      I like wool or cashmere blend with 5 to 40% synthetic fiber to keep the fabric last longer. Some material only has 5 to 20% wool or alpaca. It won’t keep you warm. Synthetic fabric is heavier and stiffer, inexpensive and looks it.
      A wool or cashmere coat needs brushing to rid off dust and loosen dirt. Invest in a good suit or coat brush made with the right bristles to not damage the fabric. I may dry clean my coats before putting them away after season ends but not always. Definitely brush and check for food/drink stain. Light color coat I’d wear a scarf or muffler between neck and collar to keep discoloration and yellowing to minimum.

    I have a great tip for feeling warmer in a wool coat: wear a a very thin down under coat that keeps out the wind and makes you feel warmer. Uniqlo has great such thin undercoat. It even has buttons to fold down the collar so that the jacket follows the line of your wool coat. Also works wonders underneath leather jackets which often are too cold until suddenly they get too hot. Basically gets you to wear those garments more frequently.

    Great styling tips, and as someone who lives in Ottawa Canada, winter coats are a must and it’s fun to find some that you enjoy wearing and make you feel good! I always have one colourful wool 3/4 length coat that’s perfect for everyday running around. This year I found a gorgeous magenta coloured coat, that looks wonderful over denim or black, which I wear a lot in winter. I get so many compliments when I wear it, and as soon as I put it on, it makes me smile! Go for colour, be bold and be happy! It’s cold outside but we can still look good!

    Yes please more about coats! It’s especially helpful in this video to see how hem lines, silhouette and texture affect layering. I especially love the feel and function of coats and jackets - I have many that I’m learning how to style. Wow o wow that blue coat is luscious- the lining is so flirty, so beautiful on you! Just yesterday I visited a small town thrift shop that’s been on my bucket list; ❤I unexpectedly scored a gorgeous mid-thigh length burgundy(!) tailored coat with removable faux fur collar by Vince Camuto- it’s the perfect pop of color and trend for my wardrobe, goes with everything I own; I basically danced out of the store 💃🏻 celebrating slow fashion. Yes - it's so interesting, I usually remove the basting stitch but the little tag I kept on as I know the designer hand makes each coat and takes great pride in her work .. so i left that piece on. That's a great question to address :)

    • @lynnebarren2410
      @lynnebarren2410 Год назад

      Tags that advertise/ advise Material and Make, etc. should be removed plus basting which is meant to be temporary. However be careful when removing tags not to damage garment as temporary stitching on pockets etc nowadays is machine done often. Tailor/handmade use to be handsewn as easier to remove. I have known people damage their clothing accidentally when removing tags so use a quick unpick not scissors and take care.
      Leavings tags and basting looks like the wearer is unfamiliar with wearing suits/coats/tailored clothing!

    @sparklie962 Год назад +5

    I'd definitely be interested in a video on how to assess coat quality. My sense of the coat offerings this year and last is that it's nearly impossible to find a quality coat really anywhere, that isn't going to cost me more than I paid for my fridge. I had my old coat relined in the fall to extend its life but there's no escaping that the cuffs and collar are balding. Perhaps I can get a velvet trim added over top or something. Meanwhile, other than at the local consignment store, I haven't found a single (affordable) coat that I'd be willing to wear, much less pay for. All too often they are turning up in low-quality synthetics that are neither warm, nor water resistant - and a surprising number are not lined. These just aren't practical for my climate.

    • @sparklie962
      @sparklie962 Год назад +3

      @@dianecyment1715 Well, I guess it depends on the tailor and also by your definition of "costly." I paid about $140 which is a fraction of what the coat cost me in today's dollars (it's 15 yo) and still a fraction of what a 100% wool, fully lined coat retails at these days - at least in Canada. So for me it was a worthwhile investment. Plus, my coat is knee-length and needed 3 pockets relined, so no doubt took more fabric than a pea coat might. Good luck and definitely shop around for tailors! I'd had another quote for $185...

You briefly mentioned dit here but that was just to keep it all neutral and all the same… This was one of the best winter outfit videos I’ve ever seen because it was realistic and practical for actual winter weather. Yes please on what to look for in a coat. I have a hole in my wardrobe for a black wool coat and haven’t been able to find a good one this late in the season. Would love any recommendations.

    I would love to see a video on outfits that fight the winter blahs. It’s so cold and windy here in southern Alberta. It’s tempting to just buy spring clothes but we know this doesn’t actually help!

    Nice advice! I'd love to see you style that silk cognac midi skirt! I have one that is so similar that I plan to take for my month in Paris this spring. Tucking any top in it sort of shows the lumps and bumps of the top beneath the silk, and my skirt is properly sized, not tight! Oh my! I was wondering if a half slip would help with the tucking aspect, by tucking the top under the half slip. I love the style of the skirt and adore the color, but it's a challenge!

    I live in California. We have been in a drought for years. We recently had the atmospheric rivers. I really did not have good footwear. A video on what to look for in stylish shoes/boots for rain would be welcome.

    Hi there, Alyssa, so good to see you ❤
    Please do another nice long video on wool coats and puffer coats.
    The hemline is an issue for me when I wear flowy evening dressy silk/fine wool long dusters with skinny bottoms. Perhaps the coat should be mostly monochromatic coordinating with the duster??
    Don’t want to wear my Canada Goose long coat.

    Good morning🌞 Thank you for another great video. Say, I was wondering what kind of boots you’re wearing? The chunky, tan, lace-ups. The only ones I’ve been able to find are more like rain boots. Also, love that blue over coat on you!

    Hi Alyssa, as an Aussie who plans to visit Canada next winter do you have any tips for someone who only wants to bring ONE coat (or maybe an under-jacket with waterproof trench) that needs to serve for city wear AND hiking through snow?
