Stop Criticizing Yourself When You Sing

  • Would you like to know how to stop criticizing yourself when you sing? In this video we are going to learn how. I'm Madeline Harvey. Thank you so much for hanging out with me today. What I thought might be best for us today is to freestyle just a little bit just to get real on the topic of the critical mind. We all got one and it's not always pretty but what can we do about it so that our head stays clear and in the game and that we can move forward in a useful meaningful way in our creative lives. So it's my hope by the end of today's video that we both learn something about ourselves and then we both have the tools to bring to the job in just the making of art and the making of creativity. So I can feel the heaviness on this topic our critical mind as singers. It's it's a little out of hand guys. If I'm going to be honest with you it's a little it's a little much and it's out of hand but we can we can do something about this now as artists which just know that if you're here watching this video with me this is what I consider you an artist. And I do believe that it's the artist's job to be sensitive and to stay connected to their inner world that they used to create and they share in ways that are both meaningful for them and for the outside world. But when our creative mind not creative mind our critical mind gets a little too over dominant to the point where it's destructive. We are still demonstrating our sensitivity but in a collapsed non productive way. So we got to we got to find the tools that are necessary to keep us turning it around and using those thoughts that come in as a means to again gather experience gather insight but move forward because often. And we all know what this is like. Often times whether we're singing in a recording studio or on a stage or maybe even just playing around with our phone and we listen back sometimes. There is that whole god like we just recoil and pull ourselves in and it's just like the wait. Hot faces get really red. We feel hot and we feel the crushing weight of sometimes straight up disappointment. We feel we failed ourselves in one way. But it's what happens next that determines how we move forward or if we move forward at all. Usually we'll hear something in our mind that says something. I mean pick your poison. Who do you think you are. That was laughable. Yeah right. Nobody's going to take a serious if they're all laughing at you. You'll never be a singer. You're delusional etc. etc. We've all thought something like that before. That is a destructive critical mind and just know that we all have something in our psyche in our minds and our headspace that actually wants to cut off all life all creative life. All new fresh experience. So that's what's going on. And that's really helpful to know. But a healthy creative mind asks questions a healthy creative mind doesn't make judgments. It doesn't go. It asks questions like well how can you do that better. Or if you didn't like that tone try this. That might work better for you or that some ideas good. But let's change it to this. That might be better. So it makes suggestions and ask questions. If you are having a thought that says stop don't saying zip it lock it and put in your pocket for ever. You are not talking to the critical mind you're talking to that part of your psyche that just wants you to go back in your hole and never come out. And we know sometimes we eat some overdo that sometimes we do but we also know that we can't we just can't. We are creators that's what we do in life. So again the healthy critical mind will be one that asks questions. So as your recording as you're singing and you do something in hindsight of course I'd rather you not be thinking about it in the moment that you're singing but let's say after you've sung and you're watching and you're observing and you're assessing to ask questions like What would you like to see differently. What would you like to try. You want to try something new there. How about a nice ride. You know it's all the whole point is to move forward. New life you are already sensitive. You're here. You're watching this video you know what this feels like so don't demonstrate that sensitivity in a way that attacks yourself. Use it to learn something from. That's the big difference. There's this study and it's like a whole field of just thought leadership right now is just discerning the difference between mindsets right. There's like a fixed mindset and there's a growth mindset and that right there is what we're talking about a fixed mindset that's kind of obsessed with the result. The growth mindset is more of like using what you just did. Improving upon it. You mean always learning value value. Value there's value absolutely everywhere. That way you stay connected to Joy you stay connected to the fun and you're sort of aiming for that.

You don't understand how much I truly needed this today. I recently started singing again after years of having horrible, condescending teachers who made me feel so low. I feel like I have definitely improved thanks to your wonderful videos! However today I hit a moment of massive criticism and I almost didn't want to do it anymore. This is perfect, thank you!

Your words got me thinking. I look back at a performance and think, "Oh, I hate this but at the same time it happened." I basically just let it go and try to do a better job next time. Another thing that sounded like me was trying something over and over again. So far it hasn't affected me, but I feel soon it might if I keep it up. Thank you for opening up my eyes to certain aspects and perspectives. You truly are a one of a kind vocal coach.

Considering I’ve had to retrain my voice at least three times (give a little dive deeper and you’ll see why), such that I screamed and threw myself around & into walls incessantly throughout last week, I really needed reassurance through this video. Singers are always asked to be impeccable just to bear their souls out - namely because, what are you going to bring to the table if your voice lacks beauty or soul? Two very different things, granted. Thankfully I’ve never been lacking in soul. Beauty is something to constantly sculpt - and soul can always be further engineered, as we know. Freedom to let it out, to experiment, to be wrong sometimes... it makes me feel a little more sane. Thanks Madeleine.

Hey thank you for sharing, Madeleine. as a vocal and guitar teacher myself, this is so vital and it is so challenging for me to get these concepts to resonate with my students. I guess it just might come with the territory bet us artistic aficionados may have some self image and low self-esteem challenges built into our genetic imprinting or something. Still trying to figure that out, especially with my autistic students and those with intense mood disorders. So long novel short, I sincerely appreciate all that you do. ❤️😇🎶🎯🎙️

Then I start to think that I am not good enough and many times when I see someone on TV or Internet I feel that my voice is nowhere near to be good. These thoughts are very hard to get rid of . Keep moving on and practicing is best solution in this dip situation . .This video is very helpful and inspiring .I'm gonna watch this video every time when I 'll get such thoughts.😃

I spent a few years with a vocal coach, it was rough for the first 6 months. (These were not one on one sessions.) He had figured out I have PTSD from early on in my life. He went through the critical mind with me, and it helps me so much to be able to sing without judgement of self. I haven't been practicing at all over the last almost 2 years until this last week. Most of my judgements have come back. Thank you for reminding me of the critical mind, I know this stuff but it has to be heard once in a while. My tension goes right to my vocal chords and things wont work quite right. I have to get them to relax. Then my whole perspective on life changes. Vocals is the main thing in life that will relieve my stress. Thank you taking time to post this video.

