I bought the M10M and then sold the Q2M. I have added the M11M, however I still grab the M10M more often. Something about the files is still more appealing when I make prints.
Paul, I am excited! I routinely replay the videos when I need some inspiration. With the diversity of lens formats, I expect to gain even more inspiration. My go to is the 28mm but I also use 35 and 50mm, so I look forward to seeing how you use these formats. I also have the TTArtisan 28mm, it will be interesting to see your results from this lens. Also, it would be very useful if you could label the images in the video to indicate the lens used for the image.
Paul, your photography transcends any given camera. Yes, I bought a Q2M in part because of your videos. But I never thought of it as a sales job or a sacred relationship. It was inspiration, which is a kind of gift you have given your viewers. So I look forward to learning from your journey with the M10M. Cheers!
Perfectly explained, Paul. Evolution is essentially for us all and I for one am much more interested in what you have to teach me than the specific tools you use. Looking forward to seeing what the next stage in your journey looks like. I’m sure your Q2M crew will get it, even if some are a little upset right now. Journey on! 😊
@ it’s personal preference I think. I’ve tried every digital M except the M240 and it always comes down to nothing being even close to the analog M experience. The Q2M gives me a whole different experience altogether and sometimes it’s nice not to think when shooting.
@@tonyferrell3456 Thanks Tony! You'll be pleased to learn that I'm planning on weekly videos from Jan 2025 onward. I really appreciate you saying that mate
Dear Paul, I am extremely excited! All the reasons you have listed that led to the Q2m >> M10 mo. switch are the same reasons why I never will buy one! And even if it were different: you are and will remain an excellent photographer and person, but your photography has taken things to the next level! The Q2 is a top-notch device, everything that was true in this context yesterday is still true today. It is not better or worse, it is simply different. I am happy for you and your new camera, because it will release a great deal of inspiration and creativity! Your video is great, because luckily it has not become a justification. Rather, the impulse is to rethink whether what we are using is actually the right thing and suits us. Thank you very much for that! Best regards, Dirk
Thank you for sharing your experiences and reason for switching (although you don’t owe us the explanation). You are an amazing photographer who has ‘outgrown’ the Q2M so I’m excited to see more photographs and stories from you with the new setup. I agree with re-setting the muscle memory when we switch camera, I had the same (still adjusting) when I added Nikon Zf to my XT2. I thought it would be more straight forward but found it much heavier than XT2 that I have to re-adjust.
Your channel was one of the reasons I felt reassured about buying my Q2M this year, and I haven't been disappointed. I absolutely love it and it does what I want it to do. Like you though, if/when I evolve and my needs change then so might my camera choice. I'm looking forward to seeing your development with the M10 and still hoping to make one of your workshops, perhaps next year.
I made the same switch a while back. I decided on the voigtlander 35mm 1.4 classic as I often cropped my Q2M files a little. I'm interested to hear what lens you pair with your M10M to give you the Q2M look you will be missing.
Paul, your photos are inspiring and I am sure they will contouring be so. I almost purchased a Q2M for the same reasons you highlighted, including lower price to buy but I did decided to continue down the M path since I have numerous M cameras and lenses to go with. It is very thoughtful of you to give your reasons for the change, but I sure don't feel it necessary to! Keep doing what you do!!!
Hey Paul, I did the exact opposite because of my eyesight becoming less accurate with aging unfortunately. I sold all my M Gear accumulated over the years approx 6 years ago and was waiting for a new spark. It came with the Q2M and is much easier for me as I do not have to worry too much about focus. Yes it can still miss it and yes you can use hyperfocal wirh M systems. Of course I do regret a little bit the various lenses (I had a M7 and M9-P) but the simplicity of one camera is so nice. In fact, you have Pros and Cons in every scenario, the most important is that you enjoy the result using your gear... even if you were indeed a highly convinced "ambassador" of the Q2M through your videos on YT ;-) All the best with your new setup. Cheers
Paul, great to hear the thought process into your decision. I think we all struggle with our gear and finding the right mix and while you've sort of been the unofficial Q2M ambassador with your amazing work, I guess I shouldn't be surprised some people would take your decision personally. RUclips has created a monster! Anyway, can't wait to see your progression with the M10M and the multitude of lenses. I had 5 M mount lenses at one point for my M11 and pared down to 3 and sometimes that is too much stress for me when deciding what to take out. That is one advantage with any Q is that the decision has already been made for you. But wait, there is the Q3 43 now!!!
Hello Paul, I can understand your decision completely. Now you have the opportunity to try out different lenses and their looks. I was never a fan of wide-angle lenses, but I wanted to try it out. My Pentax K3III takes great pictures and I like them much better than the K3II, but neither are full format, they have a factor of 1.5. Now I have bought a used Leica SL2-S in Wetzlar and have my Pentax 31mm 1.8 and my 77mm 1.8 on the Leica brick. Simply great. The 77mm on the Leica is awesome and the pictures almost have a 3D effect up to aperture 2.8. Have fun taking photos. Sorry for the Google English and greetings from Germany
I very much understand the desire to use a digital M camera body. It was the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH that originally prompted me to buy into the Leica M system, in April 2018, starting with a pre-owned Summilux and a new M10. Six year and six months later, that same lens remains my favorite. A Q-series camera can shoot in cropped mode, but a Q’s lens cannot fake what a Summilux-M 50mm ASPH can do. I added a pre-owned M Type 246 Monochrom, while my M10 was down for repair, after a mishap. I could, probably, enjoy using a Q-series camera, but cannot justify the expense, for what would be a supplemental, niche camera. If I need AF, I will use one of my older DSLRs.
