    THANKS TO DAVID FOR THE GREAT DEFENDER! / davidthecarguy
    I bought a new car: a 1997 Land Rover Defender 90. It's worth around $70,000, and it's been freshly restored to perfection -- so I figured I should take it off-roading and mess it up.

    The Range Rover sport had no problems because the diffs were locked, the way it should be done.

      Diff locks are for getting you out of the hole you dug that a viscous coupling would have stopped you getting into. I can put my bone stock P38 pretty much anywhere someone using diff locks can go.

    • @RichardShartzer
      @RichardShartzer 7 лет назад +48

      The Defender had trouble in the hill because the power was only going to the tires that were in the air. If the diff was engaged then the power would go to the higher wheel touching the rock and the wheel hanging in air. The tire with traction would pull you through until both were touching. The Sport had a computer turning the diff on and had no trouble with wheel spin.

    • @jedihair
      @jedihair 7 лет назад +41

      "Pretty much anywhere" is key here. Stubbornly backing up and rolling into it faster instead of locking the diff, like Doug did with the Defender, is how you break stuff.

    • @kojener
      @kojener 7 лет назад +15

      You're confusing axle diff locks (Defender does not have) with the Center diff lock (Which it does have, but needs to be manually engaged). Defenders are full time four wheel drive, to make it a paved road vehicle there is a differential not only on each axle but between the front and rear axles. The Defender can manually lock the center diff so that power goes evenly to both axles, otherwise, like any differential, power goes to the side with least resistance. With the CDL unlocked ALL power will be first transmitted to the axle with the least resistance and then to the wheel with the least resistance. With only one wheel off of the ground (zero resistance) , unless the CDL is locked, the vehicle is stopped. I put a air locker in my rear axle to have even more capability, and I'll put one in the front someday when I've got the dough. Until then knowing which wheels will have power in various situations will get me though, after that, winch.

    Here is my opinion. I am 75. Looking back on all the cars I have had since the summer of
    1957, my favorite car was my 1967 Volkswagen Kharmann Ghia convertible. From day one I loved that little, inexpensive car. But my point is this: If there is a car that make you feel good about yourself and feel good, spend the money if you have it. I had many cars that went from practical to exotic. If I had to spend 50 thousand dollars to have my little Ghia back in mint condition, and I had the money and desire, I would do it. GO FOR IT!

    "I could have put it in low range and engaged the diff lock" - Yes!!! That's the whole point of driving a Land Rover off-road. You were driving a 3.9 litre monster, most people drive 2.4 or 2.5 litre diesel Defenders and these work perfectly well off-road. It's not about power, it's about low-range, diff-locks and suspension articulation!!! Are you aware that the Defender can drive along the side of a 45 degree slope without rolling over? You were no where near the limits of that vehicle in your video. The RR Sport has electronic traction control, you could clearly see it operating when one of the front wheels was off the ground - that's why it effortlessly climbed the rocks. In case you haven't guessed, I'm a big Land Rover fan ;-) Thanks for the great video and keep them coming - especially more Land Rover stuff.

    • @skagerstrom
      @skagerstrom 7 лет назад +3

      No sense? Just watch Doug's video "Range Rover Catastrophe: Another CarMax Warranty Update". And that's just one car. They may have improved under the years but those are still pretty new cars and total and utter shit. Just as the Defender. It might been a good car in the 60's or something. But it's a peice of shit car today. And the pricing is a joke. When they sold the Defenders you could get a proper working Toyota LandCruiser for the same money. A car that has an interior made of real interior materials, have sound insulation and works just as well offroad :P If the Defender was priced as a Lada Niva it would have been cool. But as they were you'd be crazy to buy one :P

    • @texasBMXer
      @texasBMXer 7 лет назад +10

      In your comment you provided almost no evidence of Land Rovers being unreliable and the one piece of evidence you did provide is anecdotal. Doug's experience with one single Range Rover does say that his single Range Rover was unreliable but it is not good evidence of the brand as a whole being unreliable. After that you insulted Land Rover repeatedly but provided zero evidence of them being unreliable: "piece of shit car today" "pricing is a joke" "could get a proper working Toyota Land Cruiser for the same money" and "bad interior" all say noting about the reliability, or lack thereof, of Land Rovers. I don't agree or disagree with you on this topic. I am just saying that you inadequately supported your initial claim.

