Thanks for posting. As a person who will be buying their first Leica ever, I would very interested in having you do a full cover tutorial on how to use the Q3.
Your video on the Q3 was the most thorough and valuable of any on the internet. Thank you for your continued willingness to share your expertise and passion!
Your Q3 video was wonderful. I've not made the decision to buy a Q3 but the Q3 has every improvement I was hoping for. Thank you mathphotographer and thank you Leica.
This is a superb and highly detailed introduction to the Q3. Thank you for this. I don't think my pockets can yet stretch from my current Q2 to the Q3 but at least I know what to expect when I'm ready! Oh, and the Q3 DOES have perspective control now. That's the feature I was hoping to see in the Q2 firmware upgrade but it didn't happen so good news there. I like the tilt screen as well. This is a solid upgrade from Leica as far as I can tell.
Thank you for that awesome first look. At the release of this video, this is the most in depth video there is. plus the comparison to the Q2 is highly needed! Thank you!
Thank you very much for your patience, your time, your knowledge and your passion. I've really appreciated your video and, since my q3 will arrive next week, i will look for new videos to be prepared for my beauty to come. As other people said, a tutorial on the use of the camera and on the profiles would be really fantastic. Great job!
Thanks for the compliments :) The lens cap has some finish inside which looks and feels really durable, I hope and think it will sit firmly on the lens also after some years :)
Absolutely terrific introduction and comparison. I still have not decided to abandon my Q2, but now I have a much better understanding of the new features should I decide to do so. I also learned new information about my Q2. Keep up the great work.
I just bought a Fuji XT4 and a $1500 lens, which I love... but, I would def love to own a Leica camera one day! The photos from this thing are just stunning!
Wow! As always, the most in-depth assessment of new camera gear on the web... and like a day after announcement. Love it. I'm very tempted, but I can't justify it between an MP & and an SL2.
Thank you for the in-depth walkthrough of all the features! I plan on using this as my main video camera for youtube, so I would really love to have an in-depth video tutorial of the Q3 as you mentioned!
Great video! I just received my Q3 and can't help but notice it feels a lot more plastic compared to my Q2. The lens cover, SD card door, front of camera texturing, and overall the body feels more thin and plastic-like. When I pick up my Q2, it feels like a cold tank, but the Q3 feels much different. Do you agree?
Really well produced. I have Q3 now and am very interested in the movie capabilities. A new area for me. So thanks for waking my interest. Any further Q3 guides will be be welcomingly received. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video! I just got my Q2 for 4750 USD, the new Q3 goes for 7400 USD if I want to get it ASAP at where I live. Really excited on getting my first Leica!
Nice intro to the Q3. I now have mine too. Btw. The screw thread on the shutter release is only for the soft release button accessory. There is no cable release on the Q3.
Excellent content, Math! I enjoyed watching the video a lot! Say, do you have some hints on this in comparison to the X2D? I want to strip down my gear and just choose one daily driver for documentary shooting. It is either the X2D with a 38mm or the Q3. Any opinions? 😅 I miss the rangefinder style on the X2D even though it is excellent ergonomically.
Thank you Math for this video! By far the best video I've seen on this camera! Two questions: - The Q3 has a maximum recording time of 29 minutes. Is this still the case with an Atomos? - Does the Q3 have an external microphone output? If not, it's really a big lack (unacceptable). Thanks a lot!
Thank you for your kind feedback. I don't think you have restrictions when recording to the Atomos but I will find out next weeks. The Q3 has no microphone input but I will try to get it work via USB-C, its one of the things I have on my list for trying out.
but the most important for me would be to know more about colours coming from the Q3 ( raw ) ? it does look quite similar to the Q2 but the the Q(1) was quite more pinkish / organic while the Q2 got a more earthy rendering . I would love to know more about the "colour science ' of this upgrade .. many thanks
Thanks Boris, I will shoot this camera a lot in the next weeks and might have the opportunity to include some facts on colour science in a future video.
