Just a note, your 3.0 USB on your laptop doesn't have to be blue. not every 3.0 USB port is blue. As long as you see an SS (instead of the normal USB symbol) next to your USB port, it'll take 3.0. I have 2 ports on my laptop with this symbol and then a normal USB port without the SS next to it. I can confirm that this works in the USB port that has an SS next to it even though it isn't blue. I hope this helps anyone else.
@@mdunlocked1557 it could be many things. Maybe you plugged the In/Out wrong. Or perhaps you might not have the correct settings. Maybe your tv is a bit older. (I have an older tv that, for some reason, doesn't display my gameplay on it even though it has HDMI. I use a more modern tv and it magically works. No idea how though.) What specifically seems to be the problem? Is it just not displaying?
@@mdunlocked1557 okay, make sure your In/Out are plugged into the right device. 1 for the game console and 1 for the tv. The USB part goes into the computer. make sure that that video property on OBS is set to the device recording your gameplay. So, find your video source, click it, and then click properties. Look at what the devices part says. To change it to your capture card, plug in the capture card. After that's plugged in, you can change the device to the capture card. You also need a separate "source" to record the gameplay audio.Hope this helps.

Hey! No worries - by default you just need the standard capture card, an hdmi cable and that’s it pretty much! That said the other output device is probably an HDMI splitter - I do recommend it as a lot of cheaper capture cards can be laggy (button input wise) when watching the gameplay through OBS If you find it is a bit slow through OBS to recognise your controller inputs then I would consider a splitter - have explained how it works here: ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.htmlsi=1KmqlcNrNkpOzY6- But ya, definitely is fiddly to get it up and running for sure!

Thanks so much Joe! You can definitely use your laptop as a display with the capture card *but* note that there might be some input delay (Depends on the card and your laptop spec, but with most there usually a bit of delay from controller to game) I would still recommend a separate TV or screen if possible, however! Hello TeeChu! Thank you very much for this. As a first time stream from Switch this really helped a lot. I have a question, I followed all your sound tips however mine was echoing throughout the stream (the sound effects of the game sounds like im inside a cave or the bathroom). I experimented, what worked was when I turned "Desktop Audio" in advanced audio properties into "monitor only (mute output)." If I leave it in "monitor off" (like yours in the video), that's when the echoing happens. Is this good? or am I doing something wrong?
Hey! @@TeeChu Gotta say works phenominally, figured out the software steps I had to take, only thing I have issue with is running Cult of the Lamb and streaming it, seems to have some screen tearing when streaming since the game seems slightly rough to run with my old switch, but im guessing thats more of a issue of the game since everything else seems to run fine, even BOTW. Thank you so very much I was struggling with OBS and your video was the most clear and concise easiest to follow thing I have ever watched you are awesome
Thank you for the video, i saved it for later cause my wife and I plan on doing youtube as a duo since I tried before but I'm too quiet and focused on the game almost like a casual walkthrough lol
That's awesome and there's definitely no set style on RUclips or streaming for sure! Am sure people will love your content no matter how you guys present it :) Enjoy!
@@TeeChu oh we know that but she likes to game too but mever was dedicated as I was as a kid since we both were born in the 80s lol. Question for you I was looking at your other capture card videos. Does the elgato 60S or whatever have two slots for hdmi? I was looking at them and they don't say.
Thanks man so easy to follow, I had to switch to the actual HDMI 1/2 thats recording and then go back to OBS to hear my video, and mute the desktop audio to stop the echo. But great video i thought I was lost forever lol.
Thank you so much! I just got my capture card and was worried I had to buy another cable ;;;; Very informative and clear guide on how to set things up!
Had quite a time originally setting this up for switch, think i used a different method but found this video and it explains everything simplified and the audio is the trickiest part! One issue I don't think was mentioned is you need to use the proprietary usb C power adapter into the nintendo switch dock. I tried using other power sources for it (even stronger ones) and they would just give black screen (yet plugging into my usb c phone for example the capture card picked it up). Perhaps that's just my card. But thanks so much!
