1975 I bought a 10 year old Volkswagen 1300, After overhaul, And cylinder rebor, It was 1400 c.c. I took out the front passenger seat, Added roof rack, Waler, I hade a farm tractor, I could pack any thing and every thing in and on that bug. I new that I had done it when I was asked to fetch 3 wood planks, 1x12"x12'. When we got too the Bay-Shore Inn they asked us what we were doing, I told them we were going to aboard meeting, And we were told to bring our own boards. P. S. Off road I could not find a hill I could not climb.
Over haul and rebore, 85 m.p.h.
My grandpa has owned his 73 Beetle since 75 and is soon passing it down too me, really excited for this content 👌
Jaylon P. It your profile pic?
Jaylon P. nice!! Take care of it!!
The first car I owned was a 1964 Beetle that I bought used in 1966. In the spring of 1968, I traded it in for my first new car, a shiny red 1968 Beetle with a massive lust of accessories, I.e. am AM/FM radio. Total price, a nickel less than $2,000. Great car, and I drove it for 6 years and over 100K Miles. I wish I still had one. Oh, and contrary to what you may have heard, “it” can be done in the backseat of a Beetle, though you may wind up with footprints on the inside of the windshield.
Norman Morgan I had many Beetles at a young age. I loved all my beetles. Never tried IT in one, too late now. I would break a hip now lol
That lastcomment about doint "it" reminds me of that line from mallrats
Bought, brand new, a 1964 VW in Portland, OR. Replaced a gas hog of some kind. Could drive from Portland to see the family in the Astoria area (abt 100 miles) for about $1.00 worth of gas. Boy what freedom for a young poor married couple. All total we've owned 4 thru the years. Your video brings back good memories.
I had a 73 beetle in High school. That was 1982 and I drove it into the ground doing the kind of stuff you did that day! It was a wonderful time!
Got my driver's license driving a 1959 VW Westfalia Camper in May of 1960. My father bought the third beatle in Corvallis, OR in 1957. Liked it so much he bought the camper. As a college boy in the early 60's I drove my own '57 beatle. Ran like a top getting 37 mpg, top speed 68 to 70 mph. As long as you changed the oil every 1000 miles and adjusted the valves every 3000 miles that old 1100 cc engine would run forever. Keep up the good work. You're bring back many fond memories.
Hey guys I love your videos. My first car, in 1972, was a one-year-used 71 Super Beetle. You say yours is beige, but to me it looks the same colour as mine, a very pale yellow called Shantun (sp?) yellow. That car was so much fun. The back seat folded down, not quite to flat, so you could load a bunch of stuff in the back and the "trunk". It didn't tend to roll over when turning like the standard beetle. Mine would do 95 MPH flat out. I remember a drive on I90 in upstate New York, driving beside a red Super Beetle, and we both had our feet to the mats and were doing exactly the same speed. My friends all had old Chevs and new Japanese cars, Datsun 510s and Corollas, and made fun of my bug. But my girlfriend could hear me driving up to her dorm from a block away and would be downstairs waiting for me. My Dad used to "steal" my car whenever I was home to do errands, claiming he had to drive it because it was the last car in the driveway. One Sunday morning he backed it into a pole and put a tiny dent in it, then said he'd wrecked it so we had to trade cars. I got a 69 Dodge Monaco out of the deal, which had its own advantages, but I sure miss that Beetle now. Have fun!!
Back in time with Nathan and Roman.
I think the VW “beetle” was the reason Japanese cars became so popular. I owned a 65 new and I recall flat out on the interstate got a whopping 72 miles per hour. In the winter you carried an ice scraper in the car because you had to scrape ice from the inside of the windshield in sub zero temperature. Never saw a beetle with a flower vase or the roof racks you see on many restored cars. The extra weight of luggage and wind resistance would knock your top speed below the posted limits.
Along came Toyota with four doors, a real heater, a usable trunk, and more than 40hp. The rest is history.
You did an excellent review of the car. Compared to the average American land barge of the sixties and some of the sports cars of the era the VW was actually fun to drive. 0-60 forever or 26seconds whichever came first.
