  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) Mike and Tommy put the Beetle's 10 cu-ft of storage space to the test as they load up Felix with stuff for a college dorm room. Plus, they check out Colorado's largest air cooled VW meet, the Colorado Bug In.

    I like the idea of a non-electrical washer pump. My MGB had a pump like a squirt gun. It was quite relibale as well!!

    Double check the air pressure in your spare tire. Pump it up a little over what the tire is rated for driving on (but not too much). That could be the reason your washer fluid isn't working so well. The system is supposed to have an under pressure protection built in so that it won't take the spare tire under a safe driving pressure.
    Also if you take the fresh air box out of the way again you can chase the hoses that come off the back of the windshield wiper knob/ washer fluid valve and make sure none of them are kinked.
    I have a Clementine Orange '71 SB that I am doing some engine work on. As soon as it runs and drives good I'm going to start the interior.
    Love the series, keep up the good work.

    Back in the mid ‘60’s we went full “clown car” shuttling my grandma back and forth from east coast New Jersey to northeast PA in our VW Beetle. My 6’5” dad in the drivers seat, my 5’ high by 4’ wide momma riding shotgun, myself & brother #2 in the back seat with grandma in the middle, and brothers #3 & #4 in the “cubbyhole” behind the back seat. Didn’t seem all that odd at the time ... pretty funny in retrospect.

    The 1970 Beetle had storage behind the rear seat - what is the panel behind the rear seat on the '71 Super Beetle?

  • @hebneh
    @hebneh 5 лет назад

    The space behind the back seat, below the rear window, was not utilized in this test - and that was a serious omission. While putting anything in there, or taking it out (worse), was a pain, it did provide some substantial space. The stock '71 Super Beetle did not come with a shelf / cover over this area, which mean you could pile stuff up in there. Had this been properly packed, Jeff could have ridden in the back seat, as he ought to have.

    Amateurs! I've fit many times that much shit in my Super Beetle, mostly when moving between Arvada and Fort Collins for school, or helping friends move. Keep packing stuff into the frunk until it won't close, a key thing to note is that the hood isn't flat, it's bowed upward, so you can pile stuff significantly higher than the sides. Flip the back seat forward and pack everything in back there. Then get one of those retro roof racks you were admiring and load it up, get creative with the cargo straps. Usually not that heavy, but I once carried something like 400 pounds of concrete in it, divided between the frunk and rear seat - she didn't go very fast that way, and I felt the suspension bottom out a couple times, but she carried it.
    That bug-in looks awesome, I'm regretting not going.

      I have friends who used to pack full drum kits into their Beetles. I don't know why they guys couldn't get more in. The thing I hate about the roof racks is that they scrape the paint...but they are cool.

    I was able to get 13 liquor boxes in my interior, with plenty of room to see safely. I probably could have fitted 6 to 9 more (also utilizing the trunk as well). I think it has to do with they're head clearance room.

    You guys should do a Ike Gauntlet run in Felix with four of your biggest guys, would be hilarious to watch. Maybe you’ll make in onto the news for shutting down the freeway. Love the videos by the way.

    There is more space under the rear parcel shelf.

    • @michaelXXLF
      @michaelXXLF 6 лет назад +4

      There is a clear plastic latch on the left side of the rear back-seat's back, tucked in between the seat and the side-panel. Find that, pull it and your seat will fold down creating quite a bit of package space.
      Kids used to lie in that space behind the rear seat back in the days, gazing at the night sky.

    That Bear could affect the overheating of the motor as it restricts the airflow to the engine compartment . Everything on the roof should be mounted on a rack.

      There is also a plastic hook below the strap handle (which is to help you get out of the back seat, by the way) on which you hang the seat belt, through a hole in the metal part. I had a '71 Super Beetle and knew this very well.

    I thought that a 71 Super had a boot? Both my 68 and my 70 bug had one. Yours seems to have a weird plastic cover. I think Jeff is what slowed you down BTW.

    Colorado seem to have a good Volkswagen community, I own a silver split screen with a 4.0 TVR in-line 6 supercharged with NO2, a beige 69” T2 with a Porsche 914 flat 4, a beige 69” bug, a blue 67 bug (early whilst the integrated light Porsche contract was still a thing) with a 1746cc flat 4 with a 4 barrel carb and a scooby turbo, a 48” bug full drag racer, a 1978 finale bug, and a karman ghia 1300cc

      My son is 6'2 and fits beautifully in my 75 super. The seats are adjustable so leg room isn't a problem up front. Back seat not so much. 🙂 if you can own an original era Beetle do it! I also had a "2003 New Beetle". Lasted only 10 years before entire writing system went. It's gone... my Lil' Blue lives on!
