    1) Pressure washing blasts particles and excess water into the concrete, which is porous. The proper way to clean concrete before painting it is to wash it down with 1-2 applications of TSP, and then wash it down with a low-pressure garden hose.
    2) After TSP, the concrete would need 24hrs at 20*C or above to dry completely.
    3) If you're only getting 100 square feet on the first coat, you're using too thick of a nap roller. 3/4 is way too thick a roller, which causes the paint to be far more complex than the 2mil it should be on the surface of the concrete. One of the most common mistakes that painters make is using the wrong roller/applicator for a product. A 13-15mm roller would have been more appropriate for this project.
    This is not criticism. I have 20 years experience as a certified paint/coatings expert, and that's residential/commercial/industrial.

    • @Phoenix19Crece
      @Phoenix19Crece 2 года назад

      What is TSP? I have a neighbor who wants this done. We powerwashed 2 weeks ago for Spring Cleanup. Interested in avoiding first timer mistakes.

    • @Phoenix19Crece
      @Phoenix19Crece 2 года назад

      TSP is a liquid product name, Got it! So you are saying just apply it and then rinse it off? Do you scrub? Wire brush?

    • @jayman105
      @jayman105 2 года назад

      @@Phoenix19Crece TSP is a granular. You take three tablespoons and mix with 4 litres of water (in a bucket) and scrub the surface with a nylon (not wire) scrub brush.
      Rinse off with a garden hose or low-pressure hose, and let the surface dry for 24-48 hours depending on outdoor temperatures. Surface must be completely dry before paint is applied.
      Ideally, when the temperatures outside stay around 20*C during the day and no lower than 12*C overnight, the paint can be applied. The surface temperature of the concrete is critical as well. If painted to early in the spring, it won't stick well to the surface let alone cure properly.

    Instead of paint I put stonebond ( tiny pebbles ) over the concrete around my pool. It has a rough surface which makes it cooler and reduces the chance of slipping. Only drawback is the glue has to be reapplied about every 3 or 4 years. The first couple times I glued it myself, but as it began to age I let the pros take over because they could repair any damage. When I painted the floor in my basement, it still looked good after a couple decades so I only repainted it when we wanted to change the color. The garage was another story. I painted it with 3 different kinds of expensive concrete paint or stain and each time it would come up where I parked my hot car tires. I eventually gave up and learned to live with it. I used paint the last time as close to the color of concrete as I could find and it's not that noticeable.

    I do decorative concrete for a living and own a product line as well. The issue with using topical coatings that do not penetrate or block moisture will eventually flake, concrete is like a hard sponge and having excessive moisture being pulled through the concrete can cause it to peel over time. The key is to make sure that the first coat that touches the concrete penetrates before applying anything topical like a film forming paint.

    • @MikeDayConcrete
      @MikeDayConcrete  3 года назад

      I tell people this is topical and not permanent. It will need to be touched up at some point. I make that clear to my customers. It does adhere very well though if the concrete prep is done right.

      We mostly use xylene or paint thinner to remove the tough spots of paint. If you use a turbo tip on the pressure washer, that usually removes all the paint.

      It can yes. Just pressure wash the old, let it dry real good and then paint it.

      No!!!..here's the Deal,...if you have bare concrete.use a xylene base,acrylic silicone concrete sealer,solid color..h+c brand Sherwin Williams and or Loews..my customers drive 60.000 pound provost rv's on and is uv sun ray resistant..we get 13 years lasting. Never peels just slowly fades in a decade ..if your garage floors is painted with some silly waterbase paint..grind it off down to bare cement first.h+c will not show any tire marks...if you use a water base "epoxy seal" brand from h depot it adhere very well but has no sheen! Very dull and definitely shows tire marks....

    Mr. Day, I must have missed it in the video, but did you have to acid wash this concrete? I heard that you pressure washed it and then blew off the dust the day after and then started to paint. I always understood that you must acid wash concrete for paint to properly adhere? Is this not the case with this newer paint technology sir? Thank you

    • @goforce32
      @goforce32 3 года назад

      Take my advise for what it's worth- some guy from the internet. You can paint concrete without acid washing. You need to make sure water soaks into the concrete and see that it has gotten porous. I painted mine one year +, after poured, and the paint came off quickly. Now, it is weathered and porous, so I am doing this exact paint/technique. Love SW paint!

    What was left out of your video was TESTING for moisture!! The day before you should duct tape a plastic sheet, say 18" x 18" for 24 hours. With this being sealed/taped on all four sides, would give you an idea if any mositure is being held in the concrete itself. I dont care what you use, moisture is your biggest enemy to a sealer or any top coat. I've seen quite a few videos that never address the importance of coating concrete without either etching, diamond sand with a buffer, or making sure the slab is moisture free. Secondly some slabs actually put a sealer in its mix as a water proofer, or has had a clear sealer as a top coat after the concrete has cured. These also can be problematic. On every bare concrete slab i've painted, i always used a bonding sealer as the first coat. After 24 hours then you would apply 2 coats of top coat! The best by far is the 2 part epoxy, SOLVENT based coating!

    • @psidvicious
      @psidvicious 3 года назад +3

      That’s actually a very good question. We used to have to do a pH test on newly stuccoed buildings and wait until the levels were sufficiently balanced before applying paint. Short of doing a pH test, you should be ok painting after 28 days.

    • @uomoman8775
      @uomoman8775 3 года назад +2

      28 days. 7 days with a rapid set product. Most manufactures will let you get away with doing a mat test to see if the moisture has evaporated.

    • @MikeDayConcrete
      @MikeDayConcrete  3 года назад +3

      Yea, both good answers here. Most of the time 28 days. This paint withstands high PH, up to 13 so you could paint a little earlier than 28 days with this one.
