    My Father had a 1972 autostick super beetle. The standard beetle's spare tire stood straight up in the front under the hood and didn't offer much protection in a front end collision. The super beetle's spare tire lay flat in the front under the hood, this made the tire absorb some of the impact and made the chances of getting out of the crash much better.

    I believe the 71 Super Beetle was the peak Hp beetle. Also besides handling improvements, the struts in the front made for additional luggage space in the trunk, which was a major selling point for the Super Beetle. The ‘71 SB is unique in that it had the flat windshield, old style steering wheel and oil bath engine air cleaner. I think the ‘72 SB had the plastic steering wheel and maybe a different air cleaner. Not positive on the last point. I’ve owned a ‘71 SB since 6/72. Redid the front end bushings a few years ago and it brought the handling back to normal and eliminated the infamous death-rattle associated with the SB. Great video as always. Thanks for sharing!

    My first Beetle was a 72 Super that I bought in 1989. I didn't know the difference at the time and often regretted having the Super once I realized what I had. I made the most of it and made a "Cal-style" bug out of it. Lowering struts, one-piece windows, Empi wheels and I put a cloth rag-top in it. I dumped a ton of money into a 1776 that was way better than the car deserved. I enjoyed it, but always hated the bulbous nose. I'm much happier now w/ my '63. Opinions vary and I have no problem w/ people loving their Supers; it just wasn't/isn't my preferred style. My 72 still had the flat windshield, flat dash and smaller tail-lights.

    20:27 Fun fact: The grill under the frunk hood was for the (optional) AC, nobody wanted in Europe for it made 1/3 of the car's price. Guess they all went to USA. We have no speed limit on German Autobahn and rather put a front oil cooler there.

      I'm German and both were offered 1200/ 34hp, 1500/ 44hp + 1600/50 hp. "LS" was "all options" + 50hp and that badge was only used until 1973. Later models just got "1200" or "1303" Only 50hp had serial disc brakes .

      I talked with an old guy who had one with that option, and that's the first question I asked given I have a 71 super beetle without it. He said it worked really well ice cold apparently, which was a surprise to me. This is in Minnesota, so hot humid summers too. Out of curiosity I also asked what happened to it, had a accident which they weren't at fault and that was pretty much the end of it. His only complaint was the heater.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  Год назад +1

      From what I understand, the air conditioning surprisingly worked somewhat well. I have never had one, but I am going to look into some thing. Aftermarket air conditioning for these. If I can find it worthy, I will purchase it and do a video if it’s affordable.

      I just do the best that I can.
      And I try to keep it somewhat fun and interesting.
      Or sometimes I humiliate myself by showing mistakes. 🤷🏻‍♂️ But I like to keep it real.
      I think there is only a small portion of folks, that have high end dollars.
      I just try to keep it real. Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos, and most of all thank you for commenting.

    • @jimo199966
      @jimo199966 Год назад

      @SladesVWBeetle I think "keeping it real" means showing mistakes and not being afraid to own it. When it's time to take a breath, walk away for a bit, then taking a new approach. My first car was a 1960 beetle with a canvas sunroof. It was towed from where I bought it, and a local VW guru put in a new fresh air 40 engine. The 6 volt electrical could be a challenge at times. 😆🙇‍♂️