Great video as always. As an M10M shooter, look forward seeing your progress with the camera. Its also one of the most beautiful M bodies in my opinion, maybe only second to the new M11-D :)
Say, because of you and Ben Staley I bought the Q2M, now both of you got rid of it (I think his was the Q2) I can't ever see you folks in the eyes again 😂😂😂😂😂 Congratulations with your M10M, its going to do wonderful things in your hands im sure! And thanks for your time, I really enjoy your videos!
Thanks for this, Paul. I have the Q2 Monochrom, and I don't expect to replace it, as I shoot Nikon for my client work. But I'm interested in what you said about the Q2M's 'flat' files. I've never really understood this - is it an issue with the sensor itself, or the way Adobe 'develops' the raw files? Do you have a video where you go into this? In any case, it seems I always need to boost contrast and clarity to get the best from my Q2M. What did you do?
The flat files aren’t really a problem as you can easily make a preset that puts a curve on it to create contrast. However I got so used to those flat files I started to like them. I’d rather start from scratch than have someone decide what contrast is in my RAW. I would always add contrast in post with contrast, blacks and whites, and the clarity tool
I`ve used Leica M (film) since the eighties but only in the last few years started to use a 246. I use that alongside a digital CL and SL2s. I was interested in what you were saying because I was thinking of a Q2M as a supplement to the 246. I`ve previously used Richo GR`s so am familiar with the 28fl on the street. You`ve made some good points.
You inspired me to get the Q2M and I sold my M9 Monochrom which I probably should have kept, nonetheless I remain extremely happy with the ease of use, and amazing images I’m getting from the Q2M. Recently I picked up a used Leica M8, and loving having that camera back in my kit. It’s a klonker but the images are beautifully unique, and I can use my M lenses once again. I tested the M10 Monochrom but the files were no different to my eye than what my Sony A7R3 produces converted to B&W so it was a no go for me. We all use what works for us. I look forward to seeing more of your photography.
The Q2M will of course always hold a special place in my heart! I guess I’ve put more time in with it over the last 4 years than most. Nearly every day at times. I would have loved to have kept it but chapters sometimes end for new ones to begin. I aim to be shooting half digital and half film. I just wanted to go from the M6 to a more similar experience in digital.
I have discovered something thanks to a subscriber. The files have a tone curve baked in on Adobe! One click and the files start the same as a Q2M file.
Paul, you have no need to apologize or explain that you swapped from using a Q2 Monochrom to an M10 Monochrom. You never acted as a Leica salesperson. Even if someone purchased a Q2 Monochrom based on viewing your photographs, they got a fantastic camera, and thus don’t have any reason to gripe to you. I had a Q2M and regret selling it. Nevertheless, I have an M11 Monochrom, but still miss the feel of the Q2M (I also have a digital CL, M11, and SL2). I recently picked up a Q3 43, and love it. If I was younger, I’d acquire photo kit at a much slower rate. However, I’m far along the back 9 of life, and don’t want to wait to experience cameras I’d like to use.
@ I sometimes think that Leica Wetzlar should name their next building on the campus after me. I purchase most of my Leica kit from Leica Store Miami, and they said several of their customers have far more lenses and cameras than I do. I don’t feel so guilty anymore. I just ordered a pre-owned Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 16 mm - 35 mm lens. It’ll be a great addition for my CL and SL2.
I loved your beautiful Q2M environmental portraits Paul, best of luck with the new camera. I could never go back to a manual focus only camera, but I’m sure you’ll make excellent photos with it. maybe what you really want is a Q3 43M, perhaps in another year or so. :)
I have no idea how I will be with this camera as it takes at least a year to really familiarise myself with a camera. I’m hoping that I get good with it quick
I had a Q2M and Q2 Reporter and sold both to purchase an M11M and an M11-P. I simply prefer the manual experience. Frankly it shocks me that I have given up autofocus for manual focus, especially when I have serious vision problems. The manual process makes me enjoy photography more.
It makes total sense for you! For me, 28mm is my favourite focal length (I often carry a Ricoh GRIII as well) and the autofocus and weather resistance of the Q2M, among other things, is why I absolutely had to have it. However I found its distance and dof scales useless . Did you look at Pentax?
Having owned a Q2M and an M10M side by side for a year, I sold the former in early September. The simplicity and ease of use, the ability to see in the dark, and the macro function were tough to say goodbye to, but in reality I struggled with the 28mm focal length as a do everything lens. Other focal lengths called to me, hence the addition of an M body. Then I found myself carry both bodies. The flexibility of having multiple focal lengths for a single body outweighed the conveniences of the Q2M. It was, as in your case, a personal choice. What you don't say here is that as a professional you have different criteria than hobbyists. A camera is a tool, albeit an expensive one. I would argue that when a repair is eventually needed, the M10M will be easier and faster to service than the Q2M. Time out of your hands = lost income. I have read that the Q2M is likely to be the last monochrom Q variant. The Q3's hybrid autofocus system is dependent on having a Bayer filter, which is excluded from monochrom sensors. So to those who are disappointed that Paul moved on to the M10M, you may just have your hands on an all time classic.
@@paulreidphotography Didn`t now that. Although I have two Leica AF bodies I`m far from impressed with their AF systems. If the Q2m is even slower that would be a step too far for me.
I have the Q2M but understand the move to the M10 Monochrom. I really do not have the extra $$$ it would take me to move to M series. As a professional photographer and it becomes a business expense and a business tool, then it all makes sense. But I will enjoy the Q2M for a long time to come. Unfortunately, I do not have any Leica lenses in my inventory that would facilitate any move to the M system. I do find the limitation of the Q2M makes me more creative.
