I'm 70 years old, been a radio operator, 1977-2021, G-G and G-A-G, in the RAAF, and I must say, this is GOOD, VERY good!. The accidental initial contact was everything that happens, it's perfect, it's happened to me many times over my career, this is VERY genuine, in every way!. Without going into way too much detail, the scriptwriters and actors have captured, portrayed, pretty much everything that might happen. For me, a retired Radio Operator, the single, most fundamentally important reason for being a Radio operator, is shown here. Communicate.
Would you say one of the original purposes of radio communication was for help? It's interesting that an SOS was so easily dismissed with such total disbelief. Was this a common prank?
@@SUPER_WOLFMOON It still is. Jammers and pranksters can be found all over the bands, though the worst offenders that stick around long enough do, on occasion, get caught by the FCC and fined. It's rare that a prankster claims to be in distress, though.
As an expert then (or anybody else that has analog electronics expertise here), please inform us as to how likely is to replace a tube in a (western made) radio with a random one from a random module that was on a USSR spaceship and have work perfectly??? Also why would that change it's tuning and make it possible for the Russian to speak to him?

that's some next-level deep analysis of this short you have here... impressive. would love to see your blog where you review these films.. that be sweet
I'm not not ashamed to say it, it brought tears to my eyes. The one thing that we all fear, is that we might be alone at the end. We just won't admit it to ourselves or others. If this was a play ina theater, it would get a standing ovation. And the applause would be heard for miles.
This was one of THE best stories. Most of the DUST shows are very special effects oriented and are WONDERFUL but, this one was very story oriented and the writer did a phenominal job. Minimalist special effects and a great storyline. My hat's off to all involved!
this short film is a piece of art. So intense and so good. I sat on my chair on the edge and it was something that i really felt. Pure emotion and empathy for Andrei. Thanks for this film!
Tears still coming. This is an example of a story that wouldn't work as well as a written short story, so much of it is told in visuals and awesome acting. At the beginning I was literally scolding the character Hank out loud, "what kind of ham radio guy are you who won't answer a distress call?" and I was actually glad when Lucky ran away. But by the end when he'd found it impossible to hide the basic goodness in himself, he wouldn't let let his "commie" friend Andrei give in to his fate, that's when I started losing it. That's some skillful storytelling, to take the viewer through such extremes: from contempt for the main character to empathy for him, xenophobia to finding common humanity, from a behavior I most detest in humans to one I love most. Ken Godmere sells "Hank" so well in both the sympathetic and unsympathetic phases. I see from IMDB that he's had a lot of TV work, I'd like to see him in a feature film
@@ominous-omnipresent-they Maybe, maybe not. Personally, I don't base my tastes and appreciation on the source of the content but on the content itself. It's just that recently the big studios have become super lazy and risk-adverse, rehashing the same old same old over and over again, and often in a lukewarm (at best) way.
Sorry to break it to you, but Hollywood has no interest in trying to tell good stories. They only want to pollute people's brains with horseshit social narratives and propaganda.
I never quite understood why Americans were in a war with Russians but what was wonderful about this short movie is that above all we are all humans and one can help the other . Born and raised in Greece i kinda grew up learning that Turks are the bad guys but i met a few in my life and in fact some of them were decent humbled people which i eventually got to know them a bit better and developed friendships with them ... Now i know that no matter what your political background is or which country you are from , the citizens , the common people are all the same . Whatever games the politicians might have in their mind and agendas , in the end of the day Jack has no reason to argue with Vladimir , under God we are all equal ! Nice video , wish it was a bit longer :)
OMG, what a fantastic story! This film brought out all my emotions! I was irritated at first at the old man, but then I found myself on the edge of my seat cheering for both characters, right before I became sadden at the end. You guys are extremely talented film makers!
I have just watched this for the second time back to back. I NEVER have seen ANY Dust video worthy of a second round. I may watch this a third. It was THAT GOOD! My thx to all involved. Though I would have liked to see them repeat it till it comes out right. He lost his son but was able to save this man to return to his.
My UTMOST respect to Everyone involved in the production of Voskhod. There are Dust films that have moved me to tears and there are incredible engaging story lines and music, and set designs . Voshkod has it ALL. I am so impressed with everything. Its been a little while since a DUST short made me cry . Im still sniffling typing this. The old guy in the woods retelling of his own loss, and the complete opposite with Alexi telling the truth about his upcoming death and what hed like HIS son to do. Absolutely brilliant. I definitely want to see more from the Writers and production team on any new movies
Man, that was extremely good! One of the best shorts I've ever seen. Super thumbs up and a hearty slap on the back to all involved with this short. The music was fantastic, from the hurdy girdy to the dobro. Gritty, honest, great story line. Unexpected twists, great ending. Wow, just wow.
Brilliant and harrowing story, neatly whispered and cleanly shown, very sober onto a very sensitive bond, between a man who lost his son and a man who was going to be missed. By the way, the music brought back memories of Cowboy Bebop, I bet it was an easter egg. One of my favourites from DUST!
What a wonderful story. The actors were superb and the structure was captivating. Few movies catch and hold me like this one did. we need more movies like this and fewer comic books.
That was incredble!! Th emusic. The awesom theme of you can't change the past or take control of the uncontrolable. Its liek he hallcuinated a story to teach him that there's nothing he can do about his son, he can't contact the past, and even if he could contact the past, he can't change the present.
Blind Willie Johnson's 'Dark is the Night' from 1927 is legendary Blues! Love that song! This is epic storytelling!! I had hoped Hank would save him and he would bring Andre home. 😢❤
