I have watched several reviews of the Q3, and all of them dove straight into the camera's technical features, which is useful to be sure. You, however, spoke on a personal level about your connection to the camera and to photography. I truly enjoyed hearing a review from that perspective. I managed to purchase the Q3, and even though I've used it very little thus far, I can already tell I am going to really enjoy this camera. I can already tell I will dive into this camera just to see where it will take me, just for the joy of it. Thank you for your perspective on this wonderful camera!
This philosophy is against physiology - it is proven humans are having issues remembering things happening quickly like short scenes less than 5-10 seconds. That’s why you get out from cinema after you watched a marvel movie and cannot remember anything. Plus there is no chance to build up viable character.
Liked your presentation style. The camera’s features were presented, directly without hyperbole, supported with examples. Worth watching more than once to insure nuances were not missed. Thanks!
I love the way your portraits look. Would love to see a video of you processing them. From your mononchrome and from colour files. A video on how to maximise your mononchrome files? Love your videos. Thanks.
Q user here, with a Q3 order pending delivery. Would also love to see more on your post-processing, especially mimicking the Q2 Monochrom look with the Q3.
You can crop in a 28mm to 50mm but you can't zoom out a 50mm fixed lens & not always you can just step even few steps back. But you can always (mostly) take few steps ahead. 28mm is perfection. Love your portraits 😍👏

Hi Paul, great video, I just ordered one Q3 as I already wanted to order a Q2, but then the Q3 was released and I like the 28mm and the tilting screen and the idea to crop into a 60MP frame inside the camera. I just shot since the last 6month with the Fujifilm X100V and the 23mm (35mm equivalent) limits me as I could not always step backwards. As well there is some magic around the brand Leica and I want once in my life to own one. Now my dream comes true. Next week I turn back to Germany and will hold in my hands. It was delivered yesterday and I’m quiet curious if the magic will influence my work. I follow your channel and stay in touch. All the best Peter
Thanks for your review. I’m an SL, CL and Lumix user and it was good to hear your perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed your PoV. I’ll be checking in to see more of your B&W work.
Great pictures, by a great photographer on a great camera. My Q2 made me love photography. I will be a Q person for life and I believe the upgrade is worth it as there are numerous extra features. In car terms, this is a completely new model, rather than a facelift.
I will be swapping my Q2 for a Q3 as soon as possible because of the sensor. Not for all those lovely 60mp but because it’s a triple resolution, pixel binning BSI sensor. Being able to resolve at 18mp but still using the full back lit sensor will make it an incredible camera for low light shooting
Wonderful video, Paul! (The reader comments below are also well written and helpful.) I've been thinking over the last day about what the Q2 gives me in my portraits and could not find anything (so far) in the Q3 that would make me switch. Sure, the flip screen might be a nice thing to have at times (definitely for a street photographer)... but my subjects KNOW they are being photographed so there is no need to 'sneak' a shot. lol 47mp also sits at the absolute sweet spot for resolution as well.... 60mp (I get that with a Canon 5DSR) simply adds more time retouching skin blemishes and pores in the type of work I do. The focusing on the Q2 is perfectly fine and the recent eye tracking software upgrade solves any lingering frustrations! Cheers, mate!
Thanks so much. I think for slow moving subjects, especially portraits there’s maybe not that much to upgrade for. I did find the medium DNG file setting handy at a wedding though
Thanks Connor, it’s a fairly new channel really that I never really intended for anything else other than to show my photos big on a tv. But I’m into it now! Ha haa
Would have preferred a 35mm but 28mm is fine for me. If Leica comes out with a nifty fifty version I’d buy that to go along with the 28. Easier to carry two fairly light weight cameras then change lenses when your walking around. Great review love the calmness and patient quality you have.

Thank you very much. As I approach 80 years of age, I want to continue shooting high quality photos with less gear/fewer lenses. This will be my second Leica (last one, 15 years ago). This one should serve me well as the only camera I will need!
