Super duper reliable Mitsubishi. My family has been driven Mitsubishi since birth. Now I want this. I feel like the front was designed that way on purpose for aftermarket dress up. Look at Thailand now, they dress up this new Trition with aftermarket accessories like a King!
Good to see it is still a very 'Mitsubishi' vehicle despite joining Renault/Nissan. Kept super select etc, improved the previous gen motor rather than going a Renault abomination of an engine. Good stuff. Hopefully we see Nissans get better, rather than Mitsubishi's get worse.
Pretty impressed by what I see. They've upgraded what needed upgrading and kept the stuff that worked well. I think they've nailed that middle-of-the-road sector of the market, with 4x4 performance that will be at or near the top, at a reasonable price. This will sell well.
This looks really compelling. Triton is no longer the cheaper "little brother" any more. That goes to LDV, GWM so they have appropriately positioned themselves in the middle. All the updates look really good. Torque on paper doesn't appear to be representative of actual driving performance. The two big improvements for me however are that the tub overhang is now sorted via longer wheelbase so you can put a tray on with better load distribution and the width has also increased. I think for a $10-$12k difference to Ranger/Hilux, I think this is a compelling package. Especially as in my view the tritons have proven to reliable over the years, and recent issues with Rangers concern me no matter how comfortable they are. Yes I'm sure the dealer fixes it all under warranty but the sheer inconvenience not only takes up your time but for others can cost you money if using for business/work.
I look at people rush to buy ford rangers and totally forget how terrible the reliability is. All they are concerned with is how it looks , until the transmission goes or engine blows up. Then the fun is over. Look at all ford current engines , eco boost etc, they are terribly unreliable. Ford drive train reliability is about on par with gwm. Despite ford developing engine for much longer.
It should hold a good grip on its 3rd place behind Hilux and Ranger. A 1 tonne payload but still rear drum brakes seems a bit poor. Ford is strong on bling but weak on reliability. Toyota are shortly going to take a big jump ahead with the new gen Hilux, but the Triton makes a lot sense in the sub-70k price range.

Loved my Tritons and Pajero Sport so eager to see how this performs just sad we did not get the Pajero Sport 8 speed as it made a huge improvement over the 6 speed in the triton and fuel economy was in the high 6l/100km add that to the improvements on the engine of the 4n15 would have been even better. the Pajero sport towed the boat like a dream vs the Triton where you were left wanting a bit more power. I think it's a nice-looking ute that beats the Toyota SR5 which frankly is a massive step back comfort-wise on the old Triton already can't say I am a huge fan of my latest ute and won't be a Toyota again when It gets replaced next year this might just be the BEAST for me.
As the owner of two Pajero Sports I totally agree. Considering the PS is getting the new 150kw engine with the 8 speed auto, I'm surprised the new Triton is still 6 speed. The Aisin AE80F auto used in the PS is the same 8 speed auto used in the V8 Landcruisers so it will take all a little old 150kw Triton can dish out!
Agreed. While the MR does run shorter diffs (4.272) than the PS (3.9?), once you calculate the final drive ratio is each gear, fist is lower in the PS and 8th is about the same as 6th in the MR. The 8 speed has 6 gears to the 1:1 ratio va the MRs 4. Just much smaller gaps between shifts. The MR (and new Triton) will have 800-1000 RPM gaps between gears. In the MR, shifting up from say 4th at 3000rpm dropped you to around 2200rpm. Upshifting at 2500 dropped you too low in the rev band if towing 2.5-3.0t. Hopefully the 470Nm band from 1500-2750 is better at coping with the gearing gaps. While only 40Nm more at peak, looking at various dyno graphs online, it is going to be around 80-100Nm more in the 1500-2000rpm band. Fingers crossed.

