3C Films i can believe Jason was switched 🤔🤔🤔 but when ?
I'm pretty confident of my theory here, as matter fact I got a theory connecting Get Out to Us but that's for later.
Theory: Jason is a tether but he was never switched, biology tells you there is a %25 chance she could give a birth to a child exactly like her. Jason feels what Pluto go through down there but like his mother the environment around him helped him grow better.
Adelaide knows this and try her best to make him fit in. She is more closer to him "Stick with me and I'll keep you safe" she says. Pluto in the other hand is the opposite he is born with a soul, and that explains why he burned himself underground cuz he is just running wild playing with fire walking like a rabbit while the other tethered kids learn how to walk and act from their counter parts above ground.
If he was switched recently since the change took place around when his gma passed, he wouldnt be able to speak. Let alone know new words

I think its great that he named the boy Jason that wears a mask the whole movie. In Friday the 13th, every one thinks the main villain is Jason, when actually the villian the whole time was Jasons Mother. Just like in Us.

I’m also thinking about the closet story. Why is this Jason so into being in closeted and closed in spaces (in a cabinet)? Is it because he’s used to ‘tunnels’ and feels more at home there?

The Jason coincidences are a deliberate misdirection. Pluto wouldn’t act so animalistic after one year of living underground.
Jason was drawing a tunnel because he has a strange connection with Pluto, his tethered counterpart. He uses the connection to kill Pluto later and the connection is displayed through out the movie (Jason’s mask vs Pluto’s mask/ Jason’s broken trick vs Pluto’s matches).
It’s possible Jason has these tendencies because of Pluto’s behavior rather than his own. Essentially they both mimick each other which is why the two have such a strong bond and do not have a death battle.
When you rewatch the movie you’ll find that Jason is one of the few constants we have throughout; he is a quirky child but he’s the one that gets the clues that his mom may not be who we think she is when he notices her animalistic traits.
I believe this is a clever ode to the shining. A classic horror film is cemented by having a unsolved mystery. Peele added just enough clues to make this theory have weight to it but ultimately it’s a deliberate misdirection.
Don Jamel he was animalistic before he went underground he was the offspring of a tether thats why the tether jason face was burned from the time he almost burned the house down red even told him try not to burn the house down when they went off to play

1. He's a kid that was being controlled into burning his own face without getting medical attention after. That would cause mental damage. A year is a long time specially if you're in a new environment.
2. His connection with pluto could be strange because theyre switched. Even though he's the one up top he still isnt used to exercising his freedom and digs tunnels subconsciously.
3. Its also possible they dont have a death battle because they have both been exposed to the real world and its softened them up. (not the case for red because she's been there for so long) also their connections might be so strong because they have a mutual experience both living in the tunnels and the real world
4. If he's the real Jason he wouldn't have been suspicious of his mother would he? Because that would be the real mom he's lived with throughout his life. But since he's seen there's 2 of them he starts to doubt wether or not thats HIS "real mom". Its possible tethers dont know theyre tethers aside from Red (original) and he never had a doubt that was his family till the others showed up.
5. Until Jordan Peele breaks it down there's too much evidence for you to just say there's no way its not a valid theory. Red Herring? Maybe. But you usually dont hide the red herring itself. Its the card you show to misdirect.
"Pluto wouldn’t act so animalistic after one year of living underground". I like your take on it, but you kind of dismiss this out of hand without offering much evidence. My counter argument would be that a young child is being taken out of his normal life and placed, presumably forcibly, into a hellish existence underground with near-zombies. I don't know about you, but that would pretty much break me psychologically and I'm not even a child. We can see that Jason has a predilection for animalism and it's conceivable that to deal with the psychological stress thrust upon him he would take on an animalistic disposition.
Overall, I really like your take, but I think the above video offered more evidence for their position. However, I'm sure people will be debating this fantastic film for much time to come.
Did anyone notice, when Jason tricked Pluto and locked him in the closet and he began to scream/cry, Adelaide, who is really red says “That one is yours”.

I think the boy realizes that his actual mom was the fake one and keeps his guard up. It reflects what the audience feels. As us the audience and Jason come to realize the twist all along.

