No CarPlay/Android Auto, speed limited, wonky stability.. holy cow..... I test road the GT and loved it, but the rider is trapped in the riders triangle. I need to be able to move my knees around. I was hoping the Grand America with floorboards would be the ticket... but with the stability... no way. I'll continue to look for aftermarket solutions before being the GT, but I don't like having my legs splayed out at a huge angle so now I'm a little bummed such a cool bike won't fit my needs.
Im like you just knowing that if you ever want to pull the trigger on one its there but for how long the way things are going Ihave several bikes one ADV and a RG but Im always thinking about that GTL
Spent 4 days on a Grand America and it was an unforgettable experience. That motor and the sound it makes is sublime. I am not inclined to sell my RT just yet, but WOW. Just WOW! Great bike. Great BIG bike.
I know what you mean,, I loved my RT. That is until I spent real time on the GTL. The RT is a phenominal machine,, and maybe someday I'll go back. But for now, I'm enjoying the 1600
@@felixlechat1780 that's not true :( What are you saying that for? I had GTL Ex and I have GA - there is the same amount of space or even more in favor of GA. Look for the specifications, I once looked for them and was surprised because I thought the same as you.
Please try Goldwing. The experience will be even better. It is way more stable compared to K1600. DCT gearbox of Goldwing is a real gem. This bike even got the crawling feature. If someone is planning for a touring bike, then nothing is better than Goldwing. K1600 got much more powerful engine, and you can enjoy the power only during a short ride. People never do tour at a speed of 150mph and if someone will do tour at such a speed then the engine heat will roast their thighs. Most of the time bike will be running at 90-100mph, that's why Goldwing has got speed limit. Also, Goldwing has got better build quality compared to K1600 & people often forget to mention about this in their comparison videos.
I 100% agree with your assessment of the technology, in particular the phone compartment and the BMW app. I lusted after a K1600GT for years, and decided to wait until the 2022 model in order to get the TFT. Took delivery of an all black K1600GT in May, put 600 miles on it, and gave it back to the dealer. That phone compartment, and connectivity issues, paired with the jinky app were so frustrating that every ride I wound up a little bit more disappointed. Just bought a 2019 K1600GT and I am thrilled. Great review, very insightful and it is clear that you spent significant time on the bike - everything you pointed out is spot on.
You nailed the instability issue of the GA. I sold my 2018 Grand America because of it. I tried a different windscreens and tires to no avail, the stability issue was still there on the freeway. I’ve previously had a 2014 GTL, 2017 RT and other non-BMW bikes - none displayed the instability of the 2018 GA. I now have a 2022 GTL and no stability issues with it. BMW is aware of the issue, hence the bike being speed limited.
Sold my K1600B after a few months. Most unstable bike I've ever ridden and I've owned 17 bikes. Was made even worse in dirty air situations. Shame really. I loved everything else about the bike but felt very unsafe on it.
I just sold mine. Never should have listened to the internet no it alls. Nothing fixed the instability. Amazing bike, except it's not a touring bike if it can't handle any dirty air.
You guys with the instability issues need to quit crying. I own a 21 k1600b. Put the suspension setting into two mode and actually ride the thing. This bike hauls ass going down highways.
Very accurate review (2016 GTL owner). Fell in love with the K1600 riding it for the 1st time during our 2-up tour through the Pyrenees-Spain and France. All those 180+ degree switchback climbs had me a bit worried, but the bike simply crushed it and was extremely confidence inspiring. It pulled in every gear. I did get leg cramps from time to time and some stopngo traffic felt heavy and sometimes fearful or dropping it during a few lunch and coffee stops. My 5'5" wife gave her experience as a pillion 10 out of 10 so I purchased a used one as soon as we returned to the U.S. Happy wife.... From a styling perspective, I much prefer the K over the G which I have not ridden. Now that I'm used to all the character flaws of the K1600, I have no regrets coming from several Yamaha FJRs. Too much tech is a distraction for me. Just gimme the wind, engine sound and some curves and I'm good to go.
It is worth adding to your points that the Goldwing uses regular fuel, maintenance intervals are quite far apart, and their dealer network is abundant in NA.
Up here in Canada, I never use regular fuel in any of my bikes, regardless of brand. The ethanol in the regular fuel actually attracts and absorbs water and really does a number on the tank and fuel system over the 6-7 months of storage over winter. The higher octane premium fuel doesn’t contain ethanol.
I test rode the 1600GT in its second year of production, and was considering it as a replacement for my R1200RT. I LOVE the 1600GT. Gobs of power from any RPM from an engine that is as smooth as a prom queen's thighs, and handles like a bike 250lbs lighter than what the factory specs say it is. I ultimately swapped over to a 1200GS, but the memory of that 1600GT test ride leaves me with a longing in my heart. I can't imagine a better trans-continental tourer.
@@BigRockMoto the new model the suspension is automatic.. but the previous non tft version, set the suspension as having luggage or 2 up on the highway and she is rock solid.