The vw was a great car for its time. Well made and efficient unlike American AND Japanese cars in the 50s and 60s. People put up with the lousy heater etc because they were so reliable and practical unlike other cars of that era. The issue was that vw didn’t do much other than gradually improve things over the years. For example they had 60hp and would do 0-60 in 18 seconds in the 70s, which was still fairly competitive for its class but what really hurt was they kept the same body design which was no longer space efficient by the 70s and finally and while things like the heat did get better, the Japanese had the efficiency and quality by the 1970s without the shortcomings. I would argue that the vw was still more durable and still got good gas mileage for this time but in many respects it no longer had an advantage over its Japanese competition as it did in preceding decades. Final, by the late 70s, the dm vw USD caused the price to rise so that it was considerably more money than its competition.
When I first started driving (in 1989), used, original Beetles were still pretty plentiful. I test drove a '74 and it did not drive well, felt very sluggish. So after that experience didn't get one. I later drove a friend's Beetle that was well sorted and well tuned and it was a huge difference. Felt nice and peppy.
The "air through antenna" is the deal maker for me.
Cool! My beetle was a 1973 Super in orange. Bought from an elderly couple (neighbors). I owned it while I was stationed at Norton AFB while in the Air Force in the mid '80's. Drove it between San Bernardino and LA quite a bit. My wife loved it too. Wish I had towed it home to Michigan and kept it.
I had 4 friends in my 67 and the suspension wasn't happy with the weight lol. I still love it
I had a '71 standard Beetle and my brother had a '73 Super Beetle. As I recall, the main difference VW marketed was not just the dimensions, but also the "modern" MacPherson front strut suspension. Standard Beetles had torsion bar suspension.
augsburg the front suspension is by far the biggest change for the super beetle.
I like the regular Beetle much better, front suspension was much more durable.
I thought the Super Beetle had the rounded windshield, not flat. Or am I mistaken?
You are partially correct, 1971 and 72 Super Beetles had Flat Windshield, 1973 started the Curved.
Andrew Silver I always thought that was the case. Also the taillights should be the large round tri color units
Awesome...reminds me of riding in my uncle's beetle. My grandfather also had the vw bus as a work van, loved that too.
That car you have isn't "Savannah Beige" but rather "Yukon Yellow." :D
I had one just like it for several years. It was in good tune; it could actually hit 78mph top speed with a stock engine.
The age of the various plastics in the wiring insulation started to be a problem, and after a while it would start draining the battery overnight, and once it even let out a little of the magic smoke. Turned out to be the power wire for the wipers. Disconnected that and used Rain-X for a while and also had a hole cut in the top of the glove box so I could just push the wipers back and forth manually.
Kelli Halliburton It’s actually kansas beige!
I'd say my beetle is pretty different! I really enjoyed this.
This was GREAT ! I can't wait for the next one. (former VW Beetle owner here)
Being close to the windshield was actually an advantage. It made it much easier to wipe the fog off the windshield, which was necessary since the defroster was hopelessly inadequate.
Lotta fun to watch. Had zillions of them things over the years and loved em all. Thanks fellas!
That bug looks pale yellow ✨
Just like mine 👌😙
2 floor jacks, 4 bolts and 15 minutes and the engine is out! My buddy and I did it several times with his Beetle! :D
And his was most definitely driven in a "spirited, racy manner!" ;)
Hint: In the winter, when the heater is on full, keep your foot away from the heater vent in the floor! I can burn a tennis shoe!
You guys are very entertaining. Keep up the great work.
Great video. Looking forward to the next in the series.
In 1971, the big behemoth cars from Detroit where many things, but slow was not one of them. At least not in a straight line. Otherwise, loving this series of videos!
They actually weren’t much quicker than a beetle. Any econobox from today would destroy all any land yacht from the USA back then in a quarter mile.
That was awesome! Excited to see more!
Excellent work boys! I am looking forward to all of the tests:)
Yes , I agree, well done job , guy's.
I'm looking forward to more video on this wonderful little car.
