    JOKER MOVIE REVIEW |
    Joker Movie Description:
    Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks -- the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.
    Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed and produced by Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and provides a possible origin story for the character. Set in 1981, it follows Arthur Fleck, a failed clown and stand-up comedian whose descent into insanity and nihilism inspires a violent counter-cultural revolution against the wealthy in a decaying Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort, in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros.
    Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese (particularly Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy), who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The film loosely adapts plot elements from Batman: The Killing Joke (1988), but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. Joker is the first live-action theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association.
    Joker had its world premiere at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019, where it won the Golden Lion, and was released in the United States on October 4, 2019. While Phoenix's performance, the direction, editing, musical score, and cinematography were praised, the dark tone, portrayal of mental illness, and handling of violence divided opinions and generated concerns of inspiring real-life violence. Despite this, Joker was a box office success and set records for an October release. It grossed over $1 billion, the first R-rated film to do so, and became the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2019 during its theatrical run. The film also received numerous accolades. At the 92nd Academy Awards, it earned a leading 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, winning Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.

I knew a girl that was agoraphobic, and when we would go to house parties she used to go hide in a closet to calm down for a bit because she felt it was a safe space for her when she felt freaked out. Maybe Phoenix knows people who do that and used it to show Arthur calming down.

    The thing I love the most is how Arthur's outbursts of laughter lessen throughout the film as he stops trying to conform to a profoundly sick society. It's like prior to that, he subconsciously gets that it's all a big joke, and so he has these outbursts that show what he really thinks about those situations. Once he stops caring about trying to fit in and be 'normal', they drop off because he's no longer trying to suppress his real self, and in the end, he becomes what society has made of him.
    When you treat people like garbage who are just looking for help, well..... you get what you fucking deserve.

    This movie made me really emotional for some reason when I first watched it, especially during the "bathroom dance" (I even teared up a little). I fell in love with Joaquin Phoenix in this movie, his performance was incredible, and I was so mesmerized by him. It made me upset that many people criticized and hated this version of The Joker, but I think it's actually a much more realistic representation of becoming the villain and much more mature in a way how it touches the subjects such as mental illness etc.

  • @cpob2013
    @cpob2013 2 года назад +55

    I think that it's really powerful how, in the 3rd act, it's the climax of the movie sitting on set, and we know he planned to show up, have a couple pleasantries, and then blow his head off, but then he decides to confess to the shooting, and explain himself. Arthur has grown to stand up for himself, he defends himself, and is going to make people see him and listen to him instead of backing away and taking himself out. He argues with his idol and father figure and grows out of the last shred of his old life. Instead of suicide, he makes the "healthier" choice of killing Murray Franklin, fighting back against his problems instead of self harm to cope.
    And the real tragedy is there were so many points where this spiral could have been stopped. The police could have immediately notified him of his mother and respectfully given him space. His boss could have listened to him when he was jumped. Murray Franklin even still could play Arthur's bit and tease it but end on a note of encouragement to work at it and get better. And we saw there were decent people in the world, Randall the clown coworker and the Arkham clerk but just didn't know what to do to help. If anyone in the world had just stopped and given this poor man a hug, it could have stopped. But they didnt.

    Joaquin played the perfect Joker in my opinion. A lot of people can't get the nuance of Joker being over the top comedian while also being able to turn on a dime and remind you that he will slit your throat while laughing about it. Joaquin was able to do both at the same time.

Another stellar performance from JP and and equally impressive performance from Reese Witherspoon. Joaquin literally transformed into Johnny Cash and even sounds a lot like him when he sings. Watching the bathroom dance scene was uniquely difficult because at the zenith of my pain I did snap and found myself choking someone... if it weren't for one friend who snapped me back to reality I very well could have killed the kid being much larger.... And what I remember of how I felt in the moment... my hands around his throat watching his face turn colors and his eyes rolling back into his head... I felt... powerful... I felt in control.... I felt free. It's my biggest regret and this movie forced me to sit there in the theater and confront that. This movie is a powerful work of art.

    You want to see a great Joaquin performance? Try Inherent Vice by Paul Thomas Anderson. Joaquin is a stoner private eye in the late 60s early 70s. He’s trying to solve a case that ends up being more than he was ready for. He makes choices that blew my mind in a great way. He also made an impact with the same director in a film called The Master. He plays a very unstable sailor looking for something to identify with. Give them a shot.