That was the most honest review I ever watched. I had a gold wind, made me a bobble head, the wind buffeting of my head I could just never solve, it also had a weird shimmy at about 65mph, the BMW K1200LT is the most confidence inspiring motorycle ride I ever had, the brakes are very touchy, they stop you in a heart bueat....I miss the goldwings low center of cravity and its better analog gages vs the high tech bs of BMW, but after a three hour ride, my butt was less sore on the Triumph Trouphy, the the goldwind, and finally the bmw....take that to the bank.
You spoke briefly about the instability issue with the Grand America and said it was only an issue on this model. That is NOT what I am hearing. It was first reported on the GTL and since then I have run across this issue on every k1600 model. It seems to occur in dirty air. Meaning when in heavy traffic, around semi-truck and windy days most often. In calm weather and no other traffic near you it seems to be less of a problem. What's keeping me from buying a GTL..this exact issue. I've gone back and forth between the GTL and the Harley Davidson Road Glide, the Road Glide is winning even though it cost more initially and you are going to spend a great deal more making it what you want to ride. The biggest advantage to the GTL or any K1600 is it comes from the factory maxed out with horsepower and pretty much all the goodies you want.
I demoed a GA and loved it. I compared it to the new wing and compared everything from fit finish to maintenance costs, etc. Spent weeks reasearching the BMW. In the end the BMW was very expensive to maintain and lack of delealers throughout the US were deal breakers for me. The engine on the BMW was unbelievable!
The K1600GT doesn't come with the top case (which is reported to cause some high speed instability) and is not limited to 100 mph. If you like scary fast, this is the bike is for you.
You’ve forgot to talk about the fact that this bike comes with a reverse gear! This is a great video i think you should have covered that as well! Good job
I owned a 2015 K1600GT for 4 months (Jan-April 2016). Despite wanting to like it I gave up and sold it after only 4 months and went back to my beloved R1200GS. I loved the overall power of the K1600 (I called it a 160 HP electric motor) but hated the complete and total lack of flywheel, the compromised gearing (too tall in 1st gear, too close together), and the weight. It was the only bike I've ridden that I was glad for the twisties to end. I also could not get comfortable from the waste down.
On my third Goldwing since 2007 (currently 2019 DCT) I tried a K1600 GTL and I really wanted to like it, but like you said, the pegs are set up to high and back it was really hard on my knees and couldn't see myself riding long distances on it. The Grand America was a bit better but not much and the floor boards seemed to have just put my knees and hips in a different position but still tight. Also the maintenance cost; The Goldwing is kind of a 'set and forget' much like a car. Change oil, filters, and tires when they need it. The BMW seems to need this more often. I've never had to adjust valves on my Goldwings. I like the (much) larger gas tank on the BMW. I wish Honda came out with a 7 gal tank. The tires on a Goldwing are much wider and last longer. I couldn't afford to get a new set, possibly two sets of tires every year when I can get over twice the millage on my bikes than what I've seen people on the K 1600 forums say what they get. 7-8K on a set of tires? Is this correct? That seems crazy for a touring bike. The dealership I was at also told me putting a trail hitch on / towing with a BMW would void the warranty. Like I said, I really wanted to like it but it just doesn't fit me.
Took me a few years to truly "grow into" my 2018 K1600GTL but now I feel like it "shrunk" down to the size of an Fj1300R. Nimble AF! I can go interstate, no problem. After 63 years of "being ridden hard and put away wet". I feel like I'm 35 when the corners come into view. Does the GW make anybody feel like that? I have no problem with everybody having their opinions, but, in my opinion, (with never having ridden a GW) These two bikes are really not comparable. The K1600 is closer to the FJ1300 than it is to the GW1800. The GW is comfort touring. The K is SPORT tourer. My K16 is like "goes by itself" now. I look, it goes there. Effortlessly. Poetry in Motion.
Had the 2017 K1600 bagger from brand new. It drank the BMW advantec oil like it was going out of fashion. I got rid of it after the gearbox recall and a faulty sprag clutch issue where it had sat for 7 weeks in a glossy fronted franchise dealership. The DCT Goldwing eventually put the smile back on my face and I have not looked back since.
The power And comfort as well size is what keep me with my k1600, but what I go thru with this bike is another story. I always pize BMW and Mercedes from my and family experience, for they quality build and no issue, until in 2018 I bought new k1600 moving from Japanese bikes where change of oil was only thing to do but in BMW I had - failure of transmission, failure of engine /replaced, failure of switches on handlebar 3x, 4x replacement of Navi, abs failure. Now bike work fine with 50000miles on clock but the quality build stay in my head which affect my searching for new beast. I think I will end up with new gtl for size, power, comfort. I hope they fixt the issue with build that some k1600 pull to left if you barley touch handlebar because if you go trips like me from north Scotland to Croatia it affect your shoulder due to pushing bar constant to counteract bike pull. It’s amazing bike give you plenty smile and plenty visits in workshop too. Everything in that review is as the bike is apart long review knowledge. Just to add you absolutely right for the phone pocket on bike it is perfect space not for phone but for credit card while traveling on highways in Europe lol
I traded my K1600GT for a brand New Africa Twin ATAS DCT for the same reason. Too many visits to the dealer for servicing: either topping oil, or topping coolant, resetting or calibrating the quickshifter. And add the fact that this bike eats tyres for breakfast.
