Recorded an album using a Krankenstein. Found even more joy in my life when I bought a Rev One (which is very similar). Krank still exists but they are missing the kind of company talent that they need to get back to the days when their amps were the choice of Dimebag and Dethklok.
It’s funny you mentioned Dethklok. I’m a HUGE Brendon Small fan and just throw money at his licensed gear (his guitars on my wall are some of my favorites!). The first season of Metalocalypse has the Krank gear pretty prominently featured on screen but as far as I understand it, that was more of a tribute to Dime more than anything and he still used Marshalls for recording but I may be completely wrong lol 🤘🏻
i have a chadwick series head that was modded, built, and signed by tony krank himself it is my favorite amp that i own it gets so nasty dude. and the clean is killer too.
Badass job! I've had a Krank Krankenstein for a year now or so and with a little bit of tinkering and playing with it I've found many tones that I love with it. Before the Krank, I had a Randall Century 170 II...I still use the hell outta that too. Both amps I appreciate the luxury of finding. Now...in just on the hunt for a Washburn 333 and a Furman PQ-3 or PQ-4. Been on it for years...and will continue the hunt.
There's a pair of switches inside chassis which allow you to turn to Revolution mode (without any semiconductors after preamp section). Nice feature, killer sounding, worth to try.

Man, that intro riff, the same you played in your first Natas demo filmed in the studio, is just awesome. I think it’s the best song you’ve ever written. Voilà. Kisses from France bro
Excellent demo! These original Krankensteins were far from perfect and were a little on the fizzy side. But were massive at the same time. Perfect for Dimes(I love Dime, but don’t care for his tone usually). But it’s worth noting that you can more than just Pantera type tones from the Kstein. The master volume and the sweep are probably the two most important things on these amps that you have to be mindful of. With the master volume turned all the way up and using the channel volume for your actual volume control, they sound absolutely fucking monster. And I have found over the years that keeping the sweep set on 3 is pretty much always the sweet spot no matter what type of tone you are going for. Anything below that it gets muddy, anything too far above that it starts sounding like you are running a half cocked wah pedal in front of it. My preferred settings for the Dime channel are: master volume dimed, presence 5-6, bass 6, mids 7 or higher, treble 5-6, gain 5-6(if running an OD pedal, gain at 2-3) and channel volume as loud as I may need it. which is usually never above three because these amps are fucking loud!! On a final note, if you are interested in these amps, the revised Krankenstein Plus(+) is really the one that you want. The 6L6/5881 power section was replaced and upgraded to a 6550/KT88 power section with much larger transformers. And this upgrade pretty much took care of all of my issues I had with the original Kstein; it warmed up the overall tone and rounded off some of the spiky high-end and gave the gain a slightly less saturated slightly less fizzy character while still sounding super fucking aggressive. It also seemed to give the amp a little bit more overall mid range while maintaining the huge low-end. But the big bottle power tubes made the low-end a lot tighter too. I own a Krankenstein Plus head and it is one of the best amps I have ever played through, definitely the best amp I have ever owned. I run mine into a Genz Benz GFlex 412 cab loaded with Eminence Governors and in my opinion it is the perfect tone. It seems these amps tend to pair up best with a front loaded cabinet, preferably an oversized one that can handle it’s massive low end. Another improvement that the big bottle tube power section upgrade made to the gain is how it responds to different guitars and different pickups. Higher output pickups and actives sound fairly modern through it and sound great, but when I plug something with lower output into it, such as my SG, it tends to have more of a British Marshall type sound to it which I’m not mad about!!
