Lupe unintentionally makes a lot of people feel dumb, which can be a blow to one's ego. And for that reason, they'll never give him credit for being a top 5. They'll give it to someone that is less challenging to listen to.
No, he does it very intentionally. He knows he makes people feel dumb. He doesn't care. He says it all the time. He made a whole song about it (Dumb It Down). It's wild that painting/song can be used as an allegory to Lupe's place, influence, structure and status in the music business. I remember when Tyler put out that tweet about how the culture had failed Lupe 😢
And when you think about it, it has some real truth to it. Those who know, know exactly what & why that is. The culture & fans chose to back an employee who was in it for corporate America (big banks), rather than the artist who decided to speak truth to power. He tried to get people to think and see past the figurehead and look at certain long standing structures. Same thing kind of happened with Ab-Soul but in a different and more abstract way. It's so sad & it really depresses me, at times.
But Lupe is such an amazing artist, in general, and is my absolute favorite..in Any genre or form of creative expression and art.

IF you want to look at this deeper, I think its possible Lupe is equating himself to Jesus in The Last Supper, being that he is the most talented rapper with an actual message that can help "save" a lot of people, but things have been getting in the way of him getting his message across (his label atlantic, other rappers putting out meaningless music that is popular, people not buying his new album). I assume he put some meaning behind it because its Lupe for one, but also because I don't think he would just do a track for no reason especially based on such a significant piece of art. Moral of the story is, go listen to Drogas Wave if you like this or enjoy hip hop that has a concept, meaning, lyrics to decipher and incredible production (or just cop the WAVY merch on the site which is also pretty dope) prizecrew.us/
