Dude every video and picture of the kinks in the 60s and the 70s all I can think is how frigging hip dave davies was, dude could play and is criminally underrated
They look like they're really enjoying playing their genius Village Green tunes. It's a shame Peter was actually getting ready to leave and the album didn't sell. Seriously underrated during their time..
When Pete left the band, the music papers made it sound as if the band was going to break up anyway. It must have seemed that way, with that album and the singles released around the same time not selling very well. The band that he co-formed, Mapleoak, didn't last long, mostly because he lost interest in them right away.
@@Esotereclectic When they finally did return to the US, they were booked into C list venues - I saw them in the George Marshall High School auditorium in Falls Church VA. They looked pretty loaded to me, and there seemed to be a fair amount of tension on that stage.
On Dec. 21, 1968, they did "Animal Farm" , "Village Green Preservation Society", and "Picture Book" on an ITV color TV program, but the network recorded over the videotapes after the initial broadcast. So these VERY rare clips are all that survives.
I have only recently discovered "the Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society", the album from which these songs are taken...truly a masterpiece
@@FlipDahlenburg Dave is strumming an acoustic and the drummer is clearly hitting the symbols. Ray's intro is clearly moving the string in time, so if they used a tape for the broadcast, which is likely because Ray was unplugged, it would be totally separate from the actual performance. They were clearly playing the tune and there's no reason they wouldn't be singing as well. As a musician it is much harder to mime over a track than simply play it and have the engineers synch the track to the live performance.
Superb! This is from the Julie Felix show from the BBC. I saw this about a year ago at a television society that meets in Stourbridge. Wonderful to see colour Kinks footage from the 60's. Thanks ever so much for posting it.
Yeah but they did their own thing, they were still so unique and nothing was put on with them. Ray was writing about it. Dave was just so ridiculously beautiful too..
I appreciate that they didn't make their music about drugs, or being stoned, etc.. they kept their music true in that respect. That said, there was plenty of psychedelic music I truly love, but the Kinks would have been too different if they didn't keep it the way they did
Truely amazng album, which sadly never got the credit it deserved. I prefer the Beatles myself, but Village Green Preservation Society is the thing i listen to most. It has to be the best 'concept' album ever made. I've been trying to get hold of the original LP but can't get it ANYWHERE and any on eBAY sell for hundreds of pounds each. Clearly it's getting moreand more popular which shows how ahead of it's time it was back in 1968.
@@jamesmack3314 Better than the Stones. And The Who were brilliant in the pre Tommy period. Pictures of Lily, Happy Jack, I can see for miles - all rock classics. But The Kinks were the kings of the sixties.
@@michaeligoe3935 well I will respectfully disagree with you on the stones because I think their catalog of songs from the mid to late 60s was stellar and as good as the kinks are they didn’t have the quantity of memorable songs of course they had quite a few .. and for me The Who pre Tommy has some great stuff but I am a fan of the period 69 to 73 much more than the happy jack I can see for miles days
@@jamesmack3314 To be fair, we're comparing at a very high level. Gimme Shelter and Won't Get Fooled Again are stunning rock tracks. It was all good, mate.
I watched The show as a 17-year-old in 1969. It was called "Colour me Pop" on BBC2. The music wasn't live but some of the singing was. I still have an open reel tape recording of the whole show
Sounds like they are singing live along with the record. The riff at 4:58 to 5:06 is simple scale, but it is worked in nicely as an integral part of this song. I love the KinKs, the Village Green album and this song. Glad to see it here on You Tube.
Ray and Dave Davies are Awesome ... Incredible ... Masters of Music! Thanks for posting. Long Live the Village Green Preservation Society and God Save The Kinks.
a true gem. not many tv apearences exist of the Kinks promoting the commercially ill fated village green preservation society lp. It's one of my absolute all time favourites. so this actually has to be 1968 because bass player pete quaife had already left by 1969. please correct me if I'm mistaken..
I saw the Kinks in concert in the early 80's when they were doing 'Bird Dog' by the Everly Bros. You can really see the Everly Bros influence in Picture Book, brothers singing harmony the way only brothers do. They coulda done that more, I think.
Incredible indeed. The VGPS album was released November 1968 and Pete Quaife left March 1969. He's still in the group here so the footage is probably early 1969. I'm going to check Doug Hinman's wonderful book. Thanks for posting this!