I am owner of the current gen of triton (MR). Love the front of the new triton looks tuff definite improvement there. Also like the fact that there is less overhang behind the rear wheels. I payed 48k for my gls in 2020 so a 12k increase in price is shocking. Gotta admit not a fan of the steering wheel, gauge cluster doesn't look as good as the mr imo, & the fact that the infotainment unit is not integrated looks like an after thought. Hope they fixed the vibration when towing & throttle lag issue as in my mr it was bad, although did notice it wasn't as noticeable after installing a snorkel to the vehicle
It's fairly clear that with the new twin sequential turbos, it has fixed that lag issue. Also the body and chassis changes, combined with the engine upgrade, will no doubt fix the towing issues. I think they've nailed it with this ute, not too many things I would fault.
As a family man, I am eagerly looking for new pajero sport. I love the current gen, but due to its roof mounted top tethers n narrow body, I swayed away. This triton looks promising, though I m still not sure about that front look.

Great review. Would've loved to see it tested somewhere challenging. It wasn't even breaking traction on that 'sand'. No question it will be my next vehicle but I'll leave it for a couple of years.
Another good review Paul, having owned the previous model I was really hoping for something good and you certainly highlighted the good points here. It'll be great once you've done the on-road test to get an overall view of what this car is for the money that you're spending, well done😊
Yes already on the waiting list to test drive, reading the comments above yes agree it is disappointing no rear disk brake, thank goodness there will be plenty of aftermarket players to sort that. I will be interested to see what the rear seat room looks like, you looked very cosy leaning in during the video. Great video
Have you ever had an issue with rear drums not stopping? There is a reason trucks use drums. They keep dirt and mud out of the brake system. Technically, drum brakes are an all round good system that covers on road and off road braking, especially those who drive on unsealed roads everyday. If you need a car with only disc brakes, then you probably don't need a 4x4 ute. The current ranger raptor has a stopping distance of 44m, whereas the previous generation Triton could stop in 38m, same as the Hilux and Dmax, all of which have discs. You'd be better spending your money on slotted front discs to maintain heat dissipation rather than fitting discs to the rear
@je2338 some people just love to regurgitate everything the reviewer says without thinking. It's like when people complained about the triton having less power than all the rivals, because car expert keeps emphasizing its down on power. Little do they know The old triton with its 430nm is faster than the 500nm hilux, the bi turbo ranger, the d max , the bt 50 .straight from the factory. Why complain about power figures when it does not even matter in real world driving.
@@warcrabcyber9908 this is so true. They watch some RUclips videos and think "wow this car and that car have coil springs and disc brakes, and an extra 20nm. It's so much better".
I've always liked the Triton for it's value proposition and relative capability however they've always been let down by the front suspension design which limits wheel articulation/travel.. Interested to know if this has changed with the new model
Thank for mentioning the RPM at which the max torque is delivered (Did I miss the same reference for Power?). An unforgivable omission in many reviews. Thanks for the conent. Cheers
We have the previous generation triton and I don't like the front seats. For me they are tight from side to side. Do you think they have used the same front seats or are they wider because the vehicle is wider?
What’s the headroom and vision in front drivers position for a tall (6’6”) person…. Old triton headroom was ok - but almost seemed as if vision was partially obscured by the top of the windscreen/roof
just got back from a trip to Thailand and there are many of these driving around the streets already in full 4wd form.... (in many different city's) so surprised your still testing "pre production models"?
@@roguetrader08 Be interesting to see what Mitsubishi officially release as on some proto types they put any market hitch but they may release the vehicle with lower capacity. @@roguetrader08 don’t think it was in this review but on others yes. Hopefully the GCM is above 6000kg will be well worth looking into. They need to have push axle back another 100mm this would be ideal for tray loading of 1T.

For some reason, you forgot to put the active safety equipment. I always visit your videos, especially for that section. I like this car, can you please let me know how effective are the safety features - adaptive cruise, lane keep assist system, road sign recognition, speed limiter, blind spot monitoring and 360 camera work?
Great vehicle, wish we could get it in UK. Well done Mitsubishi and a particular thank you for giving it a real handbrake not the crap EPB fitted to the current Pajero Sport.
Still got my mn triton and never missed a bit. Seeing the new one is convincing me to get one, the only disappointment I see is still drumbrakes in the back 😎
I'm currently driving an MR Triton and it is great off road, including sand. Sounds like this one is even better! Engine note sounds good - the current Triton just sounds like a wet fart, even though it performs well.
