I owned the same 2018 and I change the tires to Michelin that help a lot I have the bike for over three years and test drive other bikes Harley’s Indians and still I like the bike it’s a keeper it make me smile every time I ride it
Hey Nick, you are right, the K1600B is “skittish” on the highway. I had a brand new one here in the UK, if I took my eyes off the road for a second it would wonder all over the place! Quite alarming! Felt very light at the front end and you certainly COULD NOT, take your hands off the bars! Constant small inputs required to keep the bike going straight. The engine failed after 230 miles (mine also suffered the rattling/ clanking engine noise between 2-3000rpm in all gears with light throttle!) When BMW said it would need a new engine I rejected the bike under UK Consumer law and managed to get all my money back. I was in a way relieved as the bikes handling (even in the turns) is questionable. I was given a GT (with no top box) for 3 weeks whilst it was being fixed, it does not have the same handling issues at all. Here in the UK, there are all sorts of theories - the tyres, design of the panniers, floorboards, windshield and suspension. I would describe it as VERY light at the front at high speed and affected by wind/ wind flow. There is a reason, after all, why BMW restrict the speed of this model to 100mph! The GT with the rear 49ltr top box attached DOES have the same/ similar problem as well!!! Anyone out there - I would wait for the redesigned 2025 bike as the engine is (when it works) fantastic! In the meantime I have converted to the 1250RT which is WAY more stable!
I think you must have gotten a Friday afternoon bike. I bought mine new in 2022, or rather my wife bought it for me. I had a 2020 model previously which was a brilliant bike. The new one is just as good. I don’t get any weave or wander, you can take your paws off the bars and it runs straight. Loads of power. Sorry to here about your problem but if it’s any consolation I had the same issue with a new street glide and Harley at first replaced the bike like for like new but when that bike also had a problem I got my money back. By the way I’m in the UK so I know what a pain it can be. All the best.
I have the B version and have noticed the wind behind trucks etc on the highway. As far as I can tell it's the windshield. I had a 7 Jurock installed and depending on how much you put it up depends on how much you feel it. I tried a GT wind shield and it definetly changed. I just installed the Klock Werks like you have. That shield works much better when its down all the way in general so I will keep you posted. The BMW has a much higher center of gravity than the Harley, I also switched, so I think that's what we are feeling. The wind from truck impacts cars sometimes so to say some don't feel it is just not realistic, it's just so much different than Harleys.
I would describe it as less stable than an HD. I've done about 2000mi touring on a BMW s1000XR and it has a higher center of gravity than the HD/K1600 and never felt instability like this. From what I can see seat wise, it's in almost the same position height wise as the HD.
Keeping the shield down riding in dynamic mode, I felt less movement than before. I have a Klock Werks 20 inch shield. I went out for a quick 20 mile ride today, mostly highway.
@@synonyx I am 6ft tall I had a half helmet on. There was wind but not terrible and not bouncing my glasses all over, I could still hear my cardo speakers ok. Sorry I couln't help.
I had a 2018 BMW K1600B Grand America. When I got on the interstate around 70 mph or greater it would shake and make me really nervous. The front end would become really light. I think it was the floor board angle designs which causes the wind to push up or at least that is how it felt. I sold it and will never buy one again. If I get another bike, I'll go to a GS.
I have lusted for your bike for several years but for the exact reason you discuss at the end about oscillation I won't touch it. The speed is limited to something like 100 mph because BMW knows it is a problem, as reported by many other riders. I would love to dump my 15 year old Harley Ultra but I don't have any wobble or wandering at any speed, even over 100 mph. I am a big boy too at 280 lbs and 6'3" with feet at 14. That is my second problem with any BMW, no floorboards or pedals or pegs that I can manipulate with my feet. Why the tiny itsy bitsy foot controls? Excellent review of your bike, rare to find someone as well spoken and detailed as you have done, thanks.
So surprised to read this issue with the K 1600 B having wobbling issues. Extremely dangerous. I’ve owned my 1994 K1100 RS with side cases for over 30 years and that bike is solid as they come, never as much as even a wander. Hopefully the boys in Berlin will figure this out soon. 👍
I traded my 2018 GW DCT for a K1600GT. Owned it for 8 months and traded it in on a GSA. Weight distribution on the K bike was top heavy. Wind would almost blow you over as well as being next to any tractot trailers on the highway. What i love about the GW and GSA is that their weight is much lower and more balanced. They are the 2 best bikes I've owned.
Trying to get my hands on a K1600GT to do a comparison with currently. The GSA is a cool bike and I probably should have given it more consideration when shopping due to it's amazing reputation as an ADV bike. I've known some guys that have done cross-country trips on them.
2018 here, coming from a Wing I feel it in the first ride and I hate it.!! previous owner already changed tires ,when to dealer and they confirmed that the K1600b ga do that and is nothing they can do to fix it..😢 I wish I knew that before. Now I'm stuck it with the bike. Trying to get used to.. But is like u said,on back rd and mountain areas bike feels like a sport bike (love it) but on hwy with wind or heavy traffic is like riding on ice...😢😢😢 GTL don't do this,so it must be some aerodynamic issue.. Good luck
Exactly, I feel like after being a loyal BMW customer for the last 15years, they have taken my money and stuck me with a motorcycle that can't even handle a simple 75mph highway trip. Utter madness! I've ridden probably close to 50 different motorcycles over the last 10 years. None of them had an issue like this.