Thanks for the review! Well done. I would enjoy more specific steps on how you recovered the shadows in the the images with the 4 stops under exposure. Also, what settings would you suggest for the every day amateur video??? Thanks for your review. Geoff
As always I am appreciative of your comprehensive review. Regarding installing firmware updates, does Q3 provide change that preclude need to copy firmware on external card and then install the card on camera to carryout update?
You can upgrade via firmware file on SD-card, inserting and starting the process, or, much more convenient, connect the Q3 to the Leica Fotos App and installing the new firmware via WiFi or "USB-C to Lightning" cable connections. Works both flawless.
Thanks for all the highlights, great video! Quick question for anyone who has the Q2 vs Q/Q-P...I just got the Q3 delivered yesterday and also have a Q-P. I find that on the Q3, there is a slight 'lag' between when i start turning the manual focus ring and when the EVF/LCD displays the magnified view. On the Q-P, there is almost no lag at all - it's basically instant. I find this a bit annoying on the Q3 as it slightly impacts my ability to capture a photo at a precise moment after nailing focus via the magnified view. For anyone who has a Q3/Q2, do you have a similar experience compared to the Q? Thanks!
This will probably be my first Leica. Going to the store this weekend to check it out. Really hoping it does well for product photography as well (hobby level). I’ve never used a fixed lens camera before.
@@mathphotographer I loved my experience with it! Unfortunately, no Stock till September in London :( at least that’s what the salesperson at Harris’s Leica said.
thank you, thank you! Just ordered my first Leica, a Q3. Looking forward to your video tutorials as I want to do travel photography and need both stills and motion. Appreciated your explanation of the use of the Ninja. Would love for you to explore Pro Res. You are the best!
Thank you for posting such a well prepared and be delivered video about this new camera from Leica. It’s so refreshing when the presentation is given at a conversation pace and the audience has time to assimilate the information being presented. If there is time in a subsequent offering it would be beneficial to prospective purchaser new to the Q to see a series of images which compare the relationship between the perceived comparative depth of field for images taken in the Q2 cropped method compared to images taken at their true focal length with an interchangeable lens camera at the same focal lengths, shutter speeds and iso. A discussion around the above would help address questions about how comparable, if at all, the digitally cropped image looks compared to the image taken with a native lens of the same aperture. Kindest Regards.
Great video, thank you. I have not understood one thing though. Let's say I'd want to record video in 4k, will I be able to select upfront the focal length? If so, what would be my options, all four of them 28, 35, 50 and 75?
Thank you for a review sufficiently inspiring to encourage me to go out and buy one. Getting hold of one proved elusive but with a bit of luck and a bit of travel I did manage to buy one- the last piece in a camera shop in Annecy, France. Having set it up I am now trying to figure out the menus. A tutorial from you for the first time Q3 users would be huge help
I wish, though, that the shutter speed was increased to at least 1/4000 th sec. but still there are really big and meaningful upgrades to this series of camera. Thanks for the upload.😊
Thank you very much. I was going to stay with my Q2, which I love, but you have me thinking of upgrading. One question: is the 60 mg less forgiving with camera shake than the 47 mg of the Q2?
Its ok. I will post coming Saturday a video on dynamic range, pixel binning and high ISO as well as hand-hold shooting. This will finally convince you :)
Thank you for another great video. Assume since you did not mention it, the Q3 has the same constraints regarding long exposure as the Q2? Thanks and regards.
Excellent review as always. Two questions. Is it more practical now to have a rear focussing back button compared to Q2. Is it easier compared to Q2 to accidentally activate the menu and play buttons now they are on the right.
Once you get used to it, the change of location of buttons will not irritate your shooting workflow. And back-button focus works as before like a charm if you customise the camera for it. Thanks for your kind feedback.
I am waiting for the Q3 M. I bought a used Q2 but it was an open box. I had the M 11 was never really happy with it. Have owned every Monochrom model that Leica has made; the very 1st M Monochrom, 246 Monochrom, M10 M. I grew up shooting film specifically 4x5, ad I have to say, that even the very 1st Monochrom, were nearly as sharp as my 4x5 work.
