    For a garage floor Epoxy would be better but there are some good high wear water based paints on the market. The main difference with Epoxy paint is that it is chemical resistant, it will handle chemical spills and that's why a lot of commercial businesses prefer it used on floors rather then water based paint.

    Great video Thanks! I am doing this exact job in the next week or two and I just had a question regarding the acid wash step, the surface I am doing already has a worn down layer of paint on it so would I skip this step and sand lightly instead? The current colour is the pretty much the same as the new colour will be, just giving the front of house a facelift.

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  3 года назад

      The acid helps clean the surface so its up to you, if you think it doesn't need it then skip that step but make sure the surface is clean.

    I do prefer oil based or a two part epoxy for garage floors but I know of a busy shop floor that was painted using water based paint and it looks like its handling the wear & tear well. As long as the surface is prepared correctly water based paving paints seem to last but they won't stand up to chemical spills like epoxy or oil based paints will.

    I thought pterodactyls were extinct! Haha! Just kidding bud. I'm glad you made this video - I've been struggling for an idea on how to finish my floor in my studio. You pretty much gave me what I'm looking for, thanks!
    I was looking in to a resin method, but it just seems a bit much, and wayyy too time consuming. I've spent enough time working on my studio, I'd like to have the rest of it done this year.
    When I've got it all done, I might put it up on youtube. I've done some rather interesting concepts in it so far, and I have the perfect flooring idea to go with the walls ;)
    Cheers!

    Thanks for the tutorial, it helped a lot. I stenciled Latex Porch and Floor paint onto my front concrete porch and walkway. I would like to seal it to protect the color, do you recommend any types of sealers? I was told to use Valspar Wetlook Protective Sealer by the Home Improvement store but was then told by Valspar that I should not have put that ontop of latex paint....not sure why because it worked fine and looks great. Now I want to seal the painted walkway but not sure what sealer to use.....any suggestions? Thank You.

    Excellent video by someone who knows his stuff!
    I am laying a slab for a new garage floor in a warm part of Australia. How long should I leave the new concrete to harden before painting... a month, 6 months, a year? I am not sure. And should I go for oil based or epoxy for greater "industrial" strength? The floor will need to survive cars, rolling chair wheels, spanners etc.
    Thanks for the video, too.

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  9 лет назад

      RevolutionaryRocket I would leave it for about 4 weeks just to make sure it is dry and if you are using the garage as a workshop then a two part epoxy would be best.

    Use an oil based paving/flooring paint, most are quick dry and you can walk on them 2 -4 hrs later. Just make sure you use a non slip additive if needed.

  • @howtopaintinfo
    @howtopaintinfo  11 лет назад +1

    Wet area floors are fine to paint just make sure you use a non slip additive or buy a non slip paint. Most flooring paints I have used including two part polyurethanes don't need a primer but do check with manufactures standards as all brands do vary. Most brands I use just say to thin first coat so it soaks in better.

    Question. What about the expansion joints? I am thinking of redoing my expansion joints. Should I caulk them before painting or after. Also, I have a few hairline cracks. I can fill them prior but will the paint cover them. Your work is incredible. Can you please tell me what color you are using as well. It looks nature and clean. Thank you for your help.

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  7 лет назад

      Expansion joints can be done either way, if you want to hide them you will need to fill them before you paint. With hair line cracks some times I will apply a first coat and see how many fill with paint then fill and touch up any remaining cracks. I think the colour was Paper Bark, a colour bond colour.

  • @howtopaintinfo
    @howtopaintinfo  11 лет назад +1

    Well most top coats will flatten off slightly when applied over a primer so you need two coats to get an even finish. Primer maybe cheaper but if you count the time it takes to open the can of primer, pour out the paint, wipe the paint away then wash out roller and brush then I would say it would be cheaper to use two coats of top coat.

  • @kungfufona
    @kungfufona 11 лет назад

    Great video. I have a laundry that is proving a real pain for tiling. Do you think painting the concrete floor is a good idea? People say its not good to do this in the wash area? And I was also told I should use prima after I clean the concrete? (Before painting it) If I do go this way. Cheers :)

    Hi Great video.Now which point do you recommend for single car garage and do I need to buy two-pack epoxy? Also does it need polyurethane clear coating since there is going to be some so un hitting the first meter from the garage door? Thanks in advance if you can send a this advice as soon as you can!

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  5 лет назад +1

      Sorry advice wasn't sooner, Two pack epoxy would be the best way to go but if the floor doesn't get much use then a good paving paint would be ok. Don't paint a clear over it, the sunlight will make the clear yellow over time.

