- For anyone searching for information regarding hacking terminals in Fallout 4, look no further. If you've seen my video (or comparable others) for hacking in Fallout: New Vegas, there's little different, save a couple small details. If you had read the tooltip that pops up when you first start hacking your very first terminal, it spells it out clearly what you need to do.

Rejinald Palmer I'm pretty sure there would be even more complaints, if they maid it completely pointless as achallenge, by teaspoonfeding you with step by step, connect the the dots diagrams and illustrations. That one tooltip literally explains the mechanics it in clear, green text. That there are small extra tidbits, is there for you to discover on your own through gameplay, as with most other world elements.
Step 1. Save before you start
Step 2. Spend 20 minutes clicking random options
I never even though of that lmao
just exit when you have 1 try left and start over with full tries. no need to reload lol
Step 3. open command prompt and type in unlock while clicking on the terminal you want unlock
Step 4. cry because nothing works
In this case I think 'SELL' was a likeness of 1 simply because 'E' was NOT the correct letter to be looking at. In the word 'SENT' the 'S' was correct being the first letter in the word, and the 'T' was correct in that it was the fourth letter in the word. Hence 'SENT' having a likeness of 2. So 'SHOT' having the 'S' at the start and 'T' at the end, make it correct. That being said, 'SELL' was a viable option since 'E' COULD have been one of the correct letters. Thanks for the tutorial though! Those duds and replenishes will definitely come in handy!

Thank you for this. I'm new to the fallout series (just got fallout 4) I have about 24 hours logged in right now and with terminals, I sort of understood after just playing a lot but what I didn't know is that the likeness letters would be the same AS WELL AS in the same position as the target word. Knowing that makes all the difference and I may be able to actually figure these out now without getting lucky or ultimately guessing.

This guide actually helped me with terminals, I'm a noob at fallout so I didn't know about the hidden text for did removals and try resets.

it's easy... click 1st 3 words then exit the terminal. keep on doing it and you will find it easily ;D

I redownloaded New Vegas and needed a refresher on terminals. This cleared it all up for me. I played Fallout as a kid/teen. I'm 24 now and still love it

Ohhhhh... I thought that the likeliness (#) was just the amount of letters in the actual password. Hacking is less frustrating now lol.
I played Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and about 100 hours of Fallout 4 and never understood how hacking worked until this video. I feel like an idiot.

I have played a lot of Fallout 3 & NV. Just started Fallout 4 over the last few days. I never really understood terminals till now, thanks,man! I was just bumbling thru it. haha
After all this time I had no idea the likeness included the position of the letters. Thought likeness meant that they shared a letter. Never even knew the duds exisited. Explains a lot. SMDH. Ty.

I'm playing fallout 4 for the first time, and i sort of figured out how hacking worked, however, i had no idea that the characters had to be in the same places across words, so that helped, i also didn't know about the glitchy words that help you, so thanks.

Its good to remember to check back on tried words, further than just the single most recent one. Compare them to each other, observe where there is a likeness count but letters DO NOT line up between all the words. This way, by combining these, you may discover more likeness' letters, and sometimes even the whole word.

I had the word ALIKE with a likeness of 3 and there was like NO other word matching it, not even when you just look at the letters and not the spot they are in. I'm playing this game on the oculus rift but that shouldn't make a difference...

On ps4 in hacking i spam the click button while quickly sweeping the whole thing and it skips every word but the correct one

I NO clue about the letter placement or removing duds and pretty much just brute forced most of the tougher terminals in 3/NewVegas!

I've been getting lucky so far getting them in lees than 3 tries but luck doesnt last forever, Glad I found this easy to understand guide
This doesn't work for me all the time. I get things like, "BIDS-likeness 1,BEAT-likeness 1,BACK-likeness 0", and there are no other words with a B or matching letter positions. I think the game screws up. He even was confused at the end of the video, but just moved on anyway with another guess. The tries reset and dud removes will be anything in ( ), { }, [ ], types of brackets also.

yeah, i always wondered how to hack terminals in fallout, lockpicking has always been my main skill (in elder scrolls skyrim, i restarted my character and the first chest i found was a master lock, picked it first try (lvl 1 lockpicking). But this video really simplifies how to hack terminals. Thank you!
You cant hack a master lock at level 1
Amateur_Player i can, and have. If you put it on legendary difficulty you will are most likely to find one. I made it to lvl 30 on legendary, man that was tough.

Ok....Wow! Lol! Had no idea you were supposed to match the spots, I thought it was just the same letters matching in general....And the brackets, never knew! I wondered why it was five minutes lol! Good on you boss, thanks!
So the (likeness=x) is just telling you what letters it could be, and the letters are going to be in the same spot right? For example: the second letter in "sent" was "E" (and i just figured that out it was "E" in that word) so I would pick other words with the second letter "E" till I get another clue?
If 'E' was the same in the target word as the chosen word, then yes. Likeness doesn't tell you *which* letters are the same, just how many are the same. So if you chose 'SENT' and there was a choice between 'BAND' ('n' in the same spot) and 'NEWS' ('e' in the same spot), then both could be potential choices, and both would be a Likeness = 1.