@@paulreidphotography A good photographer friend once said that her camera bag with all those lenses in it, was her "insecurity bag"! having multiple lenses going out to shoot, actually can detract from the experience. You are always wondering about what lens is best and not how can I best compose with the lens on the camera. The Q2M just makes me smile.
Having been previously astounded, and now the steam is no longer coming out of my ears…….I now see exactly what you mean.😱 As a Q2 Reporter and Q2M owner, I’m now thinking of the Q3/43 alongside my Q2, and trading my Q2M for an M10 M! I’m not copying you………honest Paul!!!😂😂😂
Nice walkthrough of your gear decision. It's all about the images, isn't it, not the camera. But it's always great if you can leverage lenses you already have. Will be cool to see how the M6 and M10M cross-pollinate and influence your portraits.
People are stupid if they are buying because of you or anyone. Or any other camera for that matter. I sold my Q2M not because I didn't love it but because my wife does not have the love I do for black and white and hated that's all I aver had on me. I sold it and got the Q2 as a compromise. I like the mono better than converting so now contemplating buying again or just getting the M11 mono. Q2 for the family stuff and the M11M for me. I love my M6 as well but can't justify film these days and my own processing. Can't do the lab stuff. Well that and the 34 year old m6 deserves to just kick it on the shelf of fame!! Looking forward to using my V4 cron on the M11! May have to down res LOL
I went through a similar evolution. Ultimately I wanted focal length versatility more than autofocus and couldn't afford to have both cameras. And even though I like 28, there are often situations where I would go for something like the 28 Elmarit to keep to a smaller setup.
I had the Q2 and now awaiting arrival of my Q3, having said that, I am astounded by the fact that anyone would be upset because you have changed cameras. They need to get a life!
I did! I do! I’m still printing work from that camera as platinum palladium prints. I have a book to publish from this whole period of my photography. The Q2M will live on
Hi Paul, you say the raw files of the m10 have more contrast than the Q2 but how do the jpegs of the m10 compare to the raw files of the m10? I’m considering one.
I started with the Q2M and ended up with the M11. Hated it. Now I use a mirrorless and lust after a Q2M! 😂 I remember the lag between pressing the shutter and it taking a picture when on continuous mode being a real problem for me though
There are a lot of us who don’t really give a damn what camera you choose to use. Photos are what counts and some of the photographic greats of the past used cameras that were primative by modern standards. Thread-mount Leicas with tiny optical viewfinders and separate rangefinder window come to mind.
I think after using film again I realised that as much as I liked using a Leica there’s more to it than just super high def image quality. In the end, I just want to swap my lenses between film and digital.
People are angry? They need to get a life. You don't need to appease these idiots. I got a Leica Q2 Monochrom because of your recommendation and I couldn't be happier. No plans to sell even though I have seen tons of comparisons to others where it is almost impossible to tell the difference but...so what? People shouldn't get worked up about this. I think there is a direct correlation between people who rant about a given camera and them taking crappy pictures.
The Q2M will live on in the platinum prints I’m printing right now. In the book I aim to publish next year. It’s like music! I’m on my second album and it will be slightly different
I think the word 'familiar' is the key. the Q cameras are possibly more intuitive to operate and the M10 -M11 cameras add the manual focus and perspective control involved with the various focal length lenses available. This creates a bit of pre planning need in advance of going out photographing.
I shoot with a Fuji X-Pro3 which has an optical and electronic viewfinder, so I can do either zone focus or auto. I shoot with Fuji 35mm 1.4 lens, Fuji 35mm f2 (weather sealed) lens, and Fuji 23mm f2 (weather sealed). Also have a Sigma 56mm 1.4 lens, but it doesn’t have an aperture ring (have to use a dial to change aperture in camera). The X-Pro3 features 26.1 MP, and the SOOC jpegs are great (I use the Acros monochrome film recipe with adjusted contrast). I love the 50mm focus (which is what my 35mm lenses are on APSC). Fuji is rumored to produce an X-Pro4 in 2025. I like the Leica M10 Mono, but my reservations include: Leica repairs can take months if something goes wrong, Leica costs a fortune, no weather sealing, Leica glass is a fortune (thank God for TT Artisan and related lenses), zone focusing can be hard in some situations. But then, I have not held nor shot with an M camera. I’m afraid if I visit my camera shop and play with the floor model, all my reservations might evaporate.
I must confess that I'm not free from having feelings about you switching to the M10m, or better said: abandoning the Q2m. But that's probably because I treat my cameras almost as children and luckily never had to sell one to get another. So I mostly feel sorry for the two of you.
I can’t say I’m not sad myself to let the Q2M go! But I had to think hard as to what was going to help me change. What was going to compliment my M6 and my journey with film. And that’s the decision I made. I don’t regret it yet!
Great post and I love your work! Re the M experience - So slightly off topic - I'm very conflicted about my Ms. My first was the Leica M6, which predictably was the gateway to the M11. I use both extensively and I love the rangefinder experience. My problem is that I love it way more with film than digital. I"m feeling more and more like I want that EVF for my digital work, it feels like it's the right fit. For me the rangefinder enhances shooting with film, I couldn't imagine using anything else, but it is starting to feel like a limitation with digital. So it's not that I don't get the advantage of the RF, it's that I also get the advantage of an EVF for digital. I'd love to hear your thoughts, and of course that of others, on this. (I'm considering trading the M11 for the new Q3 43)
For all I know down the line I will feel the same. Right now I’m just getting to grips with the M10M. I use the M6 a lot and I will continue to do so. I think right now I just want one system with lenses that interchange across them all.
@@paulreidphotography yes that's completely inline with your wisdom of constantly evolving. Love it. Philosophically it's like the photos we make - thinking there's permanence there but all I see is what's in memory, and your thinking has me considering that that to is constantly evolving. Except that maybe the 6 is the best camera ever made lol.
