement to play rather then digging in and getting frustrated at the baby steps at progress. I'm probably making much more progress that I allow myself! I am a devoted fan!

It's always so painful, the rejection of a failed audition, I seriously have to rehab my self-esteem for quite some time before I feel safe singing again. This helped me remember why I love doing it and as a result helped me want to sing again.

Well the thing is that i think im ok to play with my voice, i just want to be like alone with no neighbors around (my uncle lives like on the second floor of the house and i can even hear his dogs walking on the roof). I live in a village and i have like a story with some people and most of the stories are bad, so its like i trap my self for no reason because, its like i can feel their energy and ther criticism around me before i even start playing with my voice (i mean i have sang before but you know doing or trying to do something like properly is not something to like be easily ashamed of). I know that i should not care about them ( i mean they might not even care i just have this fear) but I am working on it to liberate myself from the chains and the problems that some of them have caused to me in the past and i sadly have continued to create all over the years!!! I hope i can make it and make my everyday happier and more positive even if im around from people that have caused suffering to me in the past!!! I hope you can liberate yourselfs from what holds you back and trust me as i know for my self i also know for you too you can do it ... yes you can just believe in you and in your in-strenth and you will make it. Have an awesome day!!!

Ohmygosh this is such an important video- every singer and artist should watch this. I've struggled so much to love my voice but you put it in words, in the exact words I needed to hear. Singing is so much fun when you feel safe to be yourself

I’ve finally started doing that this year. I’ve wanted to sing my whole life, but always been told how horrible I was. Well, maybe I’m too old to care anymore, I don’t know, but I’m just doing it anyway now. 💕