Dear Paul, really thank you for these videos, I am from KSA and unfortunately Mitsubishi is not big as Toyota so your videos are helpful. I have some questions if you don't mind, 1- Are the seats wider ( more accommodating) than the older model? I find the older model seats not comfortable as I am overweight 😅. 2- When the the new Montero sport or pajero sport will be revealed?
I tow closer to 3t with the MR. With max towball loading I needed to upgrade the suspension to bring it up to a standard I was happy with chassis wise. The longer wheelbase will definitely help. Power wise, even towing in NZ with constant cornering and climbs it has sufficient power even if the gear spacing is a bit wide for the nature of the power/torque delivery. If the 470Nm from 1500-2750rpm claim is true, then it should have 70-100Nm more torque in the 1500-2000rpm band which will help. Given they stuck with the 6spd rather than put in the 8spd the PS had, I just hope they haven't chased a marketing dept desire o for a brochure only fuel consumption figure by putting in taller diff ratios. I'm also looking forward to a tow test. Would also love to see a back to back comparison, including dyno run, with the MR Triton.
Maybe a hot take here but I prefer how the previous model looks. Just can't seem to get used to the front. The previous design has such lovely angles and sharp, triangular designs! Hopefully when body kits get designed for this, it'll look more aggressive.
The fact they told you turn off the driver distraction monitor before heading off worries me a lot, enough to make me hesitant to buy. I remember the drama with the lane keep and AEB on the Dmax/BT50 when they first launched.
Well I can reflect on this driver technology first hand distroying a brand new D/Max on 8th September 2023. Scenario. M1 north bound just nth Port Macquarie. I'm travelling sth, need to stop to attend to an issue on our caravan (in tow). As it's 110 klms an hour traffic I'm focusing on my mirrors to not impede on any following traffic. Next thing there's dust, dirt rocks flying everywhere some distance behind us. I alight from my car to see a D/Max appear out of the dust in the centre island between nth/sth corridors of traffic. Interestingly two nth bound cars stop, look around, render no assistance & drive off again. I walks up to vehicle, (quite some distance, so took a little time) I arrives, driver emerges totally in shock, no injuries, just totally shocked. He explains he doesn't know what happened, it brand new, just collected it from Port Mac dealer on route to Qld to have it fitted out with gear, bullshit. I had to leave him and contend with those steel safety divider cables as he'd gone directly into them, they'd wrapped around his car front wheel, he'd torn them out of the mounts, they'd recoiled across two nth bound lanes. Now if you've ever inspected these fittings, they're possibly 30mm thick solid steel bolts about 400-500mm long with huge nuts attached and these were being flung around by trucks/cars still passing through at 110klms an hour. I dashed between clearings in traffic to gather these off the road, phew, another tragedy avoided. Then debris from his car was being picked up by truck tyres and being hurled in every direction, hence I set about retrieving this stuff. I was gobsmacked to find it was remnants of his front alloy wheel, shattered into pieces. Lots of small trivial plastic but all large plastics and all metal objects removed. Whilst doing this I attacked the attention of a nth bound ambulance whom stopped to address my actions, then saw the D/Max and presumed I was driver. No, I points the driver out resting beside D/max. They activate lights which begins to slow traffic , thank god. They attend to him in rear of ambulance and call for police attendance. Finally the cavalry arrive, two nth bound & one sth bound. They take control and I can finally relax. Coppers plan to drive vehicle and I point out it's not intact holding out front right disc brake pads in my hand, just some of the many steel parts retrieved from nth bound lanes of traffic. I then point to the pile of alloy, once the front right wheel. They inspect front right and say, yeah, see what you mean. Who are you? I'm the guy from that van way down there. I've been clearing the cables and debris off the road. They thank me and turn their attention to ambulance officer whom says. Looks as if he's fort with the lane keep assist and lost. Conclusion, he's not indicated to change lanes, lane assist tries to retain between lines, he struggled to merge right, finally it's let him do so but straight off the road into safety cables. I left the scene, attend to caravan issue and sets of sth again. On reflection after the event, I've often wondered if those two vehicles that stopped caused this incident by merging into this guy's path, his taken evasive action (no time to indicate) car fort his decision, result, catastrophic. Turn all that shit off whenever you can, it could have killed this guy, let alone destroyed his brand smacking new vehicle. Delivery paperwork was still on passenger seat along with spare fob for Christ Sake.