I second that .I`m early seventies and have been shooting Leica for 25 years .I`ve thinned out the herd but a Q sounds the ideal camera for most of what I do. I`ve shot 28mm for a few years using Richo and find the FL very flexible .
A good and informative video. I'm a Q2 owner along with a Canon 5Ds. I have owned a Q and now the Q2, both of which moved me away from the Canon, not because the Canon is a bad camera, far from it, but like you say the Leica makes you want to take pictures. Your Video makes a lot of sense to me and I'm now more excited about getting the Q3, which is on order, infact I'm also thinking of selling the Canon and sundry lenses to get myself a Q2 mono as well. I look forward to watching more of your videos...... keep up the good work.
Very seldom do I miss not having a tilting screen on my Q2. I have come to the conclusion that it it is due to the focal length giving such a wide field of view that in many cases you just have to point in a general direction and trust the autofocus or manually zone focus to just point and shoot.
I hope the Q3 is going strong in a couple of year when I retire…using Q2 now and want another bump up. Lovely video, well paced, and informative. I appreciate that…so many are too fast, or pushing products too much. Well done! And my photo teacher emphasized decades ago…get in close…don’t be a voyeur with a zoom lens!
The problem is while travelling. I travel to more rough countries and areas where you definitely don't want a camera that's worth more than a year salary over there. I've got cameras stolen etc and was really happy I did not have a Leica by then. Still got great images and felt more secure in my mind knowing I'm not carrying a fortune.
I hope when I have the money next year they announce a Q3 monochrome. If not I’ll just get a Q3 28 or 43. It will be my first and I can’t wait. You’ve been a big inspiration for me wanting to only shoot B&W.
Very enjoyable. I'm grabbing my 28mm f/2.8 prime, putting it on my almost 5 year old Z7, and going exploring! I loved your street portraits so much. I'm gutless in that regard.
These cameras are a huge game changer and they will help you become a better photographer. I have just received my Q3 and have owned a Q2 monochrom for some years now. These cameras are without a doubt my all-time favorites, an absolute joy to use, with image quality that blows you away, and a superb build quality that no other brand offers. My Canon R5 and it's pro range lenses, Fuji Xpro 3 and it's pro lenses or the pro-Nikons I have owned in the past do not remotely compare to the joy of the user experience of these cameras or the image quality they produce. If you write these cameras off because you think they are just 'rich kids toys', or are 'unnecessary'....you're doing yourself no favors and are missing out on something truly amazing.
I would like to see a portrait of several individuals side-by-side with the Q3. The wide angle distortion of people or other objects on the same plane has been my main problem with the Q2. Thanks for the great review. I am tempted except for the 28mm.
Great video with useful and insightful thoughts and experiences. I would like to see the Q3 run through it's paces of ISO and night shoots. Let's see what this new processor can do!
I was waiting for your video Paul. I had been contemplating purchasing the M11M and one lens (as mentioned on another of your videos) but ultimately got my hands on the Q3 earlier today. I'm excited to get into the Leica world! Thanks for your video!
Thanks as always Paul for this excellent review with the Q3. You've hit all the points I wanted to hear and done it in your own initimable way. I sold my Q2 awhile ago in anticipation of the Q3 as I had a good offer but was worried I'd regret it later. This checked all the boxes I needed for my future camera and it could possibly replace my M11 which the Q2 couldn't. Too many choices is not good for me so if this gives me the higher resolution for cropping, better AF, and more flexibility with the screen and charging options, it may very well be my one and only.
The blown out whites in the street portraits killed it for me. All I can see are the blown out whites. Your clearly an excellent photographer. Loved to see your work in film.
I do have the original Q and use it extensively. It is simply a brilliant, versatile and very useful camera and goes with me everywhere. I do sort of cheat a bit at times, though - depending on what I am shooting, I might, in addition, take a Leica M10 or M3 with a 50 mm Summilux or a Nikon D810 with longer lenses. One way or another the Q is always with me.
