      I'm just now replacing my PC after about a decade. I'm currently running a 4790k and an overclocked 980ti with 16gbs ram. It was pretty high end for the time, my friends called me crazy for having that much memory, but I've been able to go the longest without upgrading, so it feels worth catching some flack. What finally did it for me was Helldiver 2 dropping below 45fps on low. I'm planning to go fairly high end again, and build an ATX system running a 7950xd3D, 64 gigs of ram, and a 4070ti super or 4080 if I'm feeling goofy.

      I had a zotac 980ti with an intel 6500 from a pc i built in March of 2017
      it was a fantastic build and served me well
      I replaced it with an amd 7800 x3d and a sapphire 7900 xtx back in November of 2023.
      aside from losing out on about 200$(I bought some parts on a deal prior to black Friday and they ended up being discounted further during black friday) I could not be happier with the build and it's performance
      ill be happy if I can get anywhere close to the performance longevity of my previous build with my new one
      if im being honest aside from a few niche titles(helldivers included) I probably could have gotten another year or two out of my old build

      Nothing wrong with buying older hardware at a smoking discount.

      The last gen products generally win in this metric.

    • @Heakz
      @Heakz 4 месяца назад +2

      Or just buy the one that is better value, don't "always" do or assume anything; it is pretty straight forward, sometimes even when the nascnet generation has little improvement there are times when they are the same or even cheaper than older generations (not uncommon for GPUs or CPUs) when buying new. HOW you measure the value of something is very subjective, a product of your own situation (budget, performance target, time, etc.). If the previous gen is still performant enough and cheaper than get it but don't just assume the current tech is more less value, it can sometimes be straight up cheaper side by side; the other day I was at a store and every single 14th gen intel CPU was less than their 13th gen counterpart.

    Just an fyi, at least for nvidia cards, you need to have v-sync enabled as well as g-sync enabled in the nvidia control panel to make sure tearing does not happen if your refresh rate exceeds your monitors refresh rate. Otherwise, g-sync is not actually fully enabled

  • @gustavo_vanni
    @gustavo_vanni 4 месяца назад +7

    Regarding the screen tearing question, Paul, unfortunately, when the FPS is below or above the VRR range, you still get screen tearing. I suppose that was what the viewer was asking about. And to address that, you would need to set an FPS limit in your GPU software within the range of your monitor's VRR, so your games can't exceed that FPS.

    • @bobbysworldoftech1564
      @bobbysworldoftech1564 4 месяца назад

      Also you can enable "Enhanced Sync" for AMD to simply "drop off" extra frames above the VRR capability of the monitor and eliminates tearing if a game doesn't allow for frame rate limiting. 👍

    If you enable frame sync, the game can still run faster than the panel. You need to enable a frame rate limiter or increase the settings quality to keep the frame rate from going so high that it leaves the sync range. Once it leaves sync range, the tech doesn't work.

    For me the big reason to continue using water cooling is the sound. My previous rig had a 10980XE with a 4.9ghz all-core overclock on its own 560mm loop, and a pair of Titan RTX with auto overclock on their own 560mm loop. Nothing I ever did with it caused the fans to ramp up - was great. I respect a good air cooler but hearing the CPU fan burst up and down with CPU load can be a bit distracting.

    With ai becoming more and more prevalent, do you think we will eventually have dedicated NPU's in custom PCs?
    I can imagine that in 5 years, when building a pc you would buy your CPU, GPU, and NPU, and a motherboard designed with an extra socket and cooler mounting for the NPU.
    Do you think that it will be good for the industry for ai processing to be separated from graphics processing?
    I think, professional systems (like software developers, maybe digital artists?) could benefit from a high end CPU and NPU, but could save and get a fairly basic GPU

    A child who only plays one game and is already getting solid performance from it and wants a pink water loop for christmas is an exception, not the norm. In general, for people who play a variety of games and have budgets to keep in mind, spending the money on better hardware instead of on watercooling less powerful hardware is the correct answer. And saying that is absolutely not gatekeeping.

