Prog is not about the most complex time signatures, or about the number of notes played. It's about taking music to another levels, emotionally, not just technically. Some bands could learn a thing or two from SW.
+Dave PREACH. THE SHIT OUT OF THIS.
Dude, the way this guy can make music with so little instruments and keep it interesting is just a level of musical genius that very very little people on this planet ever had. It's almost unreal to expect anything comparable of a normal human being.
Yeah like (*cough*) Dream Theater (*cough*)
krischin
Exactly, it's unbelievable how talented they are and how little emotion they can express.
I just got so triggered that i dont even know what to say XD no hate. First of all DT is a progressive METAL band, second have you even heard songs like ''the best of times'', ''hollow years'', ''through her eyes'', ''the spirit carries on''? I think prog can be everything that there is. It can be smooth, heavy, fast, emotional. Thats what porg is all about.
Instead of an applauding audience, Steven Wilson's crowd is bawling their eyes out.
This song just destroys me every time I listen to it. I listened to it at such a hard time.
This was his last song for one of his concerts i attended. Someone shouted out while he was singing the first verse- we love you steven .. he was pissed and signaled to the audience to shut up.. It was amazing ... the best part was that there were no idiots holding up their cellphones to take pics/vids. A SW concert is a surreal experience. The sound, music, lights, visuals - everything harmonizes to take you on a spiritual journey.
I saw him in orlando, on friday. An absolutely fantastic visual/auditory experience on m&ms
Darren Pinto Truth.
Or, everything harmonizes to take you on a musical journey.
Same in Vienna. A really small amount of phones
The best explanation I came across till now. Couldn't agree more!
The feel-good hit of the summer!
+Mikeg1 .1 I do a privat Charts since 1979. And this song was not my summer hit! it was the winner of the year. I know his Music since 2001. These man is so good. With PT and other Projects. All is good Music!
I think the joke went over your head...
Actually, I think Steve Wilson's music is great, but some his songs are really depressing!
Yes, it was a joke.
The second part is just too strong emotionally, it's impossible not to cry.
Sing to me PT
I miss you so much.
lol
I feel you..
Agreed
Hopefully PT should get together again...perhaps post COVID??
I doubt they'll get together... they have moved on to their other projects, and I think Steven is so far away from where he started, artistically speaking... I don't think he wants to go back to his old style. I don't particularly like his latest music, but he seems to be enjoying what he does so... sadly, I find it hard to believe. And I miss PT as bad as you guys :(
Steven admitted in a concert that this is the best song he's ever written. I disagree, but it's totally magical live. What a genius, this guy!
Saw this song live in Vienna and you could really see how much emotion conects him to this song
I would agree with him.
I absolutely agree with him
I think I agree, this is one of the best songs written by anybody. It brings me tears. So beautiful and emotive.
When your live recordings sound better than your studio recordings, you've hit the nail on the head with your musical art.
One of the most intense songs of our time…
This is much higher than music,is something extrasensorial...
Steven Wilson is beyond amazing. His music is so beautiful it moves me to tears.
This is the greatest song of this century.
Couldn't agree more Pedro... I listen to and play a phenomenal amount of music both old and new and have done for over fifty five years and this song - this miracle of a song is something play at least once a week.. It is indescribably brilliant... The emotion and power just hammer the senses... Magical.
Uh. No.
Not one single damn phone peeking out from the audience. I love it.
There is no better band than this. I've seen several hundred concerts and I've never seen anyone perform as masterfully time and time again as SW solo and/or Porcupine Tree.
Saw the band in SF this last summer and I can clearly say that this is the most under-rated artist and group ever. The marginalization of progressive rock radio is killing this type of music and it sad because I think it is the most creative outlet for live music today.
This song made my cry on the concert and it makes me cry every time I hear it. No matter, if I am at home, or on the street, or at work. Thank you, Steven, for so many beautiful pieces, for such emotional music. I don´t really care, if you shift to pop or not, I love your music for its honesty, beauty and emotions.
Get chills every time... Steven Wilson and all the wonderful musicians he surrounds himself with are just pure genius. The world needs this music.
Sorry I'll never get to see this lineup again. Perhaps the best he ever assembled. Marco and Govan on one stage with Nicki!!!! Magic
The pain in this song's melody!!!! Thank u Steven for making this. God bless u.
what a melody!!!!what a brilliant writer steven wilson is...........
He always keeps your mind and ears guessing...love that!
Prog is about what?
it is complex, it is emotional.
Why is Steven so beloved in Germany ?
Dont know
but he is the one I love
because he/they are so fucking extraordinary.......
was für ein Wahnsinns-Song. Ich kenne keine Band, die nur annähernd so was live bringt.