Great review (2021) Goldwing owner. I absolutely love the Goldwing for all of your reasons and more. Put it in sport mode and the motor wakes up and becomes a sport bike. It really doesn't feel heavy at all. BMW does make some amazing bikes, but Honda's reliability is second to none.
I have been riding a 2012 K1600 for 2 years. Beautiful bike and a lot of fun. No drawbacks. Because I went on an adventure, (see "krazyklaas part one) the bike was no longer suitable because I also have to be able to go off road. Therefore I now have an Afica Twin 1100 the simple model. No comparison possible, of course. But when I see you riding and hear that addictive sound.......
I test drove a GA for an entire day and then test drove a New 18wing. I actually loved the GA far better than the wing for many reasons. My decision to buy the wing instead of the GA came down to maintenance costs, dealer network and parts availability. Far and away the GA was a lot more to maintain. I do know 2 people would bought GTL's and after 3 yrs traded them in due to issues and maintenance costs. That motor in these bikes is unbelievable...wish my wing had it but, i made the right decision in choosing the right bike for me.
I am an owner of a 2022 Grand America and found your review very accurate. The power is amazing! The BMW connected app is poorly designed when compared to Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto. The wobble is perfectly described as disconcerting, but is not not always present and believe it or not feels quite normal after some time in the saddle. I purchased the bike because the looks appealed to me and for long trips through the Rockies, and have yet to be disappointed. I am constantly looking for reasons to get back on and ride. Thank you for your review. Hopefully BMW, or any manufacturer for that matter, will watch it and listen to your critiques and some time in the future when I am ready to purchase a new bike the perfect bike will exist. 👍
I had the wobble on two different k1600 Baggers. One of them was a demo bike , and the other was a bike that I rented in nevada, knowing that it was most likely going to wobble, and it most certainly did. I wholeheartedly agree, it is very disconcerting - not what I would want in a touring motorcycle.
Very thorough and honest review. I have a 2018 GTL and love most everything about it. The bluetooth radio connections are abysmal, but I get around that by using my headset for music and phone. The engine is superb, and the quick-shifter is like butter. Highway pegs on the engine protecters are a life saver for extended rides. I have ordered a new GTL with the TFT screen and supposedly improved bluetooth, but now I wonder about my phone fitting the compartment. It is a heavy bike and not the best for around town. To counter that, I bought an R1250RS, which is lighter and much more nimble in town. I love the TFT screen and bluetooth connections. It makes a great commuting bike, and performance is fantastic, but it is NOT a touring bike. The quick-shifter is very clunky 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd, and I'm adjusting to that. I considered getting an R1250RT as a 1-bike-fits all, but after renting one for a tour in the European Alps, I find it considerably underpowered compared to the GTL and heavier than the RS with the same clunky quick-shifter. I have not ridden the Goldwing. Service on a Honda would be much closer to my home, but it seems to scrape underparts much more easily than the GTL.
I completely agree about all the points, I wish the k1600 had the same gauge cluster as the goldwing, then it would be absolutely perfect to me. Despite the extra perceived weight. The goldwing feels like a much more refined bike in terms of tech, stability, and integration, but the k16 makes me smile every time I hit the gas with that wicked induction sound. Next bike, the choice between these two will be tough.
@@hotdog9262 I always enjoy seeing a true tachometer rev out. Having bikes with both screen and analog, I just love the analog, but it is nice to also have the screen in the middle for maps and such.
@@djdonago1 I removed every piece of the sound system on my RT, including the sat radio, amp, receiver, etc. I used the space where the speakers went for extra storage. BMW ought to be ashamed of themselves for the crap system they use- can't hear it above 20 or so.
Thank you for the VERY VERY honest review. I get so tired of other reviewers that just sing praises of how wonderful everything is...as if they're trying to write some flowery novel. Keep these coming!
Just bought a (used) GTL. Watching some videos and test-riding convinced me this is the bike for my 120 mile each way commute, once a week here in SoCal. Oh and it lane splits just fine too. Slim pannier covers are on their way from Hornig in Germany.
The best alternative to these two bikes is the Goldwing/BMW is the GSA. 200Lb lighter and can easily be worked on without having to take off all the plastic just to change spark plugs.
Excellent review. I’ve owned the 2019 1600B for two years now and I love it. I will say the B also drifts just a little when traveling down the Highway. The stereos on these bikes absolutely sucks. Worst speakers ever. I love the new instrumental panel. I can say my bike is stock regarding the engine and pipes. I topped it at 145 MPH so the bagger will flat out move BUT because of you 😉 I’m selling it now to buy the 2022 1250 GSA. Great job Ian
I own a K16GT. Rode a ‘22 Wing extensively lately. Put a few miles on a ‘22 Road Glide Limited CVO too. I wasn’t huge on the CVO although it was my 2nd favorite engine. Ahead of the Wing. The Gold Wing has more ponies but didn’t feel like it had much of a power advantage on the CVO. Brakes - BMW. Suspension - Honda. Seats - CVO but all 3 are the shits for anyone over 180lbs. Dealer Network - CVO. Wing 2nd here. Materials - BMW. Ergonomics - Wing. Public attention - CVO & BMW. Honda is invisable with these 2 around. Motor - BMW…& maybe the deciding factor. It’s plain addictive. Easily spanks the other 2. Fun factor thru the roof when u roll on the inline 6’s loud handle.