Great video Mike!
Great video. Good luck with your Super Beetle. I had an early Beetle. No radio, but a very fashionable plate where you could put one. No fuel gauge either. You could flip a lever to switch to the reserve tank. Only one sun visor too (for the driver). Ha ha. What fun.
That modern radio (that doesn't work) looks so out of place in that Beetle. I wish there was more of a market out there for retro - looking car audio for classic cars.
Daniel Reigada There are replacement radios for classic cars, especially Volkswagens.
Daniel Reigada there is, they swap that modern radio for a retro one in episode 5
I have a retro radio in my bug that has hands free, Bluetooth and aux 😎
This was so funny. Already loving this series.
Awesome video guys 😎💪
Great video guy's!!
Fun video! That engine... Looks like you have all the original bits! What a great survivor. That is amazing for a car still on the road for more than 35 years! Looking forward to your adventures! I guess I didn't know you are in Colorado! You should stop by some time :)
Great video guys love the beetle
Make a Harlekin out of it, every body panel in a different color. Would look so cool.
Love it. Had the same super beetle in orange.
IT IS A CAR!!!!!!!!!!.............more than the most luxurys car. The VW Beetle and Super Bettle has soul, History, style, personality..............there are not other car with this characters.............almost probably, the Citroen 2CV and the Renault 4L.......
Great video guys
The Tommy & Mike show. I look forward to more videos. You two have good chemistry. Reminds me of some of the road trip videos with Roman & Nathan.
VW Beetle “Spend less on Speed & more on Weed”
Tim Fox 😂
53k original miles. yeah right! It at least has 153k since the odometer repeats to 0 after 99,999
What the best way to slow down? Down shift? Clutch and break at the same time? Or something else?
My first car was a 64 bug. The exhaust fumes were always somehow wafting into the cabin.
Fun video men
Nice review
Are you going to try cram 20 college girls in the Beetle like they did in 2010 at Ashbury University? Don't forget wheelies and flapping doors, hood & trunk like Herbie!
The VW bug is just as crude as my first vehicle, a very well used '72 Datsun pickup. Since my Datsun pickup was liquid cooled however, it might of had a slight edge over the bug.
I smell an air cooled engine upgrade in this things future. I believe fast and loud did an upgraded beetle in the past. Could be fun, 200+ hp in a classic beetle would be pretty quick.
Apart from the broken this broken that after all it's an old car and still going strong and runs good compare this age with any modern day car it will be actually in the junk but a good video and just enjoying u guys taking it for tests as i myself owning 4 beetles a 56 58 63 & 66 and i love them all😘 keep the videos coming and u got a fan all the way from kenya😎 jambo and karibuni Kenya yetu😊
Did u guys see that Beetle’s truck pretty cool
jack bing yeah
jack bing kinda makes me wonder why they didn't have a model of that Volkswagen here in the US
The gas smell also comes from the charcoal canister under the bonnet meant to absorb fuel vapors. It probably quit working years ago
Steven Conway charcoal canister is in right rear fender well IIRC so the engine could suck it down. But numerous vent lines to the charcoal canister and the fill tubes are known to leak. Dash is not totally sealed and Air leaks through the trunk then the dash bringing in vapors.
Fuel filter above the distributor gave me major anxiety...
whch episode do they put the radio in
This reminds me of high school in the early 60s and a pretty girl and her old beetle. Her beetle had no fuel gauge. You were supposed to guess when to fuel up, but if you ran out, she said it had a "spare tank" which, in truth, was a longer pickup in the only tank. There was a simple handle on the floor up under the dash. Low tech.
"A 1963 Volkswagen Beetle" - Herbie 53
What is the name if that Volkswagen Truck in 2:02?Pls tell me it will also be the name of this truck when its already a hotwheel that will arrive in 2019 mainline
Great video. Are you guys gonna have the vehicle tuned up by a mechanic??? Nothing major, but a mechanics opinion on some maintenance tips or work you can do to keep the Beetle going strong.