Great honest review Peter, looking forward to picking up my Q3 tomorrow. Shot Nikon, Fuji 7 canon and feel i just miss that go to camera with a flip screen & wider view after selling my fuji gear years ago, deffo love that crop feature :)
Great video ans great photos! for me having the Q2, the improvement I'm most expecting is in dynamic rage and low light sensitivity. Is a big improvement in the Q3.
I love your reviews and I love your photographs....just wonderful work !! I have a question on your use of the Q3-do you use the crop modes and if so which ones or all ? Thank you in advance
Love the video!!! I've had my heart set on a Q2 Monochrom, but after this video you completely have me considering this Q3! I just know when I buy it they will announce the Q3 monochrom 🤦🤦🤦
Wow your film making skills are sublime. The pacing, atmospheric sounds filtering in and out, beautifully shot talking head & you articulate so beautifully (lovely accent helps!) Subscribed. Leica Q3 on the way, hopefully doesn’t take months and months.
Thanks for watching. I wish I could take credit for the film making on this one. I have a guy called Adam do some of my videos now and again who has a video business called AJR visuals.
Paul, how about doing a follow up video on this after a years use… please. Especially after the software updates… has it fixed any of the issues it had from launch? I’m finally in a position to buy one… came close to buying one earlier this year but due to the waiting list, and the £150 price rise I didn’t buy it (I’d also spent the money on a new MacBook and X100VI), but with the price now £100 less I’m thinking of trading in all my gear and buying the Q3. 🏴 PS the tilt screen… it’s not designed to work for overhead shots: Is that right?
Not sure why I haven’t come across your videos before? A fellow Cumbrian Q2 monochrom shooter! Great video - does what it says on the tin - I may have to add the Q3 to my stable (might have to get a bigger stable). Off to binge your other content 👏👏
A wonderful video. I take photos with a Canon R5 with a few interchangeable lenses. I'm really considering whether I should buy the Q3. I was impressed by your portrait and architecture shots. Since I really value my 24-70 mm, I'm not sure whether I'll be happy with the 28 mm fixed focal length. The temptation to give it a try is great. Best wishes, Ralf
Hello Paul, I have fulfilled my wish and bought the Leica Q3 - amazing. The first pictures are a revelation, simply great. Light and shadow are more pronounced than with my Canon R5. The sharpness is also finer. The colors are indescribable. My first attempts with the camera are not easy but I am happy. Unfortunately there is no Q3 profile in Lightroom. How do you do that when developing? Best regards Ralf
Thanks so much for watching. The photo wall is my way of sorting through photos that stay as my portfolio and also what will be a book that I will be releasing. I use glue dots on the back of cheap 6x4 prints. However glue dots are a pain as the prints fall off the wall often.
Fantastic video. Super glad that I came across your channel. Brilliant work mate. While I wish it came in 40mm the only thing I really fancy is the reporter edition. Wanted to get it but figured that the 3 was right around the corner. Love the features in Q3. Cheers again and I’m going to sub
Great video Paul and fantastic portraiture. I have the QP which I love and going to stick with that. Just ordered a 28mm lens for my Leica II though and looking forward to doing some street photography and portraits with some Ilford FP4 plus later in the month
It all comes down to what you enjoy using the most. I think film can make you a better digital photographer and digital can make you a better film photographer
Sir thank you very much, Great video. Hello, I have a serious problem with the Leica Q3 I just bought. The camera's settings constantly change without my consent. For example, the setting I made to shoot only DNG changes to DNG&JPG. Then I set the ISO to 100 and it automatically switches to Auto ISO without my consent. This problem also occurs also in some other settings. I tried to solve the problem with my own means, but I couldn't. Maybe am I doing something wrong while adjusting the settings? Do I need to lock the settings I made? If so, how and how is locking done? I would appreciate it if you could guide me on how to solve my problem. With thanks,
Dear Sir, Thank you vey much for the absolutely superb video. You create Art. Also It is the only video that is mentioned why not 50mm lens. Which brings me to my question. I was just about to get the Q3 because I love photographing concerts and night Street photography with long far away buildings and small people scattered in, but also with the ability for portraits. And your portaits are spectacular. But Now that Q3 43 is out. may I please ask for your advise considering the above. And if it was you, having now to choose between the two what would be your choice. Kindly help me choose. And this black with low ISO is of such value to know. Thank you very much. and look eagerly looking for your reply
Such a cool review .. we’ll done, all I needed to know in order to make a decision Q2/Q3. All I need now is a decent printer or lab in order to get pictures on my walls again instead of on a hard drive
I own a q2m as well and it’s by far my most used camera. I think the improvements here are great but I’m sticking with what I have for now. Great video!