I am glad you mentioned the instability issue with the Grand America. There is even a class action lawsuit against BMW. I bought one in 2018 and returned it after a few days later losing quite some money... My dealership would not admit there was an issue. As you said, this is unacceptable for this kind of bike. As much as I like BMW bikes (I still own a 1200 GSA), this time the company handled this very poorly.
Probably the best bike reviews. I'm not a biker though I rode some in my youth and I grew up in the eighties in Limburg, Belgium (at the time the best motocrossers came from there and many of my friends were into bikes), but I kept a lively interest in mechanics. Concise, on point, honest, knowledgable ánd interesting/entertaining also for non-bikers.
Stability issue is interesting: you have the back wheel thrusting below the CofG, the top box dragging above the Cof G and now they've added a small set of wings to lift the front wheel a little more (footboards). perhaps some downforce at the front to keep the wheel on the ground might help? Great review. Thanks.
I'm looking to replace my 2018 Kawasaki Concorse 14. So far nothing comes close, from performance, ride quality and price range. Now I'm riding a BMW S1000XR, having the same issues as you described on the highway, it moves a lot laterally. Placed an order for K1600 B Special Midnight Edition, I'll see how that handles. Goldwing seems tobe too big for city commute and sometime on a longer cruise. Any other ideas? thx
I was shopping for a sport bike in 2018 and was leaning towards the K16 because of the performance. I checked out a GTL at the local dealership (the Grand America didn't exist yet) and was terrified just sitting on it in the showroom. The seat was too high for my 29" inseam, and it felt heavier than my Chevy pickup. The '18 Goldwing Tour DCT fit me like a glove, was easy to ride, and I had to go with it. Thank you for the excellent and honest review.
Is that inseam to the ankle or to the floor? maybe the GTL had the 2 inch raised seat installed, meant for taller riders. I'm 6'2 with also 29" inseam (to ankle)
@@rykehuss3435 To ankle. I'm pretty sure the seat had been raised, but she still felt top-heavy. My toes barely touched the floor and I was afraid of dropping her in the showroom. Probably a great ride, as long as I never have to stop.
I can flat foot the gtl. The seat hight is 29.5 inches. I have a 28.8 inseam. The the 2023 wings seat is wider. The bmw is a little more top heavy. But any experienced rider would have no problem with this bike. Maybe a honda monkey would better suit your neefs.😂
it's too bad, because the Grand America looks great, but I think for my next BMW tour, it's going to be the GTL. I really appreciate your no BS reviews, especially when you're going over a bike I'm looking at.
Hey, I'm a big fan of your channel. I own a 2013 K 1600 GT and put about 16K miles on it so far, mostly on longer tours. I can say that the stability issues may be just with the B version or Grand America. I really haven't had that with my base K 16. Maybe a little on windy days, but, less than with other bikes I've owned. As far as comfort, I'm 6'2" and even with the GT model, there is very limited leg room. I put an bead seat cover on which gives me a little more room. I can also say that once moving, this bike is like a giant sport bike with engine power everywhere and very strong brakes. The luggage capacity is impressive, and the handling is excellent over about 5 mph. I think the only thing that makes me nervous is if I need to back up when facing downhill. If you're alone, this could be a problem, so, it requires planning. The newer ones come with reverse, so, if I was to get another one, I would definitely get one with the reverse option. Anyway, thanks for your reviews. You are definitely one of the best bike reviewers on RUclips.
As someone who owned the K 1600 B in the past - this Review is Spot on. Even the B was not as stable as it should on the Highway. The shorter screen on the B was super annoying that I had to add a deflector. The bags CANNOT be removed on the B and GA while the GT and GTL bags are removable??? Come on Berlin! It does feel super top heavy and therefore with the full tank of gas, you will drop it in the parking lot with the slightest lose or slippery surface under your boots. Get rear protection bars from Illium so you won't damage your bags. Installing is super annoying because removing the bags are painful!!! Would I buy it again? NO! For long distance touring as well as weekend rides, get the RT instead if you can find one in today's tight market.
I rode five K1600's before deciding on a (used) Triumph Trophy SE 1215. As much as I liked the K1600, I felt the gearbox was VERY clunky and that it was slow to respond (to steering input). The Trophy has about 22 fewer horsepower but it also weighs less so the acceleration feels very similar. I'm not sure if the Trophy has a shorter wheelbase (I think it does) but it's much more responsive to rider input. Also...55.7 MPG average ;) . Af for wind buffeting...NONE. With the stock windscreen, it was great but, with the National Cycles Touring windscreen, I could use a match to light a cigarette at 80mph (if I smoked). Lastly, it was many thousands less money for the same model year and has similar creature comforts...power windscreen, ABS, radio, Bluetooth, C/C, electronically adjustable suspension, luggage, etc. Blah blah blah...just a better bike FOR ME.
