    VIDEO PATCH 1.01:
-at this point I am pretty sure this was just a fun intro to the album with some fun tie ins to the album story/message. Listening to other Lupe albums/mixtapes I noticed he starts a lot of them with a spoken message/different type of song which relates to the story/journey he is about to take us on. "They thought it was cool.." on The Cool comes to mind (genius.com/Lupe-fiasco-baba-says-cool-for-thought-annotated). I think this and in the event of typhoon before it are fun/small teases of the album, then the album REALLY starts on Manilla.

Lupe stated in Spanish, because the fist slaves where tooken to S. America... The first ships, went from cape cod to Spain where the decree was made that they would take the Americas. The first slaves were then transported from Spain back to cape cod. Where I believe most were in the belief they would be freed. Because they were in their Homeland. Then to s. America, when made possible, they moved it to Central then the US, Canada and so on and so fourth..... The main language is Spanish or Latin, so he had to open with Spanish..... As you know they slaves farmed the drugs that's why they were tooken to those lands. All the lands he speaking of is high drug markets. So Me knowing Lupe, he's telling a story in a story, which was code to the slaves that heard it. And if asked they would return to work. And instead of singing, they would whistle. The slave masters would get pissed from all the whistling because he didn't know what it meant. .. so when he say bas, that's the sound of the rifle breaking the whistle.....
Whistling was a code that was used when words couldn't be spoken, slaves often used whistling so that they could locate one another. Each having identifying whistles.... The whites took it up later, as a sign they were busy at work. But was slave code....

SO If I could talk with Lupe about DROGAS the questions I would have are...
    1. Why is the first track in spanish?
    2. Why did he mention going to specifically Barranquilla?
    3. Is this just a fun intro to the album or is there more to it than that?
    4. DROGAS aka DRUGS aka dont ruin us god said, who is god talking to? who/what is us?
    What do you guys think?
To further explain some of my ideas in the video,
    - I think that this track isn't meant to be too deep, but I do think he started in spanish because of the Spanish early involvement with slavery. There isn't much to really breakdown, unless there is and I'm missing it lol
-On the chorus, I think Lupe is talking more so about what he stands for, with himself and his music being tools he uses to make the world better. While others rap about drugs and glorify that lifestyle, he is promoting peace and positivity through his music in hopes that he teaches and inspires people today to be better and love one another.
-I don't know if Lupe is entirely anti-drug, maybe more so anti glorifying or being addicted to drugs. Haven't seen his position on that but when I mention there are good & bad drugs, I mean that you can be addicted to doing good just like you can be addicted to bad things, SUCH AS drugs.
This song was honestly the hardest for me to breakdown because it was spanish and I was looking for more meaning then there may have been. Manilla I think will be MUCH funner and more straight forward to try and breakdown, look forward to getting into that one soon!

      4. My initial thought when I first heard of the concept was slavery ruining the african ancestors and trying to reclaim that ruination as something powerful. However, when Lupe was starting the album rollout on IG, he provided an origin story where a chaplain on one of the slaveships also said the spanish equivalent of “Don’t Ruin Us, God Said” just before murdered by a LongChain. So, I don’t think the “Us” refers to any single group of people, but everybody from the slaves to the slavers. It’s an album conflicted between wanting long overdue revenge and still trying to spread the love that MLK dreamed of.
Since the concept isn’t limited to literal slavery, I also thought of mexican drug cartels and how that plays into mental slavery in modern times. Hadn’t noticed the whistling though, nice catch. The twisted innocence does fit the duality on Haile Selassie and it’s a subtle way of transitioning into the rest of the album.

He is an artist and being an artist myself you want to create and relate no one more related in American culture than the ghettos are usually young black and Latinos so why not show respect and honor for my relatives language and culture i am actually working on a reggaeton song dealing with nationality and how we are all Americans on this continent of America but only judge each other off of skin color

  • @luopingnan15

I will say Hailie Selassie came out like 6 years ago so the whistling probably isn't related. Everything else you explained helped SO much though

Not my full theory rather just a first thought... Spanish was famously forced onto the aboriginal people of Central America just as English was forced onto the slaves. To put simply, it is drawing a contrast between the album title “Drogas” and the theme of the album being slavery

  • @soupsandwich.

I still don’t understand what the drug or the drogas part has to do with the concept of the album.

    • @CELLY96
      @CELLY96  5 лет назад +2

Well get there lol I’m not 100% clear on that either yet... I know that is more so focused on in the latter half of the album. I believe there is a connection between how both are illegal now but still alive in certain ways (slavery today could be human trafficking or people signed to record labels) and drugs is still drugs some illegal some allowed all being sold somewhere legally or illegally. Don’t even want to think about it yet I’ll get there when the time comes lmao
