  • Singing is hard. Every vocal artist will go through the same grueling spiritual warfare. Will the world care about my art? Will it even make a difference? Am I good enough? We sometime even give our power away to others, hoping that their opinions will validate all of our effort and confirm our aspirations with accolades. But what if those people that we’ve entrusted tell us something we don’t want to hear? What if they say that we suck?

I often feel like it helps to keep in mind the kind of people who would tell you "you suck" are not musicians whose opinions or feedback you should respect or take seriously. The musicians whose feedback you'd want wouldn't give it if they didn't have something actually positive about it, probably because they wouldn't waste their time or musical energy there. And if you asked them for their feedback and they didn't think you were good, they would probably not just say "you suck," they would have a musical reason why they don't like your voice, which even if it's harsh might be something that would be worth hearing.

From the time I could talk, I knew I was called by my creator to sing. My voice was usually not received well by those who listened to me. Of course, this is and was very discouraging. Then one August day I received a prophecy that I would be blessed in the later season. I was so excited. It was August and the later season was right around the corner. The weeks passed by from August to September, then October and November. Things did not get better, they got worse than they had ever been. By January I felt that my friend had missed what God had told her and moved on. This was in August 1987. In 2010 I was living life, and while in prayer I heard the Holy Spirit ask, "are you ready"? Huh? Ready for what? He said, "Your later season". He said it's almost here. Then it dawned on me that later season meant life later season not calendar year later season. Things began to get better and brighter. Finally I met RUclips, then Madelaine Harvey RUclips channel. Her method of teaching and the tools she teaches help so much. It's like bringing my voice from out of a buried place. My voice was always back in my throat and it sounded muffled and mousy. But session with "YEAST" I immediately sang differently!!! Madeleine you truly a gift. You therapeutic musical method is like physical therapy for my voice. I tried so many things and they weren't any help to me. God sent you to keep His promise to me regarding my latter season. 1Peter 3:8 says that 1000 years to us is as 1 day to God. He promised Issac to Abraham and 25 years later....he was delivered RIGHT ON TIME!!! His time, His ways are not our ways; nor His thoughts our thoughts, Isaiah 55:8 - 10. Never give up!!! Never stop!!! Keep moving forward!!! Make Him smile!!! Love you Madelaine aka Aretha....my Baby Sister

This is so insightful. Thank you Madeleine. Unfortunately exposing your soul by singing to cop mean criticism goes with the territory I’ve finally realised. You talked about all the issues like feeling that persueing singing is delusional. Consequently I spent many years starting and stopping. At 67 I finally have recorded 2 songs I’ve been singing for years. The voice would not leave me alone. And like another commenter I believe it’s calling from God

I'm my worst critic!!!! But then again I don't sing in front of ANYONE because I won't feel ready at all especially because I'm 95% straight toned and 5% Vibrato 😢