      The newer ones seems to get higher ratings. But it could be because they are newer... And I'm sure there are just as many sites saying they are terrific. But you wanted sources that support my thesis that they are shitty cars, and that what I was looking for ;)
      And yes the interior is a joke. I sat in a car with a sticker price of $45 000 (converted from Swedish crowns) and it had a 20 year old dashboard with a few newe bits tacked on. And a center storage compartment made of some kind of cardboard.

      If I had an extra 70 k and I didnt have a Range rover already for my offroading I might get one. Why not, no one comes over to talk to me when i am in my Ford F150 offroading. By My rover makes them want to look at it. When you follow a Range rover on the trail you can see why they are so awesome, that make offroading look easy. They want to talk to me , They say how many miles? I say 200k they say "no way it looks like maybe 50k". I say well I take care of it I did rebuild a well running engine at 165k but I wanted it to last the rest of my life. When i dent a fender, I fix it and repaint it. It is the most rugged,Best driving position, best suspension. only a rubicon jeep can keep up with it. A Raptor is too wide on the trail always leaving mirrors and fender bits laying on the trail when they leave. Toyotas a very reliable and 26 billion people have one. So I will keep this vehicle because it is the Vehicle that everyone wanted and couldnt afford all of the rest of SUV Makers wished they had the following the Range Rover does. It is the best 4x4xfar. one interesting fact is that it was a land rover that was the first car most of the 3rd world see when they saw their first off road vehicle. Africa, the far east. Seriously people had never seen a car and they look up and cracking through the trees was a land Rover with gobbs of gear in a country where they are dodging Yaks and tigers with no road. Keep the Raptor keep the ford toyota's My Range Rover is an icon. With a personality thank you.

    Doug, I really appreciate this video and I'm going to explain why.
    You bought this car for $70K, you knew that you were doing, you studied it, you thought through it and you came to the conslusion to buy one. Despite its flaws, despite that group of people who hate the Defender and will call you stupid for buying one, you still went ahead with it. You could have chosen anything, something more comfortable, refined, better made, newer etc but you didn't, you stuck with something unusual and quirky. This man is a true car nut and he deserves all the respect we can throw at him. He knows it's somewhat terrible and he went with it. If that's not being a true car nut, I will never know what is.
    We respect you, Doug. Good job, man.

    I've also had a Defender for a year. A 1997 Defender 90 with thee 200tdi engine. It was the most fun I ever had. Every time I got in it it put a huge smile on my face. I miss it dearly and hope to get another one soon. They are not easy to come by in Canada and very expensive as well. This car give you an incredible feeling that you can go anywhere. Jeep Wrangler is fantastic and superior in many ways. But I would still overpay and get a 20 year old Defender any time. If you've never seen or driven one, then you cannot possibly understand.

      In Canada or US is the ultimate trump SUV card. No matter what any one else has you show up in a Defender you are the coolest person there :) Thats part of it... the other is... you pretty much cannot lose money on one. Doug bought it for 70k but will probably sell it for same or more after a year. They appreciate in value rather than depreciate.

    Wow the amount of whiny opinionated people commenting on how Doug spends his money is outrageous. Sure, tell him he spent too much money, but calling him names for doing so is just ridiculous. You're all here enjoying free entertainment, and he's just bought one of the cars you all told him to buy, so you could be entertained. Does it offend you that he bought this car? Unsubscribe from his channel and don't watch his videos anymore. You think he bought this and was comparing head to head with the functionality and the practicalities of a Jeep? He's not a competitive off-roader. Nobody wants to watch him roll around in a Jeep. That's not new, and there are thousands of videos that do just that, and would do it better. Doug is about the quirky unique cars, and that's how he captivates people. Get over what he paid for it and appreciate that hes going to do something cool with it.

      If you look at most of the expensive things that failed on his Carmax Land Rover, this defender doesn't have all that crap. No tilt wheel motors or airbags or crap like that to worry about. The only big repair they could possibly share was the transfer case but I bet a defender one is a hell of a lot cheaper and less likely to fail in the first place.

    Nice work Doug! A couple of thoughts. Go ahead and put it in low range, that's why they put in a low range transfer case.
    Also, let the air out of the tires. Eleven or so pounds is about right. Get a portable air compressor for the end of the trail. You will get much better traction, spin your tires less and you will find the off road ride is much less bruising.