I got the same bike too 😎😎 the motor on the K1600 sounds better for sure but like you the price difference was $10,000 in Canada. I bought a v nose motorcycle trailer with the $10K I saved 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ then I heard of all the gearbox issues on the K1600 so it makes me happy I bought the Trophy SE. One question…do you have any front wheel wobble at around 50-60kmh. Mine does and dealer cannot find anything wrong but if I take my hands off the bars they shake excessively 🤷♂️🤷♂️ not sure if it’s the Dunlop tires I put on it this time, usually I’ve ran the Pirelli tires that came originally. But because of Covid supply issues I had to settle for Dunlop tires. Ride safe 👍👍👍
I think it’s the wind hitting the floorboards making it a little bit unstable. I have a Yamaha Royal star and at 120-140 kml per hour, I can put it on cruise control and ride without any hands touching the handle bars. It tracks extremely straight. I want this one though. Have a blessed day.
I did the same. Had a 2018 K 1600 B and switched to a 22 RT. The RT is much lighter and easier in tighter situations. Of course it’s not as smooth or as good two up.
I've ordered my GA. I had a R1250RT and because of the lack of power 2up I'm going with the K1600. Tight spots aren't a big concern for me. I'm kinda a big guy and power is a big deal to me. The RT didn't have enough for me but it was a good bike.
I own one and it's a dream. Been riding it all summer around British Columbia. The bike seems very safe, comfortable and the pull is like a roller coaster launch. Some nice features and a few "not sure why they did that? things" but overall it's a really great bike and the motor is simply unreal. I have the GTL without floorboards, so I don't have the wondering issue at all. Also agree the app is a pain vs. other ways of doing that.
My 22B seemed to have a lazy/laggy throttle and felt somewhat restricted in the lower rpm range, put a bren tune on it and that resolved all of those issues, it also got rid of the new crazy high cold start idle on the 22’s
I did a test ride on the ga the other day and felt that bobbing. Not the end of the world but sure would get old on a long ride. That engine sure is silky smooth and that's the reason I bought a 1250rt instead. Need some rumble. I actually like the tft display. I think that bike needs a software update. Earlier versions the dial wouldn't control the volume. Most recent version fixes many bugs including that. Using the 4 quick buttons make navigation really easy. Great bike but expensive to service. I'll stick to the boxer.
I had a 2020 Harley Limited and they fixed the wandering and buffeting issue by cutting a vent hole at the bottom of the windshield. This reduced the pressure on the front of the bike and most importantly erased the pressure bubble behind the windshield where the buffeting would occur. So if your bike does this, get out your sawzall guys and start cutting, or, just order a windshield with a vent hole, your pick.
I still question BMW’s decision to can the 1200/1300 GT & replace it with a variant of the 1600. I had a 1200 GT & would buy an updated version if one was available.
I couldn’t agree more. I was ready to buy a new K1300 when I found out they canned it. I rode a K1600 and instantly knew it was just too big and heavy for me. I bought an RT and love it. If it ever gave me a reason to leave it, I’d buy the Yamaha FJR 1300.
Agree. I own a 2008 K1200GT and LOVE it to death! It's blue and I still get compliments where ever I go. There is no way I'd trade for a K1600. Too heavy. And....a 6 cylinder engine on a motorcycle? C'mon man! My bike handles the sharp curves so smoothly. My bike is rock solid at 80 mph and no hands!
I’m on my second goldwing and even though the BMW is impressive with its performance I will stick with Honda. Been all over the USA never had an issue with the bike. Reliable and dependable and a better back seat.
The UK Honda ST1300 Pan European had an issue with stability at high speeds (Police bike speeds), however, there were two issues found. First the swinging arm system had to be strengthened from 2004 onwards and secondly, the tyre pressures have to be spot on, 42psi front and rear. These bikes (BMW K1600) are the heaviest bikes on the road and crucially, the speeds you were talking about when the instability kicked in are illegal speeds? I owned the GTLE and although I loved the inline 6 power plant, comfort and tech, I found it simply too cumbersome to handle on twisty high country roads of the UK. We went back to the Yamaha FJR1300AE. Good review though.
I’ve always thought I’d consider the 1600B if I was ever looking for more of a street tourer that wasn’t an adventure bike. And mainly for that engine!
That is an absolute beast! Seems like that big of a motor would make a little more than 160 hp. I sure wouldn't want to take it down a dirt road. Honestly, at 800 + lbs, I'd be a little leary about riding it period. I'd love to see one with a bren tune and aftermarket exhaust! I'll stick with the Africa Twin. As always, very good review Ian. You may make me change my mind about the AT eventually, lol.
This wobbling effect is commonly known on several motorcycles with a huge topcase. Try to ride with a second passenger, because this will change the aerodynamic caused by the topcase.
Just sold my GTL. Kept it after I bought my GSA because I thought the GSA wasn’t exciting enough for on-road only touring. Turns out, after a Brentuning stage 2 jit was fitted, it became totally redundant and the rider triangle isn’t nearly s comfy as the GSA. Love that bike though.
