Vinyl Wrapping BMW RT1200LC Panniers

  • In 2019 I did a RUclips video on how to vinyl wrap your panniers purely to protect the paintwork from scuffs and scratches, especially when a pillion gets off and the tendercy is to catch the top of the pannier with their boot. These have to be changed every year but at the cost of £29 for the clear Wunderlich ones this becomes expensive! I discovered last year that for £4.78 (today's price) from eBay you can buy enough to complete both panniers. But how do you cut them to fit? How can you butt together two parts? This winters 'pannier protection' time (and I have been doing this every year for like forever!) a 3M product came to my attention that cuts perfectly without a knife!

Thanks Normski, my Deauville's boxes are looking a bit ratty and I was trying to decide whether to try wrapping or not once I've fixed a crack and some dings. I couldn't see how I was going to cover the whole panel in a single sheet but I think you've just demo'd that I don't need to! Cheers, Adam

Thank you Paul....but we still cannot get out on bikes, same for you in France I think? I should have the vaccine by Feb 15th, but think we will be locked down for a while yet!

Hi Norman, thanks your reply. We can since Christmas get out and about easily in the Vendee. We have a curfew from 20 00hrs till 0600hrs and that is it , and we have to wear a mask on the street and in shops and shopping areas. However we are having the coldest weather that we have ever seen here in the last 10 years, ddown to -5 at night only getting to 4/5 during the day. It is pretty chilly on the bike. But hey ho!, I just ended up changing the head on my 2013 GS because of loud ticking noise. So the bike is now "ok" but still not "right" in my opinion. The dealer said ticking the noise was "normal" and now it has gone he says he cannot hear any change so I played a recording on my phone. MMMMMMMMM. Silence. Cheers Norman looking forward to seeing you getting out. Paul.

Thank you Rock.....when you watch the professionals it is amazing, but you can do a pretty good job yourself if you take the time!

Hello Norm from Ontario Canada. I just rebuild an old 1984 Goldwing and wanted to do this with my panniers. Wondered how I would stretch the vinyl down the side of the lid. Watching this I realize I don't have to. I can do it in 2 or 3 pieces. Very cool!

Hi Kevin, take a little piece of the vinyl and try a test first, just to get used to it, then you will be amazed. What a clever idea it is. Also buy the best vinyl you can get, like 3M, which I didn't do. Mine was OK but reading everything people say that the vinyl makes all the difference!

@@normski3091 Yes I will try first :) not sure about the quality. Hope its good. What does 3m mean? how thick it is?

It makes it so cheap to change whenever they get marked. I normally change every year 🤗

I tried the wunderlich stuff from nippy normans a complete nightmare and waste of money. I have the same panniers on the RT1250 as yours .thanks again great informative video.

Yes I did exactly the same. Air bubbles everywhere, looked like a terrible paint job on a brand new bike. Peaked them off and threw them away😱

Thinking of doing this on my NEW 2022 r1250rt panniers......now that you've had them done for a little time how would you rate this idea/project? Well worth it?
    Yours looked amaaaazing!!!!

Hi Fred, it works really well and so cheap compared with other systems. OK takes a little practice with the cutting system but easily an annual job that can just be replaced 🤩
