  • We painted the garage floor and added a coat of clear sealant to give it a little extra strength. (Please note: In the video, we refer to the top coat as epoxy. This is incorrect. It is an acrylic sealant)

    This is a short video that actually took a couple weeks to complete due to the time it takes for the various layers of paint to cure. It made such a tremendous difference in how the garage looks but we welcome your comments and suggestions.

      That means a ton to us for others to be inspired by what we have done. Just to be totally honest as I have with all others that have commented. We knew from the start that there would be chipping/flaking very soon after painting the floor. We only have problems where the car tires are parked. We learned this is because tires heat up when driving and the heat causes the chipping. We are okay with this because the rest of the floor still looks so much better. You could spend much more on the available kits that use a stronger epoxy that can handle the heat better but they too eventually chip. We plan to repeat this process in a year or two as a touch up but when we do so, there are different steps we would take. 1 - we learned there is a garage floor primer paint. using this would help the paint to adhere to the floor even better. 2 - instead of only applying 2 coats of epoxy, we would apply as many as we could with the can that we have. we would not buy more epoxy but we had alot left over so we would just keep applying. The more coats, the stronger it is. If you choose to do this method, we would love to hear how things turn out! Good luck and thank you once again for viewing and commenting!

      Doug, couple lessons learned for you. 1 we knew going in that the paint would still chip using this method and it did but only where the tire are parked. This is caused by tires being hot after driving and the heat causes the peeling. 2 - we considered small matts where the tires are but figured it was a minor issue and when cars are parked, you cant see peeling. 3 - there is a garage painting primer. Using the primer might adhere to paint better and prevent peeling. Our method is inexpensive but if I had to do it again, I would use the same method and include a layer of primer first. Would love to hear how things turn out for you. 😁

      @@avvarutheja Thank you so very much for the input. We agree with you and have stated that to people who have asked for additional information. We were not aware of the availability of the concrete primer when we did this to the garage floor but we will certainly use primer the next time. The biggest issue we learned is that the chipping is caused from the heat of the tires after driving. The epoxy that we used is inexpensive and does not create a super strong barrier. We would recommend numerous coats of the epoxy as well as primer.

      As we honestly stated, we knew it was an inexpensive method and that we expected chipping to occur. It did chip within a month or so BUT... only where the car tires are located when we park the cars. We learned this happens because car tires get hot when driving and the heat causes the peeling. The rest of the floor held up very well. Chips here and there from all the woodworking we do in the garage , along with typical spills , etc. We will definitely redo this every so many years. No regrets at all!

Second... definitely use a second coat. third... a second coat of epoxy will certainly be a good idea. • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  5 лет назад +1

      We did a lot of research in advance and I knew going in that this procedure will not fair well and the paint will start peeling and it has. Our back up all along has been to purchase garage floor matsbut we still wanted the rest of the conrete to look fresh anyway. I dont think it will peel if just from foot traffic so a laundry room may be ideal. For the clear epoxy, we used Seal-Crete Clear Gloss Garage Floor Epoxy from Lowes. (Even with the peeling paint we would do this again)

      As we expected, there are small areas that chipped almost immediately. I learned that it is caused from the heat of the tires. I was planning to use garage floor mats but they move around and will get in my way when pulling out wood working equipment so we dont bother the areas that chipped. The rest of the floor looks great and the only time you see the chipped off are is when the cars are not in the garage. For an inexpensive way of upgrading the garage floor, we are still very happy. Thank you for watching and for asking questions.

      @Poor_Mans_DIY  3 года назад +2

      The paint started chipping within weeks but we knew in advance that this was likely to happen. But, it only happens where the car tires rest when parked. We learned this is because car tires get hot when driving and the heat is what damages the paint and causes it to chip. The rest of the garage is holding up very well. We have zero regrets and will definitely do that same thing to refresh/touchup the garage. The only difference is that, we learned there is a primer that you can use. We will definitely use the primer in hopes of the paint adhering to the concrete and paint better and maybe it will prevent chipping a little. Also, we did two coats of epoxy as instructed but we had left over. Next time, we will apply as many coats of epoxy as possible for extra strength. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and we will do our best to provide a resolution for you. If you do the project, we would love to hear how things work out for you. Good luck!

    Helpful video. Question... After adding the coat of clear epoxy sealant... would that make the floor slippery when wet? That's my one reservation because I have kids and if water spills on the garage floor I wouldn't want them to slip especially if you really can't see a spill on the sealed floor. Thanks.

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  3 года назад +1

      A couple bits of info for you. 1 - we made a mistake by referring to the coating as epoxy. It is a sealant and it has not been slippery when wet. 2 - there is an additive that can be stirred in with epoxy or the sealant that dries gritty and makes the floor slip resistant. I hope this helps.

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  2 года назад

      Wow! This is a very fascinating question. If I were to play devil's advocate and look at it from both sides, I would, on one hand say, This idea is very clever and it actually wood save on costs. Now looking at it from the other side, I would be concerned that the color where primer was used, may be slightly different from the paint color where no primer was used. One might consider using a different type of primer that is not specifically for concrete and it may not adhere to the concrete or paint. I also do not recall seeing concrete primer being sold in small quantities so if you purchase a full gallon and only use it in small areas, you will end up with a lot of left over that may not be used for years and go to waste anyway. I am leaning towards using the primer but I still think you raised a wonderful question.

