Beyond thankful for this tutorial for the Elgato and OBS. Just picked up an HD60-X today, hooked it all up, and was straight up confused after installing OBS. Switch audio is now working both when streaming to friends on discord as well as playing through my monitor / headset when using them. Many thanks, Trui!!
Thank you SO MUCH for making this so clear. I was reading the instructions and reddit posts and it just wasn't connecting in my brain. This clicked lol thank you!

You mean you don't have it pass through to your gaming monitor? You need to attach the 'Output' in your capture card to your monitor. Keep in mind that not all capture cards have a 'output' but all Elgato cards have this feature.
i never really leave comments but for over a year rive been struggling with the audio... it may have been because i wasnt plugged into a 3.0 plug on top of the obs volume setting change, thank you so freaking much
this helped me. I'm not so great when it comes to streaming but with the upcoming pokemon titles, I'll be competing in a shiny race and want to have my set up stream ready and I hope this will fix my audio issue I'd been having. thanks!
I haven't tried that myself yet! However, you probably at least need the dock as that will give you USB ports. The Steam Deck runs on Linux, so it should be possible. Keep in mind that OBS and the Elgato software prioritize windows. So you might run into some problems that way.
3:33 thank you so much for this tutorial. My only question is for the echo if you do the monitor and output option. What’s the best way to get rid of said echo so people watching the stream don’t hear it?
If you record your desktop audio (I think you do as you got an echo on stream), you can just put it on monitor only. It will ONLY send it to your headphones. However, they will hear it through your desktop sound.
thanks a lot for the tutorial: might I add: you NEED to power the switch/dock WITH THE PLUG. Now, this might sound super obvious, but I was previously powering the dock via usb and the connection wasn't working until I shifted from USB power to stardard plug
Wait, you mean powering the dock? Yes, the Nintendo switch dock needs to be powered with the wall plug provided with the dock. Otherwise, the dock won't work.
Tysm for this video, but one question, how do you stream it and have it show on your own monitor at the same time because I’ve been having trouble with that and haven’t been able to resolve it so it would help dearly if you respond.
I just plug the HDMI out cable in a monitor. But i sometimes also just project the sourse from obs as full screen projector (only works with cards that have 0 delay)
@@trui yea true, I’d only stream for fun not making money off it or anything so not worth going out to purchase a bunch of stuff, but I could build it up on pc games then extent to switch if I get the money

very helpful tutorial but for some reason neither of the audio options worked for me i can still only hear the audio in my headphones and not on stream. Do you have any other ideas that i could try also i have a switch oled not sure if that matters? Thanks
You might have your headphones plugged in in the Switch itself. That stops it from sending the audio through HDMI. So plug your headphones into the PC and use OBS advanced audio options instead.

There's nothing stupid about it! I make these tutorials for a reason, look at the number of views, and you instantly know you are not the only one who didn't know how 😉
I have the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2Plus. That have been a hassle connecting to the Switch and the PC. It seemed to me that the monitor had to have internal speakers in order to pick up Nintendo Switch audio at all. hello; when i open my new video capture device on obs the screen doesn't show anything (like, i can stream my switch on discord but not on obs) do you have any solution ?? (i also don't have any sound when i stream my switch on discord) ty in advance !!
I could really do with your help Trui! I have a Nintendo switch elgato HD60S and a chat link cable using a 3.5mm mic and a pair of headphones but I can’t get the audio to work on stream.
What you can also do is run the audio through the HDMI but the you need to go to your advanced audio settings in OBS and make sure you also put it on monitor
You could use only the "in" cable if you have a capture card with instand replay and look at the game in OBS. If you have a capture card with a slight delay I would definitely get a second hdmi cable.
Idk if this is a stupid question or not, but I currently use a capture card so that i can use my DSLR as a webcam. If I wanna also stream my switch, would I have to buy a second one and would that like... lag or anything if i have two capture cards plugged in idk anything about computers and stuff lol
Yes, you need a second capture card. I have the camlink Pro for my cam and the HD60 X for my gameplay. I used to run the Camlink for my camera and the HD60S+ for my gameplay. Both setups work great!
it is possible to play on the switch screen while using the capture card? because a friend only have budget for a cheap card (camlink-like capture card) and i would like to know if that would work
ok so i did all of this yesterday and everything worked great. Got on today and now i cant hear any switch sounds, all settings are still the same. Any idea how to fix it or what may be causing the issue ?
Thanks for your video ! Unfortunately i cant make it work, Is USB3.0 mandatory ? It work with my gamecube but not the switch (i tested every resolutions so far) :( Edit : usb port/cable is indeed mandatory even in low res ! Problem fixed 👌
If the system is old enough to not have native USB 3.0, it likely is too old to have the performance for the HD60 S: help.elgato.com/customer/portal/articles/2376867-elgato-game-capture-hd60-s-system-requirements- The older card the HD60 does support USB 2.0 however it obviously has a lower recording quality (Good enough for your Switch though).

