This camera is not for me either, but I respect the fact that Leica makes products like this. If you consider a top end FF camera for other brands would probably run close to $3k, and an extremely good f1.7 prime could go for $1500+ and you add the Leica build quality then I don’t think the price is totally unreasonable.
I think this is a delicious camera. But 2 points…I’m only 1 yr into the Q2, so can’t justify a swap now. But I’m also concerned that Leica is slipping away from the minimalist aesthetic with the physical changes. The new autofocus, higher res, and flip screen are cool (my old Canon XC10 has this type flip screen and it is quit good). But I love the Q2 and really want to fully appreciate it before moving on.
I’m surprised to hear an RX1R mention 😂 I use my RX1Rii everyday. It’d be nice to see Sony revisit this system with their current tech. The Zeiss glass gives very rich color rendition and with my favorite color calibration I’m getting the “Leica Look” for a lot less. The Q3 looks like an amazing prospect especially if it’s weather sealed to combat these Dallas thunderstorms 😅. Great review!
The rx1r line long overdue. If only Sony would make a rx1riii that has the af speed of a1 or a9. It will be insane. Because it will likely be cheaper than lecia because its Sony.
Very interesting specs, and interesting camera, but 28mm will never be my goto focal length, I love portraits and 35mm is my absolute fav. I really really really wish that Sony produced an upgraded version of their phenomenal RX1RII which is still my first choice street&travel camera.
You could still use the 35mm crop mode in the Q3 and get a beautiful, and large (though not 60MP), file out of it with the extra benefit of being able to see outside of the 35mm crop lines. That said, I agree about your wish for Sony to update the RX1R.
The Leica Q3 is way out of my financial league. With that said, it's a dream camera of mine - as the Q2 before it - because of the combination of simplicity and versatility. There is a beauty and utility to not having to decide what lens I'm going to choose. Just pick it up and go... all the while becoming as proficient as possible with the tool that is my camera.
I'm so tempted to get the Q3 but that fixed lens is killing me, at least at 28mm. 35mm would've been perfect, it's my favourite focal length by far. My best selling (and favourite) photo's have been shot at 35mm. Great Video ♥
I have a Q, and I find it to crop to 35mm perfectly nicely (50 is a little dicey at only 8 megapixels), so I can only imagine a Q3, with the much higher resolution sensor, will easily crop to 50. You can easily switch between frame lines for cropped shots.
Agree with supposition that coupling the well-made Q’s 60mp BSI sensor with its incredible lens, makes for a great experience that’s reasonably priced. Love that it’s compact, versatile and powerful. I think it’s a big step up from the Q2.
Ted, actually Leica improved the back button focus (focus lock) on the Q2 series in their last firmware update. When you use the back button to focus and lock, it stays locked even after shooting or engaging the shutter button. It is still not on par with back button as implemented by other manufacturers, though. For example, touching any other function button or dial disengages the locked state. I really wish Leica would give us back button focus with the same attributes Canon and others do!
Good to hear that Leica are finally recognising the benefit of BBF, thank you for pointing this out. Every other brand of camera I own is set for BBF. Does it work with C-AF, as in continuously focussing while pressed?
I'm trying very hard not to have "GAS", but the Q3 has really caught my eye. I got back into photography via Fuji with the X-e2 and then Pro-2. In the end two things forced a switch; a bag full of primes (bye bye weight savings) and the fiddly nature of the Pro-2. So I moved it on and got a Canon R6. It's been a great camera, but with the 24-105 f/4 it's a bit of a chunky monkey, so not really an everyday carry. Plus, that 20 mp sensor is not exactly future-proof. The Q3 is checking a LOT of boxes for me.
It feels so out of my league, but then I realize I'm looking at a $3800 Sony and at least 1 $1000 or so lens...I'm almost all the way there in price but probably with a bigger heavier setup that isn't as nice in many ways. Bummer you can't get the bokeh of a 90mm as well, but this is such a nice simple setup with no switching and tons of versatility...seems worth.