Even the Honda Twin Africa 2022 already has Apple car play and Android Auto, but yeah, still, for its engine, it has its own place, like the R18. But sometimes riding a bike is not always about comfort, ease to use, etc., but it is a passion to listen to the engine or other reasons. So I bet there will be people who will buy and use K1600 Grand America because of this reason.
This new BMW rocks! It sounds amazing, and is obviously fast and super smooth. Anyone contemplating a new Harley must reconsider this option. My CVO Ultra Classic is a heavy slug, that runs hot all the time, and is an antique compared to the engineering of these new BMW’s. If I could just find a fool to buy my bike at a huge discount of its price new, this is the next bike for me.
I did chose the K1600GTL over the Goldwing. Mainly because of the engine and the handling. If I was going to do it again I'd get the Goldwing for only one reason. Although I still prefer the BMW, there is just way more Honda dealers for service vs BMW. When traveling if there's a problem, the distance a BMW service area could be quite great. This did go thru my mind traveling from Milwaukee to Dallas.
Bottom line, if I understand your comments, is that you would not recommend buying this bike due to instability. Great motor, but I have heard horror stories about maintenance costs. Thanks for a great review!
Excellent video and excellent and honest comments. I've owned a BMW (2005 K1200LT) and two Goldwing DCT Tour (2019 and 2023). The cost for servicing my Goldwing is very reasonable and there are multiple locations for Honda motorcycle dealers here in Central Florida. I like BMW motorcycles but there are very few dealers compared to Honda.

Great review on this Mad-Max machien! I currently ride the '18 GA and it's a hoot to ride. Fell in love with that screaming F-1 sound when you roll back on that throttle!
It is a real head scratcher for me. Having been an 2009 RT owner and ridden the K1600 bikes. I have also owned more than 35 motorcycles over 650cc. The 1600 design issues can be traced back to the K1200GT/ K1300GT. The issue with the wind wobble and passenger discomfort comes from the fairing being so narrow. The collapsing of the wind free bubble in front oft the trunk and at the passenger is one of the biggest mistakes BMW engineers have ever made. If for example, the fairing were as wide as the RT fairing, the calm air bubble would collapse further back on the bike and avoid attacking the Trunk and passenger zone on the bike and provide Gold Wing beating touring performance the bike was intended to accomplish. Also the story you presented about the failure by BMW to “Link” the front and rear brakes is not valid. BMW had linked brakes on the K1300GT and RTs long before the K1600s were designed. I suspect it was a cost cutting measure by BMW to not overlay brake control between ABS and a linked design when the K1600 was originally designed. Long before adaptive cruise control was intended for bikes. You cold have pointed out the handlebar design difference between the K1600 models. The Grand A bike has tubular bars, that allow you to add items easily to the bars and the other K bikes do not, a nice feature for sure. So what could BMW do to pull the K1600 up onto the pedestal it deserves as the best touring bike in the world? Here is what I say: 1. Redesign the fairing to widen it for the K1600GTL, Bagger and Grand A bikes. 2. Add the linked braking and Radar Cruise Control. 3. Apple Car Play and Android Auto. 4. When redesigning the fairing, expose the engine more for everyone to see it. After all it is the heartbeat of the bike and why people want this bike. Like the CBX the six cylinders is the show people are buying a ticket for the 1600, show them the MONEY. Put out them six cylinders for mankind to look at. A beautiful model is not so beautiful all covered up in formal wear, but expose a little skin and WOW, look at the beauty!
Considering how much time and care BMW seems to put in much of their products, when something leaves the factory with such a stark flaw in the design like with the Grand America wander, you know it was a rush job. I get it, anyone in project management knows there are just some jobs that go out where you aren’t completely satisfied with the end product, but it’s up to the top management to say “no, we can’t risk harming our image and reputation”. This design flaw also reminds me of the power flat spot right in the middle of the S1000RR power band. Something like that absolutely should not be signed off by upper management as “ready for production”.
The thing I really like about the Harley touring bikes, is that they are rock solid on the highway, and the SAT NAV works great by me. As much as I want to buy a K1600, this "wandering" tendency is a deal breaker.
Lovely review, as always, Ian! Thanks for the effort. Would love to see a similar review for the R1250RT --- the famous State Trooper bike. Try to get the Alpine White version so that everyone on the street will pull over for you to pass.
I prefer the smaller cc bikes because of weight but years back I made a big mistake buying a brand new Honda CTX700 instead of the Honda NC700, after spending over $1500 extra just trying to improve the ride comfort I finally gave up and bought the NC750 and have had no regrets, just the extra inch and a half of rear suspension and the upright seating position made a Hugh difference on my back
I have a GT model. This bike is designed to handle like a sport bike. It does not have the "planted" feel of a touring bike. It responds quickly and easily to rider input. Almost telepathic. This was disconcerting at first; the bike seemed to be weaving back and forth. I finally realized that my ham-handed inputs were moving the bike back and forth. Once you realize the need to be smooth with your steering inputs, it is pretty good. It is no Goldwing (thankfully).