One of the best I've ever seen. The storytelling is awesome, the location and scenery are awesome. It's nice someone took a trip in the Wayback Machine and produced a period gem that isn't post apacolyptic (nothing wrong with P.A. stuff but there's a LOT of it out there) and has an ending that brings closure. Thank you!
That was an absolute gem of a story, great themes, the acting was fantastic and I was quickly caught up in the characters and the emotional content was very convincing (it had me emotionally invested in the characters). A Fabulous Movie! Certainly one of the best short films I've watched for a while. 9.99'/10.
Damn, this was an excellent short. Every so often a diamond in the rough comes along. I always wondered, who finances these and where do you get the actors?? This one looked top notch as far as production quality.
Beautifully written, acted and directed. Some of the camera shots and angles in the woods and cabin were amazing. Thank you all for creating this short and sharing it with us.
Very good story! Congratulations to the actors, writers and director. There has been so many bad Sci Fi movies and stories lately in cinema, that this was refreshing for the simplicity but well developed way the story was told. Some of the shorts I’ve watched here at Dust really deserved to be developed into full movies.
I love sci fi that has to do with space. The story line and the character development was excellent! Very impressive! I look forward to watching more of your films in the future!
This hits the heart like a hammer blow. Solid acting, and an amazing delivery that creates a deep emotional connection. What an amazing job. Such a deep story in a small time footprint. This one will stay with me.
I really enjoyed this. I'm HAM radio Operator. I've also used my radios to talk to the Intl. space station. The use of the vintage equipment in the movie is done correctly, so there is a lot of realism. I like that they showed the main character keeping the top of the National NC57 popped open. That's how operators kept those radios cool back in the day. There is some suspension of reality, but I don't think it over reaches. After all, it does seek to entertain. My heart sunk a bit at the ending. But there is big danger in space travel and flying aircraft. And not every story, true or otherwise has a happy ending. I wont spoil it anymore. BTW There is room for another 30 min follow--up sequel to this. I'd like to know the rest of the story.
Great post Gene, Im VE1RNM maybe we will work on 20 meters sometime. I agree on your comments on the vintage gear. I am a big fan of the collins S line and have a KWM-2 among others.but always wanted National equipment. vy 73 my friend ..............A first rate story and acting-thanks DUST!
shivers all over. I cant exactly say why this was so amazing. Maybe because there was no explanation why the cosmonaut crashed twice (or maybe even more than twice? Who knows!) It brought a nice shroud of mystery that just stays there and they didnt explore it together more than just sharing a few alarmed and confused words. 5/5
That...that was astounding. I can't remember the last time a short film moved me so much. Thank you so much for this one, I'm going to remember it for a while.
When I was young I used to tweak the tv antenna just right and it would be a little fuzzy but I could still make it out perfectly. Wow! It changed my life.
Very nice story. I was expecting it to be a time-loop, where the guy keeps going to the crash site, going into the past and keeps forgetting that he went into that loop again and again, always failing to prevent the crash....
I was military Air Sea Rescue. I’ve heard last words before. This brought back the the sound and smell of the fires, the the radio hiss and crackle, the cuts in your chest when you can’t save their physical self.... just their goodbyes. If like to watch this again.... after a while.
jacqueline schael : hello Jacqueline, thank you. But hearing me parroting another’s words (life) would be so inadequate. I will say that the U. S. Govt always ordered us to “save everyone”. “That Others May Live”. It is that order (words), and this motto that I prefer to remember and repeat. If it is important to you, you could go on the RUclips. search “Last words” plane crash. Jacqueline you seem a very caring person, maybe don’t go looking for voices.
As the guy walked off into the woods, in the back of my mind, I could hear the commentator from The Outer Limits giving the outro speech. This is a Perfect "Outer Limits" episode. Very well done!! Man, I love this channel!
the production value has been improved absolutely. compassion is truly universal. in the spirit of today's current events. I wish we find ourselfs in a world that is much more united in service of pursuit of the american dream with liberty and justice. god speed America
This film had me from the very beginning, combining the rural rugged wilderness with the electronic technology of the space-age. The uncommon friendship was the crux of the story and to remember that it's not about sides, it's because we're all humans and regardless, we need to strive to do the right thing whenever possible. I agree that this is certainly one of the better films presented by DUST! Thanks to the Producers and Directors as well as the fine acting! Well done!!
When the art of story telling is done through a movie and done well, you're impressed with what almost feels like conflicting feelings. Some stories involve multiple characters or complex interactions. Others, like this story, involve simpler elements. But they all become grand when you get to observe how all the parts are blended together (right down to small details like when he's talking about the faulty hinge but found out he had lost contact during his speech) And that's the uniting element. And the conflict comes in because it's right there in front of you, evolving through it's life, and I'm trying to find a way of saying that more movies should be better. Not because of an ease of making them, but because you get to see such good examples of how they are done well, you want so much to believe it will translate into an avoidance of a lot of the junk that seems to be consciously made to be junk.
this is by far the best story by dust that i have viewed. it was very well done and it should nominated for the best short story. i was very impressed. very good acting and well thought out plot.
I'm a Ham- as are more than a few of the commenters, and I heard about it mentioned in the Amateur Radio Newsline podcast episode 2217 from April 24 last week. When I heard it was a Dust movie I knew I had to check it out. Dust has a lot of great content but this one is Asimov or Heinlein worthy.
As a ham, I would have considered this a "Mayday" contact and would have done everything I could to help this cosmonaut. The coincidence of finding that box was really eerie.
Well done, one of the best in the entire DUST collection so far. Compelling story and character development, without having to rely on excessive CGI to make a memorable piece worth seeing again.