@@alfrodmcc1903 Similar to yes. Definitely not particularly spot on to his Pantera tone. May be a little bit more similar to his tone in damage plan. Even though all of the damage plan stuff was recorded with his Randall’s still, you can tell that he was trying to go for something a little bit different with his sound during that era. The Krankenstein will give you an aggressive tone with the potential of some sizzle especially if you run the presence knob pretty high. So you can definitely dial in something similar to his tone. After all he put his stamp of approval on that particular model for being his signature model before he passed away, even though it wasn’t released until after he passed away. But from what I understand the Krank Revolutions that he was using live and was recording the at the new(still unreleased) DP album with were essentially modified to be the Krankenstein circuit as they were were prototypes. Once again the Kstein he’s going to give you a different version of his tone than the Pantera era… It’s going to be chunkier with more punch… But it still got the potential to give you that Dime signature sizzle.
He may have wrote the book with a Randall but that Krankenstein was all Dime and then some. When I was as teaching, they had a full Krankenstein stack on the floor and it still remains one of the most brutal amps I've ever seen. I had a lot of peers who were former Triple rectifier owners because of that amp.
This is the most Dimebag sound so far. Congrats! Makes me wanna buy a Solar guitar 😊 I had a solid wood Krank Rev cabinet with Eminence Legend V12s. It was a real monster.
Krank Krankenstein suffered a terrible badmouthing campaign and was the main target of a public lynching act through harmony central. I was a teenage when it happened and I never understood why such quality amp with clear tight punchy high gain tones was hated so much. Now I can say that this amp stood the test of time. Few amps can deliver quality high gain tones with no pedals or mods, Krankenstein comes to mind. Thanks Ola, you nailed Dime's tone. Cheers from Morocco
My old metalcore band back in the day was endorsed by Krank. We used the rev1 heads pushed with ts9. Perfect metal tone! Krankenstein was always to "fizzy" for us but you got it to sound badass!
Calabrese used the Krankenstein on their second album "The Traveling Vampire Show". They got a great punk/metal sound with it. The best tone they ever got.
@@bigharrykochenbauls4567 I actually like the guitar sound on that album. I made a Kemper profile that replicates it. They Call us Death had a good tone too.
I just wish Tony Krank hadn't made it so shrill, fizzy and dry. Owned this and the Rev for a long time. I wanted to like them but ended up selling. I wish Dime and Mike Fortin could have been in touch back then...just imagine the amps that would have been created.
@@terminalvelocity4858 I had a few Krankensteins. Didn't care too much for the original one. Ended up selling it to someone in Norway. I had a honeymoon phase with the plus model, but that went away a month or two later. Interestingly enough, when I took my first krankenstein + to my tech, he said someone wrote something on the chassis. It read "the spirit of dime lives on!". I always thought that was pretty neat.
I've owned my Krankenstein for 13 years now and played it at every show and most rehearsals since then. Two guitarists I played with bought Krankensteins after trying mine for a practice. I've usually had a spare (though I've never had one fail on me), so altogether I've had experience with 5 or 6 of these original Krankensteins. They all sounded fantastic and worked flawlessly.
8:54 fun fact, you can infact change the channel without the foot switch. I know because I have one. If you reached a little bit more back behind the amp there's a button to go from clean to dime channel. The more you know
Several years back I purchased a Krankenstein head and returned it three days later. It sounded terrible with almost no gain. I was so disappointed. I tried to contact customer support to find out if something was wrong but they were non-existent. I never touched another Krank product again. 7 days after I had already returned it they finally contacted me...what a joke company.
Thanks for Amp test I was waiting a while for this one. Saw two of these amps come up for sale whilst waiting. The dime gear is rare but if you truly are a fan then your patience can be rewarded.
Sounds good in the room and off the mic... I had a band in San Antonio, Texas borrow my Krank (REV1) to record they loved it. He wanted to buy it from me.
I think the tones you get in some of these vids would make Dime himself make a dirty face from the NASTY amount of pure chunk you get...dude would probly be suprised to hear the sound of that thing especially in drop C
Dale Hards There’s a Krankenstein + head and cabinet, great condition, been sitting for sale in music store here in KY for 2yrs. I offered $1100 2yrs ago but he wouldn’t budge off $1200. I checked recently, still sitting in there and now asking $1500. Damn thing sounds amazing really. But I committed to a Lee Jackson XLS1000 half stack for $500/steal instead.