Always loved bmw , owned several airheads r60, r65, r75, r100rs, r100rt, i like this bagger but the only thing I don't like is the engine whine, f6b does it, st1300 does it, kawasaki in line fours did it, some like it, some don't, cbx did it the most, sounds just like a formula 1 car, don't like the cross handlebar, reminds me of a moto x bike, bike has about 80% of power and capabilities that most will never use, i like the r 18 b a little better, still its a awesome bike all around.
It is very likely the top box causing some wind instability causing a vibration effecting the front of the bike. Changing the tyres is unlikely to help. Does the same problem occur on the models without a top box, and better still without saddle bags? That would answer the question.
I owned the 18 Grand America for almost 2 years when came out new. The ride and power like no other bike. Its a Porsche on 2 wheels. The shift assist is like no other. I lovedddddddd the engine sound. I really wanted to love this bike and always own a BMW K. However, over time, I started to hate it and why? Not many dealers around. Service is time or miles and it is NOT cheap. Parts are expensive, not always in stock. Very hard to work on vs other bikes. The engine has millions of sensors and anything can and will go wrong and it did on mine. I would run to the dealer so many times. I just could not take it anymore. And, the Grand America was speed limited to 101 MPH and why? Cause it would suffer from "Dirty Air" and OMG if you are between trailers or in the back of one. That was very disappointing. Sitting position for a tall rider, not so good even with foot pegs. All those things got me to sell it and done. I loved the bike and was thinking to get the new GT. Sadly, BMW lost me, done, no way, forget it !!! Took my loses and got the new Goldwing DCT Tour. Forget about it BMW, after owning the Honda.
I owned a 2009 K1300GT with a full Akro custom exhaust. I regret selling it to this day. It was absolutely ridiculous on any road in any condition. The fact it was the best looking sport cruiser of all time doesn’t help matters.

Je viens juste d achter une BMW K 1600
I’m a GS guy, but somehow my life is better knowing this bike exists!
Im like you just knowing that if you ever want to pull the trigger on one its there but for how long the way things are going Ihave several bikes one ADV and a RG but Im always thinking about that GTL
Yes, it is newer and more refined than my ancient CBX
Same here, been riding GS/A for over 15 years, but this one is really tempting...
Would make the wife much happier too... 😂
The RT seems a better lux tourer and has the radar. That is what I see as my future rolling sofa.
What did Ivan say in Iron Man: “Dont get so attached to things, learn to let go”. Adopt new old ideas, be flexible. Hahahahaha
But for now, I'm enjoying the 1600
The K1600GTL have more luggage space than GA chopped in half
You must be an old dentist.
It is worth adding to your points that the Goldwing uses regular fuel, maintenance intervals are quite far apart, and their dealer network is abundant in NA.
Amazing points
Up here in Canada, I never use regular fuel in any of my bikes, regardless of brand. The ethanol in the regular fuel actually attracts and absorbs water and really does a number on the tank and fuel system over the 6-7 months of storage over winter. The higher octane premium fuel doesn’t contain ethanol.
@12 mins.. i odnt believe this stability issue exists on the gt/gtl. I rode a gtl test ride and it tracked spot on!
I have a 2007 k1200gt, and i had that "wobble" too over 90 mph. I blamed everything from the roads to the tires ... but it was the top box.
The b is in terrible, but of you put the suspension as 2 up, it went away for me.
Good info
@@skippynj1979 hmm, I’ll have to try that then. Big thanks 👍
@@BigRockMoto the new model the suspension is automatic.. but the previous non tft version, set the suspension as having luggage or 2 up on the highway and she is rock solid.
This!!!!!
I was waiting so much for this review, I was in the alps and everyone I met on this bike said the engine was out of this world (so good)
You spoke briefly about the instability issue with the Grand America and said it was only an issue on this model.
I think BMW tries to profiteer more from service than from sales.
I hope they realize they're paying a penalty in sales.
The K1600GT doesn't come with the top case (which is reported to cause some high speed instability) and is not limited to 100 mph. If you like scary fast, this is the bike is for you.
Thanks Ian for the honest reporting of the stability issue!!
With you here. It’s too big, poor wind protection and annoying instrument set up.
A good post ⬆️
Best wishes
Ps I only get 2000 miles from tyres on my R1250GS
I've got almost 10K on my tires and I'm now just coming up for new rubber.
And I beat mine like it owes me money.

I had one for 20,000 miles. Great bike.
RT guy at heart…and considering a GS. Had a few Goldwing in my life, but I honestly thing the RT is a very versatile bike.
Next bike, the choice between these two will be tough.
goldwing gauge cluster is like a 5-10 year old car vs a new high tech one. depends on what one like..personally I like `old` school
@@hotdog9262 I always enjoy seeing a true tachometer rev out. Having bikes with both screen and analog, I just love the analog, but it is nice to also have the screen in the middle for maps and such.

@@sigbauer9782 I have a cardo so I've actually thought of removing the sound system in whichever bike I get
@@djdonago1 I removed every piece of the sound system on my RT, including the sat radio, amp, receiver, etc.
I’m quite impressed with how visible the dash is even through a video recording.