You are getting some nice shallow depth of field with those portraits considering the focal length. I`m currently sl2s ,246 and a CL with lenses. Thinking of hacking the CL compact set in for a Q .Thanks for the review .
Agreed 100% with your take on 28mm vs 50mm. I love my Q2 and i use it everywhere bc of its versatility. I don’t know if it would be used as a daily camera if it was 50mm
It’s tricky as I find myself with my back against the wall so many times even with a 28mm. I couldn’t just have a 50mm although I do love that focal length
I like the look of your portraits. Can you do a video on how you achieve the background separation with a 28-mm lens and how you get the strong tonalities despite shooting in what seems natural light.
Thanks for wonderful videos and the excellent commentary.. i want to see your thoughts how you approach the image in your mind to frame it and you process it to the print
It seems that the flip out screen has divided the Leica purists. I'm a relative newcomer to Leica (about 6 months) using the Q2M and I see it as an improvement. Moving to a 50mm would have been too restrictive but the sweet-spot for me would have been a 35mm focal length. Yes, I know that with so much information from the new sensor a crop is possible but a cropped 28mm looks different. The biggest surprise for me was that it's only £200 dearer than the Q2!
First thing I've seen with out and I really enjoyed it, terrific presentation and some absolutely beautiful photos! Only critique I might have is that you should perhaps include some more of those photos in the video even though it was great seeing that photo wall. I agree with wide angle portraits intimacy, they are far more interesting IMO and some of my better ones or the best ones have been with wider angle lenses. The Q3 is for sure on my list and might just be the next thing to get rather than another lens for my Lumix S1R. Hope you will get a lot more subscribers, you deserve it! One new with me at least 🙂
Great top level photography! 28mm is best for portraits. Perfect for including your subjects in their environment. Nice to see work that doesn't look like that of every one else...your subjects are unique to your environment. A gift!
Great video and this has me thinking it might be time for my FIRST Leica... curious what you use/do to print your black and white images you show in the wall shot in the video? Cheers.
You were a big influence on my purchasing a Leica Q2M, and it’s probably my favorite all time camera. As you know I mostly shoot B&W. I’m wondering if you held onto your Q2M? I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Q3M. Any thoughts on that? The Q3 is very tempting as a replacement for my entire Sony system. I love the simplicity of Q cameras, but the rich B&W tonal range I get from the Q2M, especially in low light, is priceless to me.
I have the Q2M. If someone offered me a Q3 if I traded my Q2M in and handed over an extra £200, I'd do it. The flip-out screen and extra resolution are worth that much. But if I was starting from scratch I think I'd be looking for a secondhand Q or Q2/Q2M than Q3.
@@paulreidphotography I only bought 6 months ago (used) and will use it until it falls apart. Love the simplicity and brilliant image quality and colour science

Too many choices is not good for me so if this gives me the higher resolution for cropping, better AF, and more flexibility with the screen and charging options, it may very well be my one and only.
It’s definitely the right camera for a lot of people this one
Well reasoned.
Another great video, for now I stay with my q2m, I don’t miss flip out screen. It’s the first time I See your tattoos!! That skull is sick 👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks so much. Yeah for monochrome shooters there is still a reason to stay with the Q2M
Thanks again Paul! I’m picking up my Q3 tomorrow - just in time :)
Awesome!!!
One of the best reviews out there.