Good video Math, I have seen 2 others before watching yours but yours is so much more detailed with good examples, bravo on behalf of that. To be honest, I am not so hyped by the Q3 As you know I own a Q (P) which came with 2 batteries so I never have problems in that matter. When I bought the Q, the Q2 was already for sale but as you know, I rather have 24 MP with better Low Light performance than more MP's Now this 60 MP sensor is for me just ridiculous and a marketing must have which is IMO useless. (please don't give the excuse of better post editing cause most of the people hardly know how to edit an image anyway, the spoil more than gain) Recovering 4 stops under exposed images I already practice with my Q (iso invariant too) and with success ( at ISO 100 instead of cranking up the ISO in camera which algorithm in very low light conditions is not that good ) although this would be so much better with Capture One cause it has the Lightness slider which is much more powerful than the Exposure slider in LR especially to avoid chroma noise in post. What's good IMO is the tilt screen and maybe the eye auto focus but then we have focus peeking and this is not per se a portrait camera. Then I wonder if the focus peeking is better (read as more clearly than a Q or Q2) if you can do that test and get back to me I would be obliged. But all my comments don't detract from your review, WELL DONE MATH Thanks for sharing ! And only stupid people zoom in to a bit level on a digital photo on a screen cause it is totally useless
@@daviddb4858 true but would you buy a Q3 for dedicated landscape photography? And why do you need 60 mp for landscape photography? I printed photos over 3 feet with 21 mp images without a problem cause at that size the distance to the photo is at least 10 feet
Thanks for your kind comment, RS. After some years together on this channel I know your reasonable sentiment on Megapixel and I am not at all surprised that you are not hyping the Q3, its just not the right camera for you, your shooting habits and your photo art :) I love the Q-cameras (now the Q3 in my luggage) for short-term travel where I do not want to carry a lot of gear. I am frequently on long distance flights but return after two or three nights. Then the Q2 was and now the Q3 is my perfect companion. As you know from various videos, I love the 28mm perspective for street and travel. And almost every pro-feature is now incorporated into the compact camera body of the Q3. Since my specialty are cityscapes at night, the Q3 is just what I need when on travel. I will post a short video next couple of weeks on night photography with the Q3 - its the same terrific image quality and detail as I get it from my M11. On the focus peaking, I will look into it and get back. Have a great weekend!
I am waiting for a Leica Q3, like everyone. I really mostly do black and white photography but like the versatility of color and other features. Do the extra megapixels on the Q3 make up for the sharpness that I will lose by shooting monochrome on the Q3 as opposed to a Q2-M? Many people are wondering this, and I think you could explain this scientifically as well as with side by side macro comparisons between the Q3 in monochrome as opposed to the Q2-M. I am particularly interested in the images without using post production technology of lightroom, etc., though it would also be interesting to have your opinion on whether lightroom post production would be necessary or advisable if I buy the Q3 instead of the Q2-M. Thanks, I really like your explanations.
Am I mad to think this is a actually a great deal? When I compare the lenses + bodies I would need to buy to match the performance of the Q3 (I feel like I am getting 3 Leica primes here, but even if I was to compare just the Summilux 28mm) I think I am saving money going this route?
Spot-on, Ali. The lens of the Q3 stand-alone would cost you about $4000+ so the overall price of the Q3 is a great value proposition in Leica pricing terms.
I'm glad I waited for the Q3. My only reservation is the monochrome noise. Did Leica resolve the high ISO noise issues that the Q2 suffered compared to the Q2 Monochrome?
Thank you for the comprehensive review. I was waiting for the part where you test the long exposure settings… does it still have the same limitations as the Q2 when you try to to shoot at iso 3200 ? Can you do more than 4 seconds ?
Couple of seconds and then the camera is ready. Not the fastest switch-on time I have seen when compared with other pro cameras but reasonably ok and fast.