@@brucemessick6862 I think BMW could easily fix the issue with an aero kit change or maybe even a taller rear shock. It would be difficult to get a class action going unless we spent time/money ourselves on an engineering analysis.
@@synonyx Yes 42, but buy and carry an accurate gauge, this bike is the most sensitive to tyre pressures I’ve ever had, the Road6GT’s are the best tyre I’ve ever used, especially in bad weather, but the prirellis felt more stable, but I could never get good life out of them
@@troygalbraith625 Thanks for the insight. I could not find any Pirelli's in stock as they would have been my first choice. I got the Road 6 GT's on there now.
I just bought a ‘23 K1600 B, 2 months ago. I’ve read up a bunch on the road oscillation problem, and other folks take on them. Full disclosure: I had a ‘13 K1600GT for 10 years before trading for this one, and it never displayed the problem: rock stable on the highway, regardless of the air. One interesting comment I’ve heard is that the windscreen may be a contributor to the airflow problem; that changing to a taller/wider ‘screen may help quite a bit. For my own bike, I’ve never experienced this problem (yet!). I can basically ride hands off for quite a distance without wandering laterally. But, I’ve only got about 350 miles on my bike due to late winter/early spring snowfalls. I’ve also heard that the Grand America seems to be worse in this regard, suggesting that the top case is also a contributor to the airflow oscillation.
So are you experiencing it on your B model? - I've been told by countless others the GT doesn't have it. I changed to a klock werks windscreen (they wind tunnel tested it) and it didn't help nor make the issue any worse. I've also read the GA model is worse too. I've got an update video coming, but basically BMW corporate keeps telling me "The bike is operating as designed, that's just how the bike is" Well since that wasn't disclosed to me, I want nothing to do with the bike. I hope others see this video and go do their own test ride to see if it's an issue for them before buying it.
One modification that I had to do on my 2023 K1600 GTL was to install a bracket that I made for my Garmin GPS, The onboard navigation system does not work well even after downloading the BMW app since it works of the WIfi. Had to take the Otter cover off my Galaxy 9 phone in order to fit on the cell phone storage and purchase a 90 degree USB C cable so I could connect the phone to the bike and charge the phone at the same time. Found out when I rode from Arlington Texas to Weatherford Texas once I got off I20 and lost cell phone connection with Tmobile. Not a fan of using my cell phone for navigation, besides my Garmin Zumo XT2 is water proof and does not lose connection. So far, I have not experience any drifting on a normal day unless I go through crosswinds greater than 15 mph. I will swap the stock Metzler tires for the Michelin Road 6, I like how Michelin tires ride.
what did you use as a power source for your Zumo? Dealer told me he would need to remove the tank to lay the power cable back to the battery. $550.00 labor. Thanks
I tried the GT1600 and once I got over it’s immediate pluses (comfort and buttery smooth engine) I soon found the negatives, especially at speed. Too light feeling up front, lots of mass needing you to be alert if you need to haul it up in a hurry. Not the most stable imho. One ride on a 1250RT convinced me it was a far better bike. Just as quick but more comfortable, less turbulence, far more planted at the front end and no panic moments if you need to haul it up quick. It makes for a more relaxed ride but handles and goes way better than it has any right to. Far more character too thanks to that big boxer engine and cheaper to run/service. I don’t really understand why they make the 1600 when they have such an awesome bike in the RT. A genuine sporty feeling long distance tourer which feels solid and planted. Lighter, more nimble and very little difference in performance.
5/15/24 Update - As of now, my bike still wobbles and it hasn't been fixed. The service center didn't find any issues with the bike and said "It rides like other K1600B's, its just the way the bike is for some people unfortunately". BMW stated to me "The bike is operating as designed" - Nice so, instability behind a truck or car is as designed? Harley doesn't have this issue, nor does Honda on their touring model bikes. I've ridden a ton of them over the years. I've got an update video in the works which will showcase the problem and comments from other owners. I've reached out to the heads of BMW with no resolve as of now, they told me 7 to 10 days they would have an answer for me on how they intend to help. We still have a few days left in that time period. I will keep everyone updated, but as I of now, I would HIGHLY recommend NOT purchasing one of these bikes without a very through test ride on a highway.
***Update*** as of Today 4/1/2024 BMW North America is in contact with me and asked I drop if off at a service center for review. Even though the dealer has looked it over already a few weeks ago.
@@brianwhiskey3835 They were able to duplicate the issue but said there was nothing mechnically wrong with the bike so nothing to do LOL - I ended up trading it in.
@@synonyx I bought a brand new K1600 GA. Coming from a street glide, the GA was horrible on the highway. I felt like it wasn't stable at all, especially in dirty air around trucks. Then I noticed it was consuming oil, also had a small oil leak at the reverse gear shaft. I traded it in with 4000 miles for a 23 Harley FLHTK. And Love it!!!!!
They say the not tracking straight has to do with the floorboards. The model with out them is good. Also the one with the tourpack on it is limited to 100mph because of aerodynamics
Thank you, sir, for an honest and wholesome opinion! Finally I see a US person giving honest opinion regarding HD vs BMW. I remembered I exchanged my K1300R to brand new Breakout for a quick 150 miles run. I was devastated by almost everything regarding HD: - Horrible brakes - Horrible seating position (I am 6.13) - Non-informative display (in fact a stock display was like a Casio calculator from the 80-th) - Bike truly didn't like curves - 114 CI engine and it is slow as hell I know the bikes are quite different and probably I am comparing a Zeppelin with a racing boat, but the overall necessity of going aftermarket with HD is ridiculous. Many miles and joy to you, sir, enjoy this beautiful machine.