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  2 года назад +1

      The paint started peeling and chipping within a couple months, but based on our research, we expected it. The good thing is that the chipping only occurred where the car tires sit when parked. This is because tires get very warm when driving, so the heat causes the paint to chip. The rest of the floor has done very well. The cost savings was worth the flaw. We considered ordering mats to place under the tires but figured its not a big deal. 😀

      It started chipping almost immediately but only under the tires. We knew this would happen based on what we read in advance. We learned that this is caused because of the heat of the tires. (tires get warm from driving). Other than the chips under the tires, we still love the paint job and will do it again. Next time we will also use primer that we were not aware was available and we plan to apply as many coats of the clear coat as we can with 0ne gallon. We have admitted that going into this project that is would peel quickly and it did. It started peeling within a month or two as expected. Our research showed that car tires get hot from friction while driving, regard if it is hot or cold outside. The heat from the tires cause damage to the paint and cause it to peel. The peeling is primarily where the car tires are. The rest of the garage floor has held up very well. we do have chips all over but they are all caused from woodworking projects. We have no regrets and when it comes time to repaint again, we will certainly use the method again. Maybe use mats under the tires. If you have any further questions, please let me know.

      Ms Cheryl, I absolutely believe it would keep. the small areas that are peeling are directly under the tires. I learned this is because car tires get hot from friction while driving and the heat damages the epoxy and paint. Although we were not aware of it at the time, there is a primer that can be used on the garage floor. I will definitely be using the primer and use up every bit of epoxy for additional coats, just for the added strength.

      The paint started chipping within a month but we expected it. We learned the cause is from the tires as they get got from driving. only where the tires are parked was the paint flaking.The floor has other damage but that is my fault for using the garage as a workshop. spilled paint, epoxy and dropping heavy items on occasion has caused some damage but all in all, we love the floor and have no regrets. How has it been holding up?

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  7 дней назад +1

      The reviews are probably correct but there may be more to it. Within a short period the paint started chipping on our floor. BUT!!!! it was only chipping below where the tires rest when parking the car. After research, I learned it is because the tires get warm from friction when driving and the heat from the tires make it chip. One solution would be to place mats where the tires rest and it may help. Of course, when the car is parked, you dont see the chips much because the tires cover it. :-). As for the rest of the floor, mine is destroyed, but I abuse my floor differently from most others. I use my garage as a woodworking shop every day. I roll out workbenches and heavy woodworking equipment, as well as lumber, etc. I spill paint, wood stain and epoxy and it damages the floor even more. However... around the edges of the floor where there is little traffic from car tires and woodworking, the floor looks great. Based on cost comparison to the much more expensive epoxies. I stand by my decision to paint the garage floor as I did. I can redo the garage every few years and the cost will still be less than the expensive epoxy that is supposed to last 10 years. If money is a concern, I stand by this but if you can afford to spend more, you may want to consider the epoxy method. I hope this helps.

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  Год назад +1

      From the beginning, we knew it would chip quickly and it did within a few short months. But the chipping was exclusively where the parked car tires were located. We learned this is because tires get hot from friction when driving and the heat causes the chipping. The rest of the garage was virtually unharmed. The garage has since had more chipping and the floor does not look magnificent because I do a ton of small and large woodworking projects using hammers, and lots of power tools that bang and scratch the floor. Not to mention all the paint, stain and epoxy drips and spills. Overall, I stand by my decision to go the inexpensive route and will definitely do this again as a touchup/refinish. It has been a while so I had to look up the info. according the Behr, wait 4-6 hours for additional coat. I searched all over Rustoleum's official page as they now own Seal Krete and I found no specific instructions for wait period between paint and sealer BUT they show that you can etch, apply primer, paint and seal and be done in a single weekend so doing the math, I personally would be comfortable waiting 4-6 hours. NOTE: We learned from our experience with this and when I do this again, which I will, I will also apply primer first. I always apply primer when painting anything but I was not aware there was a concrete primer, which I found in the big box store AFTER we completed the project. Even rustoleum shows to apply primer as well. It will help the paint to bond much better to the concrete. Good luck if you decide to accomplish this. It flaked very quickly as we expected but only under the car tires. We learned this is because car tires heat up while driving and the heat from the tire on the less expensive epoxy caused it to flake. The rest of the garage floor still looks wonderful. There are stains every day use of the garage. We are definitely happy with what we did. We plan to repeat this every few years or more but when we do it next, we learned there is garage floor primer paint available. We will use this to help the paint bond better and we only applied two coats of epoxy and had a lot left over. Next time, we will keep adding coats until the can is empty. @Poor_Mans_DIY  4 года назад +2