No problems! That's a great shout and hopefully will help people in the same boat One thing I've learnt with Nintendo is always try to go proprietary as Nintendo, well, Nintendoes! I remember the power supply being an issue or something at launch with the Switch? Seems to ring a bell!
No worries! :) Another screen is a benefit though, but not too essential :) If you do end up getting another screen or using a TV, got a little tutorial for that too :) ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html

you are the GOAT!!! I had no clue how to get it so that the in game audio from the switch also played in my headphones and this video helped me out so much! thanks so much for this video!! now i can play mario party on my pc and stream it to twitch!
Hey! Yep unfortunately there is a little input lag depending on the capture card / setup - to mitigate this you can use an HDMI splitter to view the gameplay on a second screen or TV :) ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html
Great tutorial! Recently got a video capture card so this is definitely helpful. Quick question tho. Is there a way to stream switch games from obs on Discord? I just want to stream games for my friends and I’m unsure if it’s possible
@@TeeChu one more thing, i have the hdmi in the capture card and switch however when i switch to hdmi on my screen it doesnt show up and switches back to my display port. does there have to be a second hdmi cable to plug into my monitor or have i gone wrong
@@Alg0rhythym That's correct, yep! In order for this to work (from what I think you mean) you may need to look into an HDMI splitter - have a look at this vid, hopefully it's what you need! ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html
No worries! The lag is a tricky one (it's my excuse for losing on Smash online haha) - usually I recommend if you have a second screen or TV to hand, using an HDMI splitter and watching the gameplay on that screen, which would be full speed :) ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html
Awesome video, now I can finally live my dream of playing animal crossing behind my pc! I had issues trying to set up my capture card at first, but this video made it so simple i feel silly for having any issues at all!
Great video! That helped a lot! I have a question though! Do I need a second monitor for this? Or Through the way you showed in the video I will be watching my game from obs? Thanks again! Keep up the good work!
Hey Tony! No worries :) You don't need a second monitor neccesarilly - it can be played through OBS, but maybe a little laggy button press wise depending on card, PC specs etc For this - if the capture card has an HDMI output (more expensive ones do), you can just have an HDMI going to a second screen or TV If it doesn't have an HDMI output, you can use an HDMI splitter: ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html Hope that helps!
Hey! Do you mean the sort of blurriness/blocky footage when watching it back? If so - I would look into File --> Settings --> Output and look into the Streaming tab. Bitrate should be set a bit higher than default, so something like 4000 or 4500, that should generally reduce any video issues on stream Likewise in the Settings --> Video section, possibly changing output (scaled) resolution to something lower than the standard 1920 x 1080 could help also :)
god one of the other videos i looked up almost gave me a heart attaack my ps3 went on but didnt have sound nor the screen worked so i was quite in a panic its running now and now im going to learn from your video!
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm going to buy one 😀 Question : can you use it in such a way that you record everything you play and what you want to keep you can save, for example for a fortnite montage?
Hey Victini - that's awesome! So OBS features the option to record - so you can do local recordings of your gameplay, whether it's purely the gameplay, or with voice overlay, camera etc - it really is flexible :) Instead of clicking "Start Streaming", click on "Start Recording" This saves a video file to your My Videos folder If you do record (not stream) in OBS - after you've recorded, go to File --> Remux Recordings, this will convert the OBS video into MP4s for easier editing Most of the gameplay footage on this channel was done using OBS :) If you stream instead, however, you can download the VOD/recording of your stream from Twitch or RUclips and cut it up in the way you want it Essentially the possibilities are endless! I would recommend setting it up, trying different layouts and doing local recordings before streaming Good luck!
Hey! Hmm - that's a tricky one, I'm not sure to be honest! I know PS3 has issues with capture cards in particular, I would double check other videos on that before you proceed! Modern consoles like Switch, Wii U, PS5 etc should all be okay :)
Your tutorial was a LIFE SAVER, I was beyond frustrated. Any tips on how to keep the game audio from cutting out? I can time it while watching OBS, it just DIES after 5 seconds, then comes back on its own, and then dies again. I have great internet speeds, a brand new computer... what am I missing??