Well, the kicker about it all is, that now matter how good the BMW is in pretty much every area, the stability issue is a pretty big one. I bought the bike to tour with, but that stability issue makes it almost impossible to tour on. SO, more than likely I will go back to HD or get a K1600GT. Just deeply disappointed in BMW over this.
Well, that is really strange. I have a GTL version, have not experienced anything like that, but I guess the rear luggage racks are to blame. Heard that Grand America version was given a speed limit of 105 Mph partially due to stability control issue. @@synonyx
GTL doesn’t have the problem. From all the analyses I’ve seen (which seems completely logical) the bag design of the B is creating lift (Bernoulli’s principle) and just looking at my bags, I can envision it occurring. I bought the bike for touring with my wife but am opting to trade for a GTL. I just don’t trust an otherwise awesome bike.
@@4riversadv-ds169 I've spoken to a few GTL owners recently and all of them said bike is stable without any issues. One of them rode mine and said it is much lighter on the controls at higher speeds.
I'd definitely get the Rear Protection bars for the bags for $400. If you're a handyman, you can install it yourself. I had a K1600B back in 2019 and really liked it. I did not experience any stability issues at highway speeds. Mine had the infamous Transmission recall during C-19, so the whole bike had to be disassembled (not kidding) and then put back together.
The GT and GTL don’t have the floorboards. I have a 2013 GTL rides on a rail. Could the floorboards be creating lift in certain situations on the highway? Possibly when winds are coming at a specific angle or speed? Or like you said in this great video “dirty air”. Has anyone taken them off and found it helped? I just bought a B and I’m experiencing drift or “wobble” on the highway. I just put Michelin road 5’s on. It did the wobble before with the old tires as well. I didn’t test drive it on the highway before buying. If you are considering this bike definitely take it out on the highway first.
I ziptied the boards up out of the way and it didn't seem to change it at all. In a headwind, the bike has NO wobble though. I really wish I had test rode it on the highway first. That's why I'm advocating for anyone who wants one to test ride it on the highway.
@synonyx Are you riding in dynamic all the time like me 😂? The manual states that stability isn’t guaranteed in dynamic mode. For best stability rain or road is best. Next time I’m going ride in road mode on the highway see if it makes a difference.
I just purchased a new K1600B Grand America. I knew about the stability issues so I took a pretty long test ride before I got it and took it on the highway and at 90 mph it was very stable but a few years ago I rode a 2018 or 19 and that thing was scary. I told the dealer about it and bought something else. Im a little smaller than you though. 5"9" and about 212lbs.Chears from Minnesota.
I have a 22 and an 18 prior..no wiggle for me..trucks on the interstate are troublesome..I learned to keep tire pressure up on the 18..I mistakenly ran them at 32 for too long..went to mich gt5..sweet difference…I also dislike the nav requiring my phone..
@@thatwhatisaid Yeah mine got both of those a month or two ago at the first time they looked at the bike, it's been back there now again for almost two weeks about the wobble issue.
BMW has been aware of the problem since the B models were introduced. That's why they put the 101mph speed limiter on it. I think those owners that say they "have no weave" are ether BMW Kool-Aid drinkers unwilling to admit the problem, or simply don't ride on the interstate in all the disturbed air that creates the aerodynamic instability the bike has. Personally, unless BMW has a change of heart and wants to spend the $$ to come up with a fix, I think all the B and GA models of the K1600 should be recalled and crushed.
Crushed???,...If that were the case, Harley Davidson built bikes with rubber band frames in their FL's for neally 30 years and a huge number of people thought they were the greatest motorcycle on the planet.
@@lawnranger3432 Harley fixes their bike problems. While they may take a few years, the frames and other issues get resolved with each model year. BMW never admits or fixes anything unless forced to by government or lawsuit.
@@m.f.m.67 Harley used the same rubber band frame in their FL bikes for nearly 30 years. Every time they come up with a new engine, they come up with another problem. The words "death wobble" came from HD. The issue with the BMW GA/B seems to be an aerodynamic issue.
@@m.f.m.67 I can confirm, I had a lemon HD (street 750) once, and so did a friend. Harley took BOTH bikes back after the multiple issues and gave us full credit towards a new one. My local HD Dealer has always done right by me.
@@synonyx No Harley rider would consider the Street 750 a real Harley (sorry) They were designed primarily so the Dealerships in the USA would have a training bike for their Riders Edge schools. Harsh, but true.
I also already heard about the oscillating problem with another model which is Grand America, which it broke the deal So it now seems Bagger also has the same thing. It seems like it is a major design faulr Did they solve the issue ?
BMW has not. New tires, windscreen, playing with the suspension settings and tire PSI did nothing for me. From what others have researched, it's an aerodynamic flaw.