I have the krank cab, red with chrome grill! Looks loud and fast just sitting there doing nothing. With that being said, the speakers inside are quad eminence legend v12 with 480watts of headroom! Best speakers eminence ever made imho. Sounds so killer with a peavey ultra plus. Asked to turn it down all the time at gigs lol!
Hi, Ola. That Krank is really bright because Dime's Krank cabs had Eminence Texas Heats in them. And those speakers have gobs of mids and a muffled top end. Or at least the Texas Heats I own sound that way. And great vid as usual!
That Solar E series hanging on the wall is making my mouth water. If I were a guitar player for real instead of a bass player messing around with the guitar that is THE guitar I would buy. PERIOD.
Ola does the same thing I do when I make my guitar sound cool: I look around with a surpised look to see if anyone else also loves the sound I just made.
Honestly I can't say I exactly liked the tone of that amp, but I can't really say it was bad either. I liked the rawness of it, but there is something a bit weird about it too.
I've got 3 life dreams. Own a Solar, Own a Dime signature, play like Ola. I played from 7 to 18 then quit. I'm 29 now and built an Ibanez from spare guitars and I've been watching and playing nonstop for a month. When I get good again for my 2nd time in life...I will make make a channel and play with ola in a live stream. One day!!!!! Watch it go!!!
@olaenglund to answer your question as to whether or not Dime played the final product, technically no. But what he did play were the revolutions hot rodded out with everything done to them but ended up being in the Krankenstein package. If you've ever watched the crank videos where Dime is in Tony Krank's lab then you've heard the second to last version of the amp. Dime received a couple of the finished products and Revolution head form a few weeks before he died. The only difference was really the casing and the cosmetics.
I was feeling nostalgic and hooked my krankenstein up a couple of months ago and it sounded brutal, I can’t stop playing it, I calmed the high end sizzle by using a laney 2x12and when I played this head live I would use a Randall 4x12 it seemed to tame the high end, I think Dime may have used the krank one or two songs on the damaged plan album

My preferred settings for the Dime channel are:
master volume dimed, presence 5-6, bass 6, mids 7 or higher, treble 5-6, gain 5-6(if running an OD pedal, gain at 2-3) and channel volume as loud as I may need it. which is usually never above three because these amps are fucking loud!!
If I were to buy the other Krank amp you mentioned would it be as easy to create a tone similar to dimes?
How defined and crisp that amp sounds despite such a low turning, and so much gain is impressive.
Dime will forever be remembered by me as a Randall player... that's HIS sound.
Same lol
He may have wrote the book with a Randall but that Krankenstein was all Dime and then some. When I was as teaching, they had a full Krankenstein stack on the floor and it still remains one of the most brutal amps I've ever seen. I had a lot of peers who were former Triple rectifier owners because of that amp.
exactly
same with his other effects that had his name on it, it was just imitation, they even produced imitation pickups
@@geekguitars Fair enough but Damageplan didn’t sound like the Dime I fell in love with...
I’ve never been into the Dimebag tone, but I love the tone of that amp..which means I like the Dimebag tone I guess.
the Krank stuff is the most versatile "Dime Gear" there is in my opinion
Not really..he never used them on any Pantera stuff...I don't care for his tone either
Sounds like Chong Chong not chug chug way too spikey
It is 2:30 in the morning here in Texas... but Ola put up a new video so I guess I have to watch it now, thanks lol

Explains alot about the sound on that album
@@bigharrykochenbauls4567 I actually like the guitar sound on that album. I made a Kemper profile that replicates it. They Call us Death had a good tone too.
@@brpadington reminds me of the "Hall" eq setting on HiFi. Biggens the sound
@@brpadington I also listened to the whole album again after you posted your comment 👌
@@bigharrykochenbauls4567 Hell yeah. Calabrese rules.