that's some next-level deep analysis of this short you have here... impressive. would love to see your blog where you review these films.. that be sweet
@@paulzheng7663 it's spiffing, such a short little film can cause us to think so much.
До глубины души. Спасибо вам.

I'm not not ashamed to say it, it brought tears to my eyes. The one thing that we all fear, is that we might be alone at the end. We just won't admit it to ourselves or others. If this was a play ina theater, it would get a standing ovation. And the applause would be heard for miles.
Yep agree 👍
That moment the radio cuts out at the end just pulls at your heartstrings. I got all choked up and couldn't breathe for a little bit.
This....this is really well acted n directed. I actually was attached to the characters....thank you for sharing this film.
agreed.
this,,,,this actually happened, before yuri gagarin, the first attempt crashed & he died..
Dusts production quality is top notch.
@@phantomwalker8251 I did not know that. Exactly that or only the fact, that the kosmonaut before was lost?
Almost cried. 54 homeless male
This could literally be a +2 hour oscar winning movie, Bravo 👏👏
Gravity, Interstellar, I HATED SOLIOS or SOLARIS, so so so depressing
A really well written and professionally crafted piece. Thoroughly engaging short.
Hollywood take notes: THIS is how you write a good story.
If this were a Hollywood movie, people wouldn't like it.
Well said, I hope they take NOTE!
Sorry to break it to you, but Hollywood has no interest in trying to tell good stories. They only want to pollute people's brains with horseshit social narratives and propaganda.
@@cnelsonlv99 No need to be sorry. I knew that already ;)
Imo this is a lot better than 90 percent of what you can get on Netflix.