Start at 3.2 rear and 2.9 front . I know that sounds high. But try passing trucks, get behind a van and see what it does. The wiggle is less unsettling if you have been on off road bikes on dirt tracks. But the tendency is to tap off. Rather accelerate. Not advocating speed, but this bike runs smooth at 180 to 220 KMh At 140 kmh it is solid and you can pass all day. Any bike will give you head shake when passing a semi at 140 to 160 🤷🏻♂️
Man your opening comments sounded just like me at my BMW dealership yesterday having my first (600 mile) run in service on my R1250 RT when I was explaining why after 40+ years of Harley ownership I moved to BMW. The Harlkey's arrive in the UK all chocked up to meet US emissions so they all have at least a stage 2. I changed my seats, suspension, bars and on and on. Don't get me wrong I loved that bike but when I decided to do more longer touring a Fat Boy made no sense. My dealer has a road glide CVO for over £40k what.......They lost me with these inflated costs.
That was a HUGE factor in my decision. I thought I was getting a better bike for less. If this bike didn't have a wobble, I'd prolly never buy another HD ever again.
@@synonyx I thought about the K1600 just for the reverse gear but the R1250RT is amazing just heavy to move about - so reverse would have been a good option as an extra. Hey ho no such thing as a perfect bike a bit like human beings😁
For sure the first time it happens it kinda freaks you out, I thought it was a tire going down. I have been messing with some 3d printed winglets, that I made, really interesting results, but hard to keep them on much above 85... but will keep trying, downforce rules.
The first time it happened I was in a 90-degree curve turn on the highway going 80 and it getting squirmy while in lean was some pucker factor for sure. Have you had good results? I heard the K1600GT doesn't have this issue, which I believe mostly only the bags are different, maybe the rear is slightly higher.
Yeah, some are saying the movement is only an issue with the BGA, but its also an issue with the B. I borrowed a GT from my dealer, much better for sure! . With the winglets the results are mixed and without a means to control road and wind conditions, its hard to quantify, but its fun until the fly off. Ironically removing the floorboards/highway platforms yielded the best results so far, I have been bugging BMW to release the wind tunnel testing, but no go, I wonder why. Great bike for sure apart from this issue, confidence is low above 75mph.. @@synonyx
@@McDaidVideo hows the GT? Any issue at all like the B? Yeah the NHTSA did an engineering review on the bike but I can't find the results anywhere. I've emailed the DOT contact about getting them. BMW opened and escalated a case this morning on my behalf after I sent their customer service an email letting them know I made a NHTSA complaint.
No, it's not you. I owned a 22 K1600 grand America for 4 months, bought brand new. The connection to the infotainment sucked, I had to set the phone a certain way to stay connected, it was a pain. The feel of the bike on the highway feels like' being on a jetski' , it would glide all over the highway, especially behind trucks. I tried windshield and tires, they both didn't help. The 22" Klockworks made it worse, and the GT6 tires felt the same. So after it sat over the winter it developed an oil leak out of the reverse gear shaft. Spring came and I traded it back for a HD, this time an Ultra Limited 2023, I traded a 2016 Street Glide for the BMW. I have put 8000 miles on the Ultra so far and have been trouble free and rides perfectly! This has been a known issue for BMW since they introduced this model, and won't accept it. I hope you figure it out and can enjoy it.
Welp, it looks like I may have to go back to HD. I like to tour a bit, 300-500 miles a day sometimes. Stability is a must. I've owned 10 HD's and still own a softail. Never a stability issue, even in 20mph crosswinds. Stable as a train on rails.
@@synonyx The R18 TC is the stable choice from BMW and the 1250RT as well. Honestly, sporty, stable, reliable, touring capable, the Goldwing checks all those boxes.
Those of us that have owned Dynas have dealt with this uneasy feeling forever. Especially over 80mph. It’s well known and it was never fixed by Harley. Well, you could say that replacing the Dyna with the Softail was their fix lol.
Well I can confirm my 2018 Fat Bob 114 does not have an issue with highway stability nor does the Low Rider ST in the garage. I do remember the dyna's being a tad unstable.
@@synonyx yes, the Dyna swingarm isn’t connected to the frame like a Softail or most any other bike. It sways side to side as you’re riding. Well established problem that’s pretty unnerving if you’re used to riding hard and fast.
agree with your review...nothing compares to a bmw...i've experienced a little wandering...mostly road conditions and drafting from semi's. for those reading, the bike has a limited speed because of the floor boards and not because it wanders. the bmw app is worthless...get a iPhone mount and use Waze or apple maps...so much more efficient. good tire choice...and windshield. and use a 4k camera...just saying for a friend.
I rode the K1600 B yesterday. I didn't like it!😢 It's a top heavy bike, and the pegs are under you like on an Adventure bike. I have bad knees, and need forward controls. I just purchased a New Rocket 3 GT, and it's much more comfortable, and it will soothe my soul. I miss my 2016 Rocket III, with 260hp, that burned up in a fire, but the New Rocket 3 is just better, as far as tech and looks. I will adapt 😂 Stay Safe Y'all!!! 😎
Did you take a hard look at a GoldWing? Electric smooth engine and legendary reliability and comfort. And btw, Honda GoldWings have had reverse gear since 1988. The Henderson Model K had reverse gear 104 years ago. 😉
Great vid. I have the exact same bike as you. I love the side stand position, it’s just great for me. Bike also stable and no wobble or weave. Keep an eye on oil consumption it can be a bit erratic on times. Mine came from the factory full of oil, right up to the top of the oil filler. Thankfully I noticed it within the first 50 miles of break in and corrected it. Enjoy the ride. All the best.