Yes
good luck finding a mechanic nowadays that can do that car any good...your better off putting in new points and setting the timing yourself
One of the best VW mechanics I ever knew was never trained on it. He'd been an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force.
You guys should do it all yourself. It's super easy. You'd be amazed what re-tourquing the heads and adjusting valves does for power and efficiency.
they still have the beetle or have already sold it
4:17 How many unrestored 47 year old cars have such a solid "thunk" when you close the doors ?
Donde consigo el evaporador 71 super betler debajo dash
The left headlight is usually on the left side of the car.
the "fan" switch is only for fresh air. has nothing to do with heater.
Derek Riley I never really understood the purpose. Just roll the windows down. Ton of airflow
Are you kidding, ill buy it right now.
AS the GERMAN SOLDIER ON that old TV show with ROWAN and Martin "VERY INTERESTING" make sure Ruth Buzie doesn,t hit u too with her pocketbook for your corney comments! BUT overall guys good job
I learned to drive in a Beetle.
Makes sense that the shitty aftermarket radio doesn’t work.
How could you tell it was 52K original miles?
So, is the Beetle Diaries series over now?
I don't know if it has been mentioned but I don't believe they are driving a Super Beetle. I thought super beetles had rounded front windshields?
Google 1971 super beetle please
TFLnow
73 got the rounded windows. I grew up spotting super beetles looking for the windshields. I stand corrected. Good show.
Do you chaps realise that one of the reason for the Mexican beetle being taken off the road four doors, were needed Will it have abs seat belts crash comfort zone. It wil lhave to compete with so many other models. Has it got a blower motor.
And it had the cabin space of a Cessna airplane!
Pity you folks didn't find an "automatic" super beetle (2 speed transmission with shift lever activated clutch).
Actually 3 speed semiauto!
1971 they were two speed semi-automatic, if you were patient you could leave it in high range all the time. The fan switch is only for ventilation the heat was pushed by the motor cooling fan through channels under the floor. In a Canadian winter you were lucky if the heated air wasn’t quite as cold as the air inside the car. Most beetle drivers mastered steering with one hand and scraping the windshield with the other.
Super Trouper
Get that fuel filter out of the engine bay.....not a stock location.
The indicator doesnt auto cancel
you can replace that small boxer motor with a Porche 911 boxer motor
You two are so gorgeous!
Makes the Mitsubishi Mirage look like a luxury cruiser....
You guys should do a comparo to the 3 banger Mits Mirage?....
Frank E that piece of junk? I like Mitsubishi but the Mirage is a huge no.
When did Super Beetles get curved windshields?
1973
Automated manual transmission would make this car great automobile for city driving
I was hoping the video would be 13:02 in legnth
super beetles have a curve windshield
Had to have room for Jimmy Durante's nose in the ads!
And in 74 at least when I bought mine a different dashboard
1971 and 1972 Super Beetles had Flat, starting in 1973 had the Curved.
my 2014 4runner doesn't even open the gas door from the inside
It’s the Izzy & Dizzy Show....
how about living with the beetle like it's 1971.....NO ELECTRONICS. turn off all electronics. see what it's like to have freedom and to be on your own.
It is a big pleasure to have and drive a vw beetle
Can i fly you both to Sydney sometime, be awesome to meet you.
Hard to imagine people pro-creating in the back seat of the VW...
If they can fit 20 college girls in a Beetle like in 2010, I guess it can work.
Just don't try to make a car out of it with AC. Belt would disintegrate in 50 miles in Phx AZ
those miles could be 153000
Looks like Ted Bundy’s Beetle
Police car beetle?...how fast?
it might go 80...did you forget, in europe they dont need fast police cars
Dennis Koller
Irrelevant. It was used by municipal police forces.
Slowest. Drag. Race. Ever. 😂😂😂
Get Felix a new paint job!
Please do an EV West electric conversion!
Ford would have ruined the Beetle.
Damn you two are hot!
Ash tray in the back seat *insert Jew joke*
my 71 super beetle had a 2.0.. You guys are misinformed..
Then it was not stock. These came with a 1584cc (1600).