I bought the second generation M Monochrom back in 2015. Waited for ages for it to arrive, so excited. It lasted a month. So disappointed with the files and it arriving as a dust magnet. Far, far preferred my M4 or M6, 7 or MP with a selection of favourite films. Also, moved back from CL and TL2 and Sony A7R3 to Canon 5D and 5Dii. Now have beautiful colour that needs so little pp AND wonderful monochrome images plus massive range of vintage and modern lenses. Won’t be changing again!
5D Mkii still produces incredible images even with the cheap 50mm 1.8! For me I just want a similar experience with digital as I do the M6! Or at least as close to
Interestingly M10Ms seems to have rising price. M10 family is considered as master piece of reliability in oposite to M11 (at least rumors based reputation), which might be the cause. While waiting for M10M to be below 4kEuro, I've grabbed new Pentax M3 MarkIII Mono with feeling of supporting niche maker.
Paul - your negative element is because they see your channel as a Q2M channel, not a / the Paul Reid channel. Cameras can't speak for themselves, it is the photographer that makes them speak and some even make them sing!
I shoot a gfx50r and convert to monochrome exclusively. I'm glad I'm not invested in your camera choices! Good luck with the new gear, it's tough adapting to a new camera.
Like you I sold my Q2M replacing with the M11M which the Q2M fundednot because I disliked the Q2M but as I had invested in my M lenses I wanted the versatility of different focal lengths & the quality was higher. The Q2M is an excellent camera
Your whole channel is about development as a photographer so it seems strange that people should criticise you for your own development. Looking forward to whatever comes next!
Why do people get angry because you changed cameras, it’s your livelihood and your choice. Today I’ve been walking the streets of Bangkok, 33c. Even though I regularly shoot photos in Bangkok you never know what you will encounter. So I was carrying a sling bag, a Q2, a CL 35mm and 65mm lens. As I walked past the Leica store I thought wouldn’t this be a lot easier with a M and 2 or 3 small lenses. It’s obvious to me why you made the change
What most people don't get (before they get the M system), is that shooting a rangefinder is very different than an EVF camera. If you are used to having all the info in the EVF - including that you also can see if you exposure is right instantly - a M camera is very challenging to use. You learn how to focus fairly quick. But you will have more wrong exposed images than before. Your compositions will not be as sharp, since you are not seeing exactly what the sensor see. So a bit cropping will often be necessary. You can of course use the rear screen. But then you could just use another mirrorless camera. Look at so many of the Leica M RUclipsrs. They buy the M11, make a lot of videos about it. And still use the rear screen for composing. A bit strange, since there are so many other cameras that would be better in that regard. And much cheaper - even lighter with better ergonomics. Never understood this. But hey if they have the money and thinks an M11 will make their life fun, fine by me. I have a M10, Q and SL. Love the M10 and the sensors rendering. But for most work the Q and SL system is so much better and easier to work with. I love the Leica camera line. But I will also say that my images are not better than if I had a Nikon Zf or Fuji xpro. Maybe the Zf actually is the most interesting camera these days.
I found that LR has a preset tone curve for the M10-M, taking it back to linear flattens the image considerably. They are heavy, which I guess is why the new M11 in black is aluminium. I use a 35mm summicron and can walk around all day with it, but a 50mm summilux is too heavy to carry for more than a few hours on a wrist strap (I sold the summilux, which I sort of regret...).
That’s interesting about the flattening and if that’s the case I’d actually prefer to flatten it so I can treat the files the same as I did the Q2M. Otherwise I’m having to re-learn my editing process
This is a game changer! Once that tone curve is gone it’s back to the flat files I’m used to! Thanks so much mate! This really helps as now I don’t have to change the way I edit! Wonderful
@@paulreidphotography Cheers! It took me a while to realise that a curve was applied, I get why but it takes away one of the advantages of the camera - the subtle tonal gradation!
I have heard it said that the Q is the "gateway drug" to the M system. When I saw a prior episode of yours about your Q2 and your M6, I thought: "I'm surprised he didn't he get a digital M?"
I bought a M10 Monochrome because I wanted optionality of lenses. I like 21MM and 28MM. I couldn’t get that with a Q2M. I bought a camera for my needs and that’s how people should buy a camera.
@@martinsmyth5580 I’m hoping Leica will soon revise the APO-Summicron-M 50 to include the closer focusing capability they added to the Summilux-M 35 FLE II (I have the FLE I and love it; but I wish I had the FLE II), new Summilux-M 50 (a phenomenal lens), and the APO-Summicron-M 35 (my favorite and most versatile Leica lens). If it takes a bit longer to release the latter, that’s ok, because my wallet needs a rest!
@@paulreidphotography The new APO-Summicron-M 35 is nearly optically perfect. It won’t provide “vintage character”, but it’s a great lens. If you use the rear LCD screen of the VisoFlex2, when your subject is in focus, it’s unmistakable (the focus pops). I wish these lenses weren’t so expensive, but long after the sting of the price has abated, the joy of using the lens keeps growing. The close-focusing capability of that lens allows you to tell several different stories of a subject with one lens, without the need to crop for each rendering. I’ll send you a trite example of this with three photos I took when I was in Freiburg Germany this past June.
Paul, let me ask you something, both are amazing cameras, I am Fuji I don’t own Leica cameras, but is not about how to edit the B&W as well, you do a great job and amazing images, but you have editing style, hope you understood my question.
The editing style I kind of just fell into. What looked right in my eyes. I guess the tricky thing now is making sure I don’t edit the same way and get a totally different look to my images.
