  • This video will show you how to install and fit a recessed, concealed shower valve. We show you how to chase your pipes into the wall, how to chop out the wall to the right depth for your shower valve and how to successfully connect your water connections and pressure test.
I realise I forgot a few things (!) so 1. I forgot my gloves! 2. I forgot to show you how to square the shower valve, or use wood/packers to square it off. Check my Insta as there's a post there about it!

Great Video its one of those jobs that may need more than basic DIY knowledge can be a challenge . I have done a few on older property double skin wall no cavity and few stud walls the old bricked houses are solid compared to new brick ones and I found rather that chassis out for taps it's quicker to go straight through first skin take a few bricks out and only chase pipes in neatly. Put a peace of ply or timber then expansion foam which will actually bond your taps in. I usually use foam on door liners and widows. Foam is used to speed working time and it bonds like shit when expanded some I know some companies use this stuff on door liners without screws. I still put the odd one or two. Great videos I have learned a few things from this guy. And he has a brilliant sense of humour

Thanks again for the video. Useful info as always they are a pain in the arse to fit. I always recommend exposed bar valves. I'm glad you mentioned, Loctite 577 and pressure testing. My most recent one I had in place for maybe a week and I would run the hot/cold head/hose for periods to make sure there were no leaks before I drylined the wall. I wouldn't install one without Loctite on those threads.

Hi James, thank you very much for yet another brilliant and utterly professional video. As a carpenter, I’d most likely be inclined to frame a 100mm wall rather than chase the breeze block, oh yes! And I’d probably think of few designs for resulting alcoves. Thanks a bunch mate. 👍

Have recently purchased one of these concealed units.. it is going straight back in the box and back to the retailer after watching your video James, by the way what a fantastic video it is.
The shower we brought has NO instructions in and if it was not for finding your video would not have a scooby do (Clue) on how to fit it.
However I am quite lucky that I have a 300mm recess behind but it is the (IF) I need to do any maintenance afterwards.
So thank you James for this brilliant Video.
    Regards
    Steve.

No doubt James! Despite the fact that foam is designed to seal pipe entries I heard it could eat through the brickwork too. Naaaasty stuff.

  • @kingspunkbubble

For my shower valve I used the Bristan Descent kit. This was the shallowest valve I could find. Also bear in mind that on a brick wall you also have the extra thickness of the render and the tiles which can be as much as three centimetres.

HI GUYS! A few mistakes in this vid...or at least OMISSIONS! 1. To get the depth of cut, use the disc depth gauge or with power off measure the depth of the blade with a ruler. 2. Use a ruler/tape to confirm each bit of chasing/wall removal you do. 3. Doing this does not weaken the wall to any substantial point....if you think it does enjoy your foil hat! 3. Finally you can use plywood as a base or packers plus a set square to make sure your valve is square before filling/covering. I did film that bit but for some reason the card got corrupted and by then I'd knocked the bloddy wall down! Anyway, please follow my Instagram on www.plumberparts.co.uk/social.php?social=Instagram THANKS!

What can I say! I fitted the 3 way version of these into a BRICK wall. Everything you say is true. They are badly designed. The brick is impossible to level; I had to cut the recess then render it smooth. Expanding PU foam is essential to hold everything in. The dust is a killer. The most expensive recessed valves are no better designed than the cheap stuff. Everything is tough and I'm a sparks , not a plumber. so it was all a steep learning curve and I struggled. The result is beautiful and your video recognition of how challenging it is has been therapy :) Might even do my C&G in plumbing now.

Hi. How do you ensure that the pipes do not build up condensation which then transmits to the brickwork?
I’ve stripped the tiles off the back of the shower wall with dad was coming through to the adjacent side.
I’m not entirely sure but I think it might be condensation on the pipes leading from the thermostatic valve to the showerhead. Which is particularly possible if you have very cold showers in the morning

shower body on an exterior wall without insulation is a no no. hammer drill and a 1/2 inch bit chase to floor. Shower body, stubs, and penny value made up before you fit it. ptfe 3 wraps works perfect. Setting body if you cant screw use wooden shims to anchor top and bottom of valve. Make sure you have valve right side up. Some shower bodys if it is install upside down it will not allow hot water to pass on cold inlet.

Hi James - love the videos. When you fitted the compression joints to the valve, how did you make sure they ended up facing in the right direction? When I fully tighten the ones I have into the body the don't always point where I need them to, to connect with the pipework. Do you use extra PTFE to limit how far the screw into the body? Leave the fitting slightly loose and add sealant or some other secret plumber's trick?

@@Masq09 I thought the same, spent ages trying to figure it out, currently waiting on tiles and then got the dreaded bit where you screw rainfall and male elbow in, think loctite 55 looks like the best idea to use. Hope and pray?

Jim, loved the video mate but I personally would have appreciated some sort of flying kick to knock the wall down. Just think something slightly more acrobatic would have ended well. And it looked like the wall fell on your foot too. Hope you're ok bro.

hi there - my plumber fitted this at an angle (!) - therefore if/when water runs down the wall it goes onto the controls themselves (the back panel has silicon behind it so that's not a problem) and then trickles backwards into the cavity behind the tiles. I am worried it will eventually damage the copper pipes. Any quick fixes for this? Everything has been tiled so it is a case of doing something to the controls themselves to stop water trickling into where the crack that needs to move to let them turn. Welcome any advice - thank you!

Annabella Forbes Schoolboy error to fit crooked! Really needs re-aligning. If the plate is siliconed, how is water getting inside? Copper damage is not your problem, but damage to everything else in your cavity and downstairs!? Defo needs sorting and not left as is.

Originally the "breeze" bit of block was a synonym for ash and "proper" breeze block is made from the ash from coal fired power stations and gas works. Truly horrible to stuff to work with, and my best wishes to anybody who has to channel that stuff out as it's amazing hard and brittle and full of coarse inclusions.
That stuff is thermalite block and, in comparison, is like carving through butter.
nb. whilst those concealed valves are nice, I'd never, ever want one in a house of mine as there's too much embedded in the wall. They might not be as neat, but bar mixers for me with no compression joints stuck in the wall.

You’re a great tradesmen and fun to watch, but remember people that if you do this on a party wall there’s something called “the party wall act” and if you’re found breaching the act the homeowner and the tradesmen are liable for legal costs and repair’s to the adjoining house owner!

If the wall ends up rough/irregular you can simply stick a piece of cement board inside to create a flat surface. Do not use wood or plasterboard.

So thats how to put one in - what if you have one of these recessed concealed shower valves & it no longer works_- How do I take it out? Cut the pipes, so I can start again with something more straightforward? serious suggestions please
