  • @gslifelix
    @gslifelix 2 года назад +265

    Fun fact.. Hildur Guðnadóttir, the composer of the incredible score in this film (she won the Oscar for it) wrote much of it from reading the script alone. The director played a recording of The Bathroom Dance song and Phoenix, with no further instructions just went completely into the character and improvised the whole scene on the spot.

    • @garyglaser4998
      @garyglaser4998 2 года назад +16

      Yes! Initially, the public bathroom scene was written as Arthur panicking and trying to figure out what his next move would be but Phoenix and Phillips realized it wasn't working. Phillips had just received the piece from Hildur Guðnadóttir that day and decided to play it and Phoenix improvised the dance. Movie magic.

    I think you are correct that The Joker doesn’t actually have an origin story! Which is why it’s so cool that every time they make a new one, it’s a different version/take on it, and it’s cool to see what new “back story” they’ll give him!

    • @vvanheukelum
      @vvanheukelum 2 года назад +18

      I feel the same way. Even in The Dark knight you see how he changes his story to be relatable to the person he's telling it to. When talking to Gambol (who freaked out when he mentioned his mother) he makes the story about his dad beating his mother. When talking to Rachel (a woman he calls beautiful and works for the justice department) he makes it about his wife losing her beautiful appearance to being cut by gangsters. And here he tells a story to psychiatrists about how it's caused by mental issues.

      All the writers of the various runs of any Batman comic were given the ok by DC to change the Joker origin story. At first it was just because they did not pay attention to continuity but it became a running thing with the Joker. At any one time there may be a number of different origin stories for the Joker that he tells. The writers see this as proving the fact that the Joker is not in control of his own mental capacity. You can never trust the Joker as a narrator.

  • @glennwelsh9784
    @glennwelsh9784 2 года назад +390

    It's a great film but so harrowing to watch. I've only been able to watch it twice - once in theaters and once on home media - because it's such a distressing movie. It manages to shine a light on how mental illness has historically been poorly addressed in society. People struggling with their mental health end up getting stigmatized and marginalized because mental illness is misunderstood and has often not been considered a "real" sickness deserving of the same kid of attention as physical illnesses. So the common response is to either ignore it, heavily over-medicate them, or lock them away in psych wards or institutions because they just don't wanna deal with the issue.
    It is particularly worse for those who are also impoverished, as they can fall victim to government-provided mental health services that are subject to insufficient funding and budgetary cuts. So people who truly need real help can't get it simply because they can't afford it, and people like Arthur Fleck can fall through the cracks and become a danger to themselves and others. The film just manages to frame these issues within the origin story of one of the most infamous villains in fiction.

    Any interpretation of the Joker origin is valid because…there is no true origin story. There were stories about him being raised by an abusive father who beat him, but as far as childhood, there’s no real back story. His criminal origin has various different characters, though. He’s actually a version of a character in a novel called “the man who laughs” and was just a mix of dark personalities.

This movie is a beautiful display of the agony and pain people with mental health issues go through, it is quite possible said mentally unwell people could idealise it as themselves but again, that isn't because of the movie, those people were already unstable.

    Joaquin Phoenix is someone who is such a good actor he hand picks his roles. And I ly does ones he can get passionate about. He had no idea who the joker was. He just read the script and said. This is an amazing role. His brother was the real actor out of the two. But he died early on from a drug overdose. After that Joaquin ended up playing his brother in a movie about his brothers life and death. It really screwed with Joaquin's mind state. And after coming out the other side was and is arguably one of the best actors of all time.
    Also the Joker, is more of an idea. A mindset. Because in several different comics all taking place in what has been confirmed to be the multiverse (dc did it first on screen btw) the joker is like a different person with a different origin story in every Batman. And is usually depicted as being like 15 to 20 years older then the Batman sometimes more. The joker is truly a versatile character in terms of origin, mystery and madness.

    The Graphic novel "The Killing Joke" written by Alan More, and is arguably considered the official back story of the Joker. I think this has taken bits of influences from different Graphic novels/comics, "The Killing Joke" being one of them.

    That is the thing, even in the comics there's actually no canonical beginning of the Joker. It keeps changing but the main theme is based off of one bad day .. one bad day can make somebody into something they aren't. Other than that they keep telling us we're getting the origin of the Joker and they change it all the time it's because we'll never really get actual origin, so the movie plays right into it

    In terms of comics the movie takes some inspiration from Batman: The Killing Joke, but it also takes inspiration from a lot of other movies and stories as well as the writers' own ideas.

    This movie is a masterpiece. I’m not a huge fan of DC characters outside of Aquaman and Wonderwoman but I really enjoy what they did with this character.
    Yeah, first time watching it is very difficult to figure out what’s real and what’s in his head sometimes. I think it’s representative of maladaptive daydreaming at its worst and most intense. He can’t handle reality so these daydreams are part of his escape from it. It’s unhealthy but it helped him deal with it to a certain extent.