I had one. Bikes shakes it head at anything over 75-80MPH. Looking in the rear pannier there’s a sticker that says “this motorcycle is not recommended for speeds over 80mph” - At least it had this sticker on vehicles in Europe. I never knew and had to get rid of mine in the end because I couldn’t wring its neck no matter what I did to prevent it. Besides remove the panniers of course but why would I do that. I’m assuming the K1600 GT has no issue? Not sure myself I moved on. Actually got a TMAX scooter 😂 queue the laughter. Don’t care it’s mint 😊. Safe travels everyone
Just sold my GA and traded in for the GT. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!! The GT rides how the GA SHOULD ride. I also felt the engine and suspension were better even though it’s the same on both bikes. To me, it was worth losing $ to switch. I just couldn’t deal with the wobble any more.
Great review. Very nice touring bike. Did you consider the R1250RT? I would be interested on how your bike compares to that model. Thanks again for a very thorough review. Ride safe.
Regarding the oscillation issue,,,,,, I use to weigh in at 290-315 lbs.. Wether I was riding a bicycle or my motorcycle, all that extra up top weight definitely had a similar effect while riding . I’m now at 240-250 lbs. and no longer have this issue.
I went from a GSA to a RT last year it wobbled like your saying on the bigger 16 , I couldn’t get on with it so I swapped it in for a GSA . I’m a big lad 140kg’s maybe it’s a rider weight thing I don’t know it was very disconcerting though ,I enjoyed your review nice job ,I love that paint job 🎉🎉🏍️
I bought a 2018 K 1600b Here is your fix. On the riding mode Get it OFF CRUISE .. Set to ROAD ( both settings should say ROAD ) SET MODE ALSO TO HELMET + Luggage. It worked for me. ( that it skiddles left , right a little sometimes doesn’t really bother me. Going on 66k miles very soon. Bike will not wiggle out of control or drop you. This is one fine machine 😎
I thought this issue was specific to the Grand America, with floorboards combined with trunk = bad aerodynamics. A shame because I like the design of the GA over the GTL, but the instability issue plus that valve inspection… maybe the 1250 RT is the way to go, but it’s so much smaller. Meanwhile, I do not hate my Road Glide Limited even though it does not handle like a K16.
I thought about that 1250 but I didn't like the torque movement of the 1250. My last road glide had about 15k of upgrades including suspension. It rode like a dream just wasn't super sporty.
@@synonyx I also have a 1250 GSA - love it. The sideways torque of the boxer is interesting - noticeable only when goosing the throttle at a stand-still, but not at all once rolling.
Nice video. I have a HD touring bike and a GSA. Any R1250RT people out there have opinions on the RT vs the K1600B? I read an article (I know, one person's opinion), that the RT was superior to the 1600 as a touring bike. Any thoughts on that?
I've ridden the R1250RT for a short 50mi.... It seemed to torque steer in the corners when using throttle. A weird feeling to me. Otherwise it was great! But that boxer motor is proven to last a very long time! Plenty of Police Dept's out there are using them for Patrol Bikes. I'll have to check and see if I can rent one for a day.
I own one just like yours(719), love the bike, but at speeds around 48 to 60mph the bike has a bad howl the minute you title the bike to make a turn. This is my 3rd K1600, GT, GTL and now B. I like the bager the best
I own the same bike just in Manhattan color, I have not had any issues with handling at all, but I check my pressure before every ride, and I also keep my rear pressure at 43lbs instead of 42 and it actually has made a world of difference in the handling, it keeps the nose down at all speeds, even at 120, don't ask me how I know. I have ridden plenty of times with no hands on bars, and I have not noticed any stability issues. This is my second one, I did not like my first one it was a 2018 K1600b, and it had stability issues. I test rode the 23, and I have not had any problems with ride quality.
This issue also reminds me of the s1000xr vibration issue..sometimes social media is great ! I was able to steal one because of it! All in-line 4s have vibration..even Honda..it was an easy resolve..
Spend time with the app and then in conjunction with the bike. I set up 5 different loops on it in two days on a trip I’m currently on in the Adirondacks. I was bummed also when I first bought it. Now I absolutely love it. Just don’t give up on it. Give it a good try. I have owned GTL’s for 10 years and have put over a 150,000 miles on them around the country and Europe. I have many bikes but of o could only have one this would be it. All the best, you got a great bike.
It was a great bike minus the wobble. Unfortunately, I ended up trading it in on a S1000XR. Maybe one day I will get another when they debut a new generation hopefully minus the wobble.
Man, the K Series has four bikes with that fabulous engine. And it’s a known fact that the Grand America iteration is hard to feel well balanced beyond certain higher speeds…Trade it for one of the other three options. That’s not a flaw. It’s more a limit due to the character and design of that specific version of the BMW K1600. Swap the entire bike, not only the tyres! ✌🏻
I had a ktm superduke GT that got blown all around on the highway. After 8k miles, i traded it in for my bmw. As a bigger guy, make sure your tire pressure is up.
They are and I got proof of it last week. I just traded the bike in yesterday because I am done trying all the avenues I have to get it sorted. Quite sad as this could have been the best touring bike on the planet.

Just because you haven't experienced it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. PLENTY of people in the US have had the issue.