What an absolute great setup. I didnt knew that SW played with Minemann and Govan
They played this song at the Hand. Cannot. Erase. tour on its stop in Vancouver on Saturday night. Absolutely brilliant.
Dean Reimer Seen it over here in Montréal as well, best concert I've been at in years. The Raven was mindblowing.
Dean Reimer Saw the Seattle show. Mindblowing!
I thought you were Jordan Rudess for a second
Lol, I wish I had a fragment of his talent and not just his hair.
I was at that Vancouver show. My brother was supposed to be there with me, but my now ex girl friend had gone instead. He shoots himself for it! It was an incredible show!
What's insane is that the Hand. Cannot. Erase. stuff is even better. I saw SW in Helsinki during the HCE tour and it was the best live experience I've ever had. Like totally otherworldly. I had this realisation afterwards that I might not ever see anything like it ever again. I might never experience anything better musically. It sort of made me profoundly sad and happy at the same time.
I just got back from the last show of the tour in Banglore and you are right. It was definitely an unreal experience to see them play live. Loved every moment of it.
thewalrus You explained it so perfectly. It's nothing you can ever describe or experience similarly again.
ALL SW stuff is amazing...but this album may be the best prog album of all time...
just a great and complete album. this song is heart wrenching and seeing it live with some of my dearest made it more special. words really can't describe SW at all.
Jeebus!
What a band!
Govan, Minnemann and Beggs and that dude on flute!
Steve, you are king!
and wilson as just as good live, which is more than can be said for some singers/bands
By the guy on flute, do you mean Travis Barker?
Come on, learn your prog, Travis Barker is on the drums. It was Theo Something, I wanna say Hutchcraft...
Seriously though, it was great having Theo play flute and sax in Don't hate me live. Fantastic crew, each and all of them
The dude on flute is Theo Travis. I recently heard him playing with Steve Howe's son Dylan in a tiny jazz club. He has played with Robery Frippp and check out his work with Soft Machine
This isn‘t music. This is something else...
This is wholly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever encountered.
Underrated
Totally...so many people missing out on this beautiful music...
..Dark poetry,wonderful musical masterpiece...
Wilson, Govan, Minnemann... What. A. Lineup!
Not a single person holding a phone. That's where I want to be.
Its glad to see Govan playin with Wilson.
He might not be that famous but he has something more valuable and that’s our respect ✊🏽
As good as his new Album is..... This song is just fantastic and can not be duplicated..
+Eric I feel that 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' is easily the best and most complete work he's ever released. I can only hope that a future release tops the creative spirit and open-ended writing that was displayed on that concept piece. The subject matter is beautiful, endemic feeling and treated with reverence. Something that cannot be said for the dependant and Looming nature of Hand Cannot Erase. I felt as though even 'Storm Corrosion' had more of a directed sense of style than HCE did; HCE feels more like a collection of songs in a specific yet generalised theme, than a telling of a story in any sense of linearity or composure. Great songs that can stand tall alone but not a great piece of work that is the sum of all of its parts when listened start to end.
Beautiful and I met you Steve in Liverpool at the Lomax with the Tree in around circa 1994/5.. Pleasure :)
Thanks 👍😘🇸🇪! Connection through music through......
Just as moving as Drive Home...beautiful!
His best song with the best band he ever brought together....absolutely brilliant.
Progressive in its max state!!!
Thanks, Wilson
Harrowing. This song makes me lose my shit every goddamn time, and hearing it live doesn't make it any easier. Thanks Steven.
Every man in that stage is a top notch musician, Mr, Wilson is not messing around folks.
I'm listen progressive rock music since late 60's. It is really on the greatest songs that anyone has ever written in a really long time.
I have tears in my eyes listening to this beautifully sad song it's amazing :)
one of the best and most beautiful songs ever.
Literally in tears.. So beautiful! Thank you, Steven!
Album of the decade.
I am in utter awe. The most amazing piece of music I have heard lately. Can't wait to see him and his band this spring.
We've been there in Neu-Isenburg and our Keyboardplayer had the chance to meet the great Adam Holzman. What a breathtaking show in 5.1!
Genius... leaving us speechless...
Their concert in Chicago was hands down the best show I've ever seen. Not even just show, best musical performance I've ever seen in my life. So inspiring.
What a song, what a band, what a voice... Best song of 2013!!!
this is so intense, i nearly had tears in my eyes
Nearly?
absolutamente brillante. wilson un genio por donde se le mire, wilson es un lujo para la música actual. hoy que la basura pareciera adueñarse de todo. wilson es una luz de esperanza . Grande Genio
PERFECT....just .....PERFECT....
the only song that's left me crying in years...