@kinksboss1 I haven't managed to get a copy of it on vinyl, but i did find an original 1968 Stereo reel to reel tape of the Village Green Preservation Society so all is good :)
@Melodyfayre Hiya as far as i know this clip is from Jan 1969 Pete left in April of that year. He was involved in the rehearsals for the next album Arthur but left before that LP was released.
Suenan hermoso en vivo no pierden su calidad es una pena que no sean tan reconocidos y que se hable menos de ellos a difrencia de the beatles los kinks son unos grandes y tienen varias joyas y hermosuras de canciones
@worldsno1drwhofan the kinks did not turn hippie or drugs... true... but they recorded the first psychedelic song ever "SEE MY FRIENDS"... Correct me if im wrong...
I found this video months ago and have watched it about 100 times, this and other great Kinks videos, just wandering around RUclips...from what I've read recently VGPS is today the Kinks' best-selling non-compilation album
An exelent clip, which is indeed taken from The Julie Felix Show(BBC).This clip was saved from destruction in the early 1970's by Bob Pratt, who also saved a large multitude of material from work which was being thrown out,was known for being quite the collector.Bob also saved the Kinks "Apeman" performance from a 1970 Top Of The Pops, which is easliy found on youtube. Many thanks again for posting this great footage, might you possibly have any other footage from The Julie Felix Show?Just currious.
The Kinks were one of the only bands not to turn hippie and drugs. Thanks Ray for not following the crowd and doing what music YOU wanted to do and not doing music just because the Beatles were.
At least some of this is dubbed--12 string acoustic on "Pic Book," harmonica while Ray sings on "Steam." Still, nice to see them, one of my faves. They did write, play and sing the songs, tho not here, completely.
Thank you so much for this - wonderful to see such rare footage. I've checked the Doug's masterpiece and it appears to be from the BBC1 series "Once More With Felix" which was broadcast on January 7 1969. Amazing!
wow this is a brilliant find. apparently they never performed VGPS songs live, and was in the sixties in colour too! It's weird seeing Ray in colour with beatle hair - i'm used to the rocker hair in the 70s lol.
Amazing clip! Whenever I listen to Steam Powered Trains, I imagine it playing as Dennis Skinner and Tony Benn sit atop of Tower Bridge drinking tea as the world blows up in a nuclear disaster.... Perfect soundtrack to the whole apocalyptic future thing.
dave davies had fuckin style

Ray Davies is the best storyteller rock n roll has ever known
Peter Townshend told good stories as well. Some of the best Beatle songs were good stories also.
God Save The Kinks! ... When America failed to welcome them, Ray goes off and writes the bloody greatest album in the World... So thank you America!

They were in a period of amazing talent so one slip up and it would not sell because something else would sell instead.
It made me sad how dissapointed Pete looked for some reason
The Kinks, The Stooges, and Bolan basically pioneered every punk/glam/rock band that followed.

Just so ahead of their time.
Dave is a great guitarist... tasteful leads which never get lost into "note babble".
Love the Kinks forever. On this track I notice how insanely handsome Dave is.
I agree - Ray and Dave Davies just have legendary hair!
My brothers favorite album, it was a flop for many reasons and soon after that my brother left due to the constant in-fighting
He's a hero to have stuck with them for so long! Great artists, awful people.... RIP Pete!
Dave and Ray getting along. Great days indeed. Best live Picture Book I've ever seen
It's Memorex. No guitar cables. They're singing 'live' to their own voices, too.

Both Ray and Dave look freakin gorgeous!
This song is just amazing watching for the first time high as hell
This must be one of Peter Quaife's final moments with the band. Most 1969 footage has John Dalton on bass.