Had 2 K 1600. 16 GTLE and new, back in 18, Grand America. I was so hopeful to own the GA for many years to come and do many...many miles. But, NOPE! Once reached 15K on her, problems....problems here we come. Dealers in the USA, is a nightmare to find. Parts and labor is insane. Very complicated machine to work on. Too much can go wrong. Not comfortable for a long tides, if you are over 6' tall. HWY wobbles in "dirty air" was ugly. Handlebar tend to go to the left. Never shut the engine off while in reverse mode. It could be bad news. Yes, fun to ride. yes, powerful machine. Yes, sweet shift assist. NO for me!!! I am riding a new Goldwing now, DCT Tour and its magical.
All the k 1600 b’s and GT’s have that issue. No other bikes have that issues. Harley’s Indians other bmw models triumphs Hondas. Perfect. But all my 1600 K bikes are terrible on the highway.
I own a 2022 GA. I have 10,000 miles. Very rare instances of a wobble. Love the bike. My research has found it is a light front end issue. Light weight riders (I am 160) have few wobble issues. There is a fix (shouldn’t be needed) by adding aero wings to the fairing to keep the front tire weighted down.
Hello Syber, thank you for your detailed report. I can't really understand how you think you're in a position to give a rating after less than 1000 miles. I always have to smile a little when somebody compare HD and/or Indian with a BMW. A BMW will always be sportier than, for example, an HD or Indian, even if models of the brands have sport in their name ;-). And of course that also applies to the chassis and the damping. Comparing a 6 cylinder with a 2 cylinder is also difficult, in my opinion. I've driven HD several times in the USA and was always disappointed with the engine and shocked by the brakes. I haven't heard of the problems you're describing in Germany. A pseudo-problem in Europe is that some people report that the motorbike is a bit cumbersome in the Alps, you wouldn't believe it :-) As far as I know, the motorcycle is limited to 200 km/h in Europe. Have fun with the bike and a safe and enjoyable journey to all
By the time I traded the bike in last week, it had 800miles and I still felt the same way. Most well known motorcycle reviewers only do maybe 100-250mi on the bikes they review. I ran it through multiple roads that had plenty of twisties, and a 300mi road trip. That's plenty of time to form an opinion about the bike. I compared the two bikes (although very different) because they are both in the 'bagger' segment/market. The problem I describe is something plenty of others have complained about to on forums and facebook groups.
@@synonyx that really amazes me. After 800 miles you can of course form an opinion, especially as an experienced biker. I am not aware of these problems in Europe, hence the surprise. I don't think there are differences in the vehicles depending on the country. Could it be the tires? I drive an R1250 GS myself and have been riding motorcycles for over 40 years. The fact that BMW calls the motorcycle a bagger can certainly be a bit confusing; ultimately it is only called that because of the cases and wants to score points on the US market. In my opinion the HD is in the chopper segment and the 1600B is more of a tourer or cruiser. Anyway, it is interesting to talk about motorcycles over a distance of a few thousand miles. Have a nice weekend
@@synonyx strange, I will check that issue in the Europe forums. after 5 GS modesl I'm thinking about a K 1600 B but your video let me take a bit more of investigation ;-)
Holy Crap!! Was actually considering a K1600B - Same year The oscillation concerns me I travel 46mi/ea way and have no room to worry about the front end floating or dancing around Thanks!!
aerodynamics are bad, thats why it's speed limited. BMW isn't going to fix it because there isn't a fix. additionally, when it comes down to a safety item on any vehicle? The manufacturer will never own up to it because when they do, they will have to recall and fix every one of those motorcycles. It's just like Harley Davidson, owning up to the fact that they built a defective transmission and oil supply system for the engine when they first produced M8. they would have to recall every one of those first generation MA8 engine transmission combination and fix the problem. Therefore, they will never own up to it. They will never ever give you your money back they will never ever in any kind of formal communication Admit there's a problem. and I can promise you the GT does not have the problem. I test rode a GT at 125 miles an hour and it's rock solid even around the air from other cars on a motorway.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah my thoughts are that it's the bags and the rear suspension being slightly lower than the GT model. Otherwise seems the front end is mostly the same to me. I am tempted to remove the bags off of my K1600B and see what happens. The M8 oil sumping was something a lot of owners were never reimbursed for either. Yeap I've spoke to three GT owners near me and all of them looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them if they had the wobble or symptoms like it. They both said rock solid, stable and smooth up past triple digits.
If you watch until the end I talk about it.... It IS a major issue. How are you supposed to tour on a bike with instability for thousands of miles? When I stopped at the peak, I was trying to enjoy the view rather than focus on the negative of the moment. Which is why I collected my thoughts and on the way home I stopped to talk about it. This bike could have hands down been the best touring machine I've ever ridden, which is why I spent most of the first part talking about all of the things I liked about it. It's got some amazing features, but all of the that is null if the bike has an issue on the highway.
It's really nice when it works. But even HD's navigation is better than this because it doesn't require a phone to be on in order to work. I might try and play with it some more today. Carplay would have been HUGE on this bike.
@@synonyx I have been mucking with it now for 5 months on my 23 RT. BMW really screwed up with this. I haven’t spoken with nor met a single user at our local club or dealer employee or forum that can use it or uses it. All have switched to something else. For single day rides with no stops it’s functional. Other than that it sucks.
I owned the same 2018 and I change the tires to Michelin that help a lot I have the bike for over three years and test drive other bikes Harley’s Indians and still I like the bike it’s a keeper it make me smile every time I ride it
The tires did help, but didn't solve the issue.
To certain extent yes
You sure did get lucky then! Very odd the engine failed at that low of mileage. I envy UK consumer laws.