hello! i watched this and came to the realization that my monitor only has one HDMI porthow do I get that to work if I only have one HDMI, would io still plug it in? or do I reque a splitter
Yes! For the PS5 I recommend the Elgato HD60 X as this one can do 4K as well. The one I am unsing HD60S can only do 1080P (but that is the max for the Nintendo Switch anyway)
My monitor is hooked up to my computer via 'Display Port', not HDMI. In other words, my Switch and my OBS run on 2 different outputs. Is that going to be an issue?
The switch itself need to be attached with an HDMI cable. But you could just watch the gameplay in OBS when playing. If you have a card with instand replay (like the one I am showing). If you want to connect it to your monitor you eachter do that with HDMI or with a converter inbetween.
That is annoying! OBS advanced audio option to monitor only or monitor and .. (stream? Not sure out of my head) should normally have to work. Otherwise contact the brand from your capture card.
It’s not letting me! I’m still on stuck on the black screen still, I’ve watched so many videos and I don’t know what to do… how do I get it off the black screen?
@@trui how do I set up the chat link pro cable to work - I can't find a single tutorial to explain the software set up to get anything out of the cable. I have the cable connected as Elgato have suggested and then connected my Steelseries Arctis 1 headset to the cable but nothing no sound. I am using an Elgato HD60S as well.
It doesn’t work for me ( the hdmi option doesn’t show when I have to choose a device).but I have a HDMI already in my pc so idk if that is the problem. Does somebody know what to do.
The HDMI needs to go into the capture card and the Capture card USB needs to go into your PC. You can't directly plugin a hdmi into your pc for this to work. If you mean you already have another monitor on hdmi, that doesn't matter. Then you need to restart everything and make sure your capture card and switch are connected and on BEFORE you start OBS.
I don't think that has anything to do with the capture card as it's lighting if the switch is docked properly, you are intercepting the signal only after that step so you should check your dock/switch and see if there is something wrong there.
Hey so tysm for the video! It’s very helpful, but I do have a question: I’m having video lag in OBS. Like terribly. Is there some setting I should check to try to fix it? I’ve literally been trying to fix it for hours and I’m so frustrated
That depends on what capture card you are using. A LOT of cards don't display instantly. The Elgato HD60S, HD60S+ and HD60X are instand. If you have one of these 3 go to properties and turn off the capture card, then enable it again. If it doesn't work quit obs replug the usb from the capture card and start your switch. Then start OBS.
I'm using that super cheap capture device that you get from Amazon. I just received it today, actually, and am attempting to set-up streaming for the first time. Big thanks to Trui for the help btw. But as for your lag issue, this is something I read about prior ordering any hardware. Your comment was 5 months ago, so I'm sure you're all set, but anyone else that comes along ought to look into an HDMI splitter (ensure that it has mirroring capability). The one I got from Amazon was also very inexpensive (under $20 CAD). This allows you to play on your TV or other monitor with (as far as I can tell) zero lag, while a separate HDMI line runs to your capture card. Hopefully that helps.
Just got the elgato HD60X, and kinda of disappointed in my first few recordings as the capture is a bit laggy, and gets quite pixelated and fuzzy when a lot is going on on the game. Any pieces of advice for this?
Pixelated in OBS or on stream. As the latter is just your bitrate and has nothing to do with the capture card. It shouldn't be laggy so I would contact support if I were you. Unless you have it in USB 2.0 then switch to a 3.0 UBS port.
i didnt get any picture to show on my laptop I mean am new to this and kind of lost I just want to use laptop as monitor no stream or record I use ripsaw x to connect N.switch to laptop Downloaded obs studio But now cant see N.switch on screen
It's easiest to just use a TV or Monitor but if you want to use the laptop it should work like in the video and then watch it on the OBS projector output (as that's full screen)
I'm trying to just use OBS to have a bigger Switch screen display but im having frame issues in Display mode.Ive tried adjusting the FPS but to no luck.Any pointers?
Could be that your PC can't handle it to open an other window. Most games on the Switch offer only 30 fps you might see that more clearly on a big screen You might be using a cheaper capture card. It could be one of these, but I wouldn't be able to tell from here 😉
I am sorry to hear that! Sadly, I can't help with this information. As I can't tell what's going wrong by only knowing that it doesn't work. I hope you will figure it out 🙌