Notice how in the car Jason could not snap correctly and in rhythm. Compare that to Pluto, who right before his death, snaps his fingers perfectly and in rhythm. I think he was trying to show Adelaide that he was the real Jason

Another clue that Jason was switched is that he would not eat the food that his sister and father were eating. And this was apparently a perpetual thing. The mom said “I want you to eat this time”. The mom kept trying to get him to eat it but he didn’t want too. But if you notice-the mother wasn’t eating that food either. She was noticeably only eating strawberries.
Jason is still Adelaide's child so that's not that weird at all

I have counter arguments, I'm trying to decide which theorie I believe more.
First, how did the Shadow boy learn perfect english while having only his mother to talk to, BUT WAIT she didn't talk. That is why she couldn't speak, nobody could talk to her for 30 years ( it was in the script according to Lupita that at the moment she hadn't spoken in a long time). If the 10 year old boy had been taught by her, she would have less difficulty speaking, and the shadow girl would have been taught to speak too, no? On the other side, why would Adelaide (Shadow mom) be against Pluto dying if he wasn't her child? (Adelainde would have given birth to Jason, never met Pluto and still would not want him to die? Or did she give birth to pluto, then he switched but she still got super attatched to Jason too?)

@@brennakinney6568 The only thing that I can think of is that Pluto was the only one who didn't have scissors and Red encouraged them to play. He didn't cry out when she grabbed him towards the end. Maybe she told him what it was like and he wanted to see the upper world himself. Just guessing though. I'm going to watch it again to see if I notice anything else.

I'm autistic and I have to say although I don't think this was Jordans intention the teathered in a lot of ways felt similar to autistic people, obviously the murder stuff less so but there was a spooky resemblance in some aspects and I thought it was an interesting take.

Jason is genetically more like his Mother who was a tether all along. Period. He was never switched.

Very true, but you know how you get traits from mom side and dad side. For example, heart disease runs in father side but not mom side. There is a 50%chance the child will have heart disease. The daughter didn't inherit that trait but the son did... Tethers mimic what their human is doing above, for Jason it was opposite. Jason like the mask because Pluto had to wear a mask because of his burns underground. Jason wants a dog, Pluto acted like a dog. They mimic each other. Jason looked at his mom at the end because he was there when Red revealed the truth and moms behavior as she killed Red. Jordan Peele is amazing.

The fact that they gave that moment in the end in the car could back this theory. Like him and his mom knew the truth about each other, Or it could’ve been that Jason heard the whole conversation during the fight between his mother and the real Adelaide and he found out what his mother had done.
He’s the only person who has seen his mother through her worst moments so I think it’s just him realising his mother’s a teather

That could be suspicion but he could also just be wary of her since she is not actually his real mom. After that look in the ambulance, he goes on to pull that mask back down on his face as to affirm that he realizes he is going to have to keep up the charade to survive like she has done so far...IDK...but I do LOVE that this is one of those theories that is not easily proved/debunked...I believe it is by Peele's design....GENIUS!

When Pluto walked into the fire, Adalaide screamed "no". That was the only "tethered" she showed any emotion for when he died. Also, Red never hurt Jason. Nothing Jordan Peele does is by accident. The man is a genius.

By the same logic, the daughter Zora was switched. That explains her rabbit t-shirt (she used to live underground with rabbits), it explains why Adelaide was sympathetic when Umbrae was dying in the tree (she knew Umbrae was her real daughter), explains why Umbrae was a better runner than Zora (the clones imitate the humans in an INFERIOR manner so the clone Zora was slower than Umbrae), and explains why she believed the government was controlling people with fluoride (she grew up in a underground experiment designed to control people).
Neither Jason nor Zora was switched. Their underground clones were half human so their thoughts and behaviors influenced their above-ground counterparts slightly.

Those twins went from practicing cartwheels on the beach to being full on Olympic gymnasts as Tethereds, so I'm not sure that part of your argument is really true.
I disagree, the clones imitate the humans which is why they're mannerisms are not inferior. Remember the clones have no souls, they're whole life is dedicated to mindlessly doing what they're counterparts do. Unlike the actual humans they don't have the luxury of pushing their talents to side. All of the humans are blinded by some type of vanity whereas the clones are not because they have nothing, which may explain why they are so much better at their human counterparts talents.