The D-Max AEB is STILL a drama. Try driving on a two wheel track with grass growing over 30cm down the centre; the AEB will randomly and frequently slam the brakes on and stop the car. On the same trip my 2022 Pajero Sport never did this.

Yes already on the waiting list to test drive, reading the comments above yes agree it is disappointing no rear disk brake, thank goodness there will be plenty of aftermarket players to sort that. I will be interested to see what the rear seat room looks like, you looked very cosy leaning in during the video. Great video
It has a lot of room. Paul sat in one at the global launch a couple months ago and he had plenty legroom
@@anthonyramdin1037 thanks Anthony I am a taller guy so going to a dual cab rear seat room has always been a consideration 👍🏻
Little do they know
The old triton with its 430nm is faster than the 500nm hilux, the bi turbo ranger, the d max , the bt 50 .straight from the factory. Why complain about power figures when it does not even matter in real world driving.
@@warcrabcyber9908 this is so true. They watch some RUclips videos and think "wow this car and that car have coil springs and disc brakes, and an extra 20nm. It's so much better".
Mitsubishi Triton has a strong, 💪 big, impressive face and strong stance
Looks great IMO. Will be interested to see how it sells.
Bizarre to me that any modern car had drum brakes. Off road tech has always been good in Mitsubishi.
Waiting for the triton twin turbo acceleration
The previous gen was already superior to the Hilux in every single possible metric, so this one will be leagues ahead
I've always liked the Triton for it's value proposition and relative capability however they've always been let down by the front suspension design which limits wheel articulation/travel.. Interested to know if this has changed with the new model
A face only a mother can love. Looks OK from other angles.
It'll look a lot better with bullbar and tray setup I reckon
Paul is my go to car guy.
I love it and want one .... All the way from south Africa
Fuel economy and power torque etc are admittedly good, very good infact,
Thanks for saying bakkie. 😊
As long as I can get a cab-chassis manual 4WD I'll definitely consider it.
I wish they would improve the warranty 10 years is great but 200,000km not enough others in this class unlimited km this is what will hold me back
Nice one, Paul
What’s the headroom and vision in front drivers position for a tall (6’6”) person….
Old triton headroom was ok - but almost seemed as if vision was partially obscured by the top of the windscreen/roof
Mitsubishi super-select system is the best on sand!
Pricing looks high but Mitsubishi has never been able to resist heavy discounts - usually after you've just bought one!.
Improved looks.
They’ve always been under rated and extremely well priced compared to other major brands 😎.
Can't wait
Got one on deposit, Feb 2024👍👍, not pulling heavy loads , only a JetSki so laughing, love the look of it GSR coming my way👍👍👍
just got back from a trip to Thailand and there are many of these driving around the streets already in full 4wd form.... (in many different city's) so surprised your still testing "pre production models"?
Seems great improvement. Only items not mentioned are the weights, kerb, payload, GCM & GVM , towing etc?
Fuel tank capacity?
Towing capacity is now 3.5T with 350 towball weight. Better payload than Hilux.
@@roguetrader08 Be interesting to see what Mitsubishi officially release as on some proto types they put any market hitch but they may release the vehicle with lower capacity.
They just change the name plate on hitch, example is Prado, in some international countries Prado tows 3.5T and others 3.0T but its same bar as we get here in Australia.
Don’t believe the Prototype name plates.
@@bushmagpie3312 I may be wrong, but I believe they have definitively said that capacity will be 3.5T for Australia.
@@roguetrader08 don’t think it was in this review but on others yes.
Hopefully the GCM is above 6000kg will be well worth looking into.
They need to have push axle back another 100mm this would be ideal for tray loading of 1T.
It's a bucketload better looking than the last range.