    In europe this "Black Friday" time is mostly just a scam. According to price histories the prices go up constantly just before that and then get "discounts" hit to just bring prices back to normal. These "discounts" are also used to get rid of unwanted and outdated inventory. Rarely you can get lucky and find something actually worth while - but that is really rare. Usually summer is the best time here to get those "big parts" like CPUs, Motherboards and GPUs. Due to the holliday time in the EU businesses like to discount these products to keep the market flowing. After summer prices gradually climb again - until the "fake discount times" come up. One thing to consider is that if you are after previous generation hardware, the winter time is good to buy since shops want to get rid of old hardware. But if you are after all the already overpriced new and shiny things where a motherboard costs more than the CPU - nearly as much as a GPU, winter is a bad time to buy. Prices will go down at March again after that period.

I do some gaming, but I also need one that will work well for video editing (1080). I think either the 3060 or the 6650xt are going to be my best bet, but I'd love to hear your opinion! Thanks!

    I recently built myself (after my old Dell prebuilt finally died... no more money into the 10 year old workhorse) an older model PC. Ryzen 5600g, 64gigs of ram 2tb NVME and no video card (hence the G). I can play all the games I generally play (the most "recent" game I play is Galactic Civilizations III) plus I can do 1440p video with no sweat. No RGB, even though my case has a glass door. :) I'm old. Fancy lights are for the youngsters...
    I didn't even get a better than stock cooler. All in all, I was in the bag for $500 or so with an 850w gold PSU. The most expensive bit was the CPU. Once I find a GPU that I can tolerate (I'm not a heavy PC gamer...nethack works on my Raspberry Pi) price-wise, I might add it. But for now, this PC will be my workhorse for another 6 to 10 years. :)
    Linux is awesome like that. :)

    Black Friday sales haven't been a thing in my country for years, you see a particular GPU go up in price a week or so before then when the sale starts it drops to the price it was before the price hike so you aren't saving anything. Gigabyte 4090 went from $2899 to $3250 then $3500 now back to $3250 and they call it a sale.. Just buy what you need and try to get the best deal at the time, example would be the 7900XTX over here which is $1389 compared to the 4080S which is $1900 for the cheapest variant. Either will give you a great gaming experience but the XTX will deliver a great gaming experience at a significantly cheaper price, blah blah RT blah blah content creation yea I get it heard it a million times by now.
    As for air vs water, smart people are buying Ryzen 7600, 7700x, 7800x3D where you don't need a water cooler and older socket AM4 owners are buying 5700x3D, 5800x3D to get some more life out of their old platforms and with saying that the Thermalright Pearless is fantastic for $50. You only need a loop or AIO if you are buying Intel and tbh why would you bother at this point except for brand loyalty? 5800x3D, 7800x3D are the better processors for obvious reasons while being cheaper and not requiring expensive cooling.
    Its not a terrible time to build a new PC right now depending on what you choose, in fact I would urge people if they are considering a new PC to build one right now since apparently higher prices are incoming AGAIN. If you stick to a Ryzen processor and Radeon GPU you can build a mid range, lower end or high end system at prices that are at least palatable. Its a terrible time to build a system if you go with an Intel processor and Nvidia GPU.
    There is no difference between a Radeon 6800 and 3090 when using adaptive sync and capping FPS to your panels refresh rate, only difference is I'm the numpty that paid $3250 while my mate got his 6800 for $630 brand new.. Brand loyalty doesn't pay off, just buy whats the best value and enjoy your games.

    Hey Paul! Love your videos been watching for years. I'm kinda a nerdy trucker that loves watching what you have to say tech wise. Always find your talking about custom cables for pc builds but I've noticed you've never talked about custom riser cables(PCI cables). I have a SFF PC I built but the riser cable that came with my phanteks evolv shift xt is unfortunately bout 3 to 4 inches shorter then what I need. Forcing me to run my RTX 3090 Founders edition without the active water cooling back. (You can find my SFF build on LTT form if you look up SILVER MISFIT)
    My question for you is.
    How & who do I contact to get a custom riser(PCI) cable made to fit my needs? Since when I asked Phanteks if they had a little longer one for that case I was told no & they wouldn't tell me how long the one that comes with the case was 😒😒😒

