Your woods/ national park stories are the best. I'm from Kentucky and have been to Harpes Head Road, its a pretty cool little sight. Thanks for the stories, keep 'em coming!
I grew up in the small Maine town at the very very end of the AT (or very beginning, but as I understand it very few people take that route) and definitely agree, at the end of every season we’d let hikers come grab a shower and some hot food, maybe share in some local plant life, and the stories are 100% all worthy of being read here, they’re not all negative or horrifying, but basically every hiker I’ve met looks and talks like they just got back from the war, those guys see, hear, and certainly go through some real ish, man. For a while I kind of thought like, they’re just all in on some kind of inside deal to tell crazy stories to freak out locals or earn some campfire story cred, but the more I look into it the more genuinely fascinating and hard-to-explain it all gets. Completely love these stories, and it adds something to them to have seen so many grizzled trail dudes just hike off down the many many miles of deep woods roads back to like, halfway across the country with just a backpack and a thumb up, serious respect for everyone that takes that trek.
When I was in my teens, I spent much time with my grandparents in the foothills of the border between northern North Carolina and Virginia. I used to ride an off-road motorcycle back in the “holler”, sometimes taking fishing 🎣 equipment. Sometimes I heard creepy sounds, but never saw anything. After getting ‘creeped out’ a few times, and listening to Grandpa’s stories of escaped prisoners, I opted to hang out in less remote areas.
I live in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. I've dubbed myself Squatch because I roam the woods, make a lot of noise to see who is around and sadly can't find too many places to fit in amongst people.
Story #3 hits home as a fellow New Jersian with an obsession with ruins and a love for the Appalachian trail. ❤️ What is the draw? Is it the energy of the past still vibrating from walls within that seems to be the pull? Or the breathtaking untamed beauty of the ruins itself? The irony of man taking over land just to be overrun by the course of nature again, the fine line between life or death? Or. My favorite reason of all growing up with my nose buried in Weird NJ magazines during my teenage years that made me count down the days until my friends and I got our licenses to start ticking off the destinations on our list. Ah, to have that sense of wonder without that sense of fear as adulthood brings on wisdom. And Joel. Happy father’s day. You are truly by far my most favorite narrator and I count down the minutes every “Monday, Wednesday and Friday..” for when I get out of work to jump in my car and start Let’s Read up for my drive home. You are my morning routine, my commute to work and everything in between. Keep up the amazing work. I think I speak for everyone when I say we love you and appreciate everything you do and you deserve the best father’s day ever!
Yes I’m so early! Smokin a J and taking my dog for his nice long night time walk rn… this came at the *perfect* time… like usual ☺️. Have a good night everyone!! 🌙 xx.
My friend decided to hike the whole AT and before he left he started acting really strange, said he was “preparing his mind” fair enough I thought. He made mention that he was going to find God. He called me 6 months later and the first thing I ask was, did you find God? And he said kinda but I’m gonna walk back down. After 6 months he did it all over again. After all this he was never the same again. I’m not sure what happened on that hike. He called me years later in the middle of the night and when I picked up he just whispered my name… CREEPY…he started talking a little crazy, he probably was drunk. But I decided then maybe we just shouldn’t talk, because he weirded me out. Something on the AT trail changed him
Likely whats wrong with him happened before the trail. He went on the adventure to find answers or clarity. But being alone with them thoughts that long likely crushed him
lol he was talking weird before he went about preparing his mind and finding god..... like god isn't real sorry bout it.... like how would god appearing out of no where make any more sense than the universe appearing out of nowhere. the idea of a god doesn't really answer anything regardless
STAGMITES are those critters you get from that 10 pt buck you bagged on your last hunt. STALAGMITES are those things you trip over in the cave while taking care not to bonk your head on the STALACTITES.
I went camping in the Appalachians . I have never went camping anywhere since. I seen something in the middle of the night sitting by the camp fire. ( It wasn't a bear ). That was the last time I went camping
As someone from VA story 3 is very creepy. Mainly because I’m a sophomore in college studying Fish/Wildlife Management and Conservation Biology. If I heard it right, I did a essay on Barbours Creek. This area is under a designated wilderness area, thus meaning there should be NO trapping, hunting etc. It’s not unlikely since Barbours Creek is located next to a National Forest, where those activities are allowed. Still, someone shouldn’t be setting traps on designated wilderness areas without a permit… and those can be hard to get. Stay safe out there.
Ah y’all didn’t figure out why that bear trap incident happened you got good water up in that area and since it’s an area where theirs not a lot of people it’s a great place to make shine that was a message cause they got to close to the stil
ahh, nice didnt realize this was recent. You have so much content, and your reads are always so natural. Like you are telling a casual story to a friend but with a great consistency. Emphasized in the right parts, and with the right tone of voice and pauses. Loved that live stream n chill the other day
Absolutely digging the deep woods/hiking stories! Thanks so much for another great video!🥺 Any chance you might be reading some (cave) diving stories in the future?🌊 From delta p to nitrogen poisoning, those always get under my skin!

i live next to the appalachian mountains and during the pandemic when it wasnt super safe to be inside my friends and I would drive around at all hours, usually parking somewhere random to like, smoke or get out and take a walk. we sometimes would park in parking lots for the trail, and knowing its history, it was always pretty scary, especially at night. there would always be at least one car in the parking lot, and there was no way of knowing if there was someone in there or not, waiting for hikers. its so far out and easy to hide a body out there.
9:20 talks about where I spent several years of my teen life. So crazy! 🤪 4-H Camp were some of the best memories I have of that place. Was a counselor as well. 4-H is big in the area. So trippy when I hear somewhere near where I live/lived on my fav RUclips channels. Glad this didn't happen when I went to camp!
I heard the story of the serial killing brothers briefly covered on Last Podcast but this was a much more thorough and informative write-up and really felt like hearing it for the first time, super appreciated that, the Appalachian trail stories are definitely my favorites.
Thats incredible to know about Mason in story 4. He was rather brutal himself. So to find out he thought the harp Brothers were evil says something..... Mason married a woman for her inheritance. A fortune she inherited from her family and the true love of her life, her childhood sweetheart who died unexpectedly, leaving behind a fortune from him and his family. She herself was a midwife and nurse and the only medical professional for hundreds of miles so she made bank herself. After Mason married her he attempted to get her to disclose the location of her fortune that she kept buried, but she would never tell him.. As a result he tried to kill her twice, I think both times by throwing her off the top of the cave, at cave in rock, il. Ome of the times he thought he'd succeeded and buried her alive. She lived thru all of these attempts on her life until luckily, Mason was tracked down and executed for his piracy crimes, as ur story says. Funny enough tho she lived a very modest life style and had no children and to this day her fortune, the very one that almost got her killed twice, that God knows how big that fortune actually is, is still buried somewhere near a cave that bares her name, around the caves that Mason himself hid out in to ambush ships as they made their way down the river. Around caves that i can only imagine hold so many secrets that they'll never tell.
