The entire Village Green Preservation Society album is brilliant; the best way to listen to it is while taking a walk on a sunny day, among the fields and birds and leaves and things.
I love this band so much! Watching them play surely puts a smile on my face, be it because of Dave's undying smile or because of Ray's extraordinary talent for songwriting and composing. I wish the world had appreciated them more when they were still together.
The KinKs' "Village Green" album is an exceptional piece of musical work. It does not get the credit it deserves. Picture Book is one of my favorites. Ray Davies once again tells a story everyone can relate to, and he does it better than anyone.
I can't believe it's taken me this long to "discover" the Kinks...i've always liked their songs, but I never really connected my various favorites with the band....now I am actually making a point of looking up their stuff and going "Oh! I LOVE this song! I didn't know they did this one!" Most of their music was just stuff I'd love when I hear it, but I never really knew who performed it. Well, I've been converted, I am officially a Kinks Fan!
And, then there are a 'few' who have actually posted that the Kinks albums were nothing but filler! Then what were these two songs? Mind you; this was during a five year period when they were banned from performing in the USA. They received very little airplay for their singles, and their albums were never given prominent displays in the record shops. But, I would put these two tracks against anything the Beatles or the Rolling Stones had on their 'long play's' of the same period.
Not gonna lie, The Kinks were rocking hardcore at this time. I just dont think they were quite appreciated enough, (and I'm sure it had plenty to do with their ban from the USA), they were overlooked because they chose to stick to what they liked and wanted, where as bands like the Rolling Stones were just dipping into their true colors in 68' Beggars Banquet and the White Album were great, but in terms of a concept album, I'd put Village Green right up there with the other greats!
Actually they are all singing, if you listen close you can hear the studio track playing and the mics are on and they are singing along. About 5:14 you can hear Dave Davies clearly, and it's different than the album. Kind of like karaoke, but with their own album. That is why the vocals sound double tracked on this.
asterius909 they all did that back in day..Watch Soul Train 70s vids sininging and the invisible band getting thier groove on. Best way to really see the reality is the vintage David Bowie Starman in beginning can see him look at Ronno and realize thier is 1 live mic
I watched an interview with Ray Davies, and on it he said he wasn't as pretty as Mick Jagger... You know, I think he's beautiful and you can really see his soul when he sings. I don't know, Mick doesn't really do it for me.
I agree, Ray Davies's beauty comes from his artistic soul. Mick Jagger could be sexy to others, but certanly not to me and I never got the Jagger mania.
This was there best album by far. Even if it flopped upon release, The Kinks were discredited and pioneered/inspired a good number of rock bands in that era. Underrated!!
The best two songs on Village Green! My 8 yr son makes me play Last of the Good Old Fashioned Steam Powered Trains constantly. He excellent musical taste. I love Picture Book myself. Apparently, so did Billy Joe Armstrong.
I can't either - my admiration for them is beyond words and anything I came up with would be woefully inadequate - love them all, but especially enjoy watching Dave play - brings a smile to my face everytime!
What a fabulous talented band; I was lucky enough to see them twice (79 and 82) and Ray solo as the first MTV Unplugged artist. Ray signed my copy of his autobiography X-Ray when he did his tour for that project; the audiece at George Washington Universit supplying harmony backing and bathing Ray with rapt symboitic adoration... Dave's book 'Kink' is also a great read
Only got to see them once, but they were still together--I almost hoped somebody would fight, after hearing so much about it, but I didn't want the music to stop! Great, great show from a legendary band.
They really look like they're enjoying doing their Green Preservation tunes. Such a shame their original bassist left shortly after this. He gave their earliest classic tunes some of the personality I think.
He later said that he walked away from the band after this, as he just couldn't take the tension and in-fighting between all of the other guys anymore, and never looked back. Plus, their most recent singles such as "Plastic Man" (which he hated) were not chart hits, neither were their last few albums, and he probably thought the band was going to break up.
Yep. Studio backing track, live vocals. Are they the original album backing tracks? Sounds like it, but you can never be sure. This was standard procedure with bands back then for TV show appearances, mainly on the BBC.
That are the original album backing tracks. The vocals are live tho, bc it's obviously different from the album track. Dave's voice is way more hearable here
For people who've been asking about the origins of this clip it's from the 1st of Feb. 1969 and it's from the Julie Felix BBC2 TV Show "Once more with Felix". The 5th Dimension were on the same show. A truly outstanding clip thought lost for 40 years. We need a truly extensive and respectful 60's DVD of The Kinks especially now that Pete has passed. A million DVD's of pure shite adorn the shelves of music stores across the globe and no KINKS.....shameful. Long live RUclips I say. T.
What a gift to get to see them so young and enthusiastic! And my two favourite tracks off that album! This was a real treat to watch. And that Ray... what a snazzy dresser.
Ray and Dave should just stop hating on each other and realize they both brought great talent to this band as well as their band mates, I say this as someone who grew up in a HIGHLY dysfunctional family.
I've seen this video several times, and love it. VGPS is such a brilliant album, and has timeless appeal. All the Kinks look and sound great, and Ray's expressiveness is beyond description...love the gap!