Why is nobody talking about the new 5 Leica Camera looks in the Q3? It looks like Leica is trying to incorporate something very interesting, like Fuji´s film simulations. In Leica app 4.0 you can see that for now, is only available for the Q3
People that complain about the Price , first its a leica (duh) but you get a real high qualtiy lens with the camera that you dont get when you buy your d5 etc
But, you don't get features (that many less expensive cameras have) that are considered nearly essential...like in-body stabilization for that 60MP sensor?
Did they fix the issue with the black bar popping up on the bottom of the lcd when you half press the shutter button? It really drove me crazy when it came to composing my shots with the lcd.
Leica makes interesting cameras, the idea of cropping to different focal lengths is very practical, and the imaging quality of Leica cameras is undisputed. The price alone... As an Olympus and Ricoh photographer, I don't see any real benefit to justify the price difference. Unfortunately. Anyway, dear Ted, thank you for your inspiring videos.
I love the way you break down Photography for an enthusiast like us.. I would love to see you break down a camera as well the way you do with photographs. May be Fujifilm xs20 or XT4 / XT5
Thanks for the excellent walk through! When my Q3 eventually arrives, it will pair with my Sony RX100M7. I guess I have a weakness for discrete form factors that are pricey and ambitious.
I’m getting one the second they email availability. Love the Q2 but the Q3 just seems better. Will wind up with Q3, M11, M11 mono with five lens and a D-lux so my kid grabs that not touch my gear.
Besides the cost of the camera, as a photographer, you will never get the separation on your subject with a fixed lens that you can get with interchangeable lenses! This is why I sold my X100V. Don’t get me wrong it’s a beautiful camera and I like the improvements in the auto focus, viewfinder. I guess it comes down to you how much money you’re willing to put down on a camera. I for one can buy a whole system with three main primes. Fuji XT5 18 1.4, 33 1.4, 90 F2. And still have money left over! 🖖
Hey I shoot with that whole Fuji kit you mentioned and much more including a Xpro1 and XH2S. But my Leica SL2 and Q-P are stunning in their own IQ. Great times for photography.
1:38 long lenses don't have 'natural compression' the perspective is determined by the position of the camera. If you use a 90mm lens on a FF camera it will have the same perspective (same compression) as a 90mm crop mode on the Q3. There will be a difference in other aspects since only a small fraction of the sensor is being used (about 1/8 the area) but the perspective is not changed. Depth of field effects would be different, the Q3 cropped to 90mm at f/1.7 won't have the same depth of focus as an f/1.7 90mm FF lens on a FF camera, but you could stop down the FF camera to get the same depth of focus if you wanted.
Their stubbornness towards back button focus is odd to me because it seems the type of photographers these cameras are aimed at are the exact type who would use BBF.
I’m thinking of upgrade my Q to Q3 as the Q now almost 10 years old but its still one of the best fix lens camera for still photography in term of iq and night shot .
Great review. I've had the Q2 for over a year and it's been a phenomenal camera in every aspect. I doubt my pockets will stretch to the Q3 for a while but this new upgrade to the Q system looks very impressive. By the way, the Q3 does have perspective control like the M11 and SL2 although this wasn't part of the recent Q2 firmware upgrade. And, as far as I know, the new Q3 battery will work with the Q2 and SL2.
@Phillip Banes Interesting. Sensor differences, maybe? I’d expect some growing pains in the first couple of firmware versions as they adapt the sensor to this platform…
It 's not a review. He said so himself. It's just a preview. But boy, it's a really hard sell of a video. Agree that the cropped pictures looked very soft. Maybe even out of focus. His description of how the auto focus was just so easy or simple to use is contradicted by the problem with it that he then described.
Wow! Nirvana! The new summit! I have no idea how I ever mangaed to make photos! Small photos, large ones, in magazines, newspapers, adverising, publicity, weddings and my own personal work! Mostly with one film, the 50mm lens. Life was simple. no new models. My M3 is now 56 years in my use! Will I buy!? Nah! I find the phone better for my needs and use!