    Somehow I missed this reaction! I think the scene where he dances in the bathroom, & Joker is born, is one of the most beautiful scene’s on film. And then bringing it back when he is about to go on Murray’s show, hearing the mocking as his fuel. This performance was just a diff level, Joaquin went so far above & beyond, & the fact he’s “crazy” yet speaks such truth’s whilst speaking with “Mur-ray” is just mind blowing. I could watch this a million times, & still be so impressed. 🖤🃏🃏🃏

    This is the one movie that has an actor who for once actually nailed the skeletal appearance of The Joker, but it would've been nice to see him as The Joker for a little bit longer. That's the only weakness in this film in my opinion. I feel the final third of the movie should've been The Joker, not just the final two scenes.

    Great vid!
    Gotta disagree with you about an affair with Thomas Wayne, I think it’s completely fabricated, right down to his signature on the photograph. Notice Arthur pays it no heed and crumples the photo.
    The only real evidence is the concept that Thomas Wayne is rich and arrogant, and thus must be a liar in the eyes of general people. The reality is rich people are constantly approached in that way by psychologically damaged people. Watch who comes out of the woodwork when you win a lottery. As someone who’s dated a Narcissist I can tell you their delusions go deep and they never admit the truth. His mother was a monster & Wayne just had no fucks to give imo.
    Also bonus points for young Penny Fleck having more than a passing resemblance to Harley Quinn, setting up Joker’s “type” that he’d like to abuse.

      That could all be true and he just thinks that because he is a narcissist, but also maybe he crumpled it because he really didn't care if it was true or not anymore. She didn't protect him and let him get abused when he was a child, even if she was his foster mom, and Wayne punched him and didn't care about her and him as he says he does with all of his employees. That's the beauty of it, it really could go either way. Or it could be a version of his life that he likes and is telling this person because he likes messing with people to let their guard down. And your right about the possible Harley connection. People do tend to look for particular looks and traits in a significant other because that's what they're familiar with in their parents or siblings.

      @@moonakieater2308 Maybe Arthur recognized his mother’s handwriting on the back of the photo. Someone should freeze frame & compare it to her letter to Wayne. I’m just saying it would have to be a *massive* conspiracy (something everyone with NPD thinks they’re the victim of) for her to be telling the truth, and even if she was, she herself was still a psychopathic narcissist outside of the affair.
      On the other end imagine you’re Wayne and it’s not true. This woman’s been dogging you for decades, causing havoc in your marriage with her lies, and finally sending her adopted son to assault your young child and butler at your home. I think punching Arthur in the face was too nice considering the facts. Not to mention they have absolutely zero family resemblance lol

    • @moonakieater2308
      @moonakieater2308 2 года назад +1

      @@vartanpapazian8342 yeah, that's why I said when he saw the photo he crumpled it up because he didn't care if it was true or not. If he wanted to, Thomas could've easily used his power to stop her, don't you think? But he also could've used it to get away with it. Look at Trump.😜🤣 And I think they do have a little resemblance with the nose though, no? And that's why it's a great movie. It gives you so many conflicting things that you can come up with your own theories.

    While a 9.5/10 awesome movie and an acting tour-de-force, this is not the best Joker. The Joker might be insane, but he's a criminal and a natural leader. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker would be eaten alive by the REAL criminal underworld. Heath Ledger is closer to the comic book Joker than any other film adaptation.
    Again, I really love this movie. I just can't get behind the idea that this is the "REAL" Joker.
    Fun Fact: In the scene where Arthur is in the audience of a comedy club, the performing comedian is Gary Gulman, who is an actual stand-up comic. The bit he performs about role-playing with his girlfriend can be heard on Gulman's 2012 "No Can Defend" album.

    You know every time I've heard this joker laugh, I would always try to figure out like what the laughter sound like. And now I got it. It's he's laughing to keep from crying. Like he's a literally on the edge of snapping but there's only one or two things that may be holding him back. And that's sad and creepy at the same time. How many people have been in that position where they're just literally laughing to keep from crying and they haven't been pushed over the edge yet? Anyone at some point in their lives have been in that position. But they haven't been pushed enough.

    I am grateful that this movie was so well received in terms of film making and also mental health awareness. In today's harsh social climate where there is an oversaturation of people adapting and self diagnosing mental illness just to have an identity, it's become even harder to ask for help, and reach out if you're the one looking to help, because you can't be sure whether to take the person seriously or not, or if you yourself can be taken seriously. But if we can, it is our responsibility still to look after ourselves. Arthur is just an example of someone who was truly doomed. Amazing movie in all regards. Joaquin killed it in this one.