definitely. seems the vocals mics are live but those instruments are pre-recorded. i was trying to figure it out, and here are the clues: 1. avory hitting the snare like crazy in steam powered trains, or various fills not exactly lining up if you watch closely 2. snare sound changes from one song to the next 3. the drums aren't mic'd 4. ray throws both his hands up in the air at some point during picture book but you can still hear the acoustic guitar strumming.
Ray playing the harp! Pretty good, and live! I always wondered who played harmonica on this Wolf-inspired number (a very original reinterpretation of Smokestack Lightning). Less of a "copy" of blues than many British Invaders, but then Ray's such a good writer.
Great band kinda underrated compared to The Beatles,Stones,The Who but just as god if not better I have to say right here ,right now The Kinks were the better band but that will probally change with the next band I watch

@beamer767 Ah! Well, it is definitely better than the other studio versions so I am glad you had it and posted it. Haven't quite cracked it singing and playing on the uke but that is because I have been v lazy - good song for the uke :-)
This would have been 1968, as this performance has the late Peter Alexander Greenlaw Quaife on bass (Pete claims that the "Greenlaw" was just a bit of fiction..R.I.P.) Here, the whole band seems to be having fun--especially Pete and Dave!
Waving hands in the air to show it's not live! They were so, so young! But the songs Ray wrote were so mature you'd think they were nearing 40 years old!
@LIBERTINEPARANOIC I don't know what part of the world you live in... but this kind of stuff was only popular in England back then. @msmousette - These are the studio versions, they're miming along. However, it sounds like some new reverb was applied to the old mix, it might be a clearer mix than the album, too.
Many thanks for sharing - much better than the studio versions, which sound a bit weak by comparison. I love "Last of The Steam Powered Trains" but am less keen on Picture Book so I have clipped your video and posted just LOTSPT (don't think I can include and url in comments - it keeps coming up with an error). My favorite album of all time!
'On a dew soft hedge creeps a cruddy caterpillar, well the dawn begins to crack. It's all part of my autumn almanac'!
Village green album,is one of the most underrated albums of all time, along with muswell .hillbillys

THE most underrated album at its time and ever since.
Yeah man! The 'Lola' LP is fab! A great concept album!
I think its the best album of the 60s ...as far as consistency
Only in sales.
Most underrated band of all time. Love The Kinks!
bullshit , underrated.. They were one of the most popular bands in their era... and still have profound influence on many newer acts
Pete Quaife plays a nice bassline
The Kinks are just all great songs - better than any other band !! Period ! -

Of it hadn't been for the Beatles monopoly, the Kinks would have been far more popular.

The classic or original lineup. RIP Peter Quaife.

Welcome Friend.
Mick Avory's shirt collar looks ready for take off.
I don't think there is such a thing as a Bad Kinks recording. There are just some I like more than others.
Fucking love Dave's background vocals

The Kinks brought a special quality to their music. They made you think, it wasn’t just a bunch of drivel.

There is very little filler on Something Else, Village Green or Arthur, if any
@@eargasm1072 Exactly!
@@eargasm1072 There's no filler in those. They are perfect as they are, and have their right place next to The Beatles' Rubber soul and Revolver.
