No, I don't think so. From the calendar (tally sheet really) that she scratches on the wall, she's been in that location for months. She's been going outside for much of that time as well, which you can tell from the map that she circles an area, and then scratches it off after she's cleared it. This version has a rather bad quality compared to the Vimeo version, which has better colors, no mpeg artifacts, and normal credits. However, the mutation or long scar and the wing tattoos on the girl's back, recognisable in the shower scene, raise some questions who she was before the apocalypse ;-) I would give the actress some credit. Her name is Lila Guimarães. The short is dated 2016 on IMDB. It is technically very advanced, regarding picture manipulation and integration of CGI into real-world photography. I recommend watching it a few times, because of the many details it has in every scene. Most of the flaws the movie would have, according to some comments here, are based on speculations or presumptions. -The moon is not our moon for sure. -The dead man in the strongroom shows no sign of decomposition, but he could have died not long ago. -Propane or Butane gas for cooking can actually last for decades, as I experienced myself recently with a 30-year-old cartridge. It would require some airflow as it produces co2 when burnt. -Some viewangles are showing that the girl lives in a cellar, not a bunker. -The shellac record has about three tracks, which is not impossible but very rare. But playing a modern (33 or 45 rpm) record with a grammophone (usually 78 rpm) would certainly kill the record. I doubt that you would hear anything with such a big needle. -The first two gunshots on the street are indeed missing the reload noise inbetween. -The map is indeed of San Francisco (west oriented), but the architecture of the buildings does remind me more of the old town of an european city. -I would argue that a better gun (automatic) was not available to the girl, or that antiquity is simply the weapon of her choice. From some artifacts there I would then conclude she is a bit of a Steampunk girl.
I was expecting the ferret to break free of its cage, and activate something that would help her. Like, she knows how long it will take the ferret to get out if she loosens a few wires, so she always makes sure to get back before that time has passed. But if gets out, it goes for food and has to walk over a pressure plate that sends out a homing robot or a flare or activates a bomb on her suit, etc. Nope. Just dead girl and ferret. *sigh* (edited for typo)
@@davidm5707 Candles are one of those things a lot of 'preppers' and 'survivalists' don't think of. Light sources in a grid-less world will be very desirable.
Well I had it in my sights. And was behind cover. So I figured I'd better run away and enter an empty building. Thereby ensuring that this thing could sneak up on me from any direction. Great visuals. But duuuumb tactics. Might want to switch off that geiger counter BTW. That sound is sort of giving away your position.
@Reploid REVO The Geiger counter seemed to only sound loud, once the protagonist turned around; didn't make a lot of sense to me- since the Geiger counter's sound should have increased as the creature got closer, to be an effective device for defensive purposes, and not just when the protagonist finally turned around, and it was too late. So I agree, another, inconsistent detail in this visually well-produced (but story wised flawed) short video, IMHO. I personally think the little details are what really makes a story be a good one.
Yeah, I couldn't understand her tactics at all. I thought that when she got up on that bridge-like structure she had a big advantage -- she was elevated with a clear field around her and if the beast managed to make the bridge, he'd have to come straight at her without deviation. But instead she goes running to a dark building with a million recesses in it where the thing could hide and come at her from any direction. But what do I know?
@@eclipsewrecker She was wearing a protective suit, covering her whole body & head. I'd say the air was poisonous to breathe, &/or had a deadly level of radiation. That creature slashed through her mask & exposed her to the air. I'm pretty sure that's what killed her.
When you get to level 10 and think you can take on a level 20 lair. Really loved the sets and armor and visuals. Perfect atmosphere. I'm okay with the anticlimactic ending. Post-apocalypse doesn't always go the way you want it to.
For a survivor who takes so much care in the care of her weapon, plus body hygiene - why and for whom? - she amazes with unbelievable carelessness during her patrol. Many of these science fiction films convince with technical brilliance, but the stories and motifs behind them are often very, very thin. I suppose they're all student graduate theses from a film school.
I think it's credible (just about). We know she has a weapon, but that doesn't necessarily mean she's a soldier. She could have acquired her weapons through other means, and learned how to take care of them through a combination of intuition and trial and error. (She might have some sort of engineering background, which would help her out a little.) Even if she is trained in combat, the film indicated that her peripheral vision is quite poor in that suit, making it difficult to spot threats, and the suit might also be muffling sound. The creature is also shown to be quite resistant to bullets, so running is arguably a better option than shooting. As for the shower, she does still need to remove sweat to prevent fungal infection (assuming that's still a thing).
It is never determined what kind of background she has, and compared to other films, I don't see any sense of outright carelessness on her part, other than perhaps going into a confined area of space perhaps, but then again you're trying to project military precision and tactics upon a survivor in an apocalypse.
Engage the threat?... _enough_ with the tacticool talk. 🤣 Was a bit dumb going into that building though, mind you, even outside she'd probably have died given the restricted vision in that helmet and the awkwardness of operating a bolt action rifle in that armour(?)
Awesome visuals. Nice build-up, disquieting, bleak, hopeless. Unusual choice of ending. I was expecting her hand to twitch to give us some hope she would overcome as most stories are driven to provide. Very well done. Really opened up my mind to new possibilities.
lost the count of whispering myself "this is my best one" while on Dust. The "metro" feeling, and creep was awesome. Maybe plot may have been enriched a little more. All in all, loved it a lot.
Well done. The practical and CGI were blended perfectly. I honestly could not tell the difference between the "real" and the generated stuff. Wide shots, overhead shots, pans, amazing work. The world looked real, and the character's interactions were seamless.
Seems like everyone of these shorts deals with an “End of the World” dystopian future. Can anyone imagine what it will be like if we just keep going on and progressing? Let’s consider all the movies in the past, dealing with what they believed Today was going to look like. Everything from the “Jetsons” to “2001: Space Odyssey” to “Back to the Future”. No one got it right. Hell, Star Trek is closer. Flip phones, computers playing music, IPads...
I concur. In fact, an engineer friend and I ( biochemist) spent some time designing a world of the future. We had no trouble fitting 100 billion people into Texas with the rest of the world for agriculture/aquaculture, mining, energy production and recreation outside the megalopolis.
Every major science fiction prediction usually ends up being wrong. It's almost always because they are about some sort of apocalypse. The science fiction that is about progress (like star trek) are the ones on the money. Go watch Bicentennial Man if you want to see the future.
This short really creates a realistic window into the final moments of a survivors life. Gritty and without direction truly unreliant on any narrative. What we see is what there is and sometimes that's all you get in life.
Insulting to any intelligent person. See can barely see out of her helmet, yet goes inside Into a dark place when a treat appears. She wastes two shots outside where the threat was minimal, (bullets are just growing on tree so it's ok to waste them), and when she's face to face with radioactive albino monster, she just stands there. All the cool set dressing, costumes and production design in the world cannot save you from a dumb script. The old twilight zone episodes still resonate despite zero special effects because they were smart and never insulted the intelligence of the audience. Props to dust for funding these but they need to be more judicious in the scripts hey green light.
Add to this the ammunition for machine gun (which she does not have) slung over her shoulder while she uses only a rifle and a pistol in the belt holster. In fact, no normal person wore a few kilograms of unnecessary ammunition. The idea for the film is interesting, but some details are unfinished and annoying.
A lot of legitimate technical criticisms have been brought up here, and I don't want to dismiss them, but I love this short as an exercise in creating a mood and tone while building a fascinating and tantalizingly incomplete world. It's a great seed that leaves the viewer wanting to learn more. I couldn't help but start filling in the blanks in my head.