Then you need to restart everything and make sure your capture card and switch are connected and on BEFORE you start OBS.
i connected everything but when i try to turn on my switch it doesn't turn on (the green light on the dock doesn't show)
I don't think that has anything to do with the capture card as it's lighting if the switch is docked properly, you are intercepting the signal only after that step so you should check your dock/switch and see if there is something wrong there.
@@trui ok i found out the problem, i didn't have the power switch wire in-
Hey so tysm for the video!
When i do video capture the only thing that appears is my laptop’s camera
Did you download the Elgato software?
@@trui i only have a desktop. Can it work?
I just wonder why my capture card screen flickers so badly
That is not supposed to happen! Maybe you aren't using USB 3.0? Otherwise definitely contact the capture card manufacturer!
can you make a tutuorial without using the capture card? i cant afford one
Nope. You can buy a super cheap one for 10 bucks (you will see quality difference) but I can't have it magically appear.
Does it matter if it's elgato?
You can use other brands for sure, however I haven't personally used them so I can't guarantee any quality for them.
i didnt get any picture to show on my laptop
I mean am new to this and kind of lost
I just want to use laptop as monitor
no stream or record
I use ripsaw x to connect N.switch to laptop
Downloaded obs studio
But now cant see N.switch on screen
It's easiest to just use a TV or Monitor but if you want to use the laptop it should work like in the video and then watch it on the OBS projector output (as that's full screen)
I'm trying to just use OBS to have a bigger Switch screen display but im having frame issues in Display mode.Ive tried adjusting the FPS but to no luck.Any pointers?
Could be that your PC can't handle it to open an other window.
Most games on the Switch offer only 30 fps you might see that more clearly on a big screen
You might be using a cheaper capture card.
It could be one of these, but I wouldn't be able to tell from here 😉
@@trui Yea it might just be a bad card then cuz I have a solid build.Ive heard there's some Elgado alts so ill consider those for now.Thx anyway
thanks man
Happy to help person with a totally normal name 😝
So it has to be on the dock?
Correct
None of these instructions made my switch audio work. I can heart it but stream can't
I am sorry to hear that! Sadly, I can't help with this information. As I can't tell what's going wrong by only knowing that it doesn't work. I hope you will figure it out 🙌
@@trui i got it to work, but I had to check the box "Use Custom Audio Device"
I still need help i did everything the same but didn't work
Make sure that the capture card is connected before starting your streaming software. Try restarting your PC and see if that works.
@@trui realized I just being dumb af and didn't have my headphone jack connected into my switch I had it in my PC 🙄
What about with an agptek hd video capture card?
Never tried that one myself so I can't garentee anything 😉