Paul - I love your videos but I love your images even more. I guess I never really paid attention enough to realize you were even using a Q2 before. I just like the outcome you get. To me a camera is a camera - Find something that feels good to you. I do shoot the M10M and I LOVE it. Feels so good in my hand - I enjoy the smaller lenses - I can take it anywhere. And in my eyes the true monochrome sensor is the way to go if you are shooting black and white.
The Q2 is a compact camera, all be it a very good one. Its easy to use and can yield great results. The M10 is a proper camera. But when all said and done its no ones business. Doesn't matter how you get there, just get there..
That’s my point, the Q is not a small system, especially when you need to add grip enhancements. My M with the variety of compact lens lenses available is much more discrete and easy to carry. You give up macro, weather sealing and auto focus. Everything is a trade off.
For someone to say that they have been misled because you don’t have that same camera anymore that’s a little bit disturbing to be perfectly honest It goes to show how much weight your word carries but in reality that’s outrageous
I am not surprised at all. As fine a camera that the Qs are they are limited due to the fixed lens. Sooner or later you feel the restriction and want something more versatile and flexible.
Oh my, people are weird. Getting bent over a camera somebody else uses. Oy!. I have an old Q that I bought this summer and enjoy, it does live up to the hype and 24MP is plenty of pixels for anybody with modern SW.. I still love my Olympus cameras, and frankly, my Ricoh GRiiix beats the Shxt out of Leica in high contrast B&W, IMO. But then I love the Daido Moriyama aesthetic…I use my iPhone too! What a barbarian! Whatever floats your boat, there is no correct way to do photography with any camera.
Agree with you 100%. To back that up I’ve just sold my M10 after owning it for years because my GR IIIx produces images that are equal but with less editing for my B/W work. I’ve used both digital & film Leica’s & Ricoh’s for decades so I’m certainly not biased but I do laugh at how some get so irked at other people’s camera choice. 😆 They’re just tools, so use whatever you need or fancy to help your creative eye flourish. 😁👍
It goes past me how people get upset about changing cameras.... That said I went from a bridge camera in 2012 to MFT, APS-C, Full frame cameras by 2020 and nowadays I am focussed on smaller camera bodies with small manual focus lenses and af lenses. I don't care much about the latest tech in cameras anymore. Camera is a tool :)
Anyone that knows anything knows that for years the Q has been known as the gateway to an M. Some have the luxury of having both others not so much, doesn’t make one better than the other when it comes to one’s ability to tell stories. Focus on the art people not the gear. Further more you will never be Paul Reid by having the camera he uses. Be you with what you have and don’t take it so personal when an artist decides to tell his journey and it doesn’t match up with yours because he is deciding to do something different. Encourage that and celebrate that because we are all unique in our way.
Hi. I am using the M10M for years now and love it. Yes ,I still have to be careful when I am outside in the sun as it has the tendancy to burn out the photos in the sun, so I usually work with EC -3 to -7. and always an arrow on the left side of the circle in the viewfinder so It is underexposed. If neede I also use a red or yellow filter. I had the M9M, the 246, But no doubt the M10M is the best. camera. I cant comment on the M11M. As to the Q2M , I can't stand the the viewfinder ( I am so used to the simple optical system. ) As I wrote to you before /your photos are lovely but I always found your portrait faces too bright almost burned out. From what I see now I think there is a great change and the faces are not as white. I also did not like the size ( too small and too light ) of the Q2M and as said the VF w2hich pushed me to take photos whatching the screen instead of the VF. I like the manual focusing but as I am getting old ( 77) I guess I will sometime have to decided upon an autofocus ( eye sight} camera. I also shoot alot of Jpg as I love contrasty, black and sharp photos saying that the raw files are also beautiful Congratulation I honestly think you did right . Danny
Just listening to the start of this video and your not responsible for other peoples insecurities and childish complaining about you getting rid of the Q2M people need to think for themselves and grow up by the way Paul great work 👍🇮🇪
Not in the position to buy either. Financially. But if I did have to make the choice ? Probably go with the Q. Definitely see the draw with the M’s though. Having own a Fuji GW670iii I love the simplicity and lack of features.
The Leica Police will come for you for using anything other than Leica glass 😅. Hope you enjoy your new camera, cant wait for more results, cause thats what Im interested in; photography, who cares about the gear someone uses (apparently everyone😂)
You could shoot with a Kodak Instamatic and produce beautiful images! Re the weight, there are plenty of much lighter f2 m-mount lens available at all price points. A light lens definitely adds to the joy of shooting an M 👍
I was a pro! Age and health had me retired. As a pro, I Never could have afforded Leica digital! Reliability, time needed for services or adjustments! A no! Someone attended a Magnum workshop and the Magnum guy seeing his digital Leica said, "No pro can afford that camera!".I use Leica-M film boxes..M6 and favorite M3. 35mm, 50mm and a 135mm! That's it! Usually use 50mm. Sad you need to apologize to viewers.. Internet has no shame! I posted not bothering to repair a Nikon-F.. I bought a well used F3! I received tons of hate! My F's have been hard used since 1971! I can only imagine what you were showered with! Enjoy the M10 mono.
I don't follow your channel because of your chosen camera or whether you shoot digital or film, I follow you because of your style and the images you produce, so to me the camera is irrelevant. My perception of the M10 images shown are that they are perhaps a little more 'grainy' and have a wider tonal range, more grays! Would be interested in your take on this? Always look forward to your videos! Thanks.😀
@@ruthlobner8114 Theres an extremely heavy lens profile that the camera installs into the raw file in a way that you cant turn off in lightroom. I found a way you can turn it off in other raw editing software but then the image looks a bit ugly. The biggest problem with the lens prophile is that in higher ISO (which this camera should be great for) you get this strange warped noise pattern. I have seen this issue in a lot of monochrom cameras but if you turn off the lens profile it fixes the problem which is what I do for the m10 monochrom. but you cant easily do that for the Q2 monochrom. another side problem was there was a bit of dynamic range brick wall with the Q2 monochrom. The q2 monochrom doesnt have 1.2 meter marker on the lense. which is annoying but more of a minor issue. My leica M10 monochrom doesnt have any of these issues. Its a brillient camera. It has a life sentence with me.