Hey! Hmm that's a tricky one tbh - it sounds more so a hardware issue potentially, e.g. the capture card may not be getting enough power - I would try closing OBS, removing any other USB devices temporarily and retrying Also if the capture card is USB3 (generally they're blue), then it should be run in a USB3 port Other things to check could be the HDMI cable / some looseness somewhere in the setup! Hopefully it's not an actual issue with the card :/
@@TeeChu I don't think it's the card (thankfully) because it worked just fine on my old laptop. I got the new computer because my laptop had encoding problems while streaming/recording, but I never had this audio problem. I double checked I'm using USB3, I even swapped it ports with my webcam, checked my HDMI cable out too, and the same thing happens...

From here try experiment with some of the settings - e.g. Rate Control, CPU usage etc. It's fiddly!
I would recommend looking up other videos on "OBS Rate control" and "OBS recording settings" as I'm not 100% clued up on that myself - I use the following settings myself but can/does differ depending on setup:
- Rate Control: CRF
- CRF = 23
- Keyframe = 0
- CPU Usage Preset = superfast
- Profile = high
- Tune = none
omg i couldnt figure out how to listen to the audio myself and not just on stream! THANK YOU!
No worries Meli! Audio is such a pain in OBS!
My capture card should be coming in soon, this was really helpful to learn it all beforehand, and Im sure it will all come together in practice~ Thank you for making this video and helping anyone coming across such things. Keep up the good work~
No worries! There are a few quirks but hope you can get it up and running - any Qs, just ask!
Thank you again for the help though~
Thanks to you, I can finally play ACNH on stream 😭💕
Awesome! No prob at all - hope you enjoy these amazing new updates! What's your channel?
5 minutes.
Everything explained.
Thank you.
No worries!
The increased bitrate tip seems to have done the trick for me. Thanks a lot! :D
Amazing! Great to hear :) Don't up it too much else the Twitch ninjas may strike!
@@TeeChu I'm trying it at 4k for now, but I've never had any frame drop issues at 2.5k, so I'm banking on my internet connection being good. 😁
thanks sooooo much! you helped my other yt channel so much. Your a life changer!
No worries, good luck with the channel!
This is the best video on obs watched so many that send you around the houses and you still don't have audio but yours is spot on thanks.
No worries, glad ya got it to work!
This is absolutely incredible - it finally works!!!
Thank you!!!
I am still struggling to get spatial audio though - do you know how to get spatial audio working with this?
Hey, no worries! Not sure on the spatial audio though, unfortunately!
Maybe have a look at this video:

OMG, Thank you so much, can't wait to get started streaming and recording footage for my youtube channel and twitch channel. Iv'e been looking for a vid like this!
No prob King!
I accidentally lost the instructions that came with the capture card so thank you so much for this ! It was the audio that was eluding me haha
No worries at all! Audio is such a pain to setup!
I have see at least 50 videos of how to to this and you are the only one that I could understand tysm!!!!!
No worries! Glad you got it to work :)
thank you so much, i had to do this twice. you earned a sub. ive always disliked obs and decided to use twitch studio due to the issue of me not understanding obs for the most part, but this was the most simple setup ive had to do in a while, while looking it up and reading text made it seem like it was some giant pain the the rear to set up. very very helpful
Hey! No worries at all and thanks for the sub too - ons can be a pain to setup initially but it’s super flexible
Thank you so very much I was struggling with OBS and your video was the most clear and concise easiest to follow thing I have ever watched you are awesome
Thanks so much for the lovely comment, that's totally made my da! Happy streaming :)
Thank you SO much for this guide. I was having problems with the audio, but now it works!
No worries, glad you got it to work!