7:00 ... did Paul drop an f bomb? 😂
😂
My own experience is that tritons, especially the first one, are more reliable and durable than most of the more hyped brands
Love the design 🔥❤️❤️🔥
Let’s hope they fixed the driveline shudder that came with the previous generation of Tritons and Pajero sports which considered “normal”
Never heard of that. Own one & in the forums
@@alexandersupertramp1293mate I’m in both tritons and PSs forums and most of them have drivelines shudders and it’s normal apparently. All PSs has it and I own a brand new 2023 Pajero sport QF.
Do the headlights have active shadowing?
Great video looks great can’t wait to drive one 😎
Looks like a massive improvement on the old model. Is there a standard rear diff lock? The snorkel sown on your test car, is it an actual snorkel (sealed unit) or just a raised air take? Thanks for the vid
He showed the rear diff lock button in the interior part of the video.
@@ablet85 cheers mate, missed that bit.
For some reason, you forgot to put the active safety equipment. I always visit your videos, especially for that section. I like this car, can you please let me know how effective are the safety features - adaptive cruise, lane keep assist system, road sign recognition, speed limiter, blind spot monitoring and 360 camera work?
I think I may need to buy one next year 😍😍
Yeah but do the rear windows go all the way down?
Great vehicle, wish we could get it in UK. Well done Mitsubishi and a particular thank you for giving it a real handbrake not the crap EPB fitted to the current Pajero Sport.
Still got my mn triton and never missed a bit. Seeing the new one is convincing me to get one, the only disappointment I see is still drumbrakes in the back 😎
I have a new Ranger with 4 wheel discs. Can’t say I can tell the difference from the drums on the old ranger. I think it’s anon issue
Still value for money compared to the other well known brands.
Nice review on the triton. When are you doing a review on the Toyota Land cruiser 79 series 2024?
Price, rear drum brakes I don’t like but would consider buying one to replace my Nissan D40.
That's funny..I thought I heard Paul mention that the 2024 Triton has rear drum brakes...
I'm currently driving an MR Triton and it is great off road, including sand. Sounds like this one is even better! Engine note sounds good - the current Triton just sounds like a wet fart, even though it performs well.
Seen one the other day. Must be available
Dear Paul, really thank you for these videos, I am from KSA and unfortunately Mitsubishi is not big as Toyota so your videos are helpful. I have some questions if you don't mind,
1- Are the seats wider ( more accommodating) than the older model? I find the older model seats not comfortable as I am overweight 😅.
2- When the the new Montero sport or pajero sport will be revealed?
Looks great, so Navara will also run the same car?
They seem promising, Paul any word on a auto torneau cover or hardlid ??
Definitely keen when they get the tray varient out there
Is this better than the current dmax?
They have finally delivered a Triton that looks pretty good.
Agreed. For the first time ever I actually really like the way the Triton looks. Love the new tough and boxy design!
Is it possible to upgrade the rear brakes to disc brakes.. without voiding the warranty??
Keen to know
It looks quite a bit smaller than it’s competitors
Strangely it has more shoulder room than rangerok.
What transmission did they used? As the previous triton have a very reliable aisin 6 AT.
I wouldn’t mind knowing how it goes towing a 2.5 tonne caravan. Currently have 2011 six 550 Navara and it tows with no issues with stability and power
Given they stuck with the 6spd rather than put in the 8spd the PS had, I just hope they haven't chased a marketing dept desire o
for a brochure only fuel consumption figure by putting in taller diff ratios. I'm also looking forward to a tow test. Would also love to see a back to back comparison, including dyno run, with the MR Triton.
Keen to know what the red car up ahead of was? Didn't look like a Triton.. New Pajero Maybe?
Yeah my ferrari 458 makes me hesitant to buy this too 🙄
@@ianweal3081that story was shit
Paul pls do full test for us ?.. i know older model when diff locker was engaged it lost front wheel traction... Does the same appl to this bakkie ? 😊
The entertainment system is where I would mount my reverse camera.
a new pajero must be in works then too, right ?
Is this the Navara based ute? My Navara still runs on YD25 and pretty satisfied with it, got this after passing over my Wildtrak 2.0 biturbo to my son because I just can't get used to the light steering and unnatural power curve