Well…my 70th birthday is this Thursday (Halloween), the same day I leave for my “Fine Art Photography” Exhibition in Yokohama…and then I see this video. As I’m an Enthusiast Photographer shooting dedicated BNW with the Q2 Monochrom AND on a fixed-income retirement pension…I simply do not have the option to invest in an M10 Monochrom plus multiple lenses. Oh well…it appears it’s time to wish you the best as you push forward on your Photography Journey. Happy Birthday, not…
Dave the Q2M is still the camera you need for what you are doing. You wouldn’t be able to get those incredible macro shots for a start off with an M10M. Not only is there no macro function, the files have not got the same detail as the Q2M. My direction is going more towards portraits and shooting film alongside a digital monochrome camera. You’re still using the right camera. I will miss the Q2M
@ of course! You thinking upgrading already. why you downgrade to m11m? Return it and get the m11m. Theres no way you want that lower grade m10m. Always go for the top Prize! M11m is so advance you can even see the future!
I don't get it at all, as your choice is your choice, at the same time I don't why people follow RUclipsrs every gear / brand swaps. It isn't the camera, it's how you use it ....A Leica doesn't make you a better photograper if you have no skill in the first place. I have an M6 Titanium with a Voightlander 35mm Color Skopar f2.5 and a 7 Artisans 28mm f5.6, but I prefer my EOS1 if shooting film because the rangefinder experience doesn't do anything for me. I'd prefer a digital Leica, but
holy crap. the day I get mad because someone else sold something that I bought. just go ahead and smack me in the face, because I've completely lost the plot.
Paul, I have watched all your videos and enjoyed them - thanks. I was convinced that the Q2M might be the camera for me, partly because over the time you had convinced me that while the investment would be considerable, the camera’s capability was as good as any other. However, you are now telling me that theQ2 M has limitations that can only be resolved by upgrading to a different camera. Either your endorsement of the Q2M was misplaced -or you are saying, that to be a serious photographer - interchangeable lenses are the way to go. It appears that investment in the Q2M would be folly - because if your photography advances - the Q2 M will cease to serve your need. I am confused and disappointed, but worse the news, however you dress it up means your credibility and advice is diminished. But thanks again for your channel so far.
Doesn’t mean any of this at all. It means he is on a journey of exploration and you should be too. If you’re too focused on gear and not the art then your journey is misplaced.
@@xiiiconcepts Thank you for your advice. Paul has been a champion of fixed lens cameras. I was influenced by his recommendation, but all the time it would appear that Paul's enthusiasm was misplaced, and he has decided that for his photography to progress, he needs an interchangeable lens set up. I have a fixed lese Camera, and will not now be able to look at Paul's work in the same way. It is his decision, but remains disappointing, however, I am grateful that he has revealed his findings before I spent a lot of money on another fixed lens camera. I should say, that I am a novice photographer and watched Paul's channel to learn and be guided - as I might of expected had I attended any of his workshops.
But your journey doesn’t have to mimic another’s journey. Find your own voice and vision through creating art with what you have and when you feel it no longer serves a purpose you can either evolve or stick it out and be happy with what you have to tell your stories. It’s the artist journey that should dictate what works for ”you” not me, not Paul, but you. Say you love black and white landscapes and occasional environmental portraits whilst having the ability to autofocus. Then you cannot get much better than the Q2M. Let’s say you love traditional portraits using standard lens such as a50mm and ability to be flexible with telling your stories with different lenses with different characteristics. Then you will want to look at an interchangeable lens monochrome. Everyone’s journey and likes and dislikes are so different that you are taking this too personal on a photographer you admired for his artistry or the camera he uses? Whose idea is misplaced ?
Let’s face it. I never needed to change. But shooting more and more on film I just wanted a similar experience across film and digital. I have produced a body of work with the q2M and platinum prints that will last a thousand years. Long after any of this even matters. That’s what’s important. The photography I’ve made should be endorsement enough. It’s a new chapter for me. Those limitations that we all know are there with any fixed lens camera are what focussed me for years. You could shoot with 28mm for the rest of your life and still find further inspiration. But change inevitably changes approach and changes the outcome. I want that change for future work.
I bought the M10M and then sold the Q2M. I have added the M11M, however I still grab the M10M more often. Something about the files is still more appealing when I make prints.
The more I use it the more I will love it! I am enjoying the change for sure
There is just something about m10m, I liked it more than q2m which is by it's own a very very good camera.
Thanks so much and I really appreciate your support and enthusiasm
Paul, your photography transcends any given camera. Yes, I bought a Q2M in part because of your videos. But I never thought of it as a sales job or a sacred relationship. It was inspiration, which is a kind of gift you have given your viewers. So I look forward to learning from your journey with the M10M. Cheers!
Thanks so much for your support
Perfectly explained, Paul. Evolution is essentially for us all and I for one am much more interested in what you have to teach me than the specific tools you use. Looking forward to seeing what the next stage in your journey looks like. I’m sure your Q2M crew will get it, even if some are a little upset right now. Journey on! 😊
Thanks so much! So glad you get it!
Wild! I had the Q2M... went to the M10M, and had to go back to the Q2M!
Why?
@ it’s personal preference I think. I’ve tried every digital M except the M240 and it always comes down to nothing being even close to the analog M experience. The Q2M gives me a whole different experience altogether and sometimes it’s nice not to think when shooting.