I used to listen to this and sit in my living room to watch my plants grow, they were healthy plants! I think my plants liked Steven Wilson's music too !
Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Such an awesome performance, it's full of feelings and passion not only shown by Wilson but by all the musicians, it's simply beautiful.
Steven Wilson is a musical genius!
...this brings me to tears, beautiful!
This song makes my heart bleed
I just love this song. who could dislike this?
Had the pleaure of attending this concert in Neu-Isenburg. Probably the best I have seen. Some years later, Steven came to the "Alte Oper" in Frankfurt (with Hands cannot erase), and made some remarks about how upscale the venue was. Compared to the later concerts, this line-up in 2013 was better (simply love Marco). There were loudspeakers also in the back of the hall, sometimes used for quadrophonic sounds. Check out some of the other songs he played on Neu-Isenburg - simply superb!
When I listen to this song it feels like this is the only way this song can be sung and played. There aren't many pieces as beautiful as this.
One of the cool things I got to know recently is David Gilmour went to a Steven Wilson concert, and post concert went to meet him backstage. Imagine SW's reaction.
Not surprising as flute player Theo Travis has played saxophone for Gilmour and is a big PF fan, as is SW. Travis has played sax versions of Floyd numbers with his own band.
The progressive rock is not dead ! Magnifical music ! Friendships Steven ! And Marco drummer ! Continu ! Friends !
Best song of the year!!!!!
It's still the best song this year, too. ;-)
Also next year, I predict this..
Although, Steve's got a new album coming out in August, so.... ;-)
God, I want to see him live so bad!
The most beautiful song I have ever heard, the next is Here Comes The Sun by Ghost B.C. All my friends whom I recommended both songs love them too.. TQ Steven Wilson
I was there! It was unbelievable....
even though I didn't really like this TRTRtS song, i started to love it after this performance. when Wilson and his band played Raider II and just after that they played this one, i realised the sense of both of them and why they should be played together. also because IT REALLY WORKS. i don't remember any moment in my life when i cried like i cried in the end of this show. greetings for all SW fans!
This needs to come out on DVD. My only regret is not going to see this concert when I had the chance
I love this song. Literally. It's the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard.
I just want to say, that at 06:13 they could've chosen another shot of Steven. It looks, um... weird for a while.
Bartłomiej Zieliński GAHAHHAHAHAHA HOLY SHIT YES
Your avatar is Alter Bridge's Blackbird dvd sleeve. Right? Wrong? Well, I wouldn't have noticed and even then I needed some imagination. ;)
Ahahahah oh my god 😂😂😂
Willy Wanka style
lol
Good See Marco Minnemman playing with Steven Wilson , we need see more this in future next albums...
i am ashamed of how many times i have watched this (and the animated album version) in the last 72 hours..... even at 43 years old, i dont think i have ever heard a more haunting and emotional song... thanks SW
A truly amazingly talented man with such depth. Musos are top class.
That chorus make me want to cry everytime I listen to this song, that is pure art
Why do I get goosebumps? Why are my eyes filled with tears? Sing Raven, sing. Please, sing..
I was there...wonderful Gig!
Happy birthday Mr. Wilson!
I'm in love so far. Was just sent over here from an amazing drummer, he really likes you guys. I can see why.
We need a dvd from this footage.
How can someone make such brilliant music and yet keep it simple? Steven Wilson you are a genius!
Amazing .... Stupendo, musica meravigliosa.
I can listen to this endlessly... Pure genius.
Adam Holzman is the best keyboard player I've ever heard. And I've heard a lot of them.
Saw him in Milwaukee last week and have listened to him every day since. Absolutely love everything he does.
Sad but beautiful. Would love to see this live with you F!
Anyone else just completely obsessed with this song? Just incredible
I would never stop listening to this song, this is not a song this is an art work.
Perfect melodies, fantastic words elegant and super tecnique. Steven Wilson a genius.
I got to see him live about a month ago. Barely ever listen to this genre of music. This song alone, is one of the most powerful songs I ever heard! The entire band along with Mr. Wilson were amazing. My friend said his voice sounds tired from touring, I didn't notice..glad I got to listen to real music for a change.
Been following this guy for years and I must say I have to agree with you.Wilson is one of the best of our time I am thankfull for this mans music!
Fantastic live version!
All the feels to this part of the concert.
This song is so simple, and yet so hauntingly beautiful. Steven Wilson is a Master Songwriter. Absolutely wonderful.
Einfach alles nur genial, die Musiker, der Song und das Album!
Why on Earth would anyone give this a thumbs-down? What is wrong with you 19 poor souls?
