When to upgrade:
1. When it stop working
2. Not meeting minimum requirements of new game/software you want to use
3. You just realize you are rich AF
I upgrade mine when it starts struggling with games.
4. You actually need a new PC that is around the same spec as your old one and you have budget to spare.
game til it dies xD
5. Wait for third party benchmarks

I think videos like this one really show that Jay is interested in helping his viewers, not in satisfying the needs of manufacturers.
No manufacturer would support this message, because they want people to buy as much of the newest stuff as they can.
Thank you for being honest and showing you're primarily loyal to your audience.
Yea, Jay really seems like a nice person.
Not to mention that a major advantage of pc in terms of price is their modularity, so you only need to spend the money when you can afford to, manufacturers would love to get away from giving choice to consumers and force you to spend a lump sum on a pre-built machine
Very well said.😊
I mean realistically today manufacturers have enough demand they don't need jay shilling atm. him keeping this message consistent even when sales are low and manufacturers would like/need more people buying means a lot more than this video at this time (which ofc all kudos to Jay he's always consistent and proven loyal to his fans)
Lol, why wouldn’t he? He makes money making videos, not selling hardware.
My PC is 8 years old (i7-4930k). The only thing I've done is upgrade the RAM to 32GB, Installed an SSD and a 1080ti. It runs all games at max or high detail settings. People get sucked in by marketing hype and benchmark results. The reality is, most old PC's if paired with enough RAM and a GPU will still feel fast.

@@JGComments the gtx 1070 still kicks butt!
Well done. My theory is dont upgrade until my computer is not performing as I want or I can do something appreciably better with the upgrade than I can now. I wasnt happy with my computer a couple years ago. I had a I5 with a gtx 970. It wasnt fast enough but played games fine, I upgraded everything but the GPU and I was happy as hell with my computer. I saw no reason for the 1000s cards as it stlll wouldnt let me play at 4k like I wanted, even the 2000 cards wouldnt unless I was going 2080 TI and if I have a 970, I think its fair to judge what I think of that kind of money for a GPU. Now I figure I can get 4 or 5 years out the 3080 and thats an acceptable value to me, so if its ever for sale I'll buy one. Still not willing to buy AMD, dont trust the drivers, but my patience could get the best of me if AMD is actually available.

Hey, don't knock the GT 710, bro. My 70 year old dad has one so he can watch RUclips at 1080p on his 15 year old pre-built with onboard that got tearing at anything above 480p. (I am kidding, but also serious, it's a great bargain for old people computers, £40 for a crap graphics card that does what he needs it to sure beats buying a new computer)
Jay you and your team are great. Always letting us know when we need to pump the breaks and stop impulse buying. I signed up for the evga list for an rtx3080 ftw back when the cards came out and finally got the email to grab mine. I went through the check out and looked at the price (about 1000 usd) and thought to myself, my 2070 super does so well there is no way I can justify $1000 for a new card.
The only response to this in opposition would be that at the time if you did find one for $1k you could've probably turned around and sold your 2070 for 800-1200 just because other people were that desperate...maybe could've even made a few bucks.
I am just now starting to build my first of. I bought a EVGA 3070Ti ultra. Idk if I went overkill or not but I just wanted something nice

That doesn´t make sense. Brand loyalty is just customers being loyal to a brand if it ensures reliability in service and products. Bad management hurts customers and brand loyalty. In other words brand loyalty is a passive phenomenon. Brand loyalty "gets" not "does"

If my new rig ever can't run what I need it to run I can upgrade it but I'm happy with what I have

I realise this video is at least a couple of years old, but the message remains. The model numbers and specs change, but the story and advice are constant.
It reminds me of the Horsepower Wars of the 60s and 70s. Cars have always triggered competitiveness in their owners, but those decades, I think, peaked out the rivalries, with FORU divisions at GM (two of which have disappeared since) fought Ford, Chrysler, and American Motors and one another for bragging rights at drag strips - and public thouroughfares - all oveer North America.
To a degree, designing extra performance in products benefits customers as well as the sales of the manufacturers, but, as you pointed out, advances are sometimes miniscule and even negatively effective.
I personally am trying the ols hotrodder's trick, combining old parts from several sources, to try to squeeze more performance out of a beater.
When I feel like upgrading? Personally I’ve kept a policy with myself that if a cpu can surpass my GPU in graphical computing it’s the time to upgrade to the next __50 GPU!

For anyone reading this one year post-upload, I was considering upgrading my AMD system from a 1800x to a 5xxx series cpu and from an R9 390 to a 6xxx range gpu. Looking at what I needed to do to have this new cpu supported on my old motherboard, I found out getting my motherboard up to speed on compatibility by updating BIOS already improved my performance drastically, even visually, to an extent that I'm now considering not upgrading my cpu at all for now and am now seeing if I can do the same magic as to not needing a new gpu either. I may get a new case first, as I've noticed my old build struggles more over high temperatures than anything.
The reason your pc might be slow is likely not the hardware by itself.
Hey man, so thought I’d ask as I’m watching this vid due to a problem that sounds a lot similar to what you were experiencing, but I have a question, so this time last week, my pc was completely fine, I’d 4 years old but still runs smooth, I have an intel i5 7600k, 16gb ram and a gtx 1070 8gb, it was great, but I downloaded a windows update 2 days ago and now it’s ruined, cpu constantly runs at 100% or close to that, I checked task manager and it’s showing that apparently I only have 1 cpu core, it’s not, it’s a 4 core. I’ve read about it and apparently sometimes when you do an update you MoBo can bug out or it can cause you’re pc to think it only has 1 core, so to fix it you should try updating bios, but I’ve tried to look up how to do that and can’t figure it out, would you be able to help me out please?
Sorry about the long message, just for extra info as well, I chose the parts myself and built it myself too, I was only 16 at the time so looking back I’m not sure if I picked the best parts for my budget but I did do a lot of research at the time, and it worked really well until last week, it just bugs out and won’t even open my games anymore 😭 I don’t know how to fix my baby

I went from an i5 6400, 1050 2GB, 8GB DDR3 setup in an Acer case to a 5600X, 3070 OC, 32GB DDR4 art piece. My original PC was more than great at playing the games I grew up with, but with the new console generation not being appealing at all, and my newfound interest in VR due to Half-Life Alyx, I have to admit that there was a part of me that felt like I would have been settling for "weak" hardware if I had gotten a 3600X, 16GB, and some GPU barely predating RTX when I nearly gave up on getting the new stuff due to shortages. I blame wanting the absolute perfect experience with Half-Life Alyx after waiting over a decade for a new entry; it drove me insane trying to find those parts to the point where when I finally obtained the GPU after initially wanting a 3060 Ti instead, I felt as if a 3070 wasn't even going to be able to handle it properly despite it being more powerful than one of the best cards at the time of the game's release. It took more rewiring than expected to get me to calm down from that mindset.
It's fun to get caught up in the hype of the new stuff, but don't let it hold you back from continuing to enjoy the build that gave you happiness in the time that you've had it.