Hey who knows! That could be me!
I miss your content Frank.
Thanks so much mate! I appreciate your support
I will always hold a special place in my heart for the Q2M
I made the same switch a while back. I decided on the voigtlander 35mm 1.4 classic as I often cropped my Q2M files a little. I'm interested to hear what lens you pair with your M10M to give you the Q2M look you will be missing.
Still looking for a good 28 as I sent the Thypoch Simera back
Paul, your photos are inspiring and I am sure they will contouring be so.
Thanks so much. Maybe I shouldn’t have even addressed it. Only a handful have took it very personally
Cheers
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it
Paul, great to hear the thought process into your decision.
It may be that down the line I want that Q2M back but for now I’m enjoying the M10M. Thanks so much for your support
I had the original SL and loved using it
I very much understand the desire to use a digital M camera body.
I have those exact lenses with my M10-R. THAT reassures me. Great video as always.
Thanks so much for your positive response
Great video as always. As an M10M shooter, look forward seeing your progress with the camera. Its also one of the most beautiful M bodies in my opinion, maybe only second to the new M11-D :)
Thanks so much for your support
Say, because of you and Ben Staley I bought the Q2M, now both of you got rid of it (I think his was the Q2) I can't ever see you folks in the eyes again 😂😂😂😂😂 Congratulations with your M10M, its going to do wonderful things in your hands im sure! And thanks for your time, I really enjoy your videos!
Thanks so much! I think it was Ben Staley’s fault I got the Q2M in the first place! Ha haa
Wait!! You are not Lenny Kravitz!!!???!!! haha. Awesome post man! I'm with you 100%
I want to be Lenny Kravitz!! Ha haaa
hahaha!
That’s an excellent point! Sometimes you just think hey life is short! If you have the cash! What’s the point in storing it in a bank
I’d be more than willing too part with the cash for a Ricoh GRiii monochrome 😍
Agreed!
Im personally outraged. I felt the same way when my wife slept with my grandpa. Idk where we go from here.
Ha haaaaaaa
I’ve never used the Pentax! Thanks so much for your support! I appreciate it
Having owned a Q2M and an M10M side by side for a year, I sold the former in early September.
That would make sense!! The Q2M AF wasn’t even as good as the Q2 and that was contrast based.
That`s interesting. I`ve often wondered why there was no Q3 mono.... and no mention as yet of a Q 43 mono.
Absolutely! And wouldn’t be the photographer I am today without that limitation.
Having been previously astounded, and now the steam is no longer coming out of my ears…….I now see exactly what you mean.😱
As a Q2 Reporter and Q2M owner, I’m now thinking of the Q3/43 alongside my Q2, and trading my Q2M for an M10 M! I’m not copying you………honest Paul!!!😂😂😂
Ha haaaaaa! I’d have a Q2 and an M if I had the funds
Nice walkthrough of your gear decision. It's all about the images, isn't it, not the camera. But it's always great if you can leverage lenses you already have. Will be cool to see how the M6 and M10M cross-pollinate and influence your portraits.
Thanks mate!! It’s an exciting time for me
People are stupid if they are buying because of you or anyone.
Thanks so much for your support! I still love my M6 a lot!
I went through a similar evolution. Ultimately I wanted focal length versatility more than autofocus and couldn't afford to have both cameras. And even though I like 28, there are often situations where I would go for something like the 28 Elmarit to keep to a smaller setup.
Glad I’m not the only one!!!
I had the Q2 and now awaiting arrival of my Q3, having said that, I am astounded by the fact that anyone would be upset because you have changed cameras. They need to get a life!
Nice camera Paul, enjoy it Sir. 😄👍
Thanks so much for your support
Wow! I never thought I’d see this video - you loved that Q2!
I did!
From what I’ve seen they look great. The high contrast setting for jpgs did seem a bit much but the medium looked great
@@paulreidphotography thanks for your answer
Happy to see really nice images from Leica. Thank you 🎉
Thanks so much for your support
So sorry to hear about the divorce. It’s always hard to meet the new step parent. Looking forward to the new chapter Paul.
Ha haaaaaaa
I started with the Q2M and ended up with the M11. Hated it. Now I use a mirrorless and lust after a Q2M! 😂 I remember the lag between pressing the shutter and it taking a picture when on continuous mode being a real problem for me though
Let’s face it! I’m going to regret not having the Q2M too at times
I’ve got the Q3 and M10M, still love the feeling of the m10’s shutter. And there’s too many great lenses to try!!
Glad you are happy with your gear and enjoy using it! That’s all I want too
There are a lot of us who don’t really give a damn what camera you choose to use.
You’ve done well to stay away for this long! Ha haaa
Ha, we’ll see how long I last. The fact I’m here reflects my Leica curiosity.
Good for you, Paul. Change is an inevitable part of growth.
Thanks so much! I appreciate it
I must confess that I'm not free from having feelings about you switching to the M10m, or better said: abandoning the Q2m.
Or at least as close to
@ Yes, I get that. No lovelier camera than the M3 imho, alongside the Rolleiflex.
Great video.
Gfx50r is a fantastic camera!
What did these look like sooc?
Probably not great!
Like you I sold my Q2M replacing with the M11M which the Q2M fundednot because I disliked the Q2M but as I had invested in my M lenses I wanted the versatility of different focal lengths & the quality was higher. The Q2M is an excellent camera
And none of us are defined by what camera we use. They are tools! I just like a nice solid camera that is a pleasure to use
I shot a Q2M for about a year, traded for an M10M, and now I'm shooting an M11M. All great cameras. In the end, it's a personal choice.