Hi Ted, thanks for the as always very informative review. That is a great camera. I can’t understand why there is no joystick. Once you’re used to it, it’s totally disturbing to use a navigation pad/levers again. I’ll never forget the day I purchased the D500, my first camera with joystick. What a relief. Also Hasselblad‘s X2D. That tiny gadget joystick is so incredibly convenient. If the X2D had one, I’d purchased one immediately, but I’m still hesitating. Now the GFX100 II is released and that thing is very tempting - and has a tilt screen you also can use for overhead shots as well as vertical tilt. 7:08
Agree. They probably didn't want it to protrude at all, given their design aesthetic. That said, I am a Leica and Nikon shooter and I LOVE the joystick on my Z9 vs the nav pads on my earlier Nikon bodies.
Very nice first video of q3 - liked it a lot. And ... ah ah ah, there is also the Zeiss ZV1sompact full frame camera with fixed lens ... but yeah, specs are way better with q3 of course
Great review for what seems a great ‘little’ almost unique FF camera, (of cos if u dropped the ‘FF’ there is the whole world of Fuji. But Leica has gone entirely the other way, especially now with the new 60mbs sensor, more detail so mite find you hv 2 or 3 different images in one shot… ‘looking forward to the longer review.
If you want the same image quality... get the GFX50R from Fuji for less than 2000 USD. Not the same kind of photography... but I would say image quality is even better.
Great Review as always, you are awesome. I think the resolution is amazing but that tilt screen looks very bad in my opinion, I prefer the back part of the Q2
"Lens compression" is not a thing. The difference in the "compression" is the distance from the subject, not the focal lenght. If you crop a 28mm lens to a 70mm field of view, the framing will be exactly the same as a native 70mm lens.
01:38 "you won't have the natural compresion" this is inaccurate- compression is a result of the subject being far away from the camera, not something happening in the actual lens. Cropping in results in the same compression you would get with an equivalent telephoto lens
In photography, when we refer to compression we are speaking of a phenomenon involving lenses and the distance from the subject to the background and the subject to the camera. Compression is the “compressing” of a scene - a phenomenon in which the background appears to be closer to a subject and larger in comparison than it actually is. This compressed effect is achieved with telephoto lenses. The longer the lens, the further back the photographer must step back from the subject to keep them the same size in the frame and the larger and closer the background will appear. Some really interesting images can be created this way, for example in which the moon looms larger-than-life over a subject.
It looks like not. "Open Gate" video is what you're looking for. Right now Fujifilm X-H2S and the new XS-20 have Open Gate along with the Panasonic GH6 have it.
I still prefer the q2, the flip out screen doesn't do it for me, looks cheap! I think a lot of people will be wishing they kept their q2 after updating to the q3. Love to know if the q3 battery will fit the q2?
Nice but 60 megapixals is counter productive. Lots of much smaller pixels so low light work suffers and also digital zoom is definitely not optical. Damn good lens though. Slick presentation, good script. Cheers
They definitely need a fixed lens full frame competitor. The market is wide open and as one can see the Fuji X100V is unavailable, and it is not full frame anyway. That SONY offering is years and years old, but the price is looking much better by comparison.
Patiently waited for the Q3 to finally be able to use it professionally with the rumoured internal storage for redundancy. Looks like it will remain a camera for amateurs only. What a shame.
is there an in camera preview to the selected crop possible ? or some focus check preview mode (in autofocus mode). the higher resolution on the screens will help with all that but i feel that should just be possible with firmware updates on the q2 too. thanks for the feedback
@Millenial Memes yeah I get that .. but it would just be a software feature to implement that possibility to better check the action / focus of the part you are actually interested in atm, with the rest of the scene as your composition and still being able to crop adjust in post.
Ted, would you mind to make an updated video with more samples in it? (I know there are other sources from which I can find samples but I think your photography has a level of care put into it not seen from other photography journalists)
Thanks Howard - I will for sure. I only had a few days with the Q3 before it had to go back, which wasn’t enough time to get the shots I would have liked. I will definitely follow up with an extensive review soon.