    • @howtopaintinfo

      I could see both of them doing a great job and I know grinding would be an excellent way to get the surface clean but I would say both would be a tad more expensive then using acid.

    Most flooring or paving paints I have used are self priming so there is no need for a primer or sealer. As for patterns, you could make or buy a stencil. When it comes to filling holes you can use an exterior filler for small holes or use a two part filler for larger ones.

    Thank you great video. How long would you expect the paint to look fresh for, so before before it starts to chip etc. does it depend on how well you prep and quality of paint?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  3 года назад +1

      It will depend on wear and tear, the more the area is used the quicker it will break down and start looking crappy. So a floor that's not used a lot could look good for say 5 years, heavy use may only last less then 12 months. Good prep will help you get the most out of the paint and normally better quality paints will last longer.

    • @howtopaintinfo

      As far as I know there is no paint that looks like wood, you can use a technique called "artificial wood gaining" but that would be a bit more difficult to do on a floor.

    Acid etching does help to clean the surface but the idea is for the acid to eat in to the concrete slightly and remove any loose material giving the paint a better surface to stick too. So for a painted surfaces you don't need to acid etch but make sure you clean and sand the surface before re painting.

    I plan to paint my interior floors. Would I need to seal them for a longer lasting finish? What type of product should I use?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  9 лет назад

      Shanae4rmMS Most modern paints are self priming so a sealer is not required but do read the instruction on the paint can or if in doubt you can use a sealer, just means you will still need to apply two top coats. If you do seal the floor first then apply two top coats it should last longer.

    Do you have to put some kind of clear seal on top?

      No, but there are clears that you can use for concrete.

    That was a very imformative video! I am in the process of painting my garage floor. I have cleaned with TSP, acid etched, pressured washed and skim and repaired where necessary. The garage is 45 years old but the concrete is now in good paintable condition. I use the garage for storing an older car for periods of time, not constant traffic. Would you recommend latex or oil based paints? Thanks, Tom

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  10 лет назад +1

      For a garage floor I would most likely use a two part epoxy paint. There are some good water based paints on the market but I'm not sure if they would handle chemical spills like an epoxy paint would. If your car is leaking oil then you will need a paint that can handle that or if you intend to bleed brakes etc you will need a paint that is resistant to chemicals.

    • @tomcummings7162

      howtopaintinfo I thought you would say epoxy, but I was hoping you would say a water based would do it. My concern was it's 45 years old and it does have spots and stains. Like I said in my original posting, even though I cleaned, etched and patched, I thought there may be a problem with epoxy bonding. By just skimming, patching and caulking the cracks makes it look a lot better; I actually thought about leaving it that way and maybe sealing it.
      Like you, I am also a tradesman (retired electrician), and know there is a right and a wrong way to do things.
      thanks again
      Tom

      Using a sealer would work but you will still the stains. Regarding using a water based paint, my local hardware has used a water based paint on their floor and it seems to be handling all the foot traffic.

    Do you water blast before you use the acid?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  6 лет назад

      It depends on the surface, sometimes water blasting is not necessary but if the surface is extra dirty then water blasting first would be a good idea.

    Would white vinegar work as an acid cleanser?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  5 лет назад

      I have never tried but I'm sure it's not strong enough to clean concrete. White vinegar is used to etch new zincalume, it's a mild acid.. Try it and let me know how you go.

    Seeing that it's water based emulsion, is it not vulnerable to being washed away or being discoloured when it may be mopped with hot water each day?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  5 лет назад

      mopping with hot water every day should be ok but if its a commercial area then a two part epoxy would be the best paint to use..

    Good information, what would you do about the damaged edge at the bottom of the screen at 7:20 ?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  5 лет назад

      As you seen I did nothing about it, It was on a farm house and not a display home. If I had to fill it I would look for a good two part epoxy filler. It will depend on what sort of traffic it will get and maybe you are better off not filling it.

    Is it compulsory to do epoxy primer before the epoxy finish? Or just 2 coats of epoxy finish is good enough?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  3 года назад

      Read the instructions on the can, every product varies a little so its best to read what the manufacture recommends but there are a lot that just recommend two coat of finish product and again will depend on the surface you are painting.

    I'm considering to paint a concrete floor in my store. Could the floor become stained at all after painting? Also, there is a professional floor washing machine that will be used, could this ruin the paint or remove it? Do you believe that paint would be a good solution or something else to cover the concrete? Great video, thanks!

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  10 лет назад

      For commercial use you could use a two part epoxy paint, they are hard wearing and resistant to a lot of chemicals. My local hardware has used an acrylic or water based paint on their floor and it seems to be handling the wear and tear.

      You can if you want. It should be fine as long as the surface is clean before applying paint.
