- Being honest in your purchasing decisions is very important to me. Any gear that doesn't fully makes me happy, needs to go. I hope this video helps anybody who is struggling with the decision to get into the Leica Q Line.

I don't think Fan Boys will rant here. I think this video is all about your personal preference on Camera handling and I don't see anything you mentioned about Leica Q3 image quality or colors that everyone craves about and die for it. So I think its a good review and its more of convincing yourself on your own findings and feelings!

M11P is also a toy...without AF and video. They all have electronics and sensor inside a metal casing. @@SavedbybGrace
Hard to understand why you purchased it in the first place.
Because I thought I would use it much much more than I ended up doing. Plus, I am so in love with the Leica M6 now, that I took the M6 more often than the Q3. I have to admit that I have had a lot of photography gear where I thought that I needed it, because it made sense on paper, but daily life showed me something different. And I wanted it to replace the Fuji X100V as I wanted it to be better in AF especially. But I was wrong, doesn't mean that the camera is bad, on the contrary, it is a great camera, but it is just not for me. And I guess that this is my biggest issue with all Leica cameras that offer Autofocus, I am used to the Canon and Sony People and Eye Tracking, and neither the Q3 nor the SL2S are close to that standard.

Yes, because shooting film and on a range finder, it is much slower and very different to autofocus in digital. When I get a camera with a great lens and sensor for that price point, I request that it has much much better AF than the Q3 has.

Love the Q design and philosophy, but it is exactly why I've not purchased one. Everything you mentioned would be an issue to me as well. Okay maybe not the AF if I used it as a MF only camera. The 28mm (or more like26mm) is just too wide for my style, and the lack of a joystick would be a real pain. How do others use it? focus and re-compose? I'm sticking to my X-Pro2 for now. Love everything about it, but wish it had a FF sensor.
Not to be disrespectful, but almost all of your reasons existed before purchase and you still chose to buy it. why?
I am well aware of this, I think it came down to how much I used it over the course of the 8 month and on the other side the 6K€ that it cost. It is not so much the 7 reasons alone, but paired with the price tag. I have been using so many different cameras for so long, and as you evolve as a photographer, you think differently about the gear that you are using. And 8month can make a huge difference.

After testing the Leica Q2 and Q2 monochrome you thought the Q3 would be the perfect camera to document your life etc (so not a 'professional' camera then). You then appear to criticise the Q3 for so many things that are the same as on the Q2. Did you think that despite many of the things on the Q3 being exactly the same as on the Q2 that somehow they might be 'different?'...........I'm confused.
Hey Ian, I understand the confusion, here is my explanation, that hopefully makes sense. 1) It is a different idea of testing a camera for a week and a longer term review how often I used it during regular life. 2) The bigger difference for me is the money aspect - If the Q3 was half the price, I would suggest, that I would not feel so bad of not using it as often as I wanted it to. I wanna emphasise again, that I am a photographer, that mostly carries his Canon R5 daily as I need it for my job, So I would always gravitate then towards my R5 rather than the Q3 as I have such muscle memory on the camera and have my options of different lenses. I hope this makes sense. And again, the Q3 is an amazing camera. And I can see myself getting a Q or Q2 in the future but at a much lesser price.
A Q2 for half the price, a daily camera that always fits your outfit perfectly "" and documents life every day/travel/food. A lifestyle camera that should look very good and be well made, but shouldn't necessarily cost 6k and you feel guilty about not using it.
That's pretty much how I imagine it.

This video is useless. Q2 is the same as Q3. If Q2 is not for you then so is the Q3. This is just another nonsense video to gain viewers.
I agree with your points. Although your comment about x100v not allowing shutter speed selection with single dial is not correct. When you set the dial to T the shutter is completely controlled by the front or back dials which is configurable. You can also lock the exposure comp dial with a setting as well .
That is amazing man, and I apologise that I didn't know that about the X100V - so maybe when the X100VI is out, I get it again.

Patrick, I bought a new M11 in silver, a Visioflex Mk 2, a Summilux 50mm F1.4 about 18 months ago ... I just have not used them (and I mean, I have not used them at all!!!) ... I will take a hit but I am thinking of trading them in for the Leica Q3 ... what do you think?
As a Leica Q3 owner, I agree with you regarding most of your points. “Too wide” is my biggest issue and that’s why I will be selling it.