I have a 24 gt. Smooth as glass. Just love it. For super long trips I use my Goldwing.
@@Tinfoilhat311 Can't wait to try a GT myself.... I keep hearing they are butter. I know someone that just rode his from NV to DC without an issue.
@@reddog8145 me too, 2018 bagger, no issues with mine, tyres do get flat spots easily due to weight of the bike.
My 2023 is perfect and drives like a dream. You do have to take care of your tires and keep them properly inflated and not have flat spots.
I ride with the suspension set two up. Stiff as can be but handles like a dream in turns and it cuts out a ton of of any wobble in dirty wind.
The 23' model is supposed to do it automatically for 2-up mode based upon a suspension sensor.
If you ride in road mode vs cruise it seems too help with that skating feel with dirty air.
@@briansullivan9825 Tried to do that myself but the buffeting was so crazy at 65mph with the shield down.
But is like u said,on back rd and mountain areas bike feels like a sport bike (love it) but on hwy with wind or heavy traffic is like riding on ice...😢😢😢
GTL don't do this,so it must be some aerodynamic issue..
CLASS ACTION-MANY OR HAVING THE ISSUE-
@@brucemessick6862 I think BMW could easily fix the issue with an aero kit change or maybe even a taller rear shock. It would be difficult to get a class action going unless we spent time/money ourselves on an engineering analysis.
Good tyres, Michelin or Pirelli, right pressures, and right suspension settings, owned mine for 6 years and never had a problem
What PSI are you running 42??
Yeah I went to a S1000XR myself, much better grounded bike.
Take of floorboards and try without them!!! Thats the problem!! Bike is lifting up by the wind(front of bike) aerodynamix.Greatings from Poland
Did that, no change at all.
***Update*** as of Today 4/1/2024 BMW North America is in contact with me and asked I drop if off at a service center for review. Even though the dealer has looked it over already a few weeks ago.

I was devastated by almost everything regarding HD:
- Horrible brakes
- Horrible seating position (I am 6.13)
- Non-informative display (in fact a stock display was like a Casio calculator from the 80-th)
- Bike truly didn't like curves
- 114 CI engine and it is slow as hell
I know the bikes are quite different and probably I am comparing a Zeppelin with a racing boat, but the overall necessity of going aftermarket with HD is ridiculous.
@@synonyx
@@endstation_1 I've heard the bags are to blame since that is the only major difference between a B and GT model.
@@brianwhiskey3835 Tried them all. Road was the most stable.
I just purchased a new K1600B Grand America.

Did they solve the issue ?
BMW has not. New tires, windscreen, playing with the suspension settings and tire PSI did nothing for me. From what others have researched, it's an aerodynamic flaw.
Minute 14:30 👈 - ;-) - play with the tyre pressures a little. it's not that bad and you can ride through it.
It's very unsettling at 80mph. Hoping to play with the PSI on the tires more this weekend.
Start at 3.2 rear and 2.9 front . I know that sounds high. But try passing trucks, get behind a van and see what it does. The wiggle is less unsettling if you have been on off road bikes on dirt tracks. But the tendency is to tap off. Rather accelerate. Not advocating speed, but this bike runs smooth at 180 to 220 KMh
At 140 kmh it is solid and you can pass all day.
@@synonyx I ride long distances as well, and mostly interstate. That’s why the ‘jet ski’ ultimately wouldn’t work for me.
Nice balanced review on what is a cracking motor - I have K16GT btw and no wobble issues 👍🏻 Ride safe.
I've heard the GT doesn't have the issue. I may have to give one a go and possibly trade this one in on a GT if there is no wobble.
I will adapt 😂
Stay Safe Y'all!!! 😎
I had a 2018 1600b. Sold it in 2021. I regret it… miss that bike so much. Quality bike. Yours is freaking beautiful!
I agree, very beautiful bike! Just wish it had no stability issues.
You need the rite windshield and arrow wings,it solved my buffering on my 2018BGA,also I've heard the floor boards may be a issue. Get the Bren tune
I got the upgraded windshield. What did you use for aero wings?
Quality tires are important. You only have 2.
As far as the air, its a big bike. Behind a semi is like riding through jet wash.
Did you take a hard look at a GoldWing? Electric smooth engine and legendary reliability and comfort. And btw, Honda GoldWings have had reverse gear since 1988. The Henderson Model K had reverse gear 104 years ago. 😉
I did and it just wasn't for me. Wasn't sporty enough in the corners for my liking.
I've moved on too. I've heard the GT doesn't have the issue, but I have yet to ride one myself.
I would LOVE to see a photo of that sticker. I'd post it over at the K1600 Forum and blow the Kool-Aid drinkers minds!🤣
@ sold now but I bet all European bikes have the sticker 👍
Great review. Very nice touring bike. Did you consider the R1250RT? I would be interested on how your bike compares to that model. Thanks again for a very thorough review. Ride safe.
I did. But after speaking to some local owners who also own a K1600 in addition to the R1250RT, I opted for the K16. Two very different machines.
Regarding the oscillation issue,,,,,, I use to weigh in at 290-315 lbs.. Wether I was riding a bicycle or my motorcycle, all that extra up top weight definitely had a similar effect while riding . I’m now at 240-250 lbs. and no longer have this issue.
iTS NOT YOUR WEIGHT, IM 200, FRIENDS ALL OVER THE FORUM LESS WEIGHT.