The best alternative to these two bikes is the Goldwing/BMW is the GSA. 200Lb lighter and can easily be worked on without having to take off all the plastic just to change spark plugs.
BMW knows a thing or two about 6 cylinder engines. Most of my favourite BMW cars are 6 cylinder naturally aspirated engines. Love this vid!
I love how you don’t mask the speed. Ride safe and thanks for the great review.
Any other ideas? thx
Difficult to replace a C14... after 164k miles between 2 of those, I ride V1k, a different bike and I am happy but... no C14.

I really appreciate your no BS reviews, especially when you're going over a bike I'm looking at.
for a touring bike it sure sounds good. I use to ride a S1000RR and I love the stock sound of that engine.
NO! For long distance touring as well as weekend rides, get the RT instead if you can find one in today's tight market.
, your videos are getting better and better. I wish you the best and thank you for your informative commentaries
Truly brutally honest. My takeaways:
- The 6 cylinder is awesome!!!! Buy it only for that
- There's plenty to mildly complain about
I rode five K1600's before deciding on a (used) Triumph Trophy SE 1215.
Trophy is very under rated.
I had one should have kept it.
Do you notice the clunky feeling gear box when shifting above 5,000 rpm or below?
I loved my trophy, as well. Just lacked horsepower, as well as a quick shifter. It did handle beautifully, and it was certainly a gorgeous bike.
My friend owns a K1600GTL and I've ridden it. Your review was spot on.
Agree with you 100% on your take on bmw technology issues......sold my k1600b....but still stuck with bmw and went with a '22 r1250rt. Great review!
Did you studied about Honda Goldwing as well before buying BMW 1600..?? If yes do you regret of not buying the GW instead of your BMW 1600 gtl??
My 22B seemed to have a lazy/laggy throttle and felt somewhat restricted in the lower rpm range, put a bren tune on it and that resolved all of those issues, it also got rid of the new crazy high cold start idle on the 22’s
Where did you get the Bren tuned done? Did you consider the Goldwing Bagger before the K1600 B?
@@Kevin_Ho70 I purchased the tuner directly from Bren (BT Moto) very easy to do. I did not have any interest in the Gold Wing at all.
I've always been curious about these. Thanks for the review
So refreshing to hear an honeast bike review
Mike, the update was the K1300. The front suspension was updated so the bike would handle better.
Your review organization and analysis have improved greatly. Very good work , thank you.
Oh, a honest bike review. What a rare sight, subscribed!
I’m on my second goldwing and even though the BMW is impressive with its performance I will stick with Honda. Been all over the USA never had an issue with the bike. Reliable and dependable and a better back seat.
Really like the editing and production on this video. The cuts were pleasant and your pacing was excellent. You're definitely stepping up your game!
And mainly for that engine!
brutally honest it is. probably the last time BMW will ask Ian for a review
Excellent review! Answered so many questions I had. Never heard of the stability till now.
I have never seen you screaming inside the helmet this way..... And the bike is screaming too 😄🔥
This wobbling effect is commonly known on several motorcycles with a huge topcase.
Try to ride with a second passenger, because this will change the aerodynamic caused by the topcase.
Best bike review I have ever watched!!
Ohhhh wow finally finally finally touring bikes on the menu, what a engine and sound, Now We talk mate!!!!
I have a 23 Grand America and haven't had the stability issues at all. Had a 22 R18 Transcontinental. The K1600 is a MUCH better bike.
Bottom line, if I understand your comments, is that you would not recommend buying this bike due to instability. Great motor, but I have heard horror stories about maintenance costs.
Thanks for a great review!
I have a 2013 K1600 GT. It is incredibly fast and comfortable.
I like BMW motorcycles but there are very few dealers compared to Honda.
complimenti per la prova , un info , e possibile ascoltare musica con una penna/chiave USB , e le luci del baule tour pack posteriore si accendono sempre o funzionano solo come stop in pratica fanno due funzioni
Here is what I say:
Much appreciated for your review. In fact, I was about to purchase this toy but after listening to your vid, I have to think twice.
Agree
Thank you for the beautiful pictures!
Oh this is adventure touring and touring motorcycle indepth review HEAVEN 😍❤️ Thanks for doing all this Ian 🥺❤️
those motors sound like an older porsche, absolutely lovely sound
The thing I really like about the Harley touring bikes, is that they are rock solid on the highway, and the SAT NAV works great by me. As much as I want to buy a K1600, this "wandering" tendency is a deal breaker.
What a close debate between a new GW and the K1600GLT. I want one or the other and can’t decide. Pros and cons to both. But that in-line 6 is amazing.
Lovely review, as always, Ian! Thanks for the effort.
Would love to see a similar review for the R1250RT --- the famous State Trooper bike. Try to get the Alpine White version so that everyone on the street will pull over for you to pass.
I prefer the smaller cc bikes because of weight but years back I made a big mistake buying a brand new Honda CTX700 instead of the Honda NC700, after spending over $1500 extra just trying to improve the ride comfort I finally gave up and bought the NC750 and have had no regrets, just the extra inch and a half of rear suspension and the upright seating position made a Hugh difference on my back
You made her woof woof shifting...she look torque monster