Great honest review Peter, looking forward to picking up my Q3 tomorrow. Shot Nikon, Fuji 7 canon and feel i just miss that go to camera with a flip screen & wider view after selling my fuji gear years ago, deffo love that crop feature :)
So pleased you are fortunate enough to get your hands on one!! Have fun!!
Great video ans great photos! for me having the Q2, the improvement I'm most expecting is in dynamic rage and low light sensitivity. Is a big
improvement in the Q3.
I love your reviews and I love your photographs....just wonderful work !!
I have a question on your use of the Q3-do you use the crop modes and if so which ones or all ? Thank you in advance
You've sold it here mate, definatly upgrading my d-lux 7
Very good video! Just did the upgrade from the Q2 to the Q3 and it is so much better, even though I loved the Q2
Thanks so much for your kind comments! I really appreciate it
well, I might not have seen Henri Cartier-Bresson take photos, but I'm watching You, Paul ❤️ Thank You.
Thanks so much for your kind words
Beautiful photography. Thanks for your review.
Thanks for watching!
Love the video!!! I've had my heart set on a Q2 Monochrom, but after this video you completely have me considering this Q3! I just know when I buy it they will announce the Q3 monochrom 🤦🤦🤦
Still a bit away from a Q3 Monochrom yet I would think!!
Finally, a review of this camera with photos that don't completely suck.
Thanks so much for your comment! I really appreciate it
Wow your film making skills are sublime. The pacing, atmospheric sounds filtering in and out, beautifully shot talking head & you articulate so beautifully (lovely accent helps!)
Subscribed. Leica Q3 on the way, hopefully doesn’t take months and months.
as an aside, your work that you showed throughout is absolutely spectacular.
PS the tilt screen… it’s not designed to work for overhead shots: Is that right?
Great Video Paul... I really enjoyed our one on one classes as well. I trust you are well..
Hi Albert, glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah I enjoyed the sessions too!!
Great video, mate. Love your monochrome art!
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it
"The Only Camera I would ever need" until of course the Q4 😉
Nice video Paul 👍
Maybe not the only camera you want!!
Honestly, I loved your portraits like one million!! It made me want to go out and shoot
Thanks so much
Not sure why I haven’t come across your videos before? A fellow Cumbrian Q2 monochrom shooter! Great video - does what it says on the tin - I may have to add the Q3 to my stable (might have to get a bigger stable). Off to binge your other content 👏👏
Thanks so much for watching the videos!! Glad you found me
Great review . Thoughtful, minimalist like the camera and incredibly useful. Beautifully done.
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it
You are right with 28mm. I had only ever one little camera with 28mm for decades and never ever regretted it...
Thanks so much for watching the video. I really appreciate it
A wonderful video.
Thanks so much for watching! It’s a great all rounder the Q3
Got mine in order and waiting... Subbed to your channel. Loved the video and the nostalgia of this review.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing
As always... love your content! Go on...
Thanks so much
I have been using the Q-P and Q2-M for a few years. I think I will hold off until there is an upgrade on the Q lens. Thanks for the informative video.
Thanks so much for watching. I’d also be happy with your camera combo.
Really nice review. I suspect I’ll have one in hand by end of year.
Can you describe your photo wall? How you constructed and use it?
Thanks so much for watching. The photo wall is my way of sorting through photos that stay as my portfolio and also what will be a book that I will be releasing. I use glue dots on the back of cheap 6x4 prints. However glue dots are a pain as the prints fall off the wall often.
Fantastic video. Super glad that I came across your channel. Brilliant work mate. While I wish it came in 40mm the only thing I really fancy is the reporter edition. Wanted to get it but figured that the 3 was right around the corner. Love the features in Q3. Cheers again and I’m going to sub
I still think the Q and Q2 are incredible cameras too. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing
Beautiful photos. Great video. Thank you!
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching
With thanks,
Ahhhh man! I’m sorry. I never came across that problem and I only had the camera to test for about 4 months
Thank you for a great video with thoughtful ideas and reflections.