If i'm being completely honest. I think this is one of the meanest sounding amps i've ever heard.
Agreed, holy fuck the Solar through it is destruction. Can't imagine what it sounds like in person
I very much enjoy the tone as well, a very nice clean n crunchy tone...also kinda like Fear Factory
The snarl is unreal. Reminds me of a couple peaveys i lve heard.
Extremely underrated amplifier with such a unique mids!
I just wish Tony Krank hadn't made it so shrill, fizzy and dry. Owned this and the Rev for a long time. I wanted to like them but ended up selling. I wish Dime and Mike Fortin could have been in touch back then...just imagine the amps that would have been created.
What is the name of that dba meter
@@c22880 Dateq SPL-D2 MKII
@@terminalvelocity4858 I had a few Krankensteins. Didn't care too much for the original one. Ended up selling it to someone in Norway. I had a honeymoon phase with the plus model, but that went away a month or two later. Interestingly enough, when I took my first krankenstein + to my tech, he said someone wrote something on the chassis. It read "the spirit of dime lives on!". I always thought that was pretty neat.
I admire your Dedication, and I hope you feel better soon! Greetings from Edmonton AB. Canada
Derrin Ruschell are they hard to come by nowadays? I’ve been thinking of getting one
Those KranK Amps were absolutely amazing.
i was literally just looking at these amps today and you post it.
8:54 fun fact, you can infact change the channel without the foot switch. I know because I have one.
If you reached a little bit more back behind the amp there's a button to go from clean to dime channel.
The more you know
Sorry to hear about your headache Ola. Get better plez
I had one for about 16 years now. Occipital Nueralgia sucks. Had my neck fused c3-c7 front and back.
Dude the amplitube one was the best by far, almost PERFECT.
0:08 Remind me The Dagger of Roadrunner United ✌🏻😆🤘🏻
I watch almost every day. Every time I see your guitar I want one. Dam it!
8:36 OMG NO OLA IS HAVING A SEIZURE SOMEONE CALL A DOCTOR
those duncan solars with that amp are insane levels of metal tone right there.just shows how versatile that amp is
Several years back I purchased a Krankenstein head and returned it three days later. It sounded terrible with almost no gain. I was so disappointed. I tried to contact customer support to find out if something was wrong but they were non-existent. I never touched another Krank product again. 7 days after I had already returned it they finally contacted me...what a joke company.
So that's why they went under.
Thanks for Amp test I was waiting a while for this one. Saw two of these amps come up for sale whilst waiting. The dime gear is rare but if you truly are a fan then your patience can be rewarded.
3:52 the ratio of nob adjustment to increase volume seems good...
Thanks for showing me how to finally play the main riff in by demons be driven.20 years in the making
Krank means sick in German.
Seems legit
I've really enjoyed the Dime gear videos this past year. thank you Ola the Swede!
What is being played at 7:20 ? I like that ! sick sounded like Hells Bells AC/DC
Sounds good in the room and off the mic... I had a band in San Antonio, Texas borrow my Krank (REV1) to record they loved it. He wanted to buy it from me.
I saw that in "The Art of Shredding" live video from the 90's, Dime was using a wall of JCM 900's.
That was backline for the headliner.
With MTP440 it sounds exactly like Dimebag. Ola you swede, you are the best!
That tone you got from it with your Solar guitar was killer. Also that amp had a lot of feedback and noise.
to be expected at 104 db tbh...
I mean, yeah, it’s boosted. Wait til you hear the Nazgul scream of a boosted 5150...just make sure you brought your noise gate!
@@BrandonBames I have an EVH 5150-3 amp head and Nazguls in 2 of my guitars, and yep they scream with my boost pedals.
Got a new respect for you Ola. Keeping dime alive. Good shit brother!
Ah yes, can never get enough Dime/Pantera related shit to test! Thank you Mr. Swedish Viking man.
You been chasin for dime's tone!!! But i think you nail it!!! Getcha pull bro..