The moment that spare part burned out in Hanks radio hit me right in the gut.
Sure. But tubes don't smoke when they go bad.

Brought me to tears - and made me smile. At the same time... Simply magnificent. Thank you!
He lost his son but was able to save this man to return to his.
this is based on a tru story,,the first cosmonout died.why does no one know anything about history,???.

It would be a hell of a tear-jerking wonderful ending if he found the cosmonaut hanging in the treees somewhere.
Dont know why this showed up on my feed but thank you to everyone involved in making this. It was fantastic
These guys are remarkable actors! These are better than anything Hollywierd puts out today!
Humorous, touching, and sad. Brilliant acting. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Who finances and casting? Read the credits at the end.

Best DUST I've seen in quite a while. Great story. No need for extensive special effects when the story is this good.
That was the best damn SciFi short I've ever seen.
look up history,it actually happened.yuri gagarin was the second in space..first one died in crash..
@@phantomwalker8251 Ok but the movie is not about that at all
You can call it sci-fi because it's about space but what we've seen in this video is not futuristic and I don't have any problem with that
Beautifully written, acted and directed.
Beautifully written and displayed , as well as performed.
Some DUST features are good, some great. Some... some hit you hard and are truly worthy of recognition.
One of my favorite ones yet! Man, this one really pulled me in and got me feeling emotions and junk!
This hits the heart like a hammer blow. Solid acting, and an amazing delivery that creates a deep emotional connection. What an amazing job. Such a deep story in a small time footprint. This one will stay with me.
This piece of movie art was as perfect as they come.
Simple premise with great acting and huge emotion. My favorite short I've seen on this channel yet.
That was well written, acted, and produced. So unlike Dust lately.
I have never seen such an engaging film as this. Ivan Stepanov needs praise for this and the rest of his team.
Being a tube fan myself, they got the part we all have experienced about what happens when you let the magic smoke out of a radio.
Such a great short… had me in tears…
shivers all over.
When Andrey said he'd hope his son forgets all about him i started crying so bad, such a moving story
One of the best Dust films to date. Thank you!
This is Classic, Benchmark material! It cannot be done better...just hold this line! It "more than conquers" the bogeys of story-telling!
DUST just keeps getting better and better! I was stunned by this... really I was. Please, don't stop!
That was Epic! What a great message this film gives! Great job!
This is one of those films that stays in your memory long after the credits have rolled. Just fabulous! Well done to all involved! ♥️
Finally a normal representation of a Russian man who speaks normally and looks like an average Russian!
By "normally", you mean "in fluent English?"
@@OslerWannabe As in hasn't been made to look like a bumbling idiot by overexaggerated accent for the role played, cosmonaut in this case.
I thought the same, he seemed like an educated Cosmonaut (most definitely were), who happened to learn English during his studies.
@@RiversJ come now you know that accent is brought out by wodka and/or dancing whether it be the Russian kicking out his legs or a bear playing a horn
And it accurately depicts Russian Technology too.
This is a wonderful story. This is what film-making is about. It felt so real. This is not Sci-Fi, this is what life is about! Thank you.
Finally! Something really worth a thumbs up!!
That was probably the most emotional short film I've ever seen.
very, very nicely done, more of it please.
Fantastic. Better than many movies I have paid to watch.
There is so much junk on 'RUclips'. Then an absolute gem like this comes along and keeps me coming back. Congratulations on a beautiful piece.
I was military Air Sea Rescue. I’ve heard last words before. This brought back the the sound and smell of the fires, the the radio hiss and crackle, the cuts in your chest when you can’t save their physical self.... just their goodbyes. If like to watch this again.... after a while.
You can share some of the last words that stayed with you forever. It will be much appreciated.
jacqueline schael : hello Jacqueline, thank you.
The world is not there to serve the American dream. Everybody has their own dreams and values to pursue.
This is my first watch of a DUST production and I am impressed beyond further words than this.
Thank you. Damn fine writing. Acting. Everything... just.... thank you...
Well done!!
woodstoney he imagined it all.
One of the very best short sci-fi films I have ever seen, I enjoyed that so much. Thank you.
Wow. This was a fantastic short film. The most riveting I’ve ever seen. I cried.