Great video. I'm happy with my Q3 so far. I'll use it for travel in a weeks time and see how I like it. I'm a casual photographer and this camera probably fits my lifestyle. I agree it's bulky (than my Fuji X100S) but I'm really happy with the image quality -- it's a huge upgrade for me. I didn't go with the latest Fuji X100 because I wanted to try a different brand.
I agree. I’m a casual photographer myself who was using mostly my Nikon D5, which I still use. For an all time carry, I love the Q3. The Fuji, to me. Is nothing more than a toy after checking it out.
So what do you use instead, that isn't as big, that has a 35mm lens, and such a great image quality? Cause I'm looking for something similar too, and I can't. Everything is big and not easy to walk around with.
Hi Sarah, right now I am using a Fuji x100v - I am waiting for the x100vi - and one camera that is really great, is the Canon G7x mark iii, my wife uses it as a point and shot, but doesn't have the same image style as the Fuji.
You seem a better candidate for the Sony a7cr on that regard.
You would be the first person since the introduction of the Leica Q Typ 116 who has stated they would prefer a less wide open lens and sacrifice of the macro feature.
About the wide open, at least 3 people here in the comment section mentioned it was too wide.
I use A7R5 when I want more versatility and snappier performance… the Leica Q3 when I feeling lazy and just want to do some street photography for the day

Except Sony Colors! I sold my A7CR because I didn't like Sony JPG colors out of the camera!
That’s exactly what I have as well. 24-70 GM II and Q3 for smaller carry, low light instead of bringing my 35 1.4 GM. Also have a M11P with 35 Lux for fair weather, stroll through the park kinda days
Therefore I am waiting on the Nikon Z7 mark 3, with its beautiful colors. If I can afford it I will keep my new Fujifilm x100VI with it. Just because I don’t have Leica Q3 money, but if the latter would drop to €4000,- I would really have to scratch my head and think deeply.
I’m very happy with my Q3, but the fact that it is not very easy to handle regarding changing the shutter speed, ISO, or aperture is pretty frustrating! But I love the image quality. It became my daily driver for urban and portrait photography. And for my other photography I use my Sony a1
One correction: When you crop 28mm f/1.7 to 35mm FOV, the DOF/bokeh/everything is exactly the same as if it was shot with 35mm f/1.7. Of course 35mm lenses sometimes have simpler/different optical formulas than 28mm, but that'd just make the bokeh look different, and have different aberrations, but it won't increase/change DOF. So if you were cropping Leica Q images to 35mm lens FOV equivalent, or if the camera offers that cropping built-in, the results are truly equal to a camera with 35mm f/1.7. Only naturally the pixel count is smaller, but not much - in many cases and for selected photos it can be upscaled back using the recent AI upscaling algorithms.
Thanks so much for that explanation. Didn‘t know, but makes sense. I think i was referring to the visual impact it has, especially when cropping in to 50mm and the natural vignetting I love so much on the leica lenses.
Not true. Since it's a 0.25x crop, a 28mm f/1.7 (or Leica's 26mm f/1.7 x 1.35x crop) to a 35mm will result in a similar DOF of f/2.1 ~ f/2.3. So DOF does look different compared to a 35mm f/1.7. The FOV however, is 100% the same. Even cropping a 16mm down to 35mm will look 100% the same in terms of FOV if your camera is in the same spot.
@@professionalpotato4764 I know right. So weird that he doesn't think that things like DOF will change with a crop. So by that logic I can crop to 135mm and get the same DOF as a 135 f1.7? LOL
Taking out the macro function seems like a weird request. Wide angle lenses like the 28mm are great for close-ups and create a certain look that's very different from a regular tele lens. Maybe you should look at a M10 + Voigtlander 28mm f/2.8 instead.
I do agree, the 26mm lens isn't great. Fuji 18mm f/1.4 or Viltrox 28mm f/1.8 ( a $300-ish lens) outperforms the Leica Q summilux lens in terms of distortion/corner edge performance.
I know you like high resolution… but you might want to try out the Canon R8. I’m really enjoying the small and light body with the 28 f2.8 and 35 f1.8… with the 28 it’s lighter than the Q3 I think - and of course it has better focussing speed even than the R5.
not sure the q2 or q3 is considered a professional camera as your referring. It's like buying a Rolex and selling it cause it doesn't tell you how many calories you burned for the day.
I think it is. It has full frame, a great lens, a 60mp sensor and a great dynamic range, so yeah, a professional camera. And a rolex is a professional watch if you wanna ask a diver :)
well maybe your definition of a professional is different then mine, I'm a wedding photographer that shoots 40 major weddings a year along side with 80 elopements a year, I would never I repeat never use a q3 with 1 card slot and tons of freezing issues as a main camera.That would be incredibly unprofessional on my part. Well all I can say is that if its not right for you its not right for you. Whether it was a Leica, Sony, whatever, not everyone is able to accept everything. I come from a Sony, Canon working background. I agree that the camera doesn't support quick easy settings adjustment on the fly, hell the amount of news, doco and commercial work I did with my Canon 1DX, it was literally welded to my hand and I could use it in the dark and knew exactly what I wanted dialled in. As far as wide. Before buying the Q3, I conducted an audit on my personal work and pretty much worked out 89% of my private photography is wide between 24 and 35mm. I hardly used focal lengths of 50 and above. Therefore the 28mm was a nice sweet spot for me with the ability to get a 30mp 35mm frame too. I have never ever been a flippy screen person with any camera but hey the Q3 was $500 more than the Q2 and I jumped on it. I must admit the flippy screen has been handy on two occasions but that it. You along with many owners know the Q3 has superb image quality. It just wasn't for you and that's not a problem. Me, I absolutely love the camera as it ticks all my boxes. My only wish from Leica would have been perhaps some internal storage but hey thats not much to worry about. I hope you find the camera that suits your taste and requirements. Cheers :) Oh, forgot to mention. I purchased the camera as a personal camera, I wanted a simple and clean interface, small unit and great image quality. I will never ever use it for work as I made a commitment to use it only for personal photography.
I agree. If the Q system fits your style then it is a great piece of kit but if it doesn't, a number of compromises need to be made in order to enjoy the experience.
Great video. The macro requests seems odd tho. Macros always come in handy
The x100v can control shutter speed with one dial? You can set F stop, ISO, and C on the front command and shutter on the rear … did I misunderstand what you meant? Apologies if so …