This is just my theory but there were times when it seemed Adelaide was talking to the tethered but you couldn’t hear her. Like when she had her hand out to Pluto but told everyone to stay in the car or when Red was whistling while she was killing her. I think she was talking to them in the tethered clicking language and when Jason was in the locker he heard her grunts and speaking the language and that’s how he realized Adelaide was a tethered.
Notice that Addy was distraught by Pluto's death (she reached out and said no) and Jason was traumatized by Red's death. Also, Jason was holding one of the rabbits from the underworld in the car at the end. Does this mean he still felt connected to where he truly came from?

Fake Adelaide was distraught when Pluto went into the fire because she does not know he is the real one, she thinks that's the tethered version. Both Fake Adelaide and Fake Jason don't reveal their true identity to anyone, not even each other. That's why Fake Jason 'figures it out' at the end.
Real Adelaide kidnaps fake Jason but does not kill him because you have to remember, as she was forced to live underground she gave birth to the tethered version, so she has some maternal affection for him. Fake Adelaide, whilst living above ground gave birth to a human version of Jason.
Don't forget the tethered are clones of one another but sharing one soul.

Been scrolling through these comments and I can’t believe everyone missed out the big clue at the end that proves this theory. “Jason was holding a rabbit at the end” we know rabbits were eaten for food by the tethered and Jason didn’t want the food that his sister and father were eating. Also why would any normal child pick up something to keep from a creepy place like that unless it was something they were familiar with.

The only thing that makes me think Jason wasn't switched is that no one above ground ever mentioned his face being burnt prior to the year previous when he "switched." If the real Jason switched a year previous, he must have been burnt during that year. Possible, but never addressed. Perhaps he was doing his trick and burnt his face when he switched?
My take on the ending: The boy isnt a tether. At the end he feels no hatred emotions towards the mother. This is the only mother he has ever known. So he feels its best to continue life with his mouth shut. "Rather if shes good or evil, she is still my mother" , thoughts of the little boy as he puts back on the mask at the end.

Well the tethered do recreate events that have happened before. Just because he put the toy car in the doorway doesn't mean he remembers the closet closes one way, he just knows that he's afraid of the door closing for some reason and puts something in it to hold it. Kind of like why he's constantly flicking the hand lighter. He doesn't know what it does or why it's not working and refers to it as a magic trick, he just knows that's what he does. Which btw, what kind of "magic trick" do you think he could possibly be recreating with that lighter lol?

I think you're right about the boy being replaced as they give us many clues hinting at it especially when they get back from the beach and the mom speaks to him about him running off to the restroom, he says; "You thought I died" and her response was that she was afraid he'd be taken then she says; "STICK WITH ME, I'LL KEEP YOU SAFE". I immediately thought that her reply and advice was a little weird 🤔
Before that though, the mom is teaching him how to go with the rhythm of the song and does it off beat, he then learns but also does it off beat yet she seems proud.
Also, when they're in the closet together, Pluto seems frustrated as Jason doesn't know how to work the lighter. It seems as if the supposed tether has a little more knowledge about our world and the mechanics of simple things while Jason still hasn't mastered lighting a lighter though he's been at it for a while.

Not necessarily. He could’ve thought original Ade was a tethered but just “special.” That’s how all the other tethereds saw her. It was not until he saw both the Ades fighting that he realized who the real tethered was. His final reactions to her is not one of fear but of understanding.
I'm not sure if I subscribe to this theory, but assuming that it is true, then Jason's horrified reaction to Adelaide in that moment wouldn't be because he realizes she's a tethered, but because he just watched her kill his real mom. Furthermore, her pushing back her hair and saying, "Look, it's me, it's me" wouldn't help AT ALL, since that's not what he's upset about.

To me Jason/Pluto switched last summer when he got locked in the closet and had a fire accident with his magic trick. He almost burned the house but most importantly burned himself and then got exchanged with his clumsy tether which can’t reproduce a magic trick he never actually did.
By the end both Jason and Adélaïde are tethers, even though he was raised by the other Adelaide he knows and understand her story since they have the same (grew up in the tunnels and took over their real human’s life) that s why he choses not to say anything and puts his mask back on. Also explains their weird relationship throughout the movie and privileged connection

So if a human is eating a burger up above then Tethered is down below doing the same thing even tho there is no burger they at the rabbits. So the only way a person would have the idea to escape is if the human would wonder into an entrance which would lead a Tethered to the same spot, this is how the switches occur. When the Tethered saw Red could dance they knew she was different than everyone and began to be their leader. This is how she lead the pack out of the dungeons.