I think the tones you get in some of these vids would make Dime himself make a dirty face from the NASTY amount of pure chunk you get...dude would probly be suprised to hear the sound of that thing especially in drop C
It look so much fun to play with!! Amazing sound!!!
That is an incredible sounding amp!
Straight out Damageplan tone is what I hear. That's just so good sounding!
Getcha pull!!
Smile with the black tooth grin!!
Its ya boy
I have the krank cab, red with chrome grill! Looks loud and fast just sitting there doing nothing. With that being said, the speakers inside are quad eminence legend v12 with 480watts of headroom! Best speakers eminence ever made imho. Sounds so killer with a peavey ultra plus. Asked to turn it down all the time at gigs lol!
That face you made when you started playing Hostile!! Hahaha priceless!!
Hi, Ola. That Krank is really bright because Dime's Krank cabs had Eminence Texas Heats in them. And those speakers have gobs of mids and a muffled top end. Or at least the Texas Heats I own sound that way. And great vid as usual!
@ 7:00 mark...
Remember Ola: Always keep your nuts locked, or else your G-string will get bent out of place. 😉
That Solar E series hanging on the wall is making my mouth water. If I were a guitar player for real instead of a bass player messing around with the guitar that is THE guitar I would buy. PERIOD.
I would like to see you re-demo the DIME D100 amp !! I own one and it’s killer 🤘🏻
Joshua Ortiz me too push it with a mxr zakk wylde
Man, that tone with the Solar was something!
This amp is the tone of AS I LAY DYING in “An Ocean Between Us”
Ola does the same thing I do when I make my guitar sound cool: I look around with a surpised look to see if anyone else also loves the sound I just made.
Honestly I can't say I exactly liked the tone of that amp, but I can't really say it was bad either. I liked the rawness of it, but there is something a bit weird about it too.
Almost like it was trying to get a solid state sound?
Ola I just want to say I love and appreciate you and your videos :)
Next time try with "negative creep" main riff is heavy AF.
Dime actually never got to play this amp. It was released after his untimely passing. He used the Krank Revolutions.
Sean C modified Rev 1's tho. Basically same design as presented in the krankenstein
I'm getting this amp next month! Can't wait.
Nevermore cover from This Godless Endeavor? I believe that was recorded with a krankenstein *wink wink*
I put this on every once in awhile to listen to you riffing Pantera, so awesome
"I Forgot to Lock the Floyd Rose" would be a great song title
@olaenglund to answer your question as to whether or not Dime played the final product, technically no. But what he did play were the revolutions hot rodded out with everything done to them but ended up being in the Krankenstein package. If you've ever watched the crank videos where Dime is in Tony Krank's lab then you've heard the second to last version of the amp. Dime received a couple of the finished products and Revolution head form a few weeks before he died. The only difference was really the casing and the cosmetics.
12:55 keep the amp it's killer! 😭
I saw Dimbags last show in Texas at the Ridglea theater here in the d/fw metroplex. He did play the Krank & Dean combo for that show.
Sounds more like Exodus’ “Impact Is Imminent” tone...
OLA!!! i found LITERALLY ANY amp can do dime tone with boss EH-2 in the loop!!!
SWEAR TO GOD!!!
What a lot of people forget is that Dime's tone mostly came from his fingers
No it came from alot of different things
No. It came from melting guitar strings.
That's the best amp I've heard you play it sounds killllller!!!
thats what metallica used for death magnetic
No, they used a diezil for that album.
Death magnetic is the worst tone
@@steveshreds353 in terms of metallica tones? I agree. But in the grand scheme of things its not that bad.
Ola, who makes the decibel meter?
It's from Thomann
@@Sticky_Tea are you sure? i was looking for it online, can't find, thanks
I remember seeing shadows fall back in 2005 they were using these sounded awesome.
Next Randall Titan and Vmax
Found a used one in excellent condition with the matching 4x12 for $1680. I jumped on that and glad I did.