There should be a back assigned focus button because it is better than the shutter one and I don’t like to disturb the focus while wanting to take the photo

Ciao Patrick. It seems you got not w typical needs. Most off the points don't apply to me, and many points you could have checked in advance cause they are the same on q2. Agree with auto focus, should be better at Sony and Canon level.
It clearly doesn’t match your style which is changing your settings v frequently. And you dislike that lens?!
I think the lens itself is great, sharpness is so good, that I dialled it down most of the time. But mostly, the 28mm (which I love on the M6 weirdly) is just not the way I like my photos to look.
I understand your reasoning, sounds like you are looking for a tool more than a lifestyle camera, which is valid if making life simpler is the ultimate goal. I think there is an experience factor to be considered, which is one of the draws many people enjoy the Leica or other cameras for. It makes you treat photography differently, and make different photos. Just my two cents for consideration.
Hey Stevie, 100% agree. it is a different type of photography for sure. And even if you sometimes think you know how you will incorporate it in your life, reality hits you and you see it differently. And I love my M6 for the slow and different type of photography already.
I have tried using the M for interior shoots multiple times over the years. it just won't cut it, and I understand the right tool for the right job totally for the professional context - you want to deliver the best images with the least amount of challenges.@@patresinger
Kudos to you for stating that the Q3 was not for you. I am Leica user, but I often think why Leica did not give a choice of a Q3 with either 35 mm or 50 mm lenses? People could then choose the focal length of their choice or even buy two bodies.

The main problem is that the housing would have changed significantly due to the higher focal length with a permanently installed lens. 35mm or 50 mm would have been possible with f2.8 but not with f1.7 in this design. Instead of changing the lens, you simply gave the camera more megapixels, which means you can get usable (but not real) 35mm or 50mm shots through a crop.

I shoot a Canon R5 daily but absolutely love using my Q2. I disliked it initially but after a couple of months I loved it.
Weird. Why did you buy a 28mm if you prefer 35mm, especially after you did extensive testing with the Q2?
I agree with some of your points, some are subjective such as button placement, but speaking about joystick actually you can touch the screen, or if you like to use EVF and change focus point there’s a function where you can move the focus point using your thumb while looking at the EVF, even if the screen goes off when using EVF, it’ll turn the screen like a Mac Track Pad, isn’t this faster than a Joystick? Just wonder. For focal length compression, the cropping won’t affect the compression, but bokeh yes, a 35mm will have shallower DOF. Not sure if you can tell a Q3 file cropped into 35mm, for me I can’t thou. But side by side comparing with my Summilux 35/1.4 both wide open you can tell the bokeh is different and if you stand at the same distance as you would with a 35mm and crop, background compression is same.
Love and hate the Leica Q in equal measure ! Mainly because the focal length really is too wide. I thought I could get on with a fixed 28mm focal length but nine times out of ten its just really f*****g annoying
I fully feel you Sebastian, it is a love/hate relationship. I wanted it so bad to fit to my life, but it just doesn't, especially at this price.
I have been a conflict photographer for over forty years and I still dont understand how I got sucked into this beautifully annoying camera 🙂 ! It serves me no real purpose at all ! If only they had stuffed a 35mm on the thing and two card slots then we would be talking sense ! It just goes to show the older you get you dont necessarily get any wiser 🙂@@patresinger