So the Elgato and most of these other expensive cards have two HDMI slots (1x input from the console) and 1x output (to TV or second screen) :)
@@TeeChu thats what i gleemed from your video i wanted to make sure before getting the elgato and being like crap need a splitter lol
Thanks man so easy to follow, I had to switch to the actual HDMI 1/2 thats recording and then go back to OBS to hear my video, and mute the desktop audio to stop the echo. But great video i thought I was lost forever lol.
No worries! Ya sound and especially echo can be such a pain!
@@TeeChu took me 2 whole days I tried other channels but they were just not helping 30 minutes wasted and no time stamps lol
I am horrible with stuff like this so I appreciate this video so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
No problem at all! It is super fiddly and tricky to setup for sure!
Thx for this quick guide man, clear and straight to the point.
No worries, glad to help and thanks for the comment!
Got the capture card today and everything worked fine, thanks for the easy tutorial 👍
Awesome! Glad to hear Sleepy!
Simple , clear and practical instructions. You made it look easy
Thank you :)
I have been trying to fix this problem with my obs for so long, thank you so much this has been great! So helpful!
Hey Kas! No worries at all :) Happy streaming/recording!
This guy is so underrated, yet so good.
Thanks so much Dave and Bambi!
Thank you so much! I just got my capture card and was worried I had to buy another cable ;;;; Very informative and clear guide on how to set things up!
No worries at all! Enjoy :)
That's a great shout and hopefully will help people in the same boat
One thing I've learnt with Nintendo is always try to go proprietary as Nintendo, well, Nintendoes!
I remember the power supply being an issue or something at launch with the Switch? Seems to ring a bell!
I thought it would be much more difficult! Thank you for sharing and making it easy to understand. :)
No problem, happy to help!
You absolute God. I couldn't figure it out forever until I saw this. Have a sub and a like. May all your sodas be ice cold and never shaken.
Thanks for the lovely comment! No worries at all :) Mmmm - cold sodas!
Thank you so much! Your video really helped me understand the whole setup and saved me money. I thought I need to buy another screen 🙂
No worries! :) Another screen is a benefit though, but not too essential :) If you do end up getting another screen or using a TV, got a little tutorial for that too :) ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html
@@TeeChu I will sure watch it tomorrow and a lot of your vids as it's 2 am Melbourne time already LOL. I did a test live stream so my daughter can go live tomorrow. Thanks so much and Kind Regards, Gigi
Tysm for helping me get started with streaming! Everything was straightforward and it really worked out for me!! Im a bit nervous but i cant wait to do my 1st ever stream this weekend 🤩
No worries at all, great to hear it and good luck with your stream debut!
@TeeChu thank you again!! 🥹
you are the GOAT!!! I had no clue how to get it so that the in game audio from the switch also played in my headphones and this video helped me out so much! thanks so much for this video!! now i can play mario party on my pc and stream it to twitch!
No worries at all! Love a bit of Mario Party - enjoy!
This video was helpful! Although I do seem to be struggling with input lag making my switch have a slight delay.
Great question! Yep - you can screenshare on a voice channel :) Either selecting OBS as the application or sharing a screen/display
Thank you so much! I couldn't figure out how to make this work! Thank youuuu
No worries! Happy streaming Sarah!
most simple and straight forward setup tutorial on the internet, thank you so very much!
No problem Micah, happy to help!
This actually really helps! Quick to the point, nothing super unnecessary. Great video!
No worries at all! Glad to help :)
is there any possible way to show chat whilst playing on my switch? also great video thank you so so much you've earned a sub
No worries! If you're logged into Twitch on OBS, your chat should show within OBS :)
thank you man, lifesaver
@@TeeChu
@@TeeChu one more thing, i have the hdmi in the capture card and switch however when i switch to hdmi on my screen it doesnt show up and switches back to my display port. does there have to be a second hdmi cable to plug into my monitor or have i gone wrong
@@Alg0rhythym That's correct, yep! In order for this to work (from what I think you mean) you may need to look into an HDMI splitter - have a look at this vid, hopefully it's what you need! ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html
@@TeeChu thank you man you're an absolute saint!