😍😍😍 time to jump on an used Q2 haha
Finally, a perfect camera!
Actually, just bought an open box Q2 M. I’m looking forward to the Q3 M in about 11/2-2 years.
Cropping in will give you exactly the same "compression" as using a longer lens. It only depends on your distance to subjects & background.
Wow!
Thanks for the review. I was hoping for an actual 28mm f2 lens, it would make the camera smaller. The lens on these Qs are more like 25mm.
This certainly won't tempt me to give up my M10R.
Ted, loving this review of Leica Q3.
I have the same sensor in my Sony a7r v. I absolutely love it.
Just because they are 60 megapixel means they are same sensor? I have the a7rv. I love it too.
@@sgpork pretty sure they bought the sensor from Sony. I read it recently
@@sgpork I read it on the Leica Rumor site
That flip screen reminds me of a GoPro accessory
Excellent review as usual!
That white linen shirt has become your trademark now... plz don't change it
Does it have a bulb mode for astrophotography?
im already saving for the Q3 monochrome 😜
Oh, I so wish this Q3 is not attractive enough to upgrade my beloved Q2, but I’m wrong. I also have that Oberwerth Q bag, a perfect match.
Great Review as always, you are awesome.
I think the resolution is amazing but that tilt screen looks very bad in my opinion, I prefer the back part of the Q2
Even if you crop down to 35,50,75 or 90, aren't you always shooting at 28mm?
just tried the q2 monochrom at the store a few days ago and here this comes lol
Is that an Orient Kamasu ur wearing?

Fuji made 2 CONVERTION LENSES FOR THE x100V SERIES A WIDE ANGLE ANS A TELE
CONVERTER. wHY DOESN'T SOMEONE LIKE VOIGTLANDER MAKE ONE FOR THE Q3?
Has the evf & display finally been correected or improved?
Panasonic needs to come out with a similar camera to the Q3.
At 50mm is the cropped video also recoverable like the still images? Can you adjust crops like you can on photos?
It looks like not. "Open Gate" video is what you're looking for. Right now Fujifilm X-H2S and the new XS-20 have Open Gate along with the Panasonic GH6 have it.
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 Panasonic S5ii and S5iix has open gate 6K as well.
I still prefer the q2, the flip out screen doesn't do it for me, looks cheap!
I think a lot of people will be wishing they kept their q2 after updating to the q3. Love to know if the q3 battery will fit the q2?
The batteries are interchangeable.
The lens hood for the Leica Q3 is £200. That tells you everything you need to know.
I’m definitely getting a Q3 but absolutely refuse to sell my Q-P.
Curious as to you think about the Pixii A2572. A modern digital camera using the Leica M-mount.
I will sit this one out again, still hoping that Leica gives us a true 35mm option, the Q3s with the 35mm summilux FLE.😎✌️
@Millenial Memes yeah I get that .. but it would just be a software feature to implement that possibility to better check the action / focus of the part you are actually interested in atm, with the rest of the scene as your composition and still being able to crop adjust in post.
so beautiful!
if they had 100mp sensor the 90mm crop would have been a serious feature
This just made the Q2 a bargain!!
Much waited ❤
Hey, great video. Just wondering if the video recording stops after 29 minutes? I've heard people say it goes past that but the specs say it doesn't.
I will wait for Q3 Monochrom.
Thank you Ted for another great video. Got one little question. Does the bottom information bar still blocks the view on the LCD screen all the time?
I really wish Sony would redo the Rx1. There needs to be some competition in this space.
In days past, you used to be able to buy an entire Volkswagen Beetle for $1799.00 😊
Is BBF still a benefit? I thought BBF was useful for focus and recompose which is not needed with mirrorless + tracking
No optical viewfinder. I'll stick with my Digilux-2 .
Can I use the upper part I don’t know what is it called to connect I microphone or simply use the bluetooth or the usb-c maybe?
Hello,
Nice video, thank you. I'm waiting for my Leica Q3 😊
Where did you get this grainy leather Oberwerth Q bag ? On their website there is no grainy leather option😢
Thank you
