However, the form was popularized by the mid 1950s (1954 to 1956) by white music groups like Bill Haley & The Comets, as well as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.

I've seen Dick Cavett stumble along awkwardly into 'darkest Africa' before; you have to wonder why Cavett's producers thought he could gracefully, successfully manage to conduct an interview [or even save face] in particular encounters - especially those who weren't interested in fencing with and were not amused by...or even able to figure out where Cavett was coming from. Not that Cavett couldn't rise to the occasion in fine fashion with many from worlds/fields of endeavor with which he was more familiar...lovely in many ways, Cavett breathed an air more urbane & cultured - but lacked the maturity & versatility to handle himself in certain arenas.

Not the greatest interview. Johnny Carson interviewed him much better, and I do not know how. Dick Cavett is too much into his own pace, and Lewis is too relaxed for that. Cavett is trying to get intellectual and in-depth answers from him. This is not to say the man isn't smart, which in fact to teach oneself piano, you have to be. I suspect he is just a simple southern man, who played and played piano all his life; this was him forming his craft! He _did_ study the Bible. Cavett I think should have dodged the complex questions after a while and just stuck to what every fan, and especially musician influenced by his music, would want to know from Lewis, the man himself, and not outpour all this complicated and overwhelming information. If you look at the interviews of Louis Armstrong, Sleepy John Estes, and Johnny St. Cyr, you wouldn't ask these sorts of inquiries to them, and I think this was Cavett's mistake. These people never went to college like Cavett has in Yale and so forth. They are quiet gentleman who just wanted to make ppl feel good through the music. Its like asking our grandmothers about complicated life questions.