    In the U.S. our government is going to bring back tariffs of up to 25% for computer parts that are produced in China. If you plan on building a new computer you will want to do it before October 1st which begins the 1st quarter of the U.S. fiscal year. I was going to wait until DEC2024/JAN2025 but that's off the table now. I've already picked up a couple of components but what I really need to get is a motherboard, processor, memory, fans, and Windows 11. KC

    I liked your explanation of when to buy tech. Five or six years ago I was looking to upgrade my AMD RX 2400g CPU, I really wanted the the 2700x but couldn't afford it. And when I could finally, I saw a tech guru that people seem to think is Jesus for some reason (and that should have been my warning). He spent a good bit of time explaining that alot of fear mongering was going on and we should all resist the urge to panic-buy CPUs specifically. Well, he had been in the tech field much longer than, so I put my wallet back in my pocket. And a mere 2 weeks later there was not a 2700x CPU to be found anywhere in the free world.
    I think that sounds a bit bitter. I may be a bit salty still after all these years.
    BTW 3 weeks after watching his "information" I bought a 3600x which has been serviceable, although not what I wanted.

    @paulshardware Think back to the first computer you ever built... How did you learn to build said computer? What CPU/GPU did you use? Was it ALL new, or were parts of it used? Please share any memories from the process.
    I don't remember how old I was, but if memory serves I hadn't completed fourth grade yet. I built my first computer which had a 16Mhz Intel 486 and I don't think it had 2MBs of ram. I don't remember what GPU I used, and the first GPU I remember buying was a ATI Radeon X700 over a decade later. This was back when you could brew a pot of coffee in the time it took to boot into Windows 3.1, this might be an exaggeration because it was still years before my first cup of coffee. I remember showing my elementary school teachers how to do things on a computer because they didn't know DOS commands, some had trouble even turning it on.
    Learning to build the computer is among the best memories I have with my father, and I highly recommend you build memories like this with your daughter as early and as often as you can.

    Freesync/Gsync has a VRR range, lets say 80-144fps, and VRR only works while the framerate is within that VRR range. So it is entirely possible to have screen tearing while also having VRR correctly enabled. This is why both AMD and Nvidia say that you should use Vsync along side VRR. it will prevent your framerate from exceeding the VRR window and ensure it stays enabled.

Even though I clean my PC every couple of months with a can of compressed air, the internals of my system remain very dusty (the dust is practically baked on to my motherboard and other components). My case is a Corsair 200R and I have added magnetic dust filters to the back and sides (but nothing would fit on top). So my question is: what features should I look for in my next case? Lots of air flow? Minimal air flow? Lots of fans? Minimal fans? Could you please give me a case recommendation? Thanks.

    I’d like to buy another 2tb SSD to put in it, I’m certain it has another slot for one.
    Here’s my question. Is there a way to install the additional drive and have windows 11 ‘see’ a 4tb drive rather than two 2tb drives without deleting the OS and drivers and such that are already on the original drive?
    If no, is there an easy way to accomplish my goal? (Cloning a drive, reinstalling windows and drivers from a “rescue USB” or something?

    4:43 Tearing happens even with G-Sync on when you exceed the monitor's refresh rate if you do not have V-sync enabled, and if you also you don't cap your max frame rate 1 less than your monitor's refresh rate.
    Can't believe Paul didn't mention this. He didn't answer the actual question correctly and just defaulted to "You didn't enable G-Sync correctly hurr durr". You need BOTH G-Sync and V-sync on.
    This is what Nvidia actually recommends, and Blurbusters has tons of writeups on this.

    A Romantic understanding sees it primarily in terms of immediate appearance.

    The Romantics need the Classical's to survive in modern society, then they decorate it for their own benefit.

