  • For many years you could almost say the Triton has been the underdog of the dual cab world & one of the good things about them is they come with a cheaper price tag compared to many of the other utes on the market.
When it comes to all things 4WD suspension - hit up the experts at EFS 4x4 Accessories! 👉 efs4wd.com.au/

before all the hilux cult get in, we have 9 tritons at work, the first of the 2.4 one has a aussie quick spray unit mounted on it, it weighs 3.089t full, that truck works on many mine sites and has now done 230k, only had one rear wheel bearing just recently, standard front suspension, hd rear springs. now the kun hilux that had a lighter unit it replaced didnt even make it to 100k without needing (its a long list), 3 front diffs, 1 hd clutch,so many rear wheel bearings i lost count, steering rack, 4 front wheel bearings, injectors, rear diff, multiple ujs, cvs, front shocks and im sure im missing things. same drivers but we take the triton worse places offroad because it loves it. we do allot less repairs on the tritons than the hiluxs they replaced ( i know because i fix them). and if ya thinking we should get rangers, we dont own a transport trailer to get them off the side of the road.

The days of Hilux's being the top small diesel ute ended with the KZN series. Back when towing anything over 1600kg legally and safely was considered impressive.
I think the Triton has been a quiet achiever for a long time. MK diesels all the way through. Mitsubishi seem to rectify weak points and honour warranty as good as anyone.

I’m quite happy with them. I had them fitted at RFM at Woolloongabba in Brisbane after they recommended them. We had the XTR’s on the front and the Elite on the rear. The additional weight on my car is from a brown Davis long range tank, a tow bar, fridge in tub and a second spare tyre bolted into the tub. For inroad, they’re good. Off-road, they have done at least 5 trips to Fraser Island and we just completed the Hay River Track through the Simpson Desert. That included hundreds oh kilometres of severe corrugated tracks. They survived without any issues.

My first 4x4 was a turbo diesel MJ triton from the 90s. I paid $3500 for it, had nearly 400000 on the clock but went like an animal, had almost no flex, but due to its light weight and broad torque band could outclimb Toyotas from the same era (even with diff locks)
That car had beautifully matched gear ratios and a perfectly matched turbo, and punched well above its weight.

The reason you should choose the Triton over the D-Max is for the centre-diff Super Select II transmission which you can switch into 4-High in the rain on sealed roads - which you cannot do with the standard D-Max without risking driveline wind-up. A few grand cheaper and the Triton is literally more capable.

Ok so here is my 10 cent's.... I have had an MQ and hated it, I went to a BT-50 after that, it was ok but a bit meh!...I was considering a ranger (the new Volkswagen one) and my brother bought one and i wasn't super impressed. I bit the bullet an got the MV GLS after all the PR hype Mitsubishi were putting out there and I was pleasantly surprised. I have done a 2" lift with 32" tyres and bar work..... nothing crazy but drives great and is awesome offroad. Downsides? turning traction control off in 4wd hi is a pain in the ass (endless scrolling through menus involved). Also the driver monitoring system is the worst thing known to mankind (how Jesse put up with it in this video is beyond me) I turn it off on every drive because it so annoying. Without the DMS this would be one of the best dual cab 4x4's on the market today backed by a solid warranty.

Have you got the DMS software update though??? Most of the new Tritons sold from beginning of the month had the update applied. Most people have gotten the update during service or made an unscheduled visit to get the update. I admit it is a pain and my service is booked for two weeks time, so I am Looking forward to that. But by most accounts the software change has watered down the monitor considerably. Would be nice to have a complete off option though, otherwise, these are a solid rig.

Like any new dual/single cab utes it need time to break in to really see where it sits in the eco system of the market. The fact its price is near level with most other models it’s got a high bar to meet, where’s your previous models it’s was a bang for buck, paid what you get workhorse type. AdBlue personally is a real nuisance and worse if you can’t up level the capacity if you plan to go more remote. By the end of the day it’s still cheaper than hilux and ranger so it’s got that going for it at least (ain’t counting dmax with that statement).
I saw this that the recent National 4x4 show in Melbourne when Opposite lock was showcasing their new bulbar for it, it does help a bit with that hideous bulldog face, and honestly it could still do what many have done to the older tritons, just more for either the retires with towing, or new drivers that wants a brand new Ute but on the low end of the spectrum in terms of cost.

After deciding not to jump into a next gen Ranger from my PX3 ranger, I copped a new MV GSR. Loving the underdog, sad the new model is kinda being slept on. I've had more questions and interests from clients i visit each day about the MV compared to when I had the Ranger. There is genuine interest out there for these, and they shouldn't be overlooked. Not a Triton tragic by any means, but I do not regret the purchase. I had no expectations for these (after owning an MQ and absolutely hating it), only a few boxes to tick, it did that and more surprisingly. There are a few reviews online that don't do these things justice sadly, but I get a sense those reviewers are paid by other brands, sometimes it's blatantly obvious. Are these things perfect - No. Do they have everything - No. Would I buy another - Yep! Strange to admit that, but they are a significant leap ahead of the MQ/MR model and definitely a solid option to a Ranger, which costs more anyway. But as I always say, ignore the online videos and reviews and drive one in person - some dealers will let you take one for 24 hours.....

@@TORTLESSS Yes it is possible to have different ratios in the same model of box. But in this instance, the published specs show the gearbox ratios are exactly the same for MR and MV.
I was disappointed they didn't use the 8spd from the PS. With 3.9 diffs you would have had a lower 1st gear and equal top final drive ratios (box+diff). Using the 8spd with the 4.272:1 diffs would give you a materially lower first gear and still retained a viable (in real world use) top overdrive.
Given the manuals come with 3.6/3.7:1 diffs, you could drastically improve the performance on and off road by swapping to the auto 3.9 or 4.272:1 diffs