Peele only put certain scenes in the film to confuse the viewer as nothing was in there by accident.
Zora mentions the government putting flouride in the water to control our minds and guess who only drinks water throughout the movie, Adelaide!
At the family table they all eat fast food and have soft drinks all except Red who only has strawberries and a glass of water in front of her.
Then Josh proceeds to ask the adults if they wanted any alcohol on the beach and surprise surprise Adelaide is the only one to say 'All good water'
Adelaide is also a capital city in the land "down under", Australia!

Jasons character is a great diversion and is one of Peele's magic tricks to throw people off the real plot twist.
He doesn't wander off like Adelaide he's actually going to the toilet and just because some stuck up spoilt twins say he's weird doesn't mean he's been switched.

They also never mention PTSD like the doctor did to Adelaides parents perhaps coz he was probably very close with his grandma and he's a little depressed and as stated 'has a hard time dealing with it'.
Seems very normal.
His "apparent" change in behavior could also be related to his tethered counterpart as they draw closer to the beach.
Red is very close with Pluto but does she not say what the people aboveground do the shadow mimic just not in those words.
It's directly mirroring Adelaide's close relationship with her baby boy, Jason.
When Jason creates the spark above, Pluto below strikes the match and in theory causing a fire and burning his face.
What the above ground or "privileged" took for granted the tethered did not and honed their skills, excelling those of their counterparts.
For eg. Zora giving up on track n' field while Umbrae as we see gives her a head start when giving chase, confident she has the upper hand.
Jasons failed attempts or lack of interest in striking the lighter while Pluto continues on in turn becoming a pyromaniac having a love for fire.
Remember Jason leaves the finger lighter at the vacation house it's not like he continues to attempt the trick or has it with him at all times plus he has his other little tricks it's not like he mastered this one.
As Jason set a trap for Pluto in the closet it was Pluto's turn to set a trap at the beach.
The snapping of the fingers in this scene does not imply Pluto having rhythm he is merely mimicking Jason's striking of the lighter.
In the closet it is Jason who was the one striking the lighter until it sparked, startling Pluto enough to make an exit.
It was Pluto's turn now and we see him snapping his fingers but Jason finally understood this moment realizing it was a trap as it was a trap he set for Pluto in that closet.
One of his many tricks.
Obviously Pluto does not get to complete his magic trick but he wanted to get back at Jason for outsmarting him earlier on.
The snapping or clicking of Pluto was just a diversion like most magic tricks.
But Jason had an epiphany and acted accordingly narrowly escaping being trapped in the car (much like the closet) and being burned alive along with it's other occupants.
Hence yelling out 'it's a trap'
Pluto tried to pull the same trick on Jason as Jason did on him in the closet but Jason acted swiftly and became fully aware of that scenes significance.
I can go further that this 'proposed switch' never happened but the list goes on.
These 2 were at it just like Freddy and Jason.
Peele pays homage to MJ, Freddy Krueger (Pluto), Friday the 13th (Jason) and the list goes on and on in this movie.
Who do we see defeat Freddy in the movie Freddy vs Jason?
Who was the real villain in Friday the 13th, Jason's mom.
Who is Kruegers mom? A nun that worked at an Asylum and was raped by crazy inmates only to give birth to the one we know as the infamous Freddy Krueger.

Another reason why I didn't fully believe that Jason and Pluto were switched ... Jason controlled Pluto by walking backwards. Not the other way around ... and I was wondering why he was the only one who did that, yet none of the others controlled their tethers in the same way...

