Today we're taking the cute little wooden hippo and hitting the road driving north to Tacoma, Washington! I thrifted this cute little hippo for a friend recently at Goodwill and today we are going to shop Kelly's amazing space at the South Tacoma Antique Mall!

The concept for two-way and three-way chairs originated in 19th century France. The two-way chair was known as "le confidant" because it aided discrete conversation. It came to be commonly called a courting chair or a conversation chair. The three-way chair was known as "indiscret" because the third person could eavesdrop on the conversation of the other two. It became commonly called a chaperone chair. It is said that Napoleon purposely placed three-way chairs in the apartments of his ministers in the Louvre to encourage them to eavesdrop on one another.

They were also hugely popular in hotel lobbies until the 40's and 50's
You see these types of chairs in old theater lobbies in Europe, too.
The three-sided chair would be used in the entrance to a small hotel or grand hall of a larger home. 🤓 Brigid
7:00 Thank you for pointing out how hard people work to keep up their booths. Sometimes people love to complain about high prices, but fail to point out how much work it is. There are many times I bring in pieces and it requires almost a complete overhaul of the space just to fit them in and have the space function properly.
I always wonder if there is a high shoplifting rate at these Malls. Being stalls where vendor isn't there. With small items I worry people might take things or is it a case of empty pockets/leave bags at door?
@@roseb5945 I've had people steal from me and treat my stuff like it's not theirs. You typically can have locked display cases for fragile and more expensive items as well, so that could help cut down on thieves.

I think the 3-sided chair was for "courting". The prospective bride and groom sat along with her chaperone for their first visits. The design allowed them to talk without getting too "familiar" by looking at each other too much.

Omg, we had a cactus lamp in the basement, which was our family room , when I was a little girl! My dad was stationed at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona, back in the early 1950’s, which I’m sure that’s where he bought it. I used to hate the thing when growing up, but grew to love it when I was older. The unfortunate it bit is my parents passed away, I live in England, so different electrics, and my sister didn’t want it, so went to a pawn shop.
Laura, I love how you repurpose things, which I have started doing. So much fun to do.
Those chairs were used in hotel lobbies where strangers shared it.
I can’t help with the lidded Hann/Hamm pottery but the cat/onion piece is made by Claire & Bill Delffs there in Oregon. 🤗
Also… my folks are on their way to your beautiful state in their truck and bumper-pull camper (from Ohio). It is the last continental state for them to visit… number 49!
They will be married 50 years in September, and we’re trying to convince them that Hawaii (50) should be a plan for this winter (my sister and I will help get them there.) 💕-Amy

I know what you mean about the "big head ". When I graduated high school and got measured for cap/gown, the guy said to me...you've got the biggest head yet, and I've already done the football team!!

I love that Antique mall. It's one of the few malls I feel have decent turnover of product. That one and 3rd Street Antiques in Puyallup are so much fun to just browse. You never know what you'll find in a random pop in, even if it's just a few minutes.

I love that you found the lamp in a booth that was more Shabby Chic than your style, so it just goes to say to look everywhere! Y-E-S girl you can pull off that hat - a soft lining and that "itchy" feeling will go away - jeans and a white T, yep. Everything looked so pretty styled. I recently moved back to my hometown of Tacoma. I furnished my home with items from various second hand/consignment shops, and this antique mall. I have a gorgeous desk in my den that came from there. Haven’t been there in quite a while, time to stop in and spend an afternoon looking at all of the unique things they have.

Great you found the small Kaiser porcelain vase to match the larger one. I love Kaiser and white, and have a good size collection of them. They are so pretty in the black chinoiserie cabinet. And my kids have already said they don't want them, go figure!

I live in Auburn just 20 minutes from Tacoma and go frequently to that mall in the past certainly u can find many unique items there is pleasure just to go a see and past a great time learning and seeing things that u aren't aware get great ideas to decor or repurpose...I use to sell in the starlite swapmeet just behind this building but 4 years ago they sold the plot and disintegrated but my love 4 antique and vintage items still there I'm a VINTAGE girl no matter what...happy hunting for u and everyone in this NICE channel please keep doing the good job that u are done till now...I learn a lot from u I enjoy this channel so much...greetings and love hope u have a good day here...🥰🥰🥰🥰