      Mr Patrick, Thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for your question. For a small two car garage, one gallon of paint allowed two coats of paint. Please understand that this method is not the best and we are open about this to all viewers and their questions. It is however the most economical. The more expensive garage painting kits were five times more expensive and it lasts 10 years. We believe we can repaint the garage every 3 years and the cost will still be a better deal. Also, the expensive kit is not perfect and I have read it peels too. The only true way to prevent peeling is hiring a contractor. They use a heavy duty epoxy. We expected the paint to peel quickly and it did but ONLY where the tires are parked. Tires get hot when driving and the heat from the tires is what causes the damage. The rest of the garage still looks great (except for all the paint and woodworking damage I cause.) I will definitely use the same method with a couple differences. 1 - there is a garage paint primer on the market, so i will use that. 2 - more than the paint, I think the epoxy has a better chance of surviving longer so I will put on 1 or 2 extra coats of epoxy. Sorry for the long response but I hope it helps. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask and I will do my best to answer.

I am not trying to hide anything. If you read other comments, I openly admit the pain chipped very quickly, but we expected it from the beginning. The chipping has only occurred where our car tires are parked. We learned this happens because tires get hot when driving and the heat of the tires damage the paint. The more expensive epoxys can handle to heat so they dont peel as quickly. We definitely do not regret using the inexpensive method and will do it again. It is something that is done here in the UK on industrial paint jobs, so that the paint looks self coloured but on very close examination, it has some tiny colours inside it. mostly done on walls where there is a need to have a hard wearing surface - such as a hospital corridor or school corridor. First, there is in fact a garage paint primer, when we touch up or redo the garage again, we will most certainly use primer as its purpose is to bind surfaces to the paint. Next, we learned chipping occurs under the tires because tires get hot while driving and the heat from the tires causes the chipping when using this inexpensive option. If I were in your position, I would definitely remove the paint and use acid clean. if you dont, the paint does not stick to the concrete, it will stick to particles that were not removed with the acid wash. I do hope this helps.

    *Hows it holding up 5 years later ???*

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY

      It actually started chipping within a few months, but only in a few specific locations. Doing some research, I realized it was chipping where car tires sit when parked. Turns out, tires get hot from friction when driving and caused the chipping, but the rest of the floor was great. My garage floor is torn up all over because I use it as a woodworking shop. I am constantly dragging around equipment, dropping heavy things, etc. That being said. I stand by my decision to paint it as I did. Note: the edges of my garage, where I do not walk or work on, still look good!

      Thank you for the kind words and for your great question. We knew, goinng in from the start. The paint would chip quickly , and it did so within a few months, but the chipping was where the car tires sut when parked. This is caused because tires get hot when driving and the heat causes the chipping. The rest of the garage held up well except for the fact that i do a ton of wood working in the garage. I have spills and chip caused from hammering, dropping, moving etc. That being said, I am happy with the garage and will do it again as a refresh or touch up

      @@Poor_Mans_DIY Thank you for your reply. It helps a lot. Do you think the addition of the concrete floor sealer helped as much as you had hoped?

      @@Growla Long after posting the video, I realized I used the wrong terminology and referred to the coating as epoxy and it is not. That being said, I think the sealer is needed and provides a strength to the paint. An additional point. After making the video we learned that there is a concrete garage primer paint. I know the value of primer and use it for painting all the time. I will definitely use it when I recoat some day!

    Poor Man’s DIY??? I would love to know how much you spent, and you should have compared your cost to a contractor or the other products out there.

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  4 года назад

      Mr Webster, I definitely understand your point. I have had a couple projects done by contractors over the years. The prices are astronomical so we just do things we can for ourselves. As such, I dont think it would be fair to ask contractors to provide me with a quote when I have no intention of using their service. In addition, we live in Hawaii and costs for contractors is unreal. You watch TV programs about house flipping and how they redo an entire house for a small amount is an amount we get charged just to make a walk in shower. My costs would not help anyone unless they live in Hawaii. We did cost comparisons between the materials we used against the high end garage painting kits and found what we did was around five times less expensive and decided it may not be the best method but it is a sound method for those who cannot afford other options. I am sincerely sorry I am unable to provide the specific information you requested. Please be safe and stay healthy.

    Why don't you show a follow-up to what it looks like today?

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  2 года назад +2

      I do not have plans to do a follow-up but I will be 100% open in admitting that the floor started chipping/flaking within a couple months, but it occurred only where the car tires are located. I learned this is caused because tires get hot while driving and the heat caused the flaking of the paint. The rest of the garage looks fantastic and I when I do a touch up, I will use the same process. Other than where the tires are, I have chips in numerous places but they are all where I move my wood working mobile workbenches. I do a ton of building in the garage and the things I do are often not gentle on the garage floor. For the everyday homeowner, I think this method is an inexpensive (but not perfect solution). I hope this helps but if you have any further questions, I will do my best to provide a proper resolution/response.

    • @Poor_Mans_DIY
      @Poor_Mans_DIY  3 года назад

      I apologize for not clarifying. there is concrete at the base of each wall that is about 6inches high. so there is 6 inches of concrete that is vertical and we painted it. the paint seems to have adhered well. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to provide a proper resolution