You should avoid reading pulp era fiction then. Some Howard and Lovecraft stories can be rather heavy in the descriptive text, while the actual story could be summed up in just as short a time if condensed into film script.
kurtb8474 The visuals and unanswered questions had me very interested until the monster came into play and started chasing her. The acting was terrible and the effects seemed cheap and last minute not to mention they answered none of the questions first set up, having unanswered questions is not a bad thing but you need to answer some to have the ending feel like an ending.
Azure Tiger writing is very different from cinema. In writing being descriptive can be your best tool. This seems less like a short film and more like a test of color correction editing.
Why though? Why cant you simply do, what you are good at and enjoy? When your personal favour is in story based movies, thats cool. But if someone just wants to make beautiful films with great art direction, thats a niche too and there certainly will be people who also enjoy this.
That’s it? Seems like some of these are just regurgitating age old stories with no context or content. Lone survivor goes out but gets killed this time. Not much of a plot twist when there’s actually no plot. And let’s not forget the ubiquitous pet whose master isn’t returning. Apocalypse, survivor, gas mask, everything is grey or some weird color, steam punk etc etc etc. Yawn
Problem: A vacuum tube radio is not starting up in an instant... that particular model would need five to ten minutes to become operational. The effect could've been quite nice, she turns on the radio then goes and pours herself a coffee or some water, the radio slowly turns on, the volume and noise increases building up on the scene, she gets back on the chair... just saying as you clearly like mixing in old tech with apocalyptic scenarios. And I actually agree that those old radios could still work very well in such a scenario.

-I would argue that a better gun (automatic) was not available to the girl, or that antiquity is simply the weapon of her choice. From some artifacts there I would then conclude she is a bit of a Steampunk girl.
A well written comment.
awesome deconstruction!
Take the damn mask off so you can seeeeee!!!!
Why not a brittish 303?
I was expecting the ferret to break free of its cage, and activate something that would help her. Like, she knows how long it will take the ferret to get out if she loosens a few wires, so she always makes sure to get back before that time has passed. But if gets out, it goes for food and has to walk over a pressure plate that sends out a homing robot or a flare or activates a bomb on her suit, etc.
Nope. Just dead girl and ferret. *sigh*

People in the post-apocalypse are very wasteful of candles...
@@NoJusticeNoPeace you mean besides the fact they have a solid form (wax) and are lily white (wax)-?
Yeah right: no way to tell (sarcasm off)
It's not like there's a ready supply of them in any store you care to go in, candle shop, grocery store, or drugstore, right?