He remembered that moment in the closet where Pluto could mimic his movements and quickly acted on it.
Now very much like that closet scene he took advantage of that small window and everyone in the car escaped the trap.
This scene reflected the closet scene where Jason repeatedly strikes his lighter to where it finally sparks although this time round it is Pluto who is clicking imitating Jasons striking.
Significance? Upon seeing Jasons trick it is Pluto's turn to perform his own also remembering their prior encounter it is his turn to set the trap. It's Jason's striking that he's mimicking not his clicking and just like the closet scene we hear the lighter click quite a few times before it sparks.
By this time everything has come full circle for Jason and he proceeds to control Pluto to the point where he lures him into the very thing he loves, fire 🔥
It was never about Pluto clicking on beat as I think that was just a throw off for the audience as it was simply Pluto copying above ground Jason everytime he struck the lighter.
We only see Jason try to click once in the beginning car scene along with his mom but he reminds everyone about his magic trick that he forgot to do but has obviously attempted it many many times.
There was no switch or evidence of a switch at least from my perspective ✌️

Addy went after her son Jason when Red abducted him as she knew she'd follow her down there and it never would've happened if that were Pluto LoL
Jason may come across distant but he is very perceptive and as stated he acted quickly escaping the trap Pluto had set for them and not the other way round.

It's why the family is also very protective of him as he's the youngest and can't really comprehend her passing but being a hybrid he looks to have inherited more of his mom's genes where Zora inherited more of her dads.
It's because of his awkward behaviour the audience kind of questions his actions but perhaps these changes can be be attributed when he and Pluto are in close proximity of reach other.
Red wanted to exact revenge on Addy and wanted her stuck in the same spot she was all those years with no one to help.
Redemption if you will.
Sad thing is the real Addy was choked and shackled as a little girl then choked out for good on the very same bed frame.
Like stated Jason was a clever diversion in this movie from the real twist.

This actually makes a lot of sense, but there's one thing that still makes me question this theory: if they were switched, where and how did they switch? The movie made it pretty clear that they came from that specific place in the Boardwalk and/or the sewers, and the family never went to the boardwalk together until after the Grandmother died so how would pluto not only get Jason to switch but take his place too? Also, why would pluto stare at his mother in knowing fear/disgust at the end of the movie if he had done the same thing essentially?

I Jason is upset that his mother killed his real mom. There was a fire and I think that Pluto and Jason was trapped in the closet and the burnt child was left.
I think he would stare in fear and disgust because the mum he always knew for the majority of his life was red and so seeing the duplicate kill her still would have been dreadful for him

Remember earlier in the movie Jason drew a picture of someone watching him watching the homeless guy instead of just drawing the homeless guy alone. Why would you draw your own self from behind watching another person??? Doesn’t make sense, it’s almost as if somebody was spying on the boy (THE REAL JASON) staring at the man on the beach. Which that would knock out the theory of Jason being switched a year before the events took place meaning he got switched THAT VERY SAME DAY on the beach when he saw that homeless man after he was missing for awhile. Also if you guys remember at the beginning of the movie when Adelaide & her parents was in therapy, the mom said she just wanted her daughter back. The therapist recommended given her an outlet to share her story via dance, “DRAWING” or any other art form. Adelaide told her story through dance but Jason on the other hand could have used the “DRAWING” to tell his story!! Remember the mom asked Jason who is that in the drawing he drew & his answer was “I don’t know”. Of course he wouldn’t have known cz he was a tethered. At the beginning of the movie he talked the most but ever since that beach scene he barely talked the rest of the movie I thought that was weird when I first watched it but after watching it a 2nd time it all makes sense!!! 🤔 But That’s my theory, Jason was switched on the beach not the year before but idk it’s just a theory I could be wrong 🤷🏾♂️

It’s possible the experience was so traumatic he just couldn’t deal with it and embraced something he loved, animals, as a form of escapism.
Well he was growling because his mouth is burned shut. But notice how perfect he was walking in front of the fire. He can do both if he wants.
when the mom killed one of the tethered she began acting different (smiling and making little noises) but when the son hit the tethered neighbor in the back of the head with that statue thing he didnt behave that way AND at end he was staring at his mom like he noticed there was something different about her and he was kinda scared which wouldnt make sense if he was also a tethered who was just switched out as little as a year before
When the mom went back in the house to get the keys and she ended up having to kill that twin or the twin's mom (I couldn't tell who it was) she was making the noises of the tethered and Jason heard her when he went back in the house too. Jason already knew his mom was "off". Lol