I purchased the Q3 at launch… and returned within a week. The build quality is not on the same level as my M-series cameras. Also, the size feels larger than my M-series cameras, as I can swap to smaller lenses when I want a smaller profile. I replaced it with a Ricoh GRIII. That’s camera has cult status for a reason. Super small, huge sensor relative to the footprint. Built in ND, IBIS… and a macro mode. Need I say more?

Griii is sick, but the image quality is nothing like the Q3, not close. If you needed a truly pocketable camera with great image quality, yes, the Ricoh is fantastic

As a Q2/Q3 owner I agree with you only on the AF performance where tracking and eye recognition should be improved. I also own an A7R5 and know what I'm talking about.
For everything else, you complain about the same things you already had about Q2, which I imagine you liked at that point, otherwise you wouldn't have made the change to Q3.
Let me also point out that after purchasing a Q2 and a Q3, you can't say it should cost half the price as you added in the comments. Because if you made a mistake the first time, it means that when you bought the Q3 you didn't think this.
There is no doubt that it is an expensive camera, just as there is no doubt that the Q3 is not a professional camera, but simply pleasant to use.
Having said this, I find it right to sell an object that no longer satisfies us. 🙃

It’s is perfectly balanced and compact. The R5 is a silly sized mirrorless, too big, can’t compare it to the Q which is way easier to run around with .
Yes this camera is $10,000 here in Australia - unbelievably expensive for something that is really just a toy for a dentist, vet or doctor. For real pro's earning their money with their gear, as you say Patrick, it just can't cut it. For that same 10K I updated all my professional cameras that I use for my paid shoots and got two of the fantastic Z6ii bodies.,with five of their wonderful Z lenses and two professional Godox flashes. I shot an all day event yesterday and my images are gorgeous, my clients are so happy and so am I. If I'd spent that 10K on the Q3, I'd probably be in room weeping. Great video and reality check!

You said that you prefer 35mm because you’re a “35mm shooter at heart” yet somehow you went ahead and bought the Leica Q3 KNOWING FULLY WELL that it had a 28mm lens. Then you said that the flippy screen increased the profile of the camera, but surely you knew that when you were buying it right? Then you blamed the form factor of the Leica Q3 saying that you wanted it to be vastly smaller than the R5, then moving on you blamed the lens saying that with the lens hood it made the camera not as easy to carry as you would like to…..BUT YOU NEVERTHELESS BOUGHT IT………….. 🙄🙄🙄

By the time I got to your point 4, it struck me as really strange that you got the Q3 at all in the first place.
I mean, you knew very well it's got Macro, that the lens was a 28mm lens, etc etc right from the get go, right?
What made you decide to buy it still when you knew very well you didn't like these features?
As I mentioned, sometimes you neglect that the things you concider will pass over a longer period of using as you get familiar with the camera and its features, leaning to shoot with it, edit etc. Which didn't happen for me.
Well done for getting to point 4. I already had these same thoughts by point 3. The rest was just painful viewing 😇
In conclusion, we have a 35mm f/2 lens without macro functionality, a non-articulated screen to maintain a smaller size, a joystick, and more programmable customization options for buttons. Additionally, there might be a "P" version. Personally, I am looking for a documentary camera for everyday use that is not as heavy as my GFX system. Also, I would be happier with less megapixels; 45MP is the maximum for this type of camera.

I don't consider the Q and SL a true Leica as it is missing the manual experience. There are better mirrorless options out there in terms of price, features and value. The Q is too big as a point and shoot, get a X100 or a X-Pro with a pancake. The SL? Get a Sony, Canon, or Panasonic. You can't get the experience of the M anywhere else.