Thanks for dropping by! Yeah I love the paint too, it's very unique.
I have the Grand America and it does the same wiggling ..
I've heard it's even worse on that model. Plus the speed restriction.
I bought a 2018 K 1600b
Here is your fix.
On the riding mode
Get it OFF CRUISE ..
Set to ROAD
( both settings should say ROAD )
SET MODE ALSO TO HELMET + Luggage.
It worked for me.
( that it skiddles left , right a little sometimes doesn’t really bother me. Going on 66k miles very soon. Bike will not wiggle out of control or drop you. This is one fine machine 😎
I'll try that... but I had already played with the modes and I don't recall seeing an option for +luggage.
Setting the dampening to road helps, but doesn't fully solve the issue.
on the 2022 and newer you don't have the option of setting a mode with luggage.@@synonyx
It's not the tires.
It's the adjustable windshield!😮
That wobble?
@@Hogdriver88 I noticed it while increasing throttle in a turn... kind of a weird feeling.
Love my bmw. Ill never look back.
I have the same bike with road 4gt tires. No issues whatsoever.
I had a ktm superduke GT that got blown all around on the highway. After 8k miles, i traded it in for my bmw.
As a bigger guy, make sure your tire pressure is up.
I played with the pressures quite a bit, never helped.
@@synonyx I want a k1600. I've heard mixed reviews on the tracking. The gtb ppl don't seem to have this issue.
@@synonyx I have a '21 s1000xr and love it, but I'm getting older lol
@@Libertad59 Yeah the K1600GT people don't seem to have the issue.
Theres a compartment under the windscreen for the phone, with a cable.
Not sure if comparing the K1600B to a Harley is useful - different market, different purpose?
I think both compete in the 'bagger' and 'touring' segments. Although very different machines.
BMW is fully aware of this issue; their deafening silence regarding this potentially life-ending issue speaks volumes.
They are and I got proof of it last week. I just traded the bike in yesterday because I am done trying all the avenues I have to get it sorted. Quite sad as this could have been the best touring bike on the planet.
absolute nonsense.
The problem is not known in Europe, was mentioned in some forums as a US problem but could not be proven in the EU.
@@michaelwesselmann5133 Nonesense? Send me your email, I'll send you the service report where the dealership said "We are able to duplicate the issue" but because nothing mechanical was broken, they refused to do anything else. Just because you haven't experienced it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. PLENTY of people in the US have had the issue.
@@michaelwesselmann5133 Oh and did you even watch the video linked in the description? It shows the wobble CLEAR AS DAY!!!
I have the 2019 Grand America and it drifts quite a bit. Scary as $h!+ when it mysteriously occurs. Michelins didn’t fix my problem.
Welp, you understand EXACTLY what I mean then.
Yeap the 'dirty air' issue is not one I've ever experienced on any motorcycle but this one before.
@@synonyx I bet, BMW knew before it went out to the public. That is why its so speed limited.
B is a beautiful bike. I was looking to get one but I will avoid it until BMW takes ownership and rectifies. Hate that corp playing dumb sh**!
What's crazy to me is a simple rear shock upgrade or aero kit could probably solve the problem. Super easy fix to keep customers happy.
All the k 1600 b’s and GT’s have that issue. No other bikes have that issues. Harley’s Indians other bmw models triumphs Hondas. Perfect. But all my 1600 K bikes are terrible on the highway.
Thanks for your insight!
Sorry for the book, i commented as I watched. Im on my second bourbon. The bags.
I was gonna ask how you liked the winglets
Does the GTL have the oscillation issue too, or just the B? Btw it's ah-sill-a-shun not a-skill-a-shun, lol.
I’ve got a 22GA. I could write a book on this.
I've heard those aero wings do work, but often fall off.
A pseudo-problem in Europe is that some people report that the motorbike is a bit cumbersome in the Alps, you wouldn't believe it :-)
As far as I know, the motorcycle is limited to 200 km/h in Europe.
@@michaelwesselmann5133 Well I swapped the tires and it helped quite a bit, but didn't resolve it 100%.
@@synonyx strange, I will check that issue in the Europe forums. after 5 GS modesl I'm thinking about a K 1600 B but your video let me take a bit more of investigation ;-)

Great scenery! I'm in Houston, Tx . All we have here is traffic!!
Why not Goldwing?
So, have you traded it away yet?
The rear end design, including the shape of the side cases, is creating lift, like an airplane wing.
Could it be the floorboards?
The app does suck.

Hello, what is the length of the windshield you put on the bike and what is your height. Great review 👍
I'm 5'10" - I used the standard klock werks screen.
Harleys have always been subpar compared to bmw refinement.
All saddle bags be off correct.
I would take them off to try that theory, but they aren't that easy to remove like most bikes.
Very sparkly!?😂
aerodynamics are bad, thats why it's speed limited.

The title says major issues and early on you say there aren’t any issues.
Clicking close on the video was the result of your contradiction.
OMG!!!😮
There' nothing sporty about a 741 lbs / 336 kg bike.

Navigation from BMW is a joke
It's really nice when it works. But even HD's navigation is better than this because it doesn't require a phone to be on in order to work. I might try and play with it some more today. Carplay would have been HUGE on this bike.
@@synonyx I have been mucking with it now for 5 months on my 23 RT. BMW really screwed up with this.