Thanks! Indeed I was wondering if I can get the new looks also on the Leica Q2. Could come with a firmware upgrade, a minor one only. Should not be difficult or resource-intense to get this feature to the Leica Q2.
Thank You for another great video. On my Q2 Monochrom I touch screen focus with face detect on simultaneously, does the Q3 now come with the aforementioned plus focus traking in photo mode?
First thing I did with my Q2 was to put the lens cap back in the box and used the rubber KURVD cap. Works great and a lot cheaper to replace. I would do the same with the Q3.
Expensive, yes. But a really good travel camera :) Sometimes when traveling in not so safe areas I put a black sphere sticker on the Leica red dot, it then catches less attention.
Love the hinge screen - a feature I asked Leica for in their survey. Shame they changed the button layout though. I bought the M11 instead of the M10-R in part because it had the same button layout to the left of the rear screen so that I could set them the same.
The hinge screen is a real plus, yes! On the new button layout: you get used to it very quickly, after using it for a while its like it never had been differently.
Hi Matt. Yes, please do a ‘complete’ video for the Q3 in the same format as the one you did for the Sony A7RV. And, like that one, the same comment, why not complete the set by offering a downloadable version (outside of You Tube) and monetise your excellent guides. Better than many of the ‘experts’ out there. You stay safe too 👍
Excellent! I switched from the SL2 to the SL2-S for the BSI 24mp sensor. I have found a substantial improvement in low light conditions over the SL2. Now with the new Q3 sensor, I am curious as to its low light/high ISO performance.
Two video on the Q3 are in the making for next couple of weeks: One on shooting cityscapes at night, images are processed already, terrific image quality. Another one on dynamic range and high ISO behaviour. I will try to address all points people might be interested in when posting these two videos.
a review as we expect from you, to the point accurate and no empty talk. Although it is akready exceptional that you indicate some differences between the 3 MP selections, I would appreciate some more detail such as what do you mean by best performance ratio for 36MP and low noise for 18MP, do you mean on the same level as the SL2-S?
Many thanks Geert. What I mean by that is that in L-resolution the Q3 has 14 stops of dynamic range. If you choose M- or S-resolution you get 15 stops of dynamic range so a bit better performance in low light. I am working on a demonstration for a video on that topic since it involves the new pixel binning algorithm from Leica which is very interesting.
Should I get the Leica q2 reporter edition or the q3? I love how the reporter edition looks but the q3 is so nice also and the latest model. It’ll be my first Leica. Thoughts?
The video capabilities are very similar now. What's not yet implemented in the Leica Q3 video mode is "Follow Focus" ... this is a very neat feature which I hope comes to the Q3 via a firmware upgrade.
The batteries are the same fit, just different capacities. Leica has not yet certified the use of using the Q2 battery , in a Q3. But, Leica says ( I called Leica Los Angeles), you can use a Q3 battery in a Q2. You can go down but not up.....until tests and certification say otherwise.Peter McKinnon simply says that they are not compatible. They are, but not yet officially recommended to swap. Great vid as always.
Thanks for posting. As a person who will be buying their first Leica ever, I would very interested in having you do a full cover tutorial on how to use the Q3.

Thanks for the presentation does the camera has a memory card if not where the pictures are stores
The camera uses the SD card format. There is only one slot (not two as in the SL2) and there is also no internal memory as we have it in the M11.
Great video!! Do you have a source for the L log Rec 709 conversion LUT??
Good video Math, I have seen 2 others before watching yours but yours is so much more detailed with good examples, bravo on behalf of that.
To be honest, I am not so hyped by the Q3
As you know I own a Q (P) which came with 2 batteries so I never have problems in that matter.