That camera is not for pro use. There are other options.
You are spoiled by the Speed and versatility of the R5. I tried the X100v for 1 trip and sold it. If Canon created a similar camera model to the Q with all of the modern day features I'd buy it.
The x100v is the most overrated rated camera next to the Sony, ummm, everything, EVER. Image quality was incredibly disappointing. The Ricoh GRIiix blows away the x100v(flat, bad color-yep, I said bad color-disappointing low light
As a Leica M user for 2 decades, Q is super easy to use 😂
Check out the Sony A74 it has everything your looking for plus you can also get many pancake lens for it so , keeping the form factor small....or one of the 2 new sony A7C ll models.
Thanks for the tip, I have a pancake on the R5 aswell, but if I have the option to take the R5, I always bring a great lens with it somehow.
You can customise ALL the buttons on the Sony (you'll love the shutter speed dial, it's just what your looking for) plus the Sony is smaller than the canon and you have so many lens options from Sony as well as many 3rd party lens, so much choice. I own the Sony a7IV with several GM f 1.4 lenses (24/35/50/85) in my opinion it is also very compact compared to other cameras. The a7V will probably be presented in 2024/2025.
However, I was always attracted to a Q2/Q3 because of the design of the camera and the colors that come in RAW. Reason, the price and the equipment I already own are keeping me from buying.
Even as Leica Q owner, I totally understand your points from your POV. I'd never take the Q anywhere for many types of shooting I do. With the Fujifilm X100V, it can be a professional camera in a pinch on jobs, but the Leica Q remains as a tool purely for the soul on slow walks and holidays. Leica purists can say all they want, but times change and there are specific needs for different things and romanticism doesn't always work out in every situation. And that's okay.

Bought a Q3 and just sold it after 7 months for literally all these exact reasons. Phenomenal camera but just not for me.
A bit like saying that you purchased a very good screwdriver but it does a terrible job of hammering nails in wood.
And with that there is no built-in ND filter or better, stabilisation!

Hello everyone, Don’t get fooled with these kind of influencers, youtubers exc. I used nikon, canon, fuji all my life until i have bought a leica q2 and i am just amazed with the iq of leica and sold all other gears without any doubt. If there would be a chance for users to try leica they wouldn’t look back again and i swear all the other brands would bankrupt. Leica is far superior from other brands.

This video has and will upset a number of Leica Q3 fanboys. Yes, it’s true… you knew all of these things before buying it and probably got trapped by the hype. Though I have to agree with you on something: a camera at that price point should have the best autofocus, better than the Sony’s, because it’s significantly more expensive than the Sony. On the other hand… I would never advise any photographer to take a fixed 28mm point and shoot camera to a wedding

I hope that before I even bought a camera of 10 Euro’s I would have figured out if the lens would suite me. To buy a 6000 euro 28 mm lens (with camera) and come to the conclusion that you are a 35 mm photographer at hart was an expensive oversight.
As I have mentioned multiple times, I have used the Q2 already before. What no review could tell me is, how happy I would be in the long term and how it would integrate in my daily lifestyle without only testing it for a week. The good thing about Leica is, that I could sell it for the exact same price as I got it.

Why the Q/Q2/Q3 is *not* for me (no social insecurities)
1) I dislike EVFs, i do have *very* delicate eyes, and that color/contrast/overall look of any EVF just doesn't cut it for myself, also dislike the eyecup design. (glasses)
2) 28mm - not my taste, simple as that, it's too wide. I use 35mm since the 80's. i can shoot 80-95% of all things photography with *just* 35mm - it's *that* universal
3) The price point of course, for the asking price of a Q3, i'd get a much better rangefinder for my personal needs, and a few lenses, either way digital or Film (35mm, preferred) via M-Series, or other brands like Konica, or Zeiss.
4) *No* interchangeable lenses - a fixed lens compact (i do know, you can crop digitally to different focal lengths, also 35mm - but it's not that way, how i prefer it)
5) Its great to have choices - as the photographer, YMMV. 🙂
I bought one earlier this year and sent it back within a week. Image quality was shocking for such an expensive camera.

Actually expensive batteries 🤣Hasselblad X2D 100C is a better so more expensive camera in all means than any Leica camera but not in video because it doesn’t have so it is not fair to compare a striker with a goalkeeper, anyway my point is mostly that their batteries last longer, they might be smaller and lighter or at least small and light but less expensive! Like come on, can’t the German brand do like the swedish 🤦🏻♂️

It should be a zoom lens or at least a variable focal length lens even if the aperture would go more than f/2 at least something like 24mm,35,50 or 55 maybe and mostly 85 why not most photography come in those depth of fields instead of one 28mm and crop factor that risk the resolution where you can actually crop in post processing I am okay with just for more zoom an aps-c cropped frame/ super 35 mode
Cropping gives exactly the same results as using a longer lens - just less bokeh and resolution, same "lens distortion" and perspective as a real 35mm.