As an instrumental musician who started singing much later in life, this resonates a LOT. The precision thing you talked about, specifically, is so real. It's the disconnect between knowing what it "should" sound like (whatever that means, right?) and what we actually sound like. It's so hard to not say those negative things and think so critically...but this is so helpful in turning that around, so thank you!

I think the only reason I ever got decent as a singer is I just started singing alone in my room for the fun of it and didn't care if I was sounding bad. It's true. Critical thinking destroys you.

    Thank you 🤗🌹😊
You're right. From the highest pick of my "mountain experience vocal development" (metaphysically speaking)- you need to be your truly Best Friend in order to find Your Voice, your Path and your determinated position in this Profession .
Critical thinking can make you really vulnerable, that's obvious. The main and optimistic thing, as I feel and observe in my daily vocal practice- you should remember that you MUSTN'T be like this singer, female or male, whose song you are trying to sing. You MUSTN'T be great and so heart and soul touching straight from the first notes or seconds of the song, which you are singing. You MUSTN'T have deadlines in meaning "have finally sounded like total Profi"... and if you of course😂 haven't reached these deadlines and haven't started sing like some vocal Titans or Genius Guys/Ladies- you MUSTN'T BE CRITICAL, ANGRY, HARMFUL TO YOURSELF, DEAR FRIEND ❗🤗♥️
So....be kind and thoughtful of yourself , please !!!! Give your Chance to stay True, stay Real and stay close as much as possible to Your Core and your natural and spiritual Sound....! That's the main Idea. To be unique in your own way .
I wanna add , that sadly, but nowadays there are really obvious Trends, what "top sound or voice should looks and sounds like"... 🤦❌⚡you like under pressure even more, than years later.
Ariana Grande, Aguilera, Madonna, Justin Bieber etc... Adele, Rihanna etc... etc etc
I mean , that okay, they can sing hard songs and be effective on stage , even true about emotions and feelings while they are singing and painting pictures with their voices and energy....but...HUGE BUT... Its fucking business and huge NLP technologies , which are determined to push all of us not to the right way, if you know what I mean. Its just absolutely fake standards of singing and "how to be a real singer" and what ways of singing different notes, what should be emphasized are simply translating to our subconscious mind. Its like total programming and creating inside us Fake Picture of how our Voice should sound and who we are in our true nature. ( but these manipulations have only one goal - we started compare ourselves to the standards , which are not standards at all😅😂)
So.... great video, thank you so much again for you Strength , Truth and positive energy, you like good Friend on which we can rely on:) 🎉❤

5.10 is absolutely right. I went through the same thing around 2011 &' I gave up singing -Forever' or so I thought. But I just couldn't. There was always this restless, burning desire in me that always wanted to just start singing again - but I didn't coz i was too scared how I'd sound after years of giving up. In 2018 I started following an idol group that inspired me in many ways, and I just couldn't keep it in anymore. So I started practicing again. Though I do hear an improvement in my voice, this hasn't been an easy journey so far, coz my critical mind is "very critical". Thank you ever so much for this video! I needed this A LOT!

Love your videos (you had me at "Muffin Top"), I think my voice has improved with your tips! I have no designs to be a professional singer, but have been playing with local ukulele groups and even performed a few times at open mics. My ukulele group decided to do a "lockdown" performance via individuals recording themselves playing/singing along with a backing track, which I have never done before. After many attempts, several curse words, and one spilled gin and tonic, took a breath and watched this and other posts. Imagined you perched on my shoulder in tiny stilettos reminding me that it is more about the performance, and nailed it. Thanks so much, you are a great inspiration!!!!

Authenticity, thank you for bringing that up. The voice does reflect the inner world, I guess I was taking that for granted. I knew it but didn't "know" it, if that makes sense Which made me wonder if that might be one of the ways we know when someone is lying? If it comes through their voice as they speak? Just a side thought. I thought the discerning all came from intuition... But hmmmm...

Word! (me too friend...me too!) But I think that's the work. Just finding ways to be a little gentler with ourselves in our own process of becoming.

Thank you for your common sense video ! ♥️🤩
I often forget that the main thing is not to sing perfectly but also with the heart. 😌😅 I often put a lot of pressure on myself. 😬
On the other hand, the hardest thing for me to manage is not the self-criticism but that of my family which makes fun of me kindly, but all the time, each time I sing in my room...
I sing on the app Starmaker to manage my stress and clear my head and I try not to pay too much attention to it, but I 'm saddened that they don't make a minimum of effort to avoid making fun all the time 😐
    I know I don't sing well at all 😶
Someone has the same problem ?
Thanks again for your video !
Your advice also works for many areas too ! 👏✨♥️
Ps: sorry for my bad english I'm french 😅

It's so crazy to me. I always hear people use the world "elegant" . I never really visualized it. But I think you might be it, lol. From your posture , to the way you speak, to your hand movements.. your intro even down to your tattoo. lol. I feel dumpy just looking at you.

Do you think the voice is an instrument or part of a person ?? Lately i struggle to find connection with my craft and whatever it is that i like , your advice is so relatable thank ü

I believe to free the voice is to free the person. It's like magic. It is the instant manifestation of everything that person is. The only reason why it's sometimes unruly is because it is really hard for us to let go and allow the voice to show us who it is...who we really are.