When I bought the Q, the Q2 was already for sale but as you know, I rather have 24 MP with better Low Light performance than more MP's
Now this 60 MP sensor is for me just ridiculous and a marketing must have which is IMO useless. (please don't give the excuse of better post editing cause most of the people hardly know how to edit an image anyway, the spoil more than gain)
Recovering 4 stops under exposed images I already practice with my Q (iso invariant too) and with success ( at ISO 100 instead of cranking up the ISO in camera which algorithm in very low light conditions is not that good ) although this would be so much better with Capture One cause it has the Lightness slider which is much more powerful than the Exposure slider in LR especially to avoid chroma noise in post.
What's good IMO is the tilt screen and maybe the eye auto focus but then we have focus peeking and this is not per se a portrait camera.
Then I wonder if the focus peeking is better (read as more clearly than a Q or Q2) if you can do that test and get back to me I would be obliged.
But all my comments don't detract from your review, WELL DONE MATH
Thanks for sharing !
The newest video on my channel on the Q3 answers your question, have a look :) No more constaints.
@@mathphotographer it truly did thank you! Now I can say I HAVE to upgrade to the Q3 regardless of how much I love my Q2 Reporter.
I imagine that for video work, you will need a variable ND, right? Any recommendations on a filter system?
How about the time for startup and take the first photo?
Couple of seconds and then the camera is ready. Not the fastest switch-on time I have seen when compared with other pro cameras but reasonably ok and fast.
@@mathphotographer Thanks a lot 👍
Awesome review as usual! wonder if there is a way we can get the new Leica Looks on Q2 as well.
Yes there is focus tracking in both, photo mode and video mode. And it works very well.
First thing I did with my Q2 was to put the lens cap back in the box and used the rubber KURVD cap. Works great and a lot cheaper to replace. I would do the same with the Q3.
Thanks for your comment. If someone is interest in it, please see here: kuvrdcamera.com/pages/ulc
Best Q3 review on the RUclips 👏👏💯💯
Wow, thanks!
Beautiful camera, no discussion about that. But that price… you get a robbing target instant in some parts of the world. Thx for the review!
Expensive, yes. But a really good travel camera :) Sometimes when traveling in not so safe areas I put a black sphere sticker on the Leica red dot, it then catches less attention.
Fair points. I will post coming Saturday a video about dynamic range, pixel binning and high ISO of the Q3. This will make your day :)
Thank you for fantastic review. Really useful detailed review, delivered with real passion. An incredible camera.
Many thanks, Marcus.
You answered all my questions I had
Great video
Perspective control is finally here!
Yes, LPC is finally implemented in a Q-camera. Thank you for your kind feedback.
You stay safe too 👍
Thanks Michael, will seriously consider to do a fully fledged tutorial :)
MIC in jack missing - or can you use USB C for that?
I hope so, I will test it and come back.
@@mathphotographer Thanks!
Such a joy watching your videos! Thank you for sharing your experience. looking forward to learning more with you r future videos. Cheers!
Many thanks for your kind feedback.
a review as we expect from you, to the point accurate and no empty talk.
Very informative video - as always. I would like to see a comprehensive review. Many thanks
Thanks Mathias, there is more to come on the Q3 the next weeks, promise :)
Hi do you have a link for the Matt screen protector Thanks
Does the larger battery last longer in the Q3 than the Q2 with its standard battery? How much more? Thx.
Should I get the Leica q2 reporter edition or the q3? I love how the reporter edition looks but the q3 is so nice also and the latest model. It’ll be my first Leica. Thoughts?
I would go for features, means the Q3 :)
@@mathphotographer thanks! I’m going to be preordering one soon. Really excited about this!
Excellent introduction, thank you very much!
Please do a comparison between the video capabilities of the Q3 vs SL2-S
Thanks! The extended capacity battery is safe in the Q2, SL2 and SL2-S.
good preview as usual Math.. 👌🏻
Thanks!
The manual suggests that the button in the centre of the D pad is also a custom button?
Yes - but I use it in default setting.
Stunningly well done professor! Thanks.
Haha, thanks!
Thanks for a very informative and interesting video.
Beautifully done. Thanks very much. Peace
