Hearing the childhood origins of his path to being a firearms curator was especially comforting to me, many of us were much like Jonathan when we saw guns on media and read books about 'em as kids... though now Jon's authored his own books about guns too, so it's come full circle X3

Some factions have reasons of why they adorn their weapons and armor with decoration, the blood Angels love doing art and poetry to keep their curses at bay and so the art includes making their personal weapons a canvas 😁 also the parchment looking ones are called purity seals and I think almost every space marine chapter uses them! Yeah, the iron sights always irked me, too. Especially since Halo actively did away with them on their standard rifle for that exact reason. One thing about not wearing their helmets, apparently Space Marines aren't "really" supposed to go into battle without them, the art and miniatures just depict a lot of the named characters with their faces on display so you can tell them apart. The only in-story exception to this is the Space Wolves who prefer to take their helmets off as much as they can get away with to keep their noses unobstructed. They have an enhanced sense of smell due to being descended from early space colonists who experimented with gene splicing and made themselves part wolf.

    • @andromidius

Except that Halo’s weapons *do* have iron sights present on them. If you were to look at one of the more recent assault rifle models you would see that it has a collapsing iron sight on top. As for why they and 40k would still have iron sights, quite simply, redundancy. If your fancy aim assist tech fails or is disabled how do you expect to aim.

The reason you'd shoulder the firearm with a HUD type aiming system would be to follow the principles of marksmanship. Just because you don't need to look down the sights, doesn't mean you don't have to hold the weapon steady. They probably would also lean their head towards the weapon to make sure their point of aim is more aligned with the weapon to be as accurate as possible.

With the US Army having adopted the SIG Spear XM7, do you think that the rest of NATO will follow to .277 Fury, or continue with the trend of adopting more 5.56 carbine/rifles? As a second part, do you think the General Dynamics/True Velocity bullpup would have been a better option?

So part of the 40k thing that answers a lot of the "why are thy using things that are redundant/poorly-designed" in Imperial gear is tradition and lack of understanding. They don't _know_ why they build things they way they do, the actual technology and designs have been lost to the ages, with factory production being a religious ritual. These are people where standard gun care involves praying and waving incense over the thing. Design flaws are seen as required parts of the holy artifact, and to try to correct or improve them heresy.
The Adeptus Mechanicus are quietly trying to push things forward, but it's a minefield of zealotry for them. Human tech does NOT advance in the 41st millennium.

The sights and scopes probably exist in case of failure in the armors targeting. Space Marines are supposed to be the epitome of investment, they have many redundant measures to ensure their survival and effectiveness

Fun fact about the melta. Its 16 time hotter than the surface of the sun. And the multi melta is TWICE OF THAT

To be fair its only been recently that the boltrifles ect have stocks. Earlier models didnt before the primaris. Also in videos they never used to shoulder them. I suspect its a balance thing for the game. As for the sights, nthe sights were there for when they didnt have a helmet on or the target system failed. But with the new style models thats all changed now.

The Backpacks as you called them are portable fussion generators that power the Armor of the Marine but can also provide power for some weapons like for example the Multi-Melta.
Backpack designs with Ammo Belts seemingly also exist but look different as the ammo is set beliw the reactor

40k is as messed up as it is because they lost a lot of things. Tldr they were absolutely ballin at the year 25k, but suffered from a civilization wide Terminator style AI uprising, immediately followed by 5000 years of intense warp storms (No FTL travel or communications available, caused by the Eldar accidentally). By the year 30k even, they are really reluctant to use anything from back then because they have no idea how to fix it, can barely control it, etc.

for the heavy bolter, the reason it has the connection to the back pack is that its not ammo cables, they are electric wires powering the gun. instead of a conventional explosive charge to get the bolt round out of the gun. the heavy bolters use an electric charge think something like a minigun power supply. then the bolt round fires its own propellant once far enough away from the gun. the power cables are just connected to the backpack reactor of the power armor.

The way I see it WH40k humanity is past its prime but they have clues of old designs in a way similar to Chinese gunsmiths making copies of Mausers pre-WW1 they keep some elements which are not functional because it's in the pictures they have. It might also have to do with once functional gibblets like rear sight or external hammer evolving over time into decorative as the design changes.

Could Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries museum in the UK perhaps have a look at the weapons from Ratchet & Clank 1 (2002)? I think he would find the absurdity amusing.

For my taste, the heavy bolter of the Primaris Space Marines seems a bit ridiculous. The old version of the space marines seems better and more dangerous. (and more logical...GW and their strange model ideas)

Could you guys do a 2 in 1 Vermintide2 and TW Warhammer franchise guns? Warhammer fantasy needs some love, and lots of interesting guns/firearms in those games/that universe.

A heavy bolter fed by a back-mounted ammo pack is an existing design that they could have drawn from and its a little odd that they didn't.

In SM2, if your character is helmetless and you aim down sight, the character closes one eye and keeps one open for aiming. Just one of the little details that make this game even more special.