🤣🤣 my thoughts exactly

Really loved the sets and armor and visuals. Perfect atmosphere. I'm okay with the anticlimactic ending. Post-apocalypse doesn't always go the way you want it to.
too bad, that's the idea. well done, dust quality.
As for the shower, she does still need to remove sweat to prevent fungal infection (assuming that's still a thing).
you've been conditioned watching too many movie stereotypes
It is never determined what kind of background she has, and compared to other films, I don't see any sense of outright carelessness on her part, other than perhaps going into a confined area of space perhaps, but then again you're trying to project military precision and tactics upon a survivor in an apocalypse.

I think the skeleton was an elephant. Anyway, why did she not engage the threat outside where she stood a better chance? Not tactically sound.
Totally agree, tactically its absurd. I mean what nonsense, really!! why wouldn't you?
Even if it was tactically sound, why didn’t she unholster her firearm for close combat? Absurd to me
Engage the threat?... _enough_ with the tacticool talk. 🤣
Was a bit dumb going into that building though, mind you, even outside she'd probably have died given the restricted vision in that helmet and the awkwardness of operating a bolt action rifle in that armour(?)
cmcer1995 you answered your own question...."she"
And she's pretty slow on reaction...the creature peeked, ducked behind the corner then she fires...
A lot of nice touches in the production. The shocking ending is...well, the ending.

LOVED the helmet armor suit she had, so cool! Great atmosphere and lighting very cool.
Some of the Tech was cool, too bad there was ZERO plot or story to use it..
Awesome visuals. Nice build-up, disquieting, bleak, hopeless. Unusual choice of ending. I was expecting her hand to twitch to give us some hope she would overcome as most stories are driven to provide. Very well done. Really opened up my mind to new possibilities.
These kind of dark, apocalyptic short films always leave me wanting more.

lost the count of whispering myself "this is my best one" while on Dust.
Don't worry, i have been feeding the ferret.

Why the cage? Wouldn’t the ferret act like a cat & hang out in exchange for dinner?
@@puffinvapor4551 Exactly. Who keeps their ferret permanently in a cage?
You don't think the Jetsons was realistic?
Try watching (or reading) "The Expanse."
@VICTOR SPOILS OFFICIAL PRODUCTIONS ....agree, but I think Brave New World was even more accurate...

This short really creates a realistic window into the final moments of a survivors life. Gritty and without direction truly unreliant on any narrative. What we see is what there is and sometimes that's all you get in life.
Great visuals, but hey, it's a good story that's needed. OK as a showcase for CGI work, but as a short film, sorry it failed for me.
No happy ending, but the visuals and the tension throughout the piece made for a fascinating experience.

Unfortunately the majority is very stupid, and this is what they like...
@Woochinatchika Kokillibolinov "Rich vacuous leftists"? What the hell are you even talking about? You do realize that this is a sci-fi short and not a political commentary, right? Or are you just spamming random videos to vent your anger?

Lol this was horrible. None of it made any sense. She had the monster in her line of fire and decided to run into a dark building so that monster could easily creep up on her. Also turns on a useless loud machine that gives away her position. Just another bad horror flick perpetrating as sci fi.
@@HomiesBrownies You make great points, sure it could have been better but I was comparing this to what's on TV - the TV of the 1970's had much better films than today

I was just waiting for her to wake up and use the force to grab her light saber... (Note to self, have more then 1 record to play!) Once again, Monsters move like Ninjas and armor means nothing to the slightest tap. (4 stars)
All visuals, no story. Should be the other way around. More story content, less emphasis on visual effects.
I agree.....no story...............made it end up feeling totally hollow..............
Yawn
All style, no story.
Right. EMP's don't take out vacuum tubes.
Perhaps the radio has a standby mode which keeps the valves warm.
That's right. Also a Geiger counter is not supposed to display voltages. They could have borrowed one for the film instead of that voltmeter.

Big lesson here is that everything you do is essentially a big waste of time. All that physical & mental preparation, planning, mapping, caring for something, etc will come to naught as something random will take it all away in a second. You are no better than the ferret in the cage - in the end just a piece of food..

That poor ferret. I felt more remorse for it than the human. Not that I am totally without empathy but she is obviously the most capable being left on the planet. At about 7:01, the woman passes some newspapers and/or magazines strewn on the ground. This would imply that the apocalyse (whatever it was) happened only a few days before, since paper degrades fairly quickly. Then a little later, at 7:47, she comes upon the skeleton of some large animal. It would take three to six months for a large animal to be completely stripped to its bones. This is an inconsistency.
