Earlier this year, I thought I'd have a go at learning how to use 3D animation software, really just so I could do some simple effects in my films... but I got a little bit carried away.
The ThunderCats have been a love of mine since I can remember and the intro is something I thought would be a fun challenge to recreate and keep my interest while I was learning the software.
I'm now developing a ThunderCats short film, making use of some of the years of notes I've kept for a feature trilogy. I'm currently recruiting 3D artists to help me, so check out my channel for updates on that.
All 3D animation was done in Blender, an awesome (and completely free) animation software. Shoutout to those behind the MB-Labs plugin for Blender which I used to create the base models for Lion-o, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, WilyKit and WilyKat. Lightning and smoke effects were done in Adobe After Effects. Edited in Premiere Pro. Thanks also to the many RUclipsrs who upload Blender tutorials - I must have watched hundreds of them. Ian Hubert's lazy tutorials are particularly awesome and inspiring.

It will never cease to amaze me what kind of insane shit people are able to create just by sheer love and dedication to whatever they are fans of. This is not something a big studio or even game publisher did on a huge budged, it's done by a guy who loves his craft! I'm utterly amazed.
Man, im from South East Asia - Malaysia. Born in 75, and boy let me tell ya.. 80's cartoons like thundercats, transformers, starcom, gi joe were the best things in my childhood! Never miss em.. Platinum!

Dude. This is not only incredible but also just shows how legendary the editing and choices made in the 80s intro were. Thundercats was genius. And so is this.

Agreed. To this day, I still think of the original as the best animated intro ever. The cuts, angles and composition of those "shots" were fantastic. Should be awards given.

I so wish this technology existed when this and other shows were on the air. Original transformers and voltron are so much better than the modern ones came out. This was my childhood. I even remember when lion voltron and vehicle voltron met up

Man..i love thundercats opening. Whenever i hear it, my skin feels like ants are crawling all over me. I also love gavan and neon genesis. These 3 openings are really the most kickass since the invention of tv. These three are the goat. And what a fantastic job youve done for this recreation. Far cooler then the recent strawberry thunder kittens i seen but cant unseen on tv

How long did it take?
4 months. I started by modelling the Sword of Omens in April, progressed to the Thundertank, then the Cats' Lair, then the characters, and before I knew it, I was doing the whole thing.
It's too bright/dark!
Yeah... that was actually a deliberate choice on my part to give it a more stylised look (and hide some of the dodgy CGI), but I agree I might have pushed it a little bit too far. Doh.
Do one for Silverhawks/M.A.S.K./Transformers!

I'm not crying, you are. I can't describe how cool this is to see, Thundercats helped me get through a very rough childhood, and I'll never forget it!
Just like mom’s home cooked food, love was definitely a key ingredient into making this great piece of work. Truly amazing stuff, and truly a great homage to one of 80’s gems.
I couldn't believe what I just saw. Who ever did this hands down, shit was dope.
So while a dedicated and fan turns this out for free, the intellectual property holder funds and gives us Thundercats: Roar.

Thudercats roar is a disgrace to the OG creators and fan base. And also degrading the kids imagination and artistic taste. Thundercats 2011 animation was a step in the right direction but well we all know what happened to that.

Such a nice rendition of the original. I simply cant help thinking though that although Mummra is the bad guy, he is actually the only character that really comes from Earth, while the Thudercats are the real alien invaders.

Mumra's scream is absolutely essential. Any future Thundercats revival or movies without the scream will fail miserably!

I loved this as a kid and it still holds up! The art style really drew me in. So exciting and action packed.

I LOVE THIS. As an animator and filmmaker myself I think this is one of the best 2D to 3D remake I've ever seen. I like how you gave the Thundercats title at the end a sorta yellowish tint to give it an old film-ish feel. Feel the magic, hear the roar man!!

Thundercats had an amazing quality. Each picture was drawn in a mannner that it used the positions and dimensions of the character as good as they could. The music was also excellent. One of my favorite cartoons of the 80s.
If this existed when I was a kid in the 80's my mind would have been blown into another galaxy!

Pretty solid work as a concept piece. The only things I would tweak would be the over exposure in certain scenes and add more detail and texture in the faces -- getting a bit of that uncanny valley look. But very impressive for someone who just started 3d animation this year. Give this man a real budget and more time to polish this and we will have something truly amazing.
The musical score of Thundercats 80's was magic. Really set the tone of the series.

I’m 17 now and I’m so glad my dad got me to watch it with him when I was younger. It’s rare to see modern cartoons that have that much heart put into the opening. I might be a modern teen but I live for older cartoons like Thundercats.

Thanks! I really can't give enough credit to the RUclips community for sharing Blender tutorials - pretty much whatever you want to create on Blender, there's a tutorial to help you out.
Every single shot presented unique challenges, but making something you're passionate about is an excellent way to learn. I wouldn't have picked it up so quickly if I'd spent 6 months doing nothing but tutorials. Because I was excited for what I was working on, I would work that much harder and not give up so easily - which is very tempting to do when you can't figure out how to make cloth act the way you want it to!

Like most stuff online it's because it's made by fans, for fans. Not having to go through a network who think they know what the public want but don't have a feckin' clue! Until fans are allowed to make reboots they'll all fail miserably.

Great Job. Looks amazing still can't believe a studio never made this into a movie. So much in this series to work with. The sword of omens is awesome and Mummra alone is one of the best villans of all time.