    Paul, your information about screen tearing and VRR is not entirely correct; it is still possible for screen tearing to occur with VRR enabled (correctly) when the GPU's framerate is substantially higher than the monitor's maximum refresh rate. To avoid this, either cap your GPU framerate to your monitor's refresh rate using something like RTSS, or enable VSync in any games where this becomes a problem. Despite common misunderstandings, enabling VSync and VRR (FreeSync or G-Sync) at the same time gives you the strengths of both without the glaring weaknesses. For example, when your framerate dips below the monitor's refresh rate with both VSync and VRR enabled, your framerate does not get cut in half, your monitor just syncs its refresh to the slightly lower framerate, and there will be zero screen tearing.

    The best time to build a new PC, is when you have the money to buy the parts. If you're worried about something new coming out, relax and don't worry about it. There is always something new coming out. Some New CPU, or GPU, or memory standard. If you keep waiting because of something new coming out, you will forever be waiting.

    I mean... if its about building something from the ground up, there usually isnt a best or worse time, because the amount of parts you need will likely compensate for each other and you will end up in some average price territory. Here its probably worth it to keep upgradability in mind, but take some more cheaper CPUs or GPUs first, if you expect new parts coming out in the following months, so you can sell the recently bought part (due to lower price, you will "loose" less money) and then go for the "wanted" GPU or CPU.
    Besides those two components tho there are no parts where its is imo worth it to go with that "tactic", because things like PSUs, MoBos, SSDs or RAM dont climb in performance on a yearly basis and a good case will be fine in 5 years as well.
    But that said... most people dont want to upgrade on a yearly basis anyway and i think for them its fine if they just take something solid from the start and dont do unnecessary speculation. platforms like AM5 will be relevant over the coming years anyway and unless people want to play the overpriced and unpolished beta versions of games at their release, most GPUs wont make or break their experience. Something in your system will always be "outdated", unless you have fun burning money for nothing. People going crazy about these things is only a matter of playing the very newest releases or not, because they are hype-victims. Older games usually run perfectly fine even on lower cost hardware and they are usually better than most current releases anyway and often even look better - just saying Battlefield 4 or Arkham Knight. lol

    Best time to build a PC is mid August. But only the first year of GPU cycle. Right now we are in the second year of GPU cycle. Which is when last 2 weeks before new GPU release are probably the best to profit from early adopters trying to get rid of old stuff. But it's like betting on what the next gen will be and also the most hyped time. And for the rest of the system mid August is still better or same than "Black Friday". So...
    Just buy what you want when you want. Waiting for too long isn't healthy or profitable. Time is money.

    I think if my PC turns on and accomplishes all the tasks you need it to, there's no need to upgrade.
    My reply to form over function was, it's doesn't matter how pretty a PC looks, if it doesn't function, it's not useful, once you have achieved function, then go for form. His comment proves that point and contradicts himself in his own comment. His daughter's PC already had the function, so he had the function before he improved the form, and it doesn't matter how pretty her PC looks, she's not going to be smiling at all if it doesn't function. I was agreeing with him right up to the "gate keeping" part, then he lost me. It's nothing more than trying to guilt people into taking his stance on it, accusing others of doing exactly what he himself is doing with that "gate keeping" comment, do as I say, if you don't, you are wrong. I do however agree that the smiles and happiness of your child is just as important (But you still need function to get those smiles), letting my kid pick out parts then guide him to build his own PC was priceless.

  • @fateunleashed9680
    @fateunleashed9680 4 месяца назад

    While I enjoy the fact that smiles per $ is good to aim for with the little ones, you have to see it for what it is. A child that is impressionable enjoying something, which is great, don't get me wrong, just saying accept this only applies to children that's all. Sure, I'd have upgraded the hardware a touch while I was already having to take the system apart. By only adding the water loop the system will need an upgrade sooner, and you have more work to do with the loop added. So you're going to need to make it into a learning experience as part of having the loop she wanted. Smiles AND frames per $ with less work/downtime is best.

    If you have time and proper planning, you can plan to buy or upgrade a PC for cheaper. Like how some parts like storage or gpu might go on sale or have an influx of stock so prices can go cheaper.
    By buying over time you lower the total cost of the PC. Remember the newest and greatest might not be the best deal too. Older hardware go down in prices and go on sale often.