Thanks for the help! I just got my card in and now I'm able of streaming to my friends on Discord!
No worries! Glad you got it up and working!
Thanks for the amazing tutorial! Any advice to tackle input lag for demandiing games like smash?
Awesome! No worries! Glad you got it all setup - it is totally fiddly!
Thank you for this, the audio part was driving me crazy!
No worries! Right, audio is such a pain generally with streaming!
i went through so many videos and this is the only one that helped me! THANK YOU!!!
No worries! Glad you got it working :)
Great video! That helped a lot! I have a question though! Do I need a second monitor for this? Or Through the way you showed in the video I will be watching my game from obs?
Thanks again! Keep up the good work!
Hey Tony! No worries :) You don't need a second monitor neccesarilly - it can be played through OBS, but maybe a little laggy button press wise depending on card, PC specs etc
For this - if the capture card has an HDMI output (more expensive ones do), you can just have an HDMI going to a second screen or TV
If it doesn't have an HDMI output, you can use an HDMI splitter: ruclips.net/video/DpQt7TJ8Edw/видео.html
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the help, now I can finally syream my switch gameplay for my friends😊
No problem at all, enjoy the streams!
Super helpful especially with the quick OBS tutorial. Thanks
No probs Drix, glad to help!
Hey there, this worked pretty well! I have a lot of screen tearing problems though, have you got any tips on how to solve this??
Hey! Do you mean the sort of blurriness/blocky footage when watching it back?
If so - I would look into File --> Settings --> Output and look into the Streaming tab. Bitrate should be set a bit higher than default, so something like 4000 or 4500, that should generally reduce any video issues on stream
Likewise in the Settings --> Video section, possibly changing output (scaled) resolution to something lower than the standard 1920 x 1080 could help also :)
god one of the other videos i looked up almost gave me a heart attaack my ps3 went on but didnt have sound nor the screen worked so i was quite in a panic its running now and now im going to learn from your video!
Glad to hear it’s rubbing!
thank you so much! this helped and worked and the tutorial was easy to follow

Hell yes! Pokemon Legends, let's gooo! No worries - if you have any questions, let me know - and enjoy the new game!
Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm going to buy one 😀
Question : can you use it in such a way that you record everything you play and what you want to keep you can save, for example for a fortnite montage?
Hey Victini - that's awesome!
So OBS features the option to record - so you can do local recordings of your gameplay, whether it's purely the gameplay, or with voice overlay, camera etc - it really is flexible :) Instead of clicking "Start Streaming", click on "Start Recording"
This saves a video file to your My Videos folder
If you do record (not stream) in OBS - after you've recorded, go to File --> Remux Recordings, this will convert the OBS video into MP4s for easier editing
Most of the gameplay footage on this channel was done using OBS :)
If you stream instead, however, you can download the VOD/recording of your stream from Twitch or RUclips and cut it up in the way you want it
Essentially the possibilities are endless!
I would recommend setting it up, trying different layouts and doing local recordings before streaming
Good luck!
@@TeeChu thank you very much!
Thanks for the quick and easy instructions. Can this video capture card be used for PS3 consoles?
Hey! Hmm - that's a tricky one, I'm not sure to be honest! I know PS3 has issues with capture cards in particular, I would double check other videos on that before you proceed! Modern consoles like Switch, Wii U, PS5 etc should all be okay :)
Thanks so much. I could never figure out why my sound wouldnt come through to my headphones.
No worries Desiree! Audio is always a pain on OBS - happy streaming!

thanks this helped despite owning an expensive capture card
www.twitch.tv/pizzcheese
Awesome - no worries :)
Hey! Hmm that's a tricky one tbh - it sounds more so a hardware issue potentially, e.g. the capture card may not be getting enough power - I would try closing OBS, removing any other USB devices temporarily and retrying
Also if the capture card is USB3 (generally they're blue), then it should be run in a USB3 port
Other things to check could be the HDMI cable / some looseness somewhere in the setup!