Eventually people will forget what I’m shooting on. We are not our cameras are we.
You are more than a celebrity. You are our Sensai.
Thanks so much for your support and encouragement
Beautiful images!
Thanks so much
I found that LR has a preset tone curve for the M10-M, taking it back to linear flattens the image considerably.
Ha haaa! And then I do!
I bought a M10 Monochrome because I wanted optionality of lenses. I like 21MM and 28MM. I couldn’t get that with a Q2M.
I bought a camera for my needs and that’s how people should buy a camera.
The Voigtlander 50mm APO f2 is world-class best 50 I have ever used
Have you tried the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50? I have the newest APO-Summicron-M 35 and it’s a stunning lens.
@ Not yet it’s on my wish list😃
@@martinsmyth5580 I’m hoping Leica will soon revise the APO-Summicron-M 50 to include the closer focusing capability they added to the Summilux-M 35 FLE II (I have the FLE I and love it; but I wish I had the FLE II), new Summilux-M 50 (a phenomenal lens), and the APO-Summicron-M 35 (my favorite and most versatile Leica lens). If it takes a bit longer to release the latter, that’s ok, because my wallet needs a rest!
I will maybe check it out
@@paulreidphotography The new APO-Summicron-M 35 is nearly optically perfect.
@@paulreidphotographyThe look of your images are amazing, I really like it
Your channel is about monochrome photography, regardless of which cameras you use. Hell you should try the new Pentax monochrome one!
I do wonder what that one would be like
Paul - I love your videos but I love your images even more.
Thanks so much!!! It’s a pleasure to use!!
The Q2 is a compact camera, all be it a very good one. Its easy to use and can yield great results. The M10 is a proper camera. But when all said and done its no ones business. Doesn't matter how you get there, just get there..
My dear brother. When you getting an M11
Ha haaaaaa
That’s my point, the Q is not a small system, especially when you need to add grip enhancements. My M with the variety of compact lens lenses available is much more discrete and easy to carry. You give up macro, weather sealing and auto focus. Everything is a trade off.
One things for sure! You only need one monochrome camera! If I did get a Q again it would probably be a colour version
For someone to say that they have been misled because you don’t have that same camera anymore
that’s a little bit disturbing to be perfectly honest
It goes to show how much weight your word carries but in reality that’s outrageous
Thanks for your support! It is a strange world we live in
I am not surprised at all. As fine a camera that the Qs are they are limited due to the fixed lens. Sooner or later you feel the restriction and want something more versatile and flexible.
Thanks for understanding
People can be strange. And yeah I would never judge anyone who produced great images with an iPhone! I’d just know they were a master at that tool
I have a Q2M and a M11M and just enjoy the M shooting experience more than the Q
Yeah and it’s all about what you enjoy really
Sorry fell asleep after 5 minutes
Always good to hear from a fan!
Absolutely. And I think some people just took it very personally for whatever reason. I had less people upset when I got a divorce 15 years ago
Yeah and we are not defined by the equipment we use. It’s all about the photography and for us it’s the experience
I also shoot alot of Jpg as I love contrasty, black and sharp photos saying that the raw files are also beautiful
Congratulation I honestly think you did right .
Danny
Thanks so much Danny!
Just listening to the start of this video and your not responsible for other peoples insecurities and childish complaining about you getting rid of the Q2M people need to think for themselves and grow up by the way Paul great work 👍🇮🇪
Thanks so much for your support! It does mean a lot to me as those that have fallen out with me does still weigh heavy on the heart.
Not in the position to buy either. Financially. But if I did have to make the choice ? Probably go with the Q. Definitely see the draw with the M’s though. Having own a Fuji GW670iii I love the simplicity and lack of features.
The menu is almost none existent compared to other cameras on this M10! Even the Q2M has more in its menu
I also wanted, and still want, autofocus and a digital viewfinder.
The Leica Police will come for you for using anything other than Leica glass 😅. Hope you enjoy your new camera, cant wait for more results, cause thats what Im interested in; photography, who cares about the gear someone uses (apparently everyone😂)
Ha haaaa! I know! But some of these lenses are wonderful!
Thanks so much for your support!! I’m glad you can see that it really doesn’t matter what gear we use! As long as we enjoy it
I don't follow your channel because of your chosen camera or whether you shoot digital or film, I follow you because of your style and the images you produce, so to me the camera is irrelevant. My perception of the M10 images shown are that they are perhaps a little more 'grainy' and have a wider tonal range, more grays! Would be interested in your take on this? Always look forward to your videos! Thanks.😀
I’m still very much learning! I just don’t know fully how to treat the files yet. It’s totally different than the q2m
I did that change almost 3 years ago. I kinda wish I didn't buy the q2 monochrom. I wish i just went straight to the M10monochrom.
Why's that?
@@ruthlobner8114
Theres an extremely heavy lens profile that the camera installs into the raw file in a way that you cant turn off in lightroom.
It was originally the M10 monochrom I wanted! But it was way cheaper to get a Q2M
@@paulreidphotography No, I meant why @crayonman12345 regrets having bought the Q2.
I don't get it - don't people buy and sell gear all the time?
Has anyone here traded their Leica m10m for the m10r and regretted it?
Its ok to let go the Q2M but not to trade with the M10M. M11M is the way to go. Not the m10m.
Maybe you’re right.
@ of course! You thinking upgrading already. why you downgrade to m11m? Return it and get the m11m. Theres no way you want that lower grade m10m. Always go for the top
Prize!
I'd prefer a digital Leica, but
I look forward to it all blowing over and people just enjoy the photography
holy crap. the day I get mad because someone else sold something that I bought. just go ahead and smack me in the face, because I've completely lost the plot.
It’s a crazy world this!!!
Good luck