Thanks so much
Dear Sir, Thank you vey much for the absolutely superb video.
If you favour portraits then 43! It will make them easier. If it’s street the 28 is easier
Such a cool review .. we’ll done, all I needed to know in order to make a decision Q2/Q3. All I need now is a decent printer or lab in order to get pictures on my walls again instead of on a hard drive
So glad you enjoyed the video
Merci pour vos vidéos, vos photos sont sublimes!
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it
When I heard that the Q3 was realized I was glad I waited on getting the Q2. The Q3 is now on the purchase list.
It’s hit strides now that really nobody could need more. Except maybe a different focal length.
What a fantastic video, I really love your content, just got email telling me my back ordered Q3 was on its way, should have it tomorrow….
Fantastic!!! You will love it!
I own a q2m as well and it’s by far my most used camera. I think the improvements here are great but I’m sticking with what I have for now. Great video!
Me too
agreed, 60 megapixels alone would change my work flow and computer set up.
You are getting some nice shallow depth of field with those portraits considering the focal length. I`m currently sl2s ,246 and a CL with lenses. Thinking of hacking the CL compact set in for a Q .Thanks for the review .
Yeah at 1.7 you can get some really great shallow depth of field for separation
After this amazing review, I am sure I will preorder Q3 😍
Great review! I really loved the pacing of it.
Thanks so much
Agreed 100% with your take on 28mm vs 50mm.
Thanks so much! Noted for future videos
Thanks for wonderful videos and the excellent commentary.. i want to see your thoughts how you approach the image in your mind to frame it and you process it to the print
Thanks so much for watching. I will be doing a lot more hands on going through my process on future videos
Yeah I mean if you were buying now then the Q3 would be the one to get
Same.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing. I hope to make some more videos that you will enjoy
Looking forward to it 🙂
Great top level photography! 28mm is best for portraits. Perfect for including your subjects in their environment. Nice to see work that doesn't look like that of every one else...your subjects are unique to your environment. A gift!
Thanks so much! Very kind comment and I appreciate it
Nice video and photos as always. I wish you showed us some color photos as well, It is the Q3 afterall
Yeah I know what you mean although I don’t shoot much colour at all
Nice job Paul! Great review!
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it
Great video and this has me thinking it might be time for my FIRST Leica... curious what you use/do to print your black and white images you show in the wall shot in the video? Cheers.
Those prints are just cheap photo prints from photobox
Loving your images!
Thanks so much!
Beautiful review. Beautiful camera. Photography 👌🏽☀️
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it
You were a big influence on my purchasing a Leica Q2M, and it’s probably my favorite all time camera.
The Q3 in no way replaces the Q2M. The Q2M can not be replaced
@@paulreidphotography "The Q2M can not be replaced" - not even by a Q3M (as @wilfredobenitez7275 hints at)??? :^)
Great video, thanks, I've all my gear at Fuji, maybe I'll would switch for the Q3, a beautiful camera.
Thanks so much. Fuji has its place. I still use a Fuji XE4 for telephoto type shots
I hear you!!! I do find that I don’t shoot high iso as much as I think I do sometimes
I own the Q (1) and love it, if I upgrade it will be the Q2 although I feel 24mp sensor does it for me
My friend uses a Q and swears by it!
@@paulreidphotography I only bought 6 months ago (used) and will use it until it falls apart. Love the simplicity and brilliant image quality and colour science
I love the T.Stout poster!
Thanks so much! I’d love the Lost one but is costs a fortune
Very well presented! A great camera meets a great photographer! Thanks very much!
Thanks so much for your kind words
This is a wonderful and informative review. I enjoy your presentation style and passion for this craft. Thank you (new subscriber).
Thank you for this - it's decision time coming up soon for me
I did it!
Hi Paul subscribed as soon as I heard the accent! Ex Carlisle lad living in Australia. Have been thinking really hard about selling all my olympus gear and getting this camera…
It’s a fantastic camera but actually so are all the Q cameras. Even the first one.
